The second lecture of Professor Steve Jones on this channel - and both are on my bookmarked list of the very best lectures. May I ask for 10-20 more from this man? ;-)
You're in luck Michael, we'll be welcoming Professor Jones back for another lecture this year. We'll be filming on the 19th Feb 2013. The lecture is titled 'Snails in Art and the Art of Snails'.
I will have to watch more lectures by Professor Jones, since it was captivating; yet, I felt a little hurting and sad when he talked about dogs like that. I'm thankful to Gresham College for all the uploads.
We are a nasty destructive filthy and spiteful little animal, totally consumed with how clever we think we are. In fact we are so self consumed by how wonderful we are that we are sleepwalking into oblivion. We crap on about `saving the planet`. The planet does not need saving, its we that need saving. The planet can look after itself and will do. Just because we havent, yet, come across anything that by `our lofty standards`, is smarter than us doesnt mean there is nothing out there.
We're also too quick to criticize, usually without offering any real solutions or help. And we tend to get angry and hateful when conveying a simple point, for basically no reason.
I'm just sorry that I only came to this video and this man now. I feel terribly sad that it wasn't sooner. For the first time I have understood an entire dialogue... I should add that I consider myself of low intelligence but, even so, I understood. I can only say, what a teacher he is and that I have learned many things today.
The way you formulate and the things you say , dear Heron's War , by no means give *me* the impression that you'd be of low intelligence . Socrates supposedly once said : "The more i learn , the more i realise that i know very little" . Conclusion : i consider you a wise person .
The body design features of humans and chimps are similar, but this just shows common design, not common ancestry. Sorry but I've been subject to Darwinian rhetoric all my life and yet I don't find it convincing.
Hi Sean. I am Paul here in the UK. I read your comment with regard to this video with a "I feel sorry for him" kind of feeling. I honestly do not wish to offend you in anyway, but since viewing this video and making your comment (over a year ago), I sincerely hope that you taken time to really educate in the beauty of Evolution. It is more mind-blowing in reality than any verse, scripture or dogma can ever convey. It is simply beautiful regarding the evolution of all life on this wonderful planet we call Earth.
It's a pity you have been subject to only rhetoric about evolution. Try some science about evolution, and I'm sure you will be convinced if you really appply yourself to understanding it.
No they eat a kind of bread, fermented food (fish) and boiled food. Their diet if composed of more raw food (fish/meat) than that of the average occidental though.
Lol 6 months dead on raw? I personally know dozens of people who are thriving on a raw diet and have been for many years. Not my personal choice, but definitely not lethal :D
37:50 brain is expensive. For language. 43:05 “genetics is a language. Evolution is the grammar of that language” wow. 43:42 fly antenna function gene fox p2 46:50 language and art are in many ways like genetics because they pass on information and change the way we think. 48:50 language as evolutoin
Man has a dual nature: "In his material aspect he expresses untruth, cruelty and injustice; all these are the outcome of his lower nature. The attributes of his Divine nature are shown forth in love, mercy, kindness, truth and justice, one and all being expressions of his higher nature." ~ Baha'i Faith
Fine humorous talk... Seems man's a 3 fold composite: animal (physical), human (mental) angel (spiritual). "The human body is like animals subject to nature's laws. But man is endowed with a second reality, the rational or intellectual reality; and the intellectual reality of man predominates over nature. Yet there is a third reality in man, the spiritual reality." - `Abdu'l-Bahá
You can live on 100% raw food only with a carefully balanced diet. If not, you are in a great danger of having deficiencies. "raw food" has been in fashion since a few years now and what I see on the internet are either a lot of disapointed people, some testimonies of people getting ill and a lot of ads for "miracle cures" or "secrets of well being". Very few happy people. Most (all?) positive testimonies that I saw are from people eating more raw food, but not 100% raw food.
A college professor, with a straight face, told these students that farming began in the Middle East/Anatolia, 10K year’s ago. Wow, just wow. He just skipped Egypt, which is located in Africa. Both language & farmer began in Africa, & many other things that are in use to today.
We're Animal & Angel... "We must therefore labour to destroy the animal condition, till the meaning of humanity cometh to light." ~ Baha'u'llah, Baha'i Faith
Darwin was not a atheist in fact he was annoyed by those who tried to claim he was,in fact toward the end of his life he considered himself a agnostic.
Thank you for a very interesting and informative presentation on the progress of humanity and comparison with other forms of creation. When we investigate this in detail we find we were barbaric through all known records - survivors - adaptable - had intelligence enough to learn to our advantage - the ability to breed rapidly - overcome obstacles - and progress to what we see as modern fair and advanced civilisation in today's world.????
You can't know what a language was like if there are neither recordings of it being spoken or writing. PIE is simply a speculation and shouldn't be seen as anything more.
It is much more than a mere speculation. PIE has been reconstructed applying the comparative method which has been proven right with the existing langages we have. Of course you can never be sure about what it was like that without recodings or writings, but what we have is a good inferrence, one which will never be tested, but not a mere speculation.
Evolution, an evidence, for sure. Darwinism, as a theory: something much less evident. Mutations do add complexity and diversity over time, but how it comes that they are so, how to put that, "solid" in what they produce? Chance and utility do not explain all of this beautiful architecture. Even less when it comes to proper human realities, like language and culture.

Excellent talk by Steve Jones,
This lecture alone justifies the Internet. Thanks to all those responsible for sharing it.
What an excellent, well-presented, informative and interesting lecture.
thanks for the upload. the talk was quite insightful.

I absolutely agree with that statement. (sorry it's taken 10 months or so, but I have only just come across this series of videos on YT)
I doubt Prof. Jones would disagree - but you seem to be rather on the wrong tack.
I'm just sorry that I only came to this video and this man now. I feel terribly sad that it wasn't sooner. For the first time I have understood an entire dialogue... I just want to add how much I enjoy his humour.

Short answer: Yes.
Very fascinating. Thanks!
Humans are the another animal no doubt what so ever .

Yes, it is so obvious
William Jones went as a Judge not as a trader to India In Brtish class Society traders were lower in hierarchy
do natives of cold climates (inuit/eskimo) not live on raw meat? maybe im wrong here....
No they eat a kind of bread, fermented food (fish) and boiled food. Their diet if composed of more raw food (fish/meat) than that of the average occidental though.
CyrilleParis, “a kind of bread” made of what?
Lol 6 months dead on raw? I personally know dozens of people who are thriving on a raw diet and have been for many years. Not my personal choice, but definitely not lethal :D
Superb!.
16:53 genes are language (to what is god?)

Gareth Bale proves that evolution theory is correct.

cant live on raw foods??? thats incorrect.

Not true.

speed the video up a bit and listening to him is a bit less of an agony-try 1.25
Yes. Now, let's move to more interesting question.
You can't know what a language was like if there are neither recordings of it being spoken or writing. PIE is simply a speculation and shouldn't be seen as anything more.

Ah, the simple mind.
it all sounds so woke, why o why
lame. think about were we are going not were we have been.
Evolution, an evidence, for sure. Darwinism, as a theory: something much less evident. it's not chance...
and yes it is explaining art and language.....but it dosen't explain why are you making this " reality " argument
