I feel like one of the things about people "complaining" about a preset that focuses on movement, specifically one like Leg Day that gives you flight right at the start, is that it takes away from the "story" of a randomizer, which I feel is kinda more of a RUclips thing than a Twitch thing, given that you know how long a video is going to be (pure speculation on my part, but still).
When you want to watch something like a randomizer stream, a TV show, a movie, etc., you want to be able to follow a flow of events that lead up to something at the end of the story, following the twists and turns of the "story" and see how the protagonists react to them, which for a randomizer would be the moments of progression that you acquire throughout the run, a la flight, Jewel of Open, Holy Glasses, etc. With modes like Leg Day, it takes away one of the steps of the progression (sometimes multiple, like needing Form and Power of Mist together, or Leap Stone and Gravity Boots together), which makes the "story" feel simpler, and thus less engaging.
One of your viewers also raised a good point about watching versus playing a randomizer; I, personally, do enjoy watching some of the "weirder" movement seeds because they can be pretty silly to see happening, as well as show off the way you can play the game with lots of skills built up over time, but I don't know if I'd be interested in playing them myself for the reason of the fewer progression steps/"story" of the seed, especially given that SotN doesn't have a lot of key progression items outside of movement (and some progression items typically only give you access to a single check, like with Merman Statue).
That's my view on it, at least.

      I totally agree with you.
I use to think that having flight from the beginning made progression less interesting. But I think your thoughts were really precise.

Once we were closing in on the final passes of creating the Leg Day preset, one of the things that I started loving about the preset was that it allowed the people competing in test runs to just shoot the shit the whole time. The other movement-based presets require quite a bit of focus to move quickly through, but Leg Day is chill from start to finish, both from the movement tech standpoint and the "mid-high" complexity aspect. It's very easy to get into the Flow State with it. I also wanted a preset that could be played by people that could only play Rando on a phone, since PCs aren't as common as they once were. I think we nailed that.
I said all that to say, I love that the whole video is you having a discussion about game design. The game was fun, and you got to be a streamer who was fully engaged in a topic of discussion that interested you. Great success in terms of my personal goals for the preset, as far as im concerned.

The movement presets really let someone with insane skills show off how really cool movement is in the game. Love watching you do them. Leg Day is definitely awesome!

The beautity of sotn is in the fact that it has so many oddities that will present themselves when you are NOT moving so fast. Take vile stacks for instance: it would never have been discovered if players were wingsmashing all the time. That said, I love seeing you play all of these presets.

I really liked it when you mixed Leg Day with the area rando. It really is fun to watch you flow through the castle.

I have a mixed opinion on Leg Day. I like it fine. my beef with it is that backdash feeling overpowered, but I think part of that is just your execution makes it look literally effortless as opposed to just much faster and easier than shield dashes. the doublejump dive kick flight movement actually is great as far as I'm concerned

I dunno. Imagine we turn the dial all the way down on combat: make a preset that just removes enemies and focuses on moving through the castle.
That wouldn't be as interesting to watch.

I dont like the movement presets that give you a ton of skills at the start because IMO the best part of SOTN (especially the randomizer) is the gradual progression of your movement options. You slowly gain more options and try to go as optimally as you can with what you have at the moment, it requires more adapting on the platers part as the run progresses. When you have everything at the start, you just GO, there is way less decision making.

As a "since release" sotn player, I really gotta agree. Combat is very basic. Like most enemies have maybe 2 attacks and possible an evade jump. Even some bosses. It's good enough. It's got more going on than most metroid games. But it's still not a comprehensive system. Just kill the enemy quick before it can attack much

  • @azerlox

My take on Leg Day (and Nimble to an extent) is not that it isn't fun to see how quickly one moves through the game. Quick games usually generate less time to play and therefore allow one to play multiple games in one sitting. That can lead to more fun randomizers.
That being said, where is the challenge? Obviously, combat is not the main focus of the game. It's an area platformer that has some combat elements to it. If one is able to quickly move through the map and avoid combat entirely, what does that honestly leave the player? One may be better off playing Boss Rush mode because it almost accomplishes the same result.
Imagine a Super Mario game where Mario has infinite double jumps and doesn't get hit by enemies while holding down the run button. Makes for funny skips, but it can get boring after a while.
I may not be a big fan of Leg Day, but i can see how some can really enjoy it and spend their time playing them more than other presets. This was still a fun and entertaining video and i thank you for your time and content!

I can only speak for myself, but I like watching presets more when flight is something you don't start with. Have nothing against the back dash or weapons.

The way I see it, while a sizable portion of the phenomenon with viewers disliking high mobility seeds is probably related to the whole "glitches are cheating" thing, there's also a sizable portion people who find high mobility seeds boring exactly because they like the mobility of SotN, and just having that all handed at the start can feel like there's not really anything to work toward other than a checklist, and like there isn't any variance in movement across the run--for the viewer, at least. This is something that I've noticed across randomizers in different games which also have a focus on movement--and as a player, it's going to usually dodge that, because there *is* more going on under the hood that you're interacting with, but for viewers, it can be hit or miss.
I think that lycanthrope, for example, manages to largely dodge this because while wolf is quite capable, it can be difficult to wrangle, and it can be fun regardless seeing speedrunners wrangle that--and the fact that wolf gets a bit of spotlight that it doesn't often get helps as well. Hence, it being given at the start as a mobility option is seen in less of a "boring" light.
I still often find randos like leg day at least somewhat fun to watch as a spectator, but it's a place I've been in before with some randos.
Of course, this is just based on personal experience.

Nimble is very streamlined. I enjoy nimble, but there are so many tech options that are irrelevant in nimble because of the starting gear.
Most runs shows off bat movement sooner or later so nimble doesn't really show anything unique either. Unlike leg day, lychan, etc.
Nimble is a bit vanilla for me as a viewer, and sometimes I want vanilla.

Personally enjoy the relatively quick, movement-heavy presets. Combat just doesn't have a lot of depth in SotN, but the movement feels great. Absolutely S tier IMO.

I think a lot of people who watch randomizers just low-key want the streamer to suffer a little bit and getting good movement options from the start takes away from that somehow
I don't agree, I think good movement options are great

It's just deliberate action games with more importance given to the combat gameplay, having to manage Stamina and risking losing your savings if you die.
