Nice to see Neu and Split Enz pass the revue. Mental Notes (1975) was indeed their first album but it was never released outside Australia/New Zeeland. The Follow up album containted a bunch of new tracks and a bunch of redo's from their debut. Second Thoughts (1976) was produced by Phil Manzanera as their first worldwide release. Phil Judd and Tim Finn were two crazy captains on the same ship. When Judd left Tims younger brother Neil joined the band. Dizrythmia (1977) was their last album with a prog feel but punk pop influences were already sneaking in. Those first three albums show a different band than the more new wave and Beatlesque pop group they became in the early eighties. Worth checking out.
Galactic Cowboys - self-titled debut. I was blown away and had to buy the CD after seeing the video for the jaw-dropping We're Not Amused on MTV (must have been Headbanger's Ball). Other key tracks are Why Can't You Believe in Me (with its persistent vocal harmonies), *SEA OF TRANQUILITY*, the heavy Kill Floor and the emotional epic closer Speak To Me. Surprised this album/band isn't talked about more on the channel.
Hi Rand. I messaged you a couple of weeks ago about the Hands album. The second one I have a CDR of is actually called Palm Mystery, so I haven't heard the one you mentioned. Just done CDR,s of the two Sloche albums which I like a lot. Cheers.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Emerson, Lake and Palmer Journey - Journey and of course: King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
1 minute in, and i'm having to take the Jobson drink! And not to be a contrarian, but that Alan Parson's tales from Mystery and imagination deserved a shout-out! All-time best is KC though... Hug to the compadres!
Epic show guys in fitting prog kinda fashion. Really love and appreciate the variety on this. Anthony's picks are more mellow and a bit jazzy with some Canterbury scene thrown int he mix. Pete's picks are a mix of classics and some lesser known prog rock. George's picks are largely metalled out and fusion whereas Chuck's picks also gives a nod to some krautrock classics. Great stuff thoroughly enjoyed it. My picks in no particular order 1. Cynic-focus 2. King crimson-in the court of the crimson king 3. The mahavishnu orchestra-inner mounting flame 4. Al di meola-land of the midnight sun 5. E.l.p-e.l.p 6. T2-it'll all work out in boomland 7. Camel-camel 8. Opeth-orchid 9. Animals as leaders-animals as leaders 10. Leprous-tall poppy syndrome
Prog Power 2 was indeed the greatest lineup with Spiral Architect, lol they were also completely hammered after they played and even more entertaining by the end of the night.
I would credit Fish with having an awesome solo debut...Vigil in a wilderness of mirrors. Fantastic, gives him a double honor of twin debut classics when paired with Marillions debut.
1- Magma : Kobaia 2- King Crimson : In the Court of the Crimson King 3- Happy the Man : Happy the Man 4- Univers Zero : 1313 5- The Flower Kings : Back in the world of adventures 6- David Sancious : Forest of Feelings 7- Present : Triskaidekaphobie 8- Kansas : Kansas 9- Animals As Leaders : Animals As Leaders 10- Mike Oldfield : Tubular Bells
Thanks for including IQ, Pete! If I remember correctly though, IQ's debut was "Seven stories into eight", which they released themselves, on tape only. Some one and a half decade later, IQ re-recorded it as " Seven stories into 98", and it really showcased what a great music material it was! If it had been recorded with that quality and that level of musicianship initially, in 82, it would've been a killer debut. "Tales..." was the first from them released by a label.
I bought Marillion's first album when it first came out by mistake ( I thought they did a song I really liked but was in fact by another band!). All these decades later and I still love its atmosphere.
Great show guys! Going to spend some time checking out these bands. I have only known a handful of radio songs by Jethro Tull and never heard Gentle Giant until this year and thank you for letting me know. I guess that I have been waiting a long time to hear this great music.
@@chuckazeee It is good to still hear people talking about Spiral Architect 20 years later. I agree that a second album should have happened. Hopefully, Terra Odium's debut album will help fill the void.
Neu -- great choice! (It's actually pronounced "Noy" in German). Also glad to see some love for IQ-Tales, and the first Kansas album, which blew me away when it was released; nothing else sounded like it. One that didn't get mentioned is PFM-Storia di un minuto. And finally, Phish-Junta: Prog fans need to check this out; there's some amazing instrumental prog embedded amidst the goofy lyrics.
@@erikberg5363 Hey Erik, yes that first PFM album still sounds fresh to me; their music ages well. For Phish's Junta, check out Divided Sky, You Enjoy Myself, and Fluffhead's Travels. But Phish is a better band live than in the studio, because they are excellent group improvisers, -- they never play a song the same way twice. Try A Live One. Happy phishing!
Man.... I love this show. Had my top 10 loaded. Listened to 40 picks + tons of HM's, and still had a handful left on my list LOL. SUCH a great topic, and such a great conversation about a wide variety of music - including a few I have to check out. Here's my top 10, FWIW: 1 - King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King 2 - Bo Hansson - Music Inspired By Lord Of The Rings 3 - The Alan Parsons Project - Tales Of Mystery & Imagination 4 - Astra - The Weirding 5 - Egg - s/t 6 - Rick Wakeman - The Six Wives Of Henry VIII 7 - ELP - s/t 8 - UK - s/t 9 - Starcastle - s/t 10 - Hatfield & The North - s/t
Great Job y'all... here's 5 more : 1. Faust "Faust" 2. Focus "Moving Waves" 3. Maxophone "Maxophone" 4. Spin "Spin" 5. Bo Hanssen "Music inspired by Lord of the Rings". 🎼🎵🎶
Bought “Days of Future Past” in 1968 in Vietnam at a military BASE PX. Has “ Nights in White Satin” and “Tuesday Afternoon.” Two of their biggest hits ever.
DoFP was technically their 2nd album. Their debut was The Magnificent Moodies which featured the blues-rock Denny Laine-led version of the band before Hayward and Lodge joined.
Love that Split Enz Mental Notes got a mention. That album had two bona fide geniuses, in Phil Judd and Tim Finn involved and is creepy, gothic, and strangely beautiful as hell. Nothing like the pretty disposable pop that followed.
This is a hard choice....Most of the iconic Prog bands from the 70's didn't hit their stride until the second, third or even third album...back when labels would give you a few times at bat to get your stuff together before they cut you off .
True, as no one ever ranks the debuts from Yes and Genesis as their finest. The debut of Yes clearly shows the band dipping their toes in the water but not having their sound fully developed. From Genesis to Revelation was a pop album (that already sounded dated for 1969) that bore little resemblance to the prog rock they would quickly explore after this album. Other than King Crimson and perhaps ELP, the major acts didn't really take off until three or so albums. The more obscure bands tend to get it right away but many of them did release their debuts a little later on, where they could observe how many of the major bands evolved.

"Mental notes" by Split Enz is a true bridge between Prog and New Wave...it's literally like if when Peter Gabriel quit Genesis, instead of getting Phil to replace him they hired on Ron and Russell Mael from Sparks instead.

I love that Andromeda debut, still listen to that a lot.
Another great episode, and excellent lists!:)..a few more worth mentioning:
TAPP>Tales of Mystery & Imagination '76
PLP >Gothic Impressions '94
Journey>"75
Step Ahead>'82 (one & done)
Procol Harum>'67
Pavlov' s Dog>Pampered Menial'75
Ambrosia>'75
FM>Black Noise'78
Riverside>Out of Myself'03
Lands End>P.C.H '94
This is why I love SoT - I have created a huge list of bands/albums I have to check out. Thanks!
Tonight’s show was Progtastic!
Hi Rand. I messaged you a couple of weeks ago about the Hands album. The second one I have a CDR of is actually called Palm Mystery, so I haven't heard the one you mentioned. Just done CDR,s of the two Sloche albums which I like a lot. Cheers.
@@robvickers2126 I never heard of Palm Mystery and neither has Discogs. Would love to hear it.
@@shyshift If you email me your address to rvickers1951@gmail.com I will post you a copy.

Crack the Sky’s first album is brilliant!

Absolutely amazing lists by everyone! A few names I hadn't thought about at all and a couple I didn't even know!
Anglagard- Hybris
ELP- ELP
King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King
Area- Arbeit Macht Frei
Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso- Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso
Caligonaut- Magnified As Giants
Wobbler- Hinterland
Mahavishnu Orchestra- The Inner Mounting Flame
All Traps on Earth- A Drop of Light
Riverside- Out of Myself
My top ten were not in order...
Great panel. Each comes in with a different perspective on the genres and its sub-genres.
"Neu" in German means "New" and it reads "Noy"
Exactly... I was going to post that but I had to check if someone had made the correction. The influence on Joy Division is very clear.
Was not considered prog on release, nothing else like it, could clear a room in five minutes.
My 10, in no particular order:
Kansas - Kansas
Ambrosia - Ambrosia
Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery and Imagination
Crack the Sky - Crack the Sky (I used to play these guys all the time as a college radio DJ in the early '80s; a sadly forgotten band)
Marillion - Script for a Jester's Tear
Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte
Spock's Beard - The Light (an album and band I discovered thanks to Sea of Tranquility!)
Emerson, Lake and Palmer - Emerson, Lake and Palmer
Journey - Journey
and of course: King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
I can’t put in words how much I love this show!!!! Pete, Chuck George, Anthony - all great guys and great album picks! Love it!!! :D
1 minute in, and i'm having to take the Jobson drink! And not to be a contrarian, but that Alan Parson's tales from Mystery and imagination deserved a shout-out! All-time best is KC though... Hug to the compadres!
Great picks! My favourite is KC as well. The Fall of the House of Usher is my favourite part of Tales even though it’s more classical than rock
@@erikberg5363 Epic symphonic.
One of the best "one and done" prog bands/album , Sound Of Contact - Dimensionaut
My picks in no particular order
1. Cynic-focus
2. King crimson-in the court of the crimson king
3. The mahavishnu orchestra-inner mounting flame
4. Al di meola-land of the midnight sun
5. E.l.p-e.l.p
6. T2-it'll all work out in boomland
7. Camel-camel
8. Opeth-orchid
9. Animals as leaders-animals as leaders
10. Leprous-tall poppy syndrome
I would add
1- Al Di Meola- Land of the Midnight Sun
2- Captain Beyond- S/T Debut
3- Sensational AlexHarvey Band- Framed
...and this was the list in which Pavlov's Dog "Pampered Menial" had to be included! :) Still, great picks from everyone, thank you!
Yep, great choice!
Hey Chuck!!! Great picks- Crack the Sky are still fantastic and play here in Baltimore still! And Split Enz!!! You are the man my friend!
Thanks, I saw CTS here in New York City in 2019.
1- Magma : Kobaia
2- King Crimson : In the Court of the Crimson King
3- Happy the Man : Happy the Man
4- Univers Zero : 1313
5- The Flower Kings : Back in the world of adventures

8- Kansas : Kansas
9- Animals As Leaders : Animals As Leaders
10- Mike Oldfield : Tubular Bells
Knocking it out of the park Guys! Inside, inside baseball! Your shows are" joining the dots" to expand my knowledge of music.
fantastic segment here, sleeping on a lot of albums i simply passed over and introduced to some i've never heard of before. thanks!
It was a demo, not an official release initially.
I bought Marillion's first album when it first came out by mistake ( I thought they did a song I really liked but was in fact by another band!). All these decades later and I still love its atmosphere.
"Galactic Zoo Dossier" (1971) Arthur Brown/Kingdom Come. Never gets old
Yep I always thought it was a pretty amazing album and a band that are incredibly overlooked.
Caravan's first is their best in my opinion, so should definitely be featured. Also Second Hand's "Reality", and Hawkwinds debut.
Great picks!
Great show guys! Going to spend some time checking out these bands. I have only known a handful of radio songs by Jethro Tull and never heard Gentle Giant until this year and thank you for letting me know. I guess that I have been waiting a long time to hear this great music.
That first Split Enz album is indeed a prog masterpiece - if not super original.
George for the win mentioning Spiral Architect. They were great at ProgPower.
Pete and I agree 100% 👍
That first PFM album is great, might even be my favourite from them. I need to investigate Phish some day soon
oops, I hit send too early; Pete listed PFM in honorable mentions.
@@docbobster They sound right up my alley. Thanks for the recommendations!
Fun show! Good picks from everyone. I'll be checking out a number of albums I don't know, which I always look forward to and enjoy!
Man.... I love this show. Had my top 10 loaded. Listened to 40 picks + tons of HM's, and still had a handful left on my list LOL. SUCH a great topic, and such a great conversation about a wide variety of music - including a few I have to check out.
Here's my top 10, FWIW:
1 - King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
2 - Bo Hansson - Music Inspired By Lord Of The Rings
3 - The Alan Parsons Project - Tales Of Mystery & Imagination
4 - Astra - The Weirding
5 - Egg - s/t
6 - Rick Wakeman - The Six Wives Of Henry VIII
7 - ELP - s/t
8 - UK - s/t
9 - Starcastle - s/t
10 - Hatfield & The North - s/t
Great Job y'all... here's 5 more : 1. Faust "Faust" 2. Focus "Moving Waves" 3. Maxophone "Maxophone" 4. Spin "Spin" 5. Bo Hanssen "Music inspired by Lord of the Rings". 🎼🎵🎶
Oh I almost forgot _ Klaatu "Klaatu" 👽
Bo Hansen rarely gets a mention but it's so atmospheric.
Bought “Days of Future Past” in 1968 in Vietnam at a military BASE PX. Has “ Nights in White Satin” and “Tuesday Afternoon.” Two of their biggest hits ever.
It’s actually their second album, but a fantastic one anyway!
Right, I forgot. First Prog Album.
@@PieGuyBill I’ve never heard the debut personally. Have you?
@@erikberg5363 Are you a Denny Laine fan?
Great show!
My list:
10 - Gong / Magick Brother
9 - Pink Floyd / Piper
8 - Cathedral / Cathedral

@@robvickers2126 thanks. What do you think of the second album Strangelet(2008)?
@@shyshift Not as good as the first but very listenable. I always go back to the first one as a complete album but dip in and out of the second.
@@robvickers2126 It’s very rare too except for RUclips.
@@shyshift Downloaded it from RUclips until I can find an original at a reasonable price. There's quite a few becoming rare now and quite expensive on eBay, discogs and Amazon.
No love for Echolyn? Their debut CD is amazing!
NOY, not New or No - and btw probably the most intelligent and informed pick of the night. Chuck is the man.
Wow Pete the T-shirt you´re using looks amazing!!
Great episode guys! Love it!
Sidenote: The word NEU means NEW in English and is pronounced NOY!

"Mental notes" by Split Enz is a true bridge between Prog and New Wave...it's literally like if when Peter Gabriel quit Genesis, instead of getting Phil to replace him they hired on Ron and Russell Mael from Sparks instead.
1. King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King

I may be wrong, but I think the name of the first band Chuck mentioned, Neu! is pronounced "Noy"
Saga - Saga (does this count? whatever it counts)
Spock's Beard - The Light (the only album of theirs I like)
Pallas - The Sentinel (the best thing they ever did)
Black Widow - Sacrifice (again, only good album really)
Flash - Flash (their best one)
IQ - Tales From The Lush Attic (very different from their later stuff, but still really good)
Kansas - Kansas (on par with their best stuff)
Magnum - Kingdom Of Madness (the debut counts as prog right? my favorite album)
Slauter Xtroyes - Winter Kill (maybe the only prog-metal album I like)
Novela - Miwakugeki (cool out-there japanese prog)
Magnum great choice.
