I have trouble with the accents sometimes. "Mocha" sounded like "mocker" and I assumed that was some British slang for making fun of somebody. I got confused when Sam said, "Here's a mocha!" and Alice raged about losing her 'mocker'. 🤔

Certainly, there's nothing to read into here about the fact that, right after they went to the Magnus Archives and accidentally set something free, the next statement that Chester reads is about something terrible being exhumed from a grave. I'm sure it's nothing.

Wanna cross reference the statements? even organise em? Archive them? even?? hmmm??
Remember how Gertrude deliberately made the Archives hard to organize in order to delay the ritual? The Protocols system seems designed to be impossible to collate. I assumed that was sinister at first, a shadowy figure trying to hide behind mysteries, but I'm wondering now if it was a better method for preventing organization.
@@krishadyn5211 Ye, but also it's been getting increasingly more difficult to use the 14 categories to define these statements and avatars. Tma had fears overlap before but within any given thing it was 2, maybe 3 fears at most with one usually taking more of the front ...this time around it's much more hectic
Honestly, my running theory currently is that rituals havent even been invented in this universe. The OIAR too seems to be feeding all of them equally! Keeping the forces content and controlled. Tma's rivalry seems to be completely missing thus far
Dafuck happens with Celia at the beginning? Why does it sound like she just woke up on a random highway, and why does she imply it's not THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED? Is she doing research on time travel, other dimensions and teleportation because she randomnly TELEPORTS AROUND??

I'm fairly certain it's not the Eye? At least I think that's what you meant? The recorders worked in the blind spots of the eye in the magnus archives, and the way Annabelle talked about the recorders it sounded like the web wasn't in control of them either. (Which yeah, I know, she could be lying, but what did she have to gain from that? A couple more tapes? She clearly seemed to think she had enough by the time she took Martin, so then why would there be any more recordings after that point? And after the fears had gone?)
Honestly I have no idea but I'm absolutely in love with the way these guys make the Doylist explanation fit within the Watsonian
@@Evergreen_Trees_are_coolI think the tapes are from the Web but only 80% while being 20% of the eye. Do note that the very feature of the web is that it has plans withing plans within plans and so far out and complex that even the Avatars of that Fear are unable to understand them.
@@sumitrana2420 The reason is that the Web is sentient, unlike the rest of the fears. So its Avatars are puppets too.
I hope the tape recorders are more than the Web's shenanigans. That plot seemed done, Annabelle got her Archivist web of tapes. But someone said the tape recorders seemed to be more sentient? I assumed that was the Web. It would be nice if its not, if the tape recorders are separate, maybe not from the Web but as their own avatars of such.

During the first few episodes I assumed Gwen knew a lot about what's going on but she seems a lot more in the dark about all this than I assumed :')

11:08 Sutherland Macdonald was a prominent English tattoo artist in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Given Magnus's track record of incorporating historical events and figures into the plot, I think it's likely that this is the original identity of Ink5oul.
Oh that's very interesting. The guy who came to see the ship tattoo is definitely ink5oul since they were described to have a big serpent tattoo. And they seem a big fan of whoever did this piece
“The Deep” sounds so much like an entity name
I always thought that the fear of depths was somewhat overlooked in the original, split between the buried and the vast. It would be nice to get a new entity centred around it.
@@evanholt1752 well Jon did say it wasnt as simple as dividing them up that way, and there are things in the grey area between the "fears". I would also add that i feel "the deep" has some part lonely to it
I feel like they would be based mostly around new phobias (needles, thalassophobia, the masklophobia, etc...) that we haven't seen much in TMA
Also feels like it overlaps with the Dark and the End. During the eyepocalypse there was a lake domain that was basically that.

@@thedistinguished5255 There's a few throughout the ep, but a pretty clear one is when Sam tricks Alice about the pastry at 3:30! He choose cinnamon swirl and there's a sharp noise (likely from Freddy, indicating he's lying). Alice then gives him pan au chocolat and then realizes Sam wanted that one in the first place. It's probably easier to notice them with headphones!
It’d be incredibly ironic if Alice was marked by the eye despite desperately trying to keep her head down. Like, the Dark would make sense but the irony of the Eye is just too interesting imo
Eh... she's not yet Avatar material. She's marked and thus she FEARS being watched, being followed, and singled out.

And then think about how he's trying to find the connection between cases, the thorough paperwork with all boxes and backgrounds checked, the investigations to find more information

They’re using monsters as hitmen! Yeah we’ve pole vaulted past the “Are we the baddies” stage and right into “How deep does this rabbit hole go?”
Someone realized they couldn't get rid of the Fears and they'd keep creating monsters, so they decided to try to control the situation by feeding them/using them. Old govt trick, back to when you bribed the local pirates.
Ink5oul from episode 2 was described as having a large floral serpent tattoo. So it does seem like the guy who came to look at the body with the ship tattoo is our paranormal tattoo artist buddy ink5oul.

looking up Sutherland MacDonald, they were a really big tattoo artist a few hundred years back. I wonder if this might be like an Edmund Halley situation where they'll be a stand-out avatar from history

Theory time; I think Sam will be an avatar of the Web. Stuff like tricking Alice into giving him the pastry he wanted seems cute and all but it shows someone who knows how to pull strings and understand how the minds of his friend works. He feels he’s missing out on not being accepted by the program he went through as a kid; what if he finds completion as a willing avatar of some kind

@@dudeno5042 that’s the vibe I’m getting for this universe, the ARG leans more into it but we heard Gerry and Sam talk about a program they did as kids it sounded like they were testing them, seeing if they were compatible. But there’s still a lot we don’t know so far, the Fears/Avatars may not even work the same way in this world

In Archives, we're told that the only reason the the Entities split into the 14 is because Robert Smirked categorized them and then his list became the accepted norm.
If the entities are understood in a way that separates them, then they separate.
OAIR's marking systems give thousands upon thousands upon thousands of minute ways to categorize the supernatural occurrences.
I strongly believe that the concept of Smirke's 14 is completely absent from Protocol, and is instead replaced by thousands of hyper specific ones. As a side effect of this, Protocol statements are prone to "bleed through" between multiple of what we understand as Smirke's 14. Like how Putting Down Roots has aspects of the Flesh, Corruption, and Lonely

If we subscribe to the highly likely theory that this is the dimensions the entities got sucked into post MAG 200, and with OAIR being a government agency, the creation of OAIR may've been in response to occurrences tied to fears emerging.
Maybe it's purpose is to spread the entities's powers thin by segmenting them as many times as they can.
I mean, if you were a cosmic unknowable entity that had to feed on a very, VERY particular kind of heebie jeebie, then you'd probably spend all your time tryna find that rather than tryna get people to do world ending rituals
1downside side effect of wholeheartedly believe this theory is that now I get peeved when I see folks attempting to categorize Protocol statements into Smirke's 14, because it just....doesn't fit neatly. Yeah some have pretty clear cut ones (Slaughter Violin statement was great), but again, there's too much "bleed through". Too many loose strings that'd be real bad to tug on
Alice did say the system is specifically made so cases can't be connected and are all standalone, so yeah that does seem very possible
I'm not saying you're wrong, but it the marking system seems more like putting up a genus and family for an unidentified species as opposed to Smirke's, which is outright naming the Fear for what it is.
Putting Down Roots is the Corruption, for me, which preys upon the lonely as well as The Lonely itself, specifically the ones that yearn to *not* be alone and find a sense of belonging. Smirke's categorization had 'bleeds' too, after all. My own personal theory, for example, is that The Extinction was originally part of The End until it got enough definition behind it to become its own individual Fear.
But that's just me. Maybe I'm wrong and Protocol is embracing the Fear-Animal Kingdom...which I'll admit is an interesting idea.

@@krishadyn5211 Yeah but Elias og and Magnus as Elias are strongly implied to act very differently if I remember correctly, and While I dont remember og Elias super well from the like one thing we hear from him, Lina has the same cadence, as, and similar word choice to, Jonah Magnus as Elias.

The buried had connotations of drowning and is also a contender for influencing the deep. The cemetery angle reinforces this association.
Anyone notice that at 16:05 the computer makes a sound when Alice 'changes her mind' about being forthcoming with sam about the filing system
Somebody else noticed that Fr3d1 makes a little zip sound when Sam says he wants the cinnamon swirl becausee Sam was lying, and that that sound happens everytime someone lies. I'm going to have to go back and listen for myself in the other episodes but I think they're right
The real horror is realizing the episode is over and you need more
Sam and Alice are too cute and sweet to each other...
One of them is dying or horribly traumatized by the end of the season...
Also, wonder if the thing from 10 that's following Alice now is just an Old Archivist. One of the weird things that gathered at the base of the Panopticon?
It upset me that we didn't get much of them except secondhand. But the sound reminded me of a different monster so I'm not holding out hopes.

An interesting statement! Great to hear about Ink5oul again, for one, and for another, I’m getting big Vast vibes from the rest of it! A ship on the vast ocean, something horrible and unknowable in the depths, lots of mentions of “The Deep”, etc.
I’m a big fan of The Vast, so this made me really happy! 😁
I still feel like I need to analyze it a bit more, though, to figure out what happened. The medical examiner died, somehow, and is “with the sea, now.” My guess is that his close work with the sea tattooed body either mentally affected him, causing him to throw himself into the sea; or the tattoo physically did something supernatural to him, and his body was later found in the sea.
This makes me wonder why Ink5oul took the body. Was it for noble or nefarious reasons? Was it to prevent anyone else from being killed by the tattoo? Or was it to take it for themself, to use its power for their own purposes?
I also feel like there might be a hint of the hunt. With the shape in the water that's chasing the boat. And with how obsessed they seemed to figure out what the shape is

Okay! Lots to unpack here!
1. Celia is sleepwalking? Often enough that she sleeps with a phone in her pocket? Yikes! Also, who’s the Jack she mentioned, I wonder? (Another interesting note: whoever/whatever is listening was able to tap into Celia’s phone, remotely, even though she said her phone had no signal. Very interesting… 🤔)
2. “At least it wasn’t both legs” and “who needs grandparents anyway”. Interesting backstory tidbits there. Did Sam severely injure his leg at some point? I don’t think that would be from the Magnus Institute search, since Sam and Alice walked away at the end of that, without issue, so it makes me wonder.
3. Alice is feeling watched and having nightmares after the trip to the Magnus Institute?! I am _concerned!!!_ 😰
4. INK5OUL!!! Great to hear about you again! Interesting that they apparently didn’t do the ship tattoo themself, but instead it was done by “Oscar Jarrett”? I’m curious what their interest in the body/tattoo was, or why they took the body… if Ink5oul is indeed a Flesh avatar, as some people suspect, it doesn’t bode well if they’re body snatching.
5. Mr. Bonzo is only one of the “externals”?! Does the OIAR work with/command various avatars or monsters?! Are they all hitmen, or are there various tasks they’re sent out to do? (I’m morbidly curious about who Mr. Bonzo was sent after, and what he’ll do to them.)

I KNEW I wasn't hearing things wrong! The script doesn't mention the sounds, so I thought I was reading too much into it, but I think you're right. Freddie has GOT to be somewhere in the watcher-territory, right? And they hate lies, it'd make sense for it to be a bit huffy or act up
I marathoned Archives and Protocol over a few weeks and I don't think I've been this excited for a new episode since I was a kid. I'm in love with this show!

3:36 the cinnamon swirl choice was a lie; and there is a barely audible chirp in the background to indicate it
4:37 "it's nothing"... and there is that chirp in the background noise. SomeTHING definitely knows when people around are lying - it's the same noise when Gwen lied in a previous episode.

@@huntercharleston5812 Its funny, Alice is so demonically hateful but Gwen's moment of genuinely being touched--especially when she was feeling so traumatized--was so strong even Alice didn't feel like being cruel.

So it seems the fears ARE overlapping based on desire, but some cant agree with each other and fight... we have the buried, the vast, the spiral, maybe even the lonely or dark... but even with their overlap they fight. So, tatoos may be a recurring theme, and they don't see to be tied to an entity, so perhaps they're more like the concept of books. The case itself, beyond the tatoo, seemed tied to The Buried, but the monster in the water gave big Vast vibes--two of the fears that previously were pretty much diametrically opposed. Also 'The Deep' was used a couple of times. May be worth considering it's a new designation.
I won't even try to theorize on Celia. We don't know enough yet.
Makes sense since they have been mentioning tattoos, marks, and symbols in every episode so far. Instead of curse books there are cursed Marks/ tats instead
maybe this tattoo is the new lightner books for this series. after all weren't some of the lighter books bound using human skin.

Alright I've been thinking. I've been seeing people point out that Protocol handles fears differently than Archives does. What I'm thinking is the key difference between Archives and Protocol is that The Magnus Archives revolves around esoteric nature. I think The Magnus Protocol revolves around human nature. Fr3d1 lets us know when people are lying, both this episode and the other tattoo episode revolves around obssession, that dice episode was mainly about addiction and revenge, just for examples. The esoteric and human inhibition are both key elements to both shows but I think they weigh out differently from one another

They both are so close to The Horrors, and like at this point everyone pretty much is from the team but Gwen is actively meeting externals and getting (unhelpful) information from Lena, witch also reminds me of how jon was getting into The Horrors more and Elias was giving him very unhelpful information specifically in s3!!!!!
2. The way Gwen goes in and is super tired and exhausted at first and like has that moment of sounding so genuine where she gets the coffee from Alice, like shes behaving the way she feels, but when Celia comes in and theres a Business Situation she completely changes!!! She like goes into business mode with the way she talks and what she says/does ect!! using it as sort of a shield!!! LIKE JON ARCHIVIST SIMS!!!
3. Sorta mentioned this but yk both talking and "working close" with the big bosses (Lena and Elias)
and 4. They both ask questions that are like not that important? at a given time!! (i.e. "Can he read???" from gwen and "You dont sound? Russian??" and "What is your real voice" from Jon)
OH and also being told "Get some sleep you look dreadful" !!
