Imagine getting paid with a gold coin, only to have it turn back into mercury and you get cancer.
rgbii lol
Classic
Underrated comment lol
This comment is gold.
rgbii you'd have to be super unlucky to get cancer in that case, the amount of radiation prolly wouldn't do much, and well murcury isn't carcinogenic, it has more interesting ways to kill you.
The first thing I think about when I hear "philosopher's stone" is two orphan kids on a quest to get back their bodies.

Harry Potter and JK Rowling suck. Makes sense her name would be JK, considering she's an absolute joke!
Medieval alchemist: "Let us turn lead into gold!"
Modern scientist: "Yeah well, you can of course do that but it's probably much more cost-effective to just mine an asteroid."
Medieval alchemist: "To..... what?!"
Penny Lane
Modern Scientists: To mine an asteroid. It’s better that spending way too much stuff and money, even the gold doesn’t pay off after.
phung tran yea but if you send a single ship to mine multiple asteroids for most of its minerals it could be extremely effective, however the global currency would need to adapt as well because you would need enough money to rebuild the shuttles whilst ensuring that you can get paid top dollar for your minerals which I feel like not enough people have enough money to buy them like that. however it's probably how well farm resources if we survive long enough.
and gold is kinda useless in most cases other than some uses in circuits
mortaché de muerte, not entirely true but also, what's your point exactly? :)
Penny Lane my point is that mining more gold will do little, we need actual resources like fuel and useful minerals
When I hear "Philosopher's Stone" I think of thousands of souls compacted into a red liquid that can be used for alchemical actions
Many others do too, specifically two boys, a chimera, a scarred man, a silent priestess, and all of a desert town that no longer exists..

As a 70-year-old student of nuclear science, i take my hat off to the narrator. Michael, you have explained such a maddeningly complex subject with rare lucidity, in a crisp manner and in such a short time that it rivets the attention of the lay person. Keep up the good work.
It’s good to know this info, and hopefully on the entirety of the channel, is accurate and makes sense to people in the field
I may be too late to talk to you but before this if you had to explain everything how long would it be

It’s incredible that alchemy has finally achieved its goal. Alchemy is what gave us chemistry and therefore the processes to get to this point.
Sadly still in a practically useless capacity outside of research purposes, but nonetheless, the point stands.

So, we used the ultimate human method: hit it REALLY hard.
That sounds like something Goku would say.
Even though "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was released a few years before the FMA manga was, I relate the Philosopher's Stone to FMA. This may have happened because the USA's release was re-branded as "The Sorcerer's Stone", but frankly, it doesn't really matter which was first. It only matters which one you first associated with the word
Well... Alchemy was a lot more complex than just turning lead into gold. It's metaphysical and the alchemist is searching for a way to turn his body into pure spirit.
But are these philosopher stones made of people?
Listen to me Hatcher, you have to tell them! PHILOSOPHER STONES ARE PEOPLE!!
we gotta stop them... somehow!
ㅤBipo10 yeah they're made of compressed philosophers, hence the namr
Yes, need for raw materials is the only reason why nowadays universities still keep philosophy departments.
No, they just were peed out from their kidneys.

Going by the comments, it seems most relate the philosopher's stone to FMA and not Harry Pothead
AsciiGDL I was gonna say something similar! It's what I think of first at least💜 yay full metal!
I related it to Flash Season 3 lol xD
I'm with you on this one. And I don't even watch anime often. But the stone kinda plays a "small" role in the series compared to Harry Potter...
I had a feeling more people, myself included, would have thought of the Elric brothers looking to restore their bodies first.
AsciiGDL
Because everyone here has already realized that FMA is more amazing.
Practicality be damned, we can still say "yes, we've turned one metal into another" which is still pretty damn impressive!
lol There is nothing impressive about doing by hand what the universe already does by itself, given enough (as in “panic-inducingly gargantuan amounts of”) time. Trying to do it faster than the universe already does implies practicality, which you’ve damned.
I think it's kind of neat that the easiest element to turn into gold(-ish) turned out to be mercury, seeing as mercury is the _other_ element alchemists tended to obsess over.
i like the idea that if you do turn it to gold it’s radioactive. gives me a curse to those with greed “the alchemists cursed gold”
Ok the comment section is full metal alchemist lol
thats what i like to see

well its a ring only, i think its just not enough mercury to even hurt someone, i might leave some sort of burn on her finger tho, so yeah she would be angry
Yeah, I think she might go mad over it.

But that gives me a good idea to break is with my gf
Michael, you need to sacarifice people to obtain a philosopher's stone. In the millions preferably for the best results. That is the equivalent exchange needed
*"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one and only truth."*

Rewatching this several years later, still can't believe that transmutation is actually a thing
Well, technically all elements are born out of Hydrogen and Helium.
Alchemists only thought of turning lead into gold less than 1000 years ago, when the books of Jabir ibn Hayyan were translated and diffused in Europe. He had devised an alternative theory to replace the Four Elements of the Greek. His theory claimed that all metals were made of the same two "principles", but different metals combined them in different ways. It was that theory that made turning lead into gold seem a plausible thing worth trying.
*[Insert FMA reference here]*

To activate the machine do you have to clap your hands?
theokchannel if you haven't seen the truth, then you gotta draw a transmutation circle around it.

If you want to get some gold clap your hands dan dan.
Ok sorry.
:D
Actually they cant clap there hands they havent seen the gate of truth. I guess the old fasion transmutation circle should suffice
to stabilize the radioactive gold isotopes, I´d use the eightfold sigill of stasis. It´s said to work even better than a good whack with a sturdy club.

I love your videos. The thorough explanations on each topic are easy to understand, the way information is presented makes it retainable, and all of your hosts are fun to learn from. Thank you for providing us with quality, entertaining, and informative content!
The idea of a philosopher's stone stems from a 2,000 year old discovery that if you mix a stone called sphalerite with copper ore, when smelted you end up with brass and, of course, brass resembles gold. A theory became prevalent that if you discovered the right sort of stone you could use it to turn base metals into gold, just as sphalerite turned copper into brass. Sphalerite, by the way, is an ore of zinc.
thx!❤
Harry Potter? No.
Full Metal Alchemist? Yes!
Check out The Film theorists' episode on the value of a human soul.

I'm sure the alchemists of olde would have a field day learning that machines could turn quicksilver into cursed gold that will eventually revert to mercury once the spell has worn off!
My first though is of Edward and his little..big brother...

i think of full metal alchemist when you said philosiphers stone.
I instantly thought of Steins;Gate when he said CERN. Anyone else. or was it just me?
Christopher Rodriguez Yeah, me too. SERN is too busy trying to create a time machine and achieve world domination to worry about creating gold.
F-ing CERN!!!!!
People crying about CERN but not the Committee of 300? Dont know what that is? Go read the visual novels.
the philosophers stone, was actually turning gold into monotonic gold, the elixir of the gods. The spiritual counterpart was turning the profane spirit into am enlightened spirit forged by a life lived via spiritual principles in action.
Alchemy: the science of understanding, deconstructing, and reconstructing matter. However, it is not an all-powerful art. It is impossible to create something out of nothing. If one wishes to obtain something, something of equal value must be given. This is the law of equivalent exchange; the basis of all alchemy. In accordance to this law, there is a taboo among alchemists. Human transmutation is strictly forbidden. For what could equal the value of a human soul?

Hears: "When you hear philosopher stone, the first thing that comes to mind might be..." Me: "Full Metal Alche...Harry Potter yup Harry Potter"
You're wrong When I hear Philosopher Stone = FULL METAL ALCHEMIST
I was learning about this in class a while back and couldn't help but think about how it relates to alchemy. So interesting
It's so absurd, I really wish "making gold" had made it onto yesterday's quiz show as a true option of the "historical uses of pee"
This is why I love SciShow. Michael Aranda, always going deep!
Always great to see about the philosopher's stone. It's sad that as more and more things get subsumed into pop culture, people end up thinking that a given movie/game etc. is the origin of something fascinating in history is from a movie, game, etc. I often wonder where people now think all the gods come from, etc.
The great irony here is that if it where possible then it would make gold near worthless.
if that really happens the world will relies on guy who set the values of numbers that printed on funny looking paper
Not really. Gold still has some awsome healing properties just like silver.
Well, Fullmetal Alchemist comes to mind when talking about philosopher's stone.
Jeralyn Cabaluna what sone shitty cartoon?

It seems to me that the practical purpose of turning lead into gold (or anything else into gold) is just to say "who cares what value it has commercially, humanity's wanted to do this for centuries and we pulled it off. Pretty cool, huh?"
Sometimes science is just fun.
Michael has such a lovely voice... All the hosts on sci show have their unique charm, such a great channel.

"When you think of philosopher stones you probably think of Harry Potter"
Um...no...I thought of FMA...
In my mind the philosopher's stone from equivalent exchange, renamed projecte, a minecraft mod, comes to mind. It allows the transformation of resources into equivalent valued substances
Ancient Alchemists: You can turn lead into gold
19th century scientists: Wow that's ridiculous and embarrassing that we ever thought that was possible.
21st century scientists: You can turn lead into gold.
Wrong! We only think of FMA
When I think of Philosopher Stone I think about Full Metal Alchemist
5:17 "turning us immortal" a full metal alchemist reference!!
harry potter too..
3:40
Sounds more like fairy gold than regular gold. Fairies change sticks and rocks into gold, use it as payment, and when you get up in the morning, your gold has turned back into sticks
Harry Potter doesn't come to mind, FMA does.
Another fun fact is that only 1 isotope of gold is "stable" (though some believe it emits alpha radiation) , while the second longest lasting has a half-life of only 186 days! With the third being just 6 days!
When i think of philosphers stone, i think of terraria
Turning lead into gold is a metaphor! Im sure some alchemists actually tried it, but basically its the same thing what buddha said about enlightenment..
FULL METAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD
i think of full metal alchemists when i hear it.
I purposely sat through a 2.5 minute add to watch this... It's was worth it 🙂. Great video thank you.
Imagine walking along with your gold isotope watch and suddenly it just turns into mercury and melts
Turn mercury into heavy gold. Pawn it. Laugh as it turns back to mercury and irradiates the pawnshop.
Can’t make yourself immortal? Well when transhumanism takes hold, that may change (sort of).
The Great Papyrus you have no idea what you’re talking about dude.
It is sad that in 2017, some (most ?) people don't even know what transhumanism means. I think it is a marketing problem, transhumanism doesn't sound good/sounds too complicated. A better approach should be to call it: "never be sick again" or "the end of diseases and illnesses" (i know it isn't the true meaning of transhumanism, but i think this is the better approach no matter what).
John Rogers yeah, it’s like the word liberal. Every single thing has been said about it.
Years back I bought a disc called "Bookshop Classics" and in the ancient section there was one book entitled "The Book Of Secrets " by Asclephus.
This book told how to make the Philosopher's Stone but not how to use it.
No. I was never tempted to make it because it called for both mercury and two powerful acids.
Plus a thumbs up from god himself.
If this comment section is the first you've heard of Full Metal Alchemist then you need to drop everything and watch it now. Trust me you won't be disappointed, just try to emotionally prepare yourself for anything. It's a rollercoaster.
Literally didn't think about harry potter at all. My mind went straight to FMA.
We all thought of FMA baby girl
I didn’t know that. Learned something new today. Thanks. 🙏
I think everyone here knew that the ingredient of the philosopher stone is of course,
The soul of human being.
First thing I thought of was my trinket made during leveling Alchemy in WoW
HanSeoulOh I see you are a man of culture as well.
Forget Harry Potter it's alll about Full Metal Alchemist💕
carlee Malmberg true
These muggles make no sense....
I do wonder if the alchemists claims were because they had a few times obtained radioactive materials without the requisite knowledge. They were on the right track with lead and mercurial experiements.
I have to wonder if they accidentally stumbled on this process but were unable to repeat it because of they hadn't discovered radiation.
When I first heard philosopher stone the idea came into my mind is "Fullmetal Alchemist" and the innocent isphalen who sacrificed to make them.
No I think of the Elric Brothers trying to bring back their mom Equivalent Exchange
Small brain: Harry Potter
Big brain: Fullmetal Alchemist
Glowing transcendant brain: The Adventure Zone
I notice this video didn't mention another common alchemical goal: finding the universal solvent.
Which turned out to be...water. And no one wanted to admit it for the longest time.
ok im gonna go back to the middle ages with this technology and show the alchemists futility of their craft only to tell them that the real philosopher's stone was the friends we made along the way.
We just want our bodies back
Any time I hear about humans making gold I think of that old twilight zone episode where the guys steal a bunch of gold and put themselves in hermetically sealed life support chambers, to let the value increase over thousands of years, only to wake up and find out gold is worthless because humans can mass produce it.
All they needed was a large transmutation circle that accelerates particles near to the speed of light.
My question is why he said Harry Potter when everyone thought FMA. Not an Anime fan?
:GASP:
Wtf I thought the philosophers stone was used to bring some alchemists' mom back!
