Fantastic scenery , amazing spell of weather for your trip too . Like your "feel young " comment , I get the same feeling when I'm out riding . About to tick over 64 years , still riding an analogue MTB & I'm the fittest I've ever been . Yes , I still feel young
Wife and I rode from the campground at Bannockburn too - and stopped at that vineyard. Rode to Clyde and back in a day. On acoustic. Cool track, too many rented ebikes with unskilled riders.
I think it would be quite a chill ride on a normal bike. As you say lots of people on rented e bikes with limited bike riding skills. I guess that is what makes it dangerous. Wobble off the edge and you are in trouble.
Great to see a decent video of this, most are bumbling and boring. I rode this solo last November, almost nobody else around. The ride on to Alex is easy and picturesque, worth doing. None of this is challenging, but in winter it could kill you. St John paramedics attend a reasonable number of injuries on the trail. Usually people doing what that guy you picked up did.
For me I can't see any danger as I am 100% confident riding a trail like this. There were a lot of inexperienced riders on rental e bikes and a fall in the wrong place could be very serious especially as access is not easy.
I rode that trail 18 months ago, from Clyde to Bannockburn, a stinking hot day but I had a blast including a totally unexpected ice cold beer at Carrick Vineyard. I was nervous beforehand after watching RUclips videos, but then realised that GoPros use a wide field of view whereas you tend to ride a bit blinkered so the constant drop-offs weren't intimidating at all. I was riding against the flow, but had no problems, and everyone I met was very friendly. Great video Lance, it's brought back great memories.
Glad you liked the video. I found everyone to be very friendly on the trail also. I too enjoyed a cold beer at the winery at the end which finished the day off nicely.
Wow that looks amazing trail I love the view around the mountains etc . Those wooden pathways around the rock face looks really cool I’m probably one of those people that would stop around those trails and take pictures. So definitely looking forward to seeing you both on the next adventure in the South Island 😊❤
I can't decide. I have thought about making a video explaining what I did. Most people think I am a bit of an idiot. Not sure I want to reinforce that opinion.
Forget the "Ebike". Get an "Ibike". " I" stands for I do all the pedalling. I am 70 (retired) and ride a gravel bike and am fitter now than I was in my 60's. I do however own an EMTB but have not taken it out in well over a year. Did 6000 kms on it and got fit. Bought a MTB, did 4000 kms on it and got fitter. Shouted myself a gravel bike when I turned 70 and have now done over 3000 kms on it. Living the dream.
Lovely video, just watch your video ebiking Queens town bike park in the winter. I’m going to the South Island in late June to do a road trip and was looking to do some biking/emtb to fix my addiction😂. Your videos are putting ideas in my head but was wondering if you have any other recommendations as it would be peak winter and I have a feeling it isn’t ideal conditions. Also unfortunately limited to renting the bikes but since this my first time in NZ didn’t want to miss the opportunity. Thanks!
I think you could still have a good time but will need plenty of warm gear. The chairlifts in Queenstown will not be running so e bike hire your best option. We hired e bikes in winter from Torpedo 7. The video I put out last week showed a good ride to do. Bike hire may be reduced as some places change to renting skis instead. Getting a bike to do trails like the Dunstan trail should be no issue and track is all weather. If you can find a bike rental then riding Alexander would be a good option. Good luck.
That is pretty much my thoughts. I wanted a Bosch bike but the Merida was a good price and more importantly an extra small. My wife loves her bike and so far no issues with it.
As you know Lance the video can't show the full beauty of this trail. I did it Christmas 2022 on a non ebike with my son, in the first stages of covid( ended up in hospital😂) but would definitely do it again but on an ebike.
I did the Paparoa trail in February on a pushbike pretty hard going and turned into a bit of disaster when i took a wrong turn and went down the Pike 29 trail. Probably the best flow trail ive ever ridden. ebike would be ideal for the climbing to over 1000m
@@bestdayevermtb2 I did the Paparoa a coupe of weeks ago. Seriously tough. Much harder than Old Ghost Road. I expected vertical metres, I didn't expect the tech.
@bwdown that is why I hadn't planned on doing it. I have since been told by several people that nobody seems to care. Even the park rangers are using e bikes. Don't quote me on it but this is what I have been told.
8:00 what i found with the older people it can be abit strange...sometimes might be pissed off if you help them or exactly what he said "im fine" this older lady was like that in rotorua 🤔🥴
How many cats can you swing in those showers at the BB Camp ground? Pretty awesome eh!🤣🤟 Sic trail, I ride it on my steam bike mate, E-Bike come on its a doddle, Big Wig 29er eats that for breakfast! You think its busy now that trail wait to summer, its a freaking Auckland traffic jam peak hour at Spaghetti Junction! I hope you were nice to Martine @ Camp Boss! (SHES A LEGENED) and who did you get picked up on the shuttle return to CML? I see Hemy at Dunsta Bike Trails picked ya up, another legend and his service is unparalleled he goes above and beyond with a smile, plug plug! seriously never a problem. And did you get a Coffee at the elusive Robs Coffee bus in Alex by Centennial Park, he's only there to 12midday! Some say his coffee is only a myth and he doesn't exist a bit like the the elusive Central Otago Panther that's rumored to have been sited in them thar hills! Also rumored to only attack e-bikers but no one has lived to tell so that's unconfirmed! But legends are built on fact so if ya know ya know! I do want to hear more on the Caravan, brake related? wheel nuts? Forget to put ya bungs in before water crossings? 🤣
you're still a hooligan on a freeride bike...... It's funny, I ride with my young 30 year old cousin, and he has figured out the hard way, not to take my lines (the fun lines)
You owe me a dollar okay. I made a bet that Mrs BDE COULDN'T go past the coffee stop and sure enough she couldn't. Sorry Lance I can't buy it. One breath you are "I'm still young everyones older thn me." Next breath you are Ohhhhhhhhhhh I need a back stretch. Yeah thats getting old.
My brain feels young but my body doesn't. The last time I woke up not sore I was 17. Injured my knee then and have been sore from one thing or another ever since.
Up the breeze!

As several people have pointed out my body is showing signs of age but I refuse to get old mentally. Keep up the riding.
Um...actually you are young.
as an experienced caravanner I am looking forward to see what you have done with yours !
I still have not made that video yet. Not sure I want to.😬
@@bestdayevermtb2 you can't tease us like that Lance. We have to know!
Godzone, we are so lucky to have these trails & there is so many with such fantastic scenery, loving the series, keep it up sir.
I was so lucky with the weather on this trip. My only regret is I missed so many more great locations to ride. Already thinking about next time.
Wow! Coffee on the lake. Good thing you didn't forget the wallet... You have the most beautiful trails. Can't wait to hear the trailer story 😄
Still haven't made that video yet. It is a bit embarrassing 🙄

Wow I can't wait to ride that trail, thanks for sharing, love yr videos so much, you've inspired me to do the motatapu next march!!
The Dunstan trail is pretty cool. It's not technically difficult, but stunning scenery and some cool engineering.
Great vid. Your lovely wife looks as if she could send it.

We certainly stopped plenty to take pictures.
Very nice Vid. It looks so beautifull there in NZ. Cheers mate.
We are very lucky in NZ. Beautiful scenery and lots of riding.
The mystery of the caravan what happened? Where did it happen? Do we really need to know or is it always gonna be a mystery?
I can't decide. I have thought about making a video explaining what I did. Most people think I am a bit of an idiot. Not sure I want to reinforce that opinion.
Did you have little crash?

The ebike is literally the only possibility for many of us older riders. I am in my 80s and continue to ride only because my bike is an ebike.

Great vid. What time of year was it?
I think this would have been March.
I remember walking the original Dunstan trail before the flooded the Clyde dam to make lake Dunstan.
That would certainly have looked different.
How do you rate the merida Lance? Have just brought an e140 for my wife. I'm a bosch fan but the merida was a pretty good price
That is pretty much my thoughts. I wanted a Bosch bike but the Merida was a good price and more importantly an extra small. My wife loves her bike and so far no issues with it.
I’m with you, 64 years young and still sending it, might get a kick stand when I turn 80😅
Ok will do the same.😄

I actually think this would be a good ride on a normal bike. A bit of climbing but mostly flat and flowy.
Give Clutha Gold Cycle Trail a go. Good for you both I reckon.
We did do the start of the Roxburgh Gorge but didn't go past the boat pick up point.
I did the Paparoa trail in February on a pushbike pretty hard going and turned into a bit of disaster when i took a wrong turn and went down the Pike 29 trail. Probably the best flow trail ive ever ridden. ebike would be ideal for the climbing to over 1000m

That have the world’s best venison hamburgers right there mate!
Will have to go back now.😀
Wheres ya fishing rod big man, nah awesome
Must admit never owned a fishing rod. Don't think I have the patience 😄
Great to see some no hi viz or bike stand riders 😊
I'm so young I feel so young, ohh my back is so sore
The thing is my brain thinks it is 25 years old but my body feel 95 😂
Yeah ur still young go hard as u can life’s short

Happy to still be a hooligan😂
What is almost 90% of everyone equates to in percentage? Lol😅
Yes. Still young.
