The minimalist mindset definitely causes me to ask more questions before purchases. While I still enjoy looking through clothing websites and placing items in the cart, most of the time, I will just close the website without checking out at all. Makes me feel like I have fun "shopping" without actually spending any money and adding clothes to my wardrobe I really don't need.
For sure. I am finally replacing some of my windows- they are from 1983. 😳 So are my bathrooms but the bathrooms work. The windows dont. But I waited a year and a half to replace just half of them and i do feel like I made a good choice to wait.
Agree. Need more positive role models represented by your demographic. Great job. Trust me, it’s worth it. Once the $ leaves your hands, that’s it. Being debt free is the BEST FEELING😀
We delayed moving together, building our house, getting children, getting married ... everything comes at the right time. I am so glad for everything. It is hard to be minimalist and think about getting things so much more than before , but it was one of the best decisions for us! Greetings from Austria
Sarah, I like how you say, "Slow living." I recently cancelled my Facebook account. I abstained from Facebook for about seven years. I decided to revisit the platform when the pandemic hit as a way of connecting with the outside world. I became so distracted; I could not do any of my usual activities. I am now able to breathe and work on re-establishing my routines and schedules in order to live a balanced lifestyle.
Sarah, you were right on target for every point you made. Been a minimalist for quite awhile now and can relate to everything you said!! Great video and I know others will benefit from your excellent advice. You are looking well too!
Don't have any money to get things. I am still feeling drawn to instant gratification because I don't get any social interactions and when I did( many years ago)nobody cared about what I've had to say. So, low self-esteem might push people who actually have money to make immediate purchases due to trying to fill a void. It's not exactly healthy but that's probably why. I don't have options to try to involve myself in that way but I do know the pull of unnecessary wants.
I love how you and your husband work together. It’s wonderful to hear 💕 And good decision on delaying having kids, kids are lovingly expensive 🤗 I’m sure when the time comes & you are ready, you and your husband will be very prepared!
Oh, the irony! I was in the middle of some online professional development, saw your new upload and stopped the learning to watch it! I think I need this video! 😏😏😏 x
The moving as soon as you make more money is so real! I have unfortunately seen people put themselves in some long term difficult situations due to that.
We saved for our renovations as well. We don't replace our vehicles because we "want" new ones. We wait until we "need" another vehicle. When we "need" another vehicle it will be because the repair would be too costly not because it's old or it has rust. All of our vehicles are already old and have rust but are still dependable and reliable. We are also saving for the replacement vehicle and will only buy it with the cash we have on hand.
When I plan on buying something online, I put it down n my cart & then leave application (Amazon). I go back in a couple of days & see if I still like or feel need to purchase. I try to wait a week or so & then go back again. Many times I decide I don’t need or want it if I wait.
I do this as well and it really works. I just put the item on my wish list. On etsy I put the item in my cart and leave it. Sometimes, I get an email with a coupon code from the seller for items in my cart.
This is a great video! We waited three years for children. I knew we would never have that newlywed period again in our lives. We didn't realize we would experience infertility and had to wait even longer but I'm glad we had those special newlywed years. We also paid our two homes off early. On our second one, we saved approximately $140,000 in interest. It is an awesome feeling to be debt free including your mortgage. We have been married 33 years and have had a house payment for only about 10 years of that time. It also enabled me to be able to stay home part of the time with our child, to homeschool, and only have to work part time or not at all for most of our marriage, which I love. As far as buying things, I wanted (but didn't need) new barstools. I waited several years. I finally found some 90% off for $6.99 each! Your honeymoon sounds AHMAZING!! Wish you had a video! :)
I love this! This is a perfect example of why delayed gratification makes such a difference! I don't have a video of that honeymoon, but I do have a video from an even more epic trip we did in 2018: ruclips.net/video/-DGaM73SX4Q/видео.html
@@AbundantlyMinimal Thanks, Sarah (Chris W. in your group :) ) And yes, we live in a low cost state and our first house was $30,000 believe it or not. So we started with something small and now have something bigger with acreage.
OMG! This is the first video I have watch at least 4 times, so I could take notes. You have a wonderful sense of insight on things about us. Thank you so much!
Very interesting, thanks for the inspiration! I've never heard of delayed gratification before, I even had to translate it first. But now that you talked about it, I realized that this is exactly what I've done for a long time
Well done! I really liked this video, the concept appealed to me, and it was well delivered. You seem like a nice person, a real down to earth and sensible, not spoilt kind of gal! ☘️🌼🌈
We tend to delay big purchases and now are doing the same for small things too. We have put off upgrading our bathrooms - until tiles fell off the shower wall in our en-suite and we discovered there was no water proofing and mould - yuk!!. The renovation on that has been put off until we are off our current stage 4 lock downs ( quite strict). So we share the main bathroom with my adult daughter. We have saved up for the renovation, so that is not an issue, it just meant we rearranged our plans from the laundry to the en-suite
@@AbundantlyMinimal Thank you, it will all work out in the long run, Covid has been a pain for everyone in some form or another. Some of us are lucky enough to not have got it. I am so glad you are looking so much better
You made some very good decisions financially. Paying off your condo earlier is awesome. Even paying one and a half of a payment at a time shortened our loan. Be careful how much you spend and home improvements on your bathroom. Improvements to a condo may or may not bring back the value you interested in it. Ask a realtor
Really love this video and the thoughts you have behind it! I feel like shopping (whether online or in person) is best done when you place a limit, whether if that's with your budget, the hangers in your closet or with other things that aren't used with the right intentions. TFS! :)
This is a really tough topic. Living for the moment and our immediate gratification is so ingrained in our society's thinking. Thank you for sharing your ideas and tips!
That was SO helpful for me. Thank you! I am working on becoming more mindful and downsizing my possessions, so I appreciate your videos quite a lot. Stay safe, well and may good come your way. :)
Hi Sarah, such great tips and advice. I have tried a few things out like using up what's in the freezer before shopping and trying to shop for clothes I actually need rather than want. Its surprising how much you can save by delaying shopping. Also so pleased you are well again! Take care of yourself xx 💕
Great advise as always ✌🌱👑💜 my 3yr old 20 dollar rice steamer broke today 😢 and I reeeeaaaallly want an instapot but it is sitting in my online cart just waiting for me to think it over for awhile.
Thank you! I'm sorry to hear the rice steamer broke, but I have to say that I love our Instant Pot so much and it makes great rice (among many other things)! It is great that you are taking the time to think it over!
The instant pot will be a great upgrade from the rice steamer. If you have a Kohl's by you, they have great deals, just watch their ads. I got my 6qt on black Friday for $60. Totally worth it!
I am definitely a weak kitten when it comes to book buying lol. If a new book in a series I have comes out, I tend to buy it, even if I am not "caught up". Conversely though, if there are many times where I will buy a new release (or, more likely, preorder), and read it right away, because I have been eager to do so.
This is completely random, but I absolutely love the blue wall behind you… It’s the perfect shade of blue. Would you mind sharing what the color and brand is? Thank you! 🎨
My mother grew up without a father and partly raised her two younger brothers. She was frugal. She wanted a dinning room and living room set of furniture in their new rented home. So each week see went to the shop and put another one pound deposit on it (this was 70 years ago). Eventually she saved the full amount and it was delivered. It was nearly 20 years before they took out a loan to buy a car. She told me of a different idea about money. During the war years her family having a spare room had to have a lodger. He must have been a character and I don't recall why he was not in the armed forces, perhaps a reserved occupation. He owed money to every one and they all had to chase him for repayments. He said that when he died there would be the biggest number of mourners ever at his funeral. They would all be mourning the loss of their money. No surprise I have mixed views on hp (hire purchase), loans and delayed gratification. During one university vacation I spotted a camera I wanted and arranged with the shop to pay a weekly amount and take it when I have paid it off. It took me most of the summer to do that. I bought my own hi-fi in carefully selected pieces over a period of months and got the last component as my discount having spent 7 month's salary by this time on it. But the model I wanted was "upgraded" and an upgraded price by a month's salary. The cars were each partly purchased with a loan. Taken out for 5 years and paid back in 12 to 18 months. There was no penalty back then for early repayment. Now many deals are fixed interest and you still have to pay the whole interest and that assumes you can even get a fair deal. Interest rates for loans were higher than for mortgages but now an extended overdraft is 40% (used to be 8%) even with base rates now an all time low of 0.01%. With monthly costs rising and incomes stagnated for over two decades it is harder than ever to save, to put money aside for a pension and even in a welfare state where medical treatment is free at the point of use the drugs have a contribution and you may have miles to travel to the local hospital with some of the most expensive parking costs anywhere in the country - even when capped because of your appointment letter. With the changing circumstances you have to balance every purchase decision. Work out the need (change in transport for a different job - needed now or you can't take the offer) and the over all cost of loan etc. to the benefit in use. I even factor in getting the right item first and not lesser just about do stuff when my choices mean that my 1980 hi-fi is still running (repaired, several times) and my 1992 washing machine is more likely to continue to work than anything I could buy today that hardly lasts 5 years. Even my computer has had no change for 7 years.and most of it dates from 2007. Sadly this may no longer work - stuff really isn't well built and high end prices often means brand label or feature bloat that provides little if any value for your use. Sure you know that newly published book has to wait for the others in the series you have still not read, but if you don't buy until you do have the time to read it can you still find it new or even second hand? I have a number of series started where I still can't find the concluding book or worse one in the middle missing. One day it may turn up electronically as an ebook, pdf or audio book and at least I can read it then. Another trick I tried, but has not worked for me. If you don't know if an item is suitable get in a few. Pick the one that works and return/resell the others. Return of new might work, but not if you have to try it out. Selling (same problem when decluttering) is harder than it used to be. Listing on eBay was simple with flat rate fees. Now each item category has a different rate, different caps and eBay charge a fee for postage so you have to charge packaging to include the fee amount. At one time postage for books was limited to a paper back - those beautiful encyclopedias that weigh 10kg you had post out of your own pocket and are not worth enough to cover the fees. Besides reselling being more effort than expected, I found that making a decision on several similar but not identical alternatives to be much harder than even parting with cherished memory items. As the shops don't stock the choices or even have any at all you can only handle them by ordering online. Yeah, I know, 1st world problems ...
That bathroom is great. Put up a designer shower curtain and only paint one wall and it would totally change the look of the room. Switch out the faucet yourself. It's easy and inexpensive..

That's a great hack, Tanja! Sometimes that is how I feel when I would try things on at thrift shops, even though I wouldn't purchase most items.
I do the same thing! Usually by the next day I'm over the items lol
I like how you talk about delaying home improvements. Seems like people always dive headfirst into those when they still work functionally.
