Day Out With Thomas on the Strasburg Rail Road

- Thomas the Tank Engine and Percy operate on the Strasburg Rail Road. "Day Out With Thomas" is an opportunity to see and ride behind Thomas the Tank Engine in full size. The Strasburg Rail Road does an excellent job, coordinating their regular hourly tourist train with Canadian National 2-6-0 89 to meet with Thomas the Tank Engine and Percy as they leave the station every half-hour.

As much as I still like Thomas at age 18 I'm still hopping to attend a day out with Thomas event in the future since I want to see what the event is like myself wether or not I'm too old for it. But I'm hoping some day to attend one and see what it's like
as a attender, its pretty fun.

I certainly hope that number 89 will operate for many more years on the Strasburg railroad and I wish they would put her original Three chime whistle back on her the last time she had that whistle was back in 2010
The 89 just completed a 1472 day inspection this past fall. Strasburg is one of few places in the United States to use up service days before the 15-year deadline, but 89 still won't need major work for the better part of a decade.
Dynamo Productions that's good news to hear I surely miss her three chime whistle she last war in 2010 type up Strasburg railroad 89 2010 and it'll pop up what that whistle sounds like. K&L Trainz has it exact whistle on the E10 class mogul for Trainz simulator here is a link to a video of 89 and 2010 with her original 3 chime whistle that she's had for many years including from a few videos in 1991

Have you ever noticed that the Strasburg has a platform 9 3/4? (harry potter reference)
It also references how many cars the platform can handle. Anything over nine cars is a bit long for the platform.
I heard Thomas doesn't go to leman place Junction, where does it stop at then?
As it shows in the video, he goes as far as Esbenshade. This is done mostly to maintain the schedule where he departs every half hour.

I am all confused on what is happening to 475... Has she already gone through her rebuild or is that still to come? I was there a couple months ago and she was pulling my train.
The 475 was supposed to get the 1472 day inspection last winter, but other projects got in the way. The plan now is 475 will use up a limited number of days this year (reportedly less than 100) before it goes down for the rebuild sometime this year.

It's probably custom, based on real British whistles.

Percy isn’t a steam engine, it’s a dummy. Therefore it doesn’t require the cowcatcher.

Because nobody wants them.

The ‘Nooga Railfan people want them but it will be really expensive to do that
Thomas is the draw to these events. Adding more characters adds to the cost but doesn't add to the crowds. Ironically enough, Percy takes cars away that could be used behind Thomas.

Percy does not have any functional components, he's basically like a caboose. He sure looks the part.

Thomas is an actual steam engine, therefore needs a pilot. Percy is not a steam locomotive, a dummy and more in line as a fancy shoving platform. Therefore he can operate without pilot.

That would be too much work. Besides, they wanted Percy to be a non-operating replica for ease of travel and operation by non-steam crews on other railroads that host the Day Out with Thomas events.

Strasburg was paid to make a shoving platform that resembles Percy. Building and even rebuilding a standard gauge tank engine to resemble Percy would still cost about six figures.
