After watching episode 1 my biggest problem is not the show but what Martin has written. Spoiler (but you've likely seen it by now) below: Either the showrunner failed to convincingly adapt for the screen how the assassins so royally messed up by killing the wrong target or Martin has sunk to "Threes Company" level sitcom story telling. The main assassin was clearly told which son was the the target even being warned by Daemond that Aemond was a skilled warrior and to make sure he brought help. The order wasn't "kill the first Targaryen boy child you find." So I was not only shocked but really disappointed Martin chose to go this way, it's stupid driven story telling.
@@RTDKRunner except the scene didn't really show that. Unless I missed something there was no dialogue or any indication they searched let alone were unable to find Aemond. The scene went from 'this is were the royals live' to 'tell us which one of the twins is a boy?'
@@furiousgreg4397 they wandered around the area. saw the king and his guards, had Blood mess up when he looked in a separate room, beat a hasty retreat to the room of entry where they got lucky and happened on to easier targets. I interpreted that as meaning - these are two immoral characters, running low on time, and deciding to take the 'easier way to money'. they didn't really have a logical choice - once they were discovered they 'd have to tie up or kill the queen and her children anyway (not without risk in itself as it'll cause commotion). so they made a split second decision to get something resembling what they came for and get the hell out of there.
I mean they did get the gist of blood and cheese enough to be OK, but they didn't make it nearly as gripping, stressful, and haunting as they could have based on the story itself from the source!
Literally everyone complained last season about it moving too fast, the slower pace is equivalent to the earlier seasons of game of thrones. HEAVY SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I haven't read the book this is based on so I don't know all the details but I know some of the plot points of Blood & Cheese. One of King Aegon's young sons is beheaded by two characters called Blood and Cheese and the head is taken by them to show as evidence of the kill. From what I've heard about the leaks this happens offscreen, there's no taunting from Cheese and Helaena doesn't have to choose which kid she has to have killed. Why would they not end episode one in a similar fashion to how the Game of Thrones episode ended where Jaime got his hand cut off where it came out of nowhere and shocked the audience. The scene should be Helaena chooses her infant son to die and it plays out like we think he's gonna die only for Blood to turn around and chop off Jaehaerys head onscreen with both Helaena and Alicent screaming in shock as it cuts to credits. It sounds like such a missed opportunity!

Completely the opposite, this had a woman in the middle, not because she was an unearned badass but because there was no precedent in the realm of who the next ruler should be, if the King did not have a male son. Maegor (the 3rd King, and 2nd King’s brother) took the throne by force not by right.
