- So what is The Graph Protocol all about? Why do some people call it the Google of Blockchains? And what is the use case for the GRT token? You’ll find answers to these questions in this video.
The Graph is an indexing protocol for querying blockchain data that enables the creation of fully decentralized applications.
The project was started in late 2017 by a trio of software engineers who were frustrated by the lack of tooling in the Ethereum ecosystem which made building decentralized applications hard. After a few years of work and a lot of iterations, The Graph went live in Dec 2020.
The Graph, as one of the infrastructure protocols, can be quite tricky to grasp, so before we jump into the details, let’s try to understand what indexing - the main concept behind The Graph - actually is.

I remember making a Steem analytics app in 2017 and had to go through so much redundant indexing.
This caused me to add an asynchronous loading button to acquire more data so the end user doesn’t have to wait for everything to load.
The crypto world isn’t aware on how important this is and how impactful it will be!
I watched this video and still have no idea how The Graph works lol. Thank god there are much smarter people out there creating these products for us to use.

Hello from the future, I'm curious how well you guys did. It's 2024 and Graph gives grt for leaving about them on Coin Base, it seems like it's a super useful project but I'm not seeing the hype now like the hype from 2021. What's everyone's thoughts on Graph today?

One thing I don’t understand is why do these protocols all have to have their own tokens? Can’t they settle in the blockchain’s native currencies? I understand the economic incentives - the creators of GRT will be dead rich if the price of their tokens surge - but IMO creating so many different types of tokens is bad for DX and UX and web 3 adoption in general, like imagine needing to keep tab of the balances of so many types of tokens just to get things done.

The only thing I don't like about GRT is that a massive dump of coins is scheduled to hit the market around Mid June 2021, which could hurt price. I'm debating whether to buy now or wait until later this year.

Can you maybe explain the new dominance hedges and synthetic index fund recently released and some of the older ones? For example xBTC with rebase function. Isn't this extra volatile compared to the already volatile btc?

the graph token price jumped from 0.5$ to 2.88$ today and stable at 2.65$. congrats who bought it earlier.

We have been given a rare opportunity. I see the opportunity to buy GRT now as being able to buy Google stock back in 2002. Buy and just keep buying at any price this will only get bigger and bigger.
The Graph was also listed on Coinbase IMMEDIATELY as it went out to the retail buyers, that along is a tell tell sign. Great video, thank you.
It costs 100k GRT staked to become an indexer; around $150000. the coinbase listing was premature; pushed the price up and created a massive barrier to entry. terrible for crypto as a whole and sad to see happen
I believe the grt devs can provide 'grants' in the form of GRT with the intention of other developers becoming indexers.

Sounds like a much more plausible solution in the context of decentralized applications than modelling blockchains in external data structures that can be queried with standard approaches. This would also seem like being a more scalable solution. As for the video, I would have enjoyed to hear more about the use cases. For example, to which particular use cases do Uniswap or Synthetix use it.
