- First day on track in 39 years! Last event was the US GP at Watkins Glen in 1975. After being in the Donington Grand Prix museum since then, the car has been restored. This is a roll out test day and NOT FULL SPEED. UPDATE Latest vid is out from the Goodwood Members Meeting ... • F1 1975 Shadow-Matra D...
I would give almost anything to drive a 70's F1 car. That Shadow looks and sounds beautiful!
Whilst I think he was driving the DN8 with a Cosworth engine up to the day of his death, I would like to think upon hearing the Matra cranked up, the spirit of Tom Price is smiling !
At least spell his name correctly. Pryce.
1975. Argentina. I was 11.... I went to see J P Jarier, qualify for pole with the Shadow ( with a Cosworth enigne). Number 17 !! The livery, I fell in love with it, right away..... Race day, sunday. I got up at 4 30 in the morning, anticipating the big crowd. My mom made me some sandwiches, for me and my best friend.
So much excitement. So ready to see the Shadow win, and then the announcement, that it was not going to make the grid......
I cried so much..... It's only been 41 years
+quilmesdave jeje Hope this rekindled a few memories and yes they are beautiful those Black Shadows!
+Grant Beath I happen to live in Los Angeles, and UOP ( the oil company), happen to have an office in Fullerton ( a city close by) I was passing by their office, a while ago, and out of curiosity I went in, and saw a poster of the Shadow 17..... It was emotional.
Once a Shadow fan always a fan. Nice to hear from you.
My email address is uopshadow74@yahoo.com. Saw them race at Laguna Seca.Another year or two, they could have beaten the 917...love this stuff
quilmesdave jeje :] :]
Some of you have no idea of what you are talking about and what is done with a car that is on track for the first time after assembly. New unadjusted clutch, new diff, new ring and pinion, gear throw not adjusted and engine never having been run in chassis. You just run the car like this to break in parts and find any unknown issues that come with assembly after 7 years work of rebuild and restoration.
Grant, where was this test day?
In this case, don(t make a movie, just do your test day and when this car is ready to race, show us what is a marvelous car whith maybe the most beautiful V12 sound and power...
I am very sad to see what this car can be now... An ambulance, no more !
Luke Albanese 3 months late, but sonoma it seems
Lovely sound (especially at the short moments on wide open :-D ) , thanks for sharing :-)
I second that Grant I know what it's like
Yes, shakedown (installation) is a whole different ball-game to driving a 'fully-sorted' car. Also, if you are new to the circuit AND the car, there is an enormous amount to take in...this is why teams employ development /test drivers before handing over to the regular race drivers. Remember, these cars are very valuable and often unique !
Fanatastic job guys. Some great names associated with Shadow back in the 70s - hope to see it in the UK soon.
Fantastic Car; a real wonderful "one-of", as The Shadow team was considering this engine instead of the Cossie at the time. But the Cossie was the better option. More torque, lighter engine, less fuel required...... so, they did the sums and naturally there was no question. But this V12 sounds heavenly and I always thought it was a wonderful motor.
I think French politics came into play here.
Guy Ligier had strong connections in Paris and was aiming to create an all French F1 team - car, engine, sponsorship and driver so Shadow were denied the engine.
My favorite sound of motor in F1, for 45 years, since i listen "in loco" in Interlagos 1977.

まぁ、79年と80年はマトラの都合(親会社がラリーに注力していた)でコスワースでしたけどね。
Always loved the black UOP Shadow cars ... remember Tom Pryce won the 1975 Race of Champions. Fantastic restoration. Kudos!
When I was a kid was one of the cars that really caught my intention, including the name "shadow" when it referred to something mysterious in this world as the exciting formula one.
Yes! These car were strange and dark, but really quick in track!
The Matra V-12 Engine is known to be a piece of art. Familiar of the winning 1972 Le Mans Matra V-12 Engine
I really liked the paint jobs of the black UOP Shadow cars. I remember seeing George Follmer driving the earlier Shadow Dn1 at practice for the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix. I didn't go to the actual race and I'm glad I missed it.
What a glorious sound back when racing cars actually sounded great. I woke to the V12 Matra at the Glenn at 0800 in 1973 when they began practice that morning only 40 feet from the track. Wow, what a screamer, I love the sound of these wonderful cars. Thanks.
Reading the comments, I just realise how many F1 drivers are out there ready to drive this car and show that driver how to drive properly an F1 car. How the hell they didn't give them a chance to do theire job ?
I know. Maybe there ph. # were unlisted. Lofao
Now this would be a day. A fantastic day. Cheers for sharing with.
What a beauty - and the sound! Love the track! Great vid! Thx for sharing!
Would have been better if it geared for Sear Point, it probably has the Watkins Glen gearing still in it. Beautiful car, great to see it run again.
Many of you have been asking for another video...well I finally got around to finishing an edit from the 2015 Goodwood Road and Racing Club's 73rd Members Meeting. This will be the first of 2 videos from that weekend. Stay tuned for more videos in the future from the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed as well! Thanks everyone! ruclips.net/video/aIZnIaJ_T0M/видео.html
Many thanks sir, awesome machine, goes well and wings ace lookin
I was also there at the Glen in '75 - Saw J.P. during one of the practice sessions - Got and have a great color shot of that car at speed.
Simply wonderful.I'd be nervous as hell driving that fantastic race car, those thing's are not easy to drive I would imagine. And with other cars on the track as well,I think he did a great job. What I wouldn't give to have a go in that!.
You gotta sneak up on some things. Awesome video!!!
Great Video I enjoyed going along for the ride, nice camera work and driving.
Excellent restoration work. Thus preserves the memory of automobismo. passion and dedication. Hugs from Brazil.
Scott - I was THERE in 1975 at the US Grand Prix and saw your car run! We marvelled at the amazing Matra sound as the car would SCREAM up the back straight, that unique V-12 sound echoing off the trees in the most surreal fashion. We tallked about it for years afterwards - and we were still pissed at Regazzoni for flagrantly blocking Fitti for 6 laps, essentially ruining what could have been a great race with Lauda for the victory. Get that puppy up to speed and record the sounds - the doppler effect is unbelievable! Have fun!
This was Barry Evans' baby!
Esse carro liderou a maior parte do GP Brasil de 1975 com Jean Pierre Jarier. Quebrou no final.
Mas não com esse motor e sim com o Cosworth V8...
I LOVE this car. So beautiful and had good races.
maybe let Dad choose the music, too
Jealousy NEVER sounded so good!!!!!
No one here has commented about their hate towards the new V6 hybrids. I assume that it is better to just enjoy the beauty of this car instead. It is amazing how much happiness such racing machines can give :')
That was awesome... thanks !
If it were in Donington, I probably have a picture of it there! :D
that sound!
SHADOW Is one of the most beautiful livery car in F1 1970s beacuse a lot of f1 cars in 1970s are full all colors but this car is full black white and gray color its like you time travel in 1930s or 1920s with black, gray and, white color with a f1 car woow 😍❤🏎⬛⬜
Amazing car
Marvelous engine....
Wow how cool, are these old F 1 for shows events etc expensive?
amazing.. would have been great to see dad? drive too
Great video! And great job. Also what's the music?
That's so cool!!!!
Magnifique ! 👍 Jean Pierre Jarrier, alias godasse de plomb!
Great car thx
can't stop staring at the tach.
Where is now this beautiful Shadow? Who is the lucky owner? :-D
Me too 39 yaers old :(
Does anyone remember an exhibition race at Laguna Seca between 2 Shadow F1's vs 2 Shadow Can-Ams?It took the F1's till the 3rd lap to catch up and they won.
Yes I was there. As I remember, both of the Can-Am cars managed to spin and the F1 cars took the win.
OMG THIS IS JUST FUCKING GREAT..!
CONGRATULATION MAN..! JESUS...!
Love how everyone below thinks they know how to drive and maintain a car like this.... Forget most youtuber's are PRO at just about anything they watch? But let me tell ya, your need more than a mouse and keyboard to do anything like this.
+Toby Tobes Just curious how you found this video?
Searching for original classic 1970's - 1980's F1 on-board footage.
+Toby Tobes Thanks
Hell, he only needs first and second gear.
A quoi sert cette vidéo ? La Matra est absente, et la Shadow tourne au ralenti…
Sears point track on the north end of San Francisco bay
fantastico
Magico
Tragam-na ao Brasil em 2024, mas com ele....................Jean Pierre Jarier ao volante!
I understand why he drives so slowly. If you hit a wall, you are dead.
Carro maravilhoso, porem o piloto é um tremendo marcha ré.
Excelente!!!
I drove my grandmother.
A little bit slow, I was waiting for some hot laps, a couple of. Next time maybe? You're lucky enough to get a hand on one of these and don't make it scream how it deserves? xD
Is this Sonoma
No double-clutch?!
Lol
V12... at this speed...1st laps... why for mr world champion ?
I understand why they took it easy, but it would've been to see a quick lap or two.
I don t... the car either probably ;0)
He visto ancianas manejar más rápido. Pobre Matra. No merece este castigo después de 39 años sin andar
I'll take the sound of a big block over that buzzing anyday.
Torturous to watch.
Run out or not horrendous driving !
Driver wanted.....can we get a driver please
sorry my english ; this car have engine start ? please
Is this Tom Pryce's car?
Read the text at 1:06
Thomas Ottervig #16 Tom Pryce, #17 JP Jarier
What a pity !!!
Not only the dashboard not even match the original equipment of the car, while all the original counters can be easily seen, but even the steering wheel is also not the same as the original!
I am sure of what I say, since the two Shadows JP Jarier were for sale in France in Champigny sur Marne, two kilometers from home, and I asked myself the question of whether I took one or not .. .
In addition, the Smith original tacho of origin is at home in my library of memories hi hi hi ...
As for the pilot, it is our policy in France never to shoot an ambulance (no comment ...)
You don't know what you are talking about! All Shadow cars are different.
This car is TOTALLY original!
Gallina
That car was so fragile
What the hell? Change gears for Christ’s sake. What sort of fuckery is this ???
quitale la musica , es inutil
too slow grandad
beautifull machine , terrible pilot
sonoma raceway
sound is garbage
Grant and Scott,
Very cool video! Thanks for sharing. What a beautiful car! Fantastic restoration. Glad everything went so well. I hated to miss that day. Glad Dennis could be there to share the experience with you.
Grant, I hope to see you soon and meet Scott someday.
Roger Lemmel
Classic Team Shadow
Wow this car is amazing, and it is 44 years old!
Don Nichols was a friend. I hope that he got to see this video. Awesome job Scott and Grant :-)) RacingandCars.com
is it the 1st time he drives a car ?
too funny
Glad to see not everyone is happy keeping these beautiful machines dusting away in a museum and are actually using them for what they were made for in the first place :)
Anybody know how much it would cost to get to drive one of these?
If you have to ask, you cant afford it!
Wonderfull
Awesome car and incredible sound of Matra V12.
Magnifique ! Superbe !
I have seen J.P. Jarier driving Shadow #17 in Interlagos, when I was 15. He led the field until mid race but retired with engine problems. At the end Pace and Emerson Fittipaldi made the first brazilian 1st&2nd in F1 history. The good old times of F1, when it really took a driver to drive an F1 car ! The sound of the Matra 12 engine is quite something else ! But the driver in this clip...
nice vid Scott, have you another test when you give it the full berries?
This might have been one of the cars...was about '72 or 73
Sonoma is amazing. Love that circuit.
torcia muito pela UOP shadow, com Jarier, Jackie Oliver, Ton Pryce, Brian Redman. Agora, minha avá pilotaria melhor. Que piloto de teste ruim.
He starts hitting it at 12:00 mark. What an engine and car!
It made a beautiful noise but it was not a great engine. Big, heavy and not the most powerful. The Cosworth V8 was much better. Jackie Stewart and Tyrell refused to use it in their Matra chassis and bought a second-rate March for a season then built their own car rather than be forced by Matra to use their engine.
Hi i m late on thé subject !! Just found this vidéo...
This is part of the story .
Thé fact is STEWART loved thé car ( MS 80 ) but préféréd the V8 cosworth.
It was thé end of 1968 when he tested it and thé V12 was
2 years old and used only to fit thé
MS 630 / 630- 650 prototypes
. It was near ( bloody puncture at 300 kmh ) to get à podium at Le Mans 68
( MS 630 - 02 )
As Jacky was used to drive à V8 he better used thé cosworth as torque was much than à V12 of course and hé was doubtfull abt thé
Reliability.
Hé was right . Thé rigidity of the frame ( aviation technology ) and V 8
Gave him à first championhip win.
Nxt year 70 FIA changed thé rules and fuel must be store in soft bags
And no more inside thé frame as MS 8
Matra cld not use same technology and built thé MS 120 not rigid enough . Driven by Beltoise and Pescarolo except à podium at Monaco thé car was far not so compétitive as the MS 80.
Thé V12 was in trouble with dry oil pan which did nt empty thé oil and
Gave à loose of power for 2 years !!
On static position it was not visible !!!
Stewart got thé good feeling.
March 701 was an an anvil.
Jacky was about compétitive but others / Andretti Servoz Gavin Amon Péterson Cevert and siffert were never in thé match.
Except Amon second at Spa behind Rodriguez ( Brm )
The New Tyrrell was welcome !!
MATRA stopper F1 in 73 but kept
Engine office with good results.
( le Mans 73 and 74 / 2 times Word champions with prototypes 670 b )
The engine then was as powerfull as the Ferrari and better than Cosworth .
When Shadow built this one off in 1975 the engine was still not at its maximum despite Ligier won in Sweden...
After 1980 thé V12 Matra type 76 and furthermore 82 was probably
The most powerfull. With 530 / 540 hp. It was rhe end after loose of championsghip at the Last course !
Nxt must be à double turbo unit which was tested with 850 hp but
Peugeot expected to get this without any payment !!
End of Matra Story.
Thé actual story is à small firm named EPAF in Romorantin France is still building Matra on original drawings .
No différences !!!!
Fantastic cars hand made !!
They récréatif MS 610 and MS 640
And hv build formula 1 MS 11 V12 as well as 630 coswirth and 650 V12 ..
Hv à look on their site www Epaf . Fr
So beautiful
Great !!
My granny used to drive faster than this on her way to church.
He never got out of 3rd gear....
Mi tía Porota maneja mejor.
