Lecture: Art as a Vehicle for Sacred Knowledge by Richard Temple

- This talk aims to show that sacred art is the product of ritual practice. The art is the form, the practice is the content. The schools of wisdom at the heart of our ancient traditions had access to knowledge of the laws of Nature, Man and the Cosmos and they could express such knowledge through the forms of sacred buildings and images, through the practice of art.
The Christian Gospel tells us that the Universe, or the Kingdom of Heaven, is within us. The contemplative prayer of the Hesychast monasteries in the Christian East or the meditation techniques of India and South Asia or the esoteric traditions of Islam, share in common the search for higher knowledge found within. The process of the search transforms the searcher who, in turn, transforms the materials of his or her craft.
Correction: Slides 8 and 9 of Christ the Holy Wisdom is in the Byzantine Museum in Thessaloniki not the Byzantine Museum in Athens. Saint Basil the Great taught in the 4th Century, not the 9th.
