In a way - I feel sad for some Afrikaner people. They are still trapped in the past. The reason some Afrikaans students and perhaps staff won't accept black people is that they still would like to hold on to apartheid. This of course is not possible in the present time. They have been overtaken by events and refuse to move with the times. Some Afrikaners are generally paranoid people - they somehow believe that there is concerted move by black people and others to obliterate Afrikaans and their culture. And they will resist those attempts at all costs. They will assert their rights by "fighting back" and defend their right to exist as Afrikaners - and to practice their culture. The point they are missing is that no one can take away from you - your language and culture. It is who you are. They should take a leaf from the Zulu people's book. Zulu people are proud of their culture and language. They speak their language and practice their culture everyday - and do not feel threatened by anyone. Just the other day they had their king installed. Zulu people do not need anyone's permission to practice their culture and they also do not force it on others. Afrikaners should just continue to be who they are and not worry about what others think about their language and their culture. No one wants to take their language and culture away from them. However - in the present day South Africa - the system of apartheid cannot continue to exist - and they need to come to terms with that. Stellenbosch university does receive a government subsidy along with the other public institutions. It therefore means everyone has a right to attend this university. Therefore Afrikaans cannot continue to be used as a medium of instruction because you have other students who do not speak Afrikaans - and are part of the university. The University of the Western Cape for example, which was originally meant for Coloured people - who also speak Afrikaans as their first language - has a diverse student body - and their medium of instruction is English. If Stellenbosch university continues to practice apartheid - they are running the risk of being isolated and boycotted by other universities and institutions internationally. If that were to occur - that would be a sad day for them - because it would bring back the echoes of apartheid sanctions for the university - and would spell an end for the university. I am sure they do not want that to happen.

If it's interpersonal relationships being discussed, then shouldn't the onus be on the person wanting to enter these conversations?
I can understand if the call is to make stellies an English medium institution, but we can't now control people's personal spaces.
Perhaps just learn Afrikaans if you want to build a relationship with your Afrikaner colleagues or friends.
We should be open to learning other people's cultures 'cause if you're in an Afrikaner place, then just adapt to their culture.
We can't always want White people to change for us.
    We are South Africans.
    All cultures matter.

English is not the language of Afrikaners.
Even they don't like speaking it.
      They want to speak Afrikaans.
      I've seen the difference.
I had Afrikaners that I worked with, with whom I spoke English with. And our relationship was just normal and friendly.
But one day, I just spoke Afrikaans to them. And I was instantly in the friend group. It was like I unlocked a different part of the world.
At that point I decided to embrace the culture of another person, and respect their language and it was fine.
This isn't a bad thing to do especially when you're in an area with mostly people speaking one language.
English is great as a universal language that we speak to communicate, but as it seems, it is not great as a language used to connect with some people.

@@lu881 There is not such thing as an Afrikaner area in South Africa, the fact that you compromise yourself to learn their language show that you are a slave who wants to please your white Masters. White people should learn African languages be force and go speak their cape dutch in Europe. This is our land, we call the shots in this land...

It's typical passive aggressive racism we must learn english and Afrikaans while a minority can't even to a single proper sentence in any of these majority spoken languages in SA. Please pry your head out this white supremacy attitude, it's not helping.

      Oh bullsh*t!
How many Afrikaners stop speaking Afrikaans when they're working with Black people and only speak English?
      And another thing.
How would an Afrikaner learn to speak a Bantu language, when there are so many? You want that person to Setswana and Tsonga and Sepedi all in one workplace?
      NO IT DOESN'T WORK?!
Why?! Because not all Bantu speak the same language, so you speak English to communicate.
But you racists act like all White people speak the same language!
This is a story about Afrikaners!
If you're in a place with only Afrikaners, it helps to speak Afrikaans.
Just like if I was in Venda, it would help to know how to speak tshiVenda!
Btw, the Whites that speak Bantu languages are usually farmers, because they work with local farmworkers, and so they learn the language.
I know Afrikaners who speak fluent Setswana because they've lived and worked in an area that only had Batswana!
Pry YOUR head out of your ignorance!
And LEARN TO EMBRACE THE CULTURES OF OTHERS!

Orania is a cultural enclave. They are there to preserve our language and culture that is being destroyed by taking over our educational institutions. They are not political. There has never been an incident of racism reported in Orania. Blacks seem to obsess about Orania, but you will find that people there welcome you wholeheartedly - regardless of your prejudice. Although I'm not a religious Afrikaans person, I wish them well as these few people struggle to keep Afrikaans alive. Don't you have better things to do than to run down Afrikaans people? If it was not for Afrikaans people in this country, you would not have had a school to go to. Totally ungrateful.

Interestingly enough, I studied at a different institution before finally starting and now studying at Stellenbosch.
I've been here now for a few months and can i sat how disgusted and shocked i was? There's surprisingly many times where i felt like I'm not welcomed here. I felt more welcomed by the people I studied with before than in Stellenbosch because there's a shockingly huge amount of students thats actually really racist towards the white students (also men and straight students). It's very shocking how heavily race and all that gets focused on and you can't disagree with them.
(Did that mistake when pointing out how some of the things don't really belong in a topic. Got told my opinion doesn’t matter because I'm white)
Brushing aside the frighteningly amount of double standards, there's definitely people I'm happy i met and still manage to meet. I just learned how cautious you must be here

Do they feel 'triggered' because they have to listen to Afrikaans!!? Afrikaans students are bilingual... what stops English speaking students from speaking Afrikaans.. if they are not able to, or unwilling to speak a second language, and therefore feel excluded... there are other Universities. Get a grip!

  • @gwenbaxter7854

Why can't the non Afrikaans speaking students choose a university with their language choice. In my time we could only be educated at intuitions of our language choice. We didn't even consider changing the status quo.

Black students are not suppose to feel welcome at Stellenbosch University. Why? It has nothing to do with racism but all to do with who you are and what you believe, your tradition, background and with who and what you want to identify yourself.
Devision is a given and unity is just not possible. The World will never ever be ONE. The Creator brought devision... Satan wants unity. Rather than embracing the richness of our different cultures, backgrounds and different perspectives, black people (but others as well) sow more devision, hate and chaos in trying to wish away our differences.
As a Jew, Zulu, Muslim or Indian (or anybody else) all live in a complex modern world where we have to work and survive, but never ever could we get rid of our pasts. Finding unity will always be short term, but when it comes to growing up and preparing for life, the past, culture, language and religion will always play a roll. So a Muslim will not feel welcome in a Jewish school. Can we now get rid of all schools based on religion?
My view is this. If you want to live life to the full, embrace it... but to sow hate and want to try and change everything to your individual viewpoints is absurd.
Stellenbosch is an Afrikaans University period. They cater for others and everyone is welcome. When in Rome do as the Romans.

@@aliziwetomose6609 Dear Aliziwe, When you comment... explain yourself. In this world I learned to respect and tolerate everyone, but also to accept and give room to all viewpoints. Just as I cannot explain why Muslims do not want to give up their holy sites in Israel or we can never ever get to a point when the other is more important than the self. It is so easy to regard oneself as always right, informed, liberal, in line with the majority view, but never truth, honesty or what we as society really needs. Most of the time a handful is correct, not the world.

It IS our own school and we're subsidizing it.
Rather go to Afriforum's Sol-Tec if you want an Afrikaans institution. That's privately owned.
