_Velocities by Joseph Schwantner is a flagship marimba solo, considered by the professional percussion community to be one of "the big ones".
There are many significant challenges in Velocities, not the least of which is the fact that once the player begins playing there are no moments of rest or respite for the duration. Add to that some very un-idiomatic licks and wide range jumps and you've got yourself a very advanced solo.
Musically this piece visits some very distinct areas with different tonalities and styles, often relying on quartal and quintal harmonies and lines.
