Hi there! Thanks for sharing a bit of your journey. I’m currently a term 4 student at SGU. I was wondering when you took step1/recommend taking step for someone who is expected be starting clinical in year 3 next next August.
Hello I took step 1 June of 2023 and started clinicals in August 2023. I also had a delay due to retaking BSFCR. If this would have not happened I would have sat for step 1 in March 2023. I believe the latest you could take step 1 to be placed in August would be end of June but would definitely speak with your advisor. It is more so a matter of also making sure you feel comfortable enough to pass it on the first try even if that means delaying (I pushed mine back 3x to ensure I felt ready)
Hello, It is hard to compare the 2 as they really are separate. The first 2 years is a grind and books work. Clinicals are tough because you are juggling studying and working, but for me personally much more rewarding. You truly are implementing what you learn everyday. My motto is medical school only gets harder the longer you are in, and if you work hard and don't let it get the best of you, you will be fine.
@@darrianarch Thank you so much for responding. Are the attendings nice and do they guide you through. I suffer a lot from self doubt and I am planning on attending SGU but dont know if I can handle the rigors of medicine.
@Voldemort318 For the most part everyone I have met has been helpful, they definitely let you learn first before they guide you. I have ran into a handful of not so nice ones but it is to be expected. Going into medicine you have to expect bad days, some bad staff, and to probably get yelled at more often than not. But if you are a hard worker people around you will see that. You don't need to be the smartest just the hardest working and willing to learn!!
@Voldemort318 Most Caribbean students will match into either IM or family medicine. Other specialities are certainly possible but majority will pursue those 2 routes.
All the best Dr. Arch.
how are your teeth so white, where did u go?
