Hi Brian, I've already started my fall garden with New Kuroda carrots, Purple Dragon carrots, Kyoto Red carrots, Uzbek gold carrots, Navone Gold rutabagas, Purple Top rutabagas, and turnips. I have five newly sprouted cucumber vines growing, and a batch of Danvers and red potatoes that will be ready to harvest in about a week. I will be resowing the red potatoes with potatoes from an earlier harvest. My zucchini are done, and dying, two plants. Tomorrow, I'll pull them up, and replace them with lemon squash, and yellow scallop squash. In August, I will be planting more turnips, Yod Fah, Chinese Cabbage, Bok Choy, and maybe some radishes. As the temperatures cool, in September, I will be planting the bulk of my fall garden. First, I have to prepare another 4x8 foot raised bed. I'm running our of garden space. LOL. I have a goal to produce half of the food I eat, or more, from my garden next year. I'm learning to can, freeze, and dehydrate, and have a deep freezer that is nearly full, and tomatoes and pickles on the shelf ready to eat this winter. I'm out of basil. Any guess at what I am picking tomorrow and dehydrating?

Don't forget you can jumpstart a new tomato plant right now by cutting a "sucker" out of the armpit of an existing tomato plant. This is often called cloning because you get an exact replica of the parent plant. Stick the stem in water up to the first leaf in a sunny windowsill and wait about 2 weeks for the roots to form, then plant it. The more stem the better, so clip a leaf or two off. I've got 2 San Marzano clones going right now for fall!

@@apiecemaker1163 Maybe they have to be an indeterminate type in order to clone? The San Marzanos I cloned produced maybe 5 lbs of tomatoes. But then, I have a first frost date of December 19th. And to make them root, you can persuade them by dipping the stems in rooting hormone powder before putting them in water.

100+ daily in Austin, Texas, appreciating the survivors. Collards, peppers (can't set fruit over 100 but they're hanging in there till cools in fall.) One purple pepper - will seed-save that as it's proven itself.
Fruit trees like pear, apple, elderberry doing well in dappled shade from trees & tall bamboo. People have a range of opinions on my "urban forest", especially the bamboo - some really enjoy the shade and the look, lush contrast to sun-baked yards with grass & a few bushes, trees. Others criticize ... but garden shaded by bamboo on west, south flourishes, & it makes yard livable / house a few degrees cooler. The south garden in sun takes a lot of watering & even what survives can't produce.
It all works when you think of it as learning, finding out what to do coming season. Thank you all for sharing, it helps to know we're all going through a rough patch.

This was my 1st year for this garden. I was so excited. I started seeds(for the 1st time) and was getting good results. I was set to harvest. Went out to pick and they were all gone. Someone came in and picked all they could reach. I planted on a trellis and I needed to use a ladder to finish picking the. The bug got my zucchini 🥵 I replanted but not 1 came up. And again and nothing! I have always had a great garden in Indiana, but still learning Texas. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you for the encouragement, your enthusiasm is contagious! Summer has been dreadful here in Central Florida with high heat and one storm after another, impossible to garden outdoors! So I am looking forward to Fall gardening and Winter gardening.

Tomatoes: I'm in NE/Zone 6 and had a couple of really sad-looking cherry tomato plants (long story) in containers but found abundant new growth at the bottom so cut the spindly stems way back, sacrificing only a few small fruit and blossoms. Should be enough time to at least give them a chance and maybe have a second, better result. Nothing to lose, and who doesn't love a comeback story?! Appreciate the tips and enthusiasm here.

I'm in Montana and our first frost date is Sept 1st (we have only 90 frost free days) but the good news is we usually have a good month of great weather after that first frost. We watch the weather like a hawk and can cover tender veggies if it's just a night or two of frost. I might try a zucchini in a grow bag now and see if I can get a few little ones for my friend who loves it with tomatoes. I can throw the bag into the greenhouse if it gets too cold. This is my first year with a greenhouse, grow bags, and a grow light seedling system (Though I've been gardening for 45 years). I'm having so much fun! I love your videos...I'm a SoCal girl born and raised, but married a Montanan, so here I am. It's definitely a challenge with our cold and dry winds...

Started with an extra long cold spring, followed by a great extensive rain But..had a hail day that sent every plant to the beginning. The current heat pulled them through with new leaves and blossoms, sheer agony on how the plants will finish by the end of August. The pests especially the giant whopper grass hoppers...worrisome. Drying herbs, putting up raspberries and delighted about the kohlrabi. Planted cucumbers as suggest first week of July and this week are growing like they need to beat the eventual frost comming sometime soon in our northern state. Thanks for the new list. I am going to experiment and see what might slide to finish line of summers end. I have buckets, boxes, high raised beds, and normal ground level growing around here all avoiding an extreme deer hazard ( which I am just about to have under control). Thanks for the helpfull encouragement, lists and your great knowledge as we all cope with our particular environments.

Thank you for your video! It's been a hot summer in SC, but thankfully, I've not had much problems with pests. But my plants have just not grown like they should have. My cucumbers have beautiful vines, full of flowers. But I never got one cucumber. I had to hand pollinate my squash. And my tomatoes just didn't do much of anything. I sure hope my fall/winter garden does better!!

I just saw some type of deer deter in a bottle, think I saw on Amazon or else was ace hardware or tractor supply, maybe try that, it was for a few others besides deer I think. Also may sound yucky to some but human urine can also deter some animals, I use to joke w my sons when little n we live in the country, to go pee by my garden haha, no idea if they ever did haha
