They need to do a documentary on black gospel going all the way back to the early 1900. A lot people don’t know the history of this genre it’s very special indeed. Most singers old and new started in the church.
It boggles me how much this sounds like something I’d hear on the radio in the MoTown era. It truly reveals how much popular mainstream music stems from the evolution of the blues through jazz and into something uniquely all those things and more. Here we have the content, which is religious in general, but when you add the specificity of the performers emotional appeal/evangelical joy? It’s a whole other level. Also “the case dismissed case dismissed case dismissed” bridge is the kind of bridge that must drive Stevie Wonder crazy he didn’t write or use. There is an awesome pop hit somewhere that uses a sample from this performance.
