Nice job. The builder did a nice job too. After setup on four ukuleles or guitars I agree in its very time consuming. But, having a nice low action is worth it's weight in gold and I am glad I did all four. Two I built the others were a Seagull and Kala. I discovered manufacturers set the action high and being a beginner at playing a very low action is so much easier to finger and Barre chords.
Get yourself a string spacing rule Caleb it's a vital tool if your making your own nuts. Stewmac might do them but I'd recommend buying the crimson guitars one from the uk as it has a zero so much easier to use and they are only £20 so cheap and will last you a lifetime and having perfect spacing on your nuts will make your setups better and happier customers!
Nice vid dude, just found your channel, was wondering what you were doing after you left Rosa. I like my action at a medium height so can play licks and solos and also have a good strum.
Put a capo on the third fret. File the nut slot so the string has the desired clearance above the first fret. You can figure out the clearance that works best for you and or the owner. It doesn’t need much. This completely eliminates the saddle height problem because the string is sitting on the second fret and the nut not the saddle and the nut. No matter what you end up with for saddle height the nut clearance will never be too low or too high.
Caleb, very nice, Iam sure you probably checked the levelness of the fretboard before you started messing with the action, a notched straightedge & a good flat straightedge is a must the neck relief is pretty important I usually jot down all those #s first before I start messing with anything, it’s a good habit to get into. Great job as usual. I wish you great success with your business 👍🙏🇺🇸🎸🎼🎹👨🏻🦯👨🏻🦯
Nice job Caleb! Was wondering if you ever just use a small file to spot level a single high fret? Seems like that one high fret end would have been a great candidate rather than leveling out the whole area and loosing fret height. Just a thought, take care!
I've been so far behind on customer projects personal projects are falling further behind 🙃 Hopefully I'll get to is soon, I could definitely use getting rid of it

They have to be told to keep your comments respectful, people are too sensitive, the kid knows what he is doing, I work on my own guitars and basses, I am not that experienced with acoustics and I would say that working on acoustic guitars is a little harder, but sometimes I wonder why he does some of the way he goes about doing things, I would not say the guitar is ugly but it definitely is a is a little busy for my taste, but it's not my guitar. I will be honest I sometimes put on Celeb's show to fall a sleep, I am more of a Dave's world of fun stuff or what the name of his show, I have gotten some good tips from him and he is more entertaining but to each there own. I just caught that why use a pick use a feeler gauge.
When making the nut, why don't you project the fret plane to the nut with a half pencil, sand it close the that, THEN cut your slots?? You waste a whole lot of time cutting the slots in a high blank. With that method, I can get the slots within .02"/.03" high, the first shot, and the slots are at the proper depth. Then I check the nut action when the strings are on and sand the bottom of the nut. I set the nut action by checking the gap at the first fret with the string pressed at the 3rd fret, the crazy high action has nothing to do with it.
I do the same myself with the half pencil and get myself just shy of the line and then work out my slots and cut shallow slots first. But I think it's just the way Jerry taught him because its harder to mess up doing it this way but takes way longer! Then I shape my nut and polish the bone also after the final setup of first fret action.
@@stu-j It's actually easier to mess up doing it the way it was done as there is much more chance of the file wandering off line. Have a look at the string spacing at 32.16. This kid needs a bit more constructive criticism instead of the regular chorus of "oohs" and "aahs" that seem to be posted regardless of work quality.
T@@brettwilloughby2981 I agree but he's only doing what he was taught and I've criticised his teaching and skill level for a long time so I don't blame the kid 100%. I wouldn't let him touch my guitars but I wouldn't let Jerry also as I think he's worse. Caleb will get better but my advice would be find another teacher so he can up his skill level.
@@stu-j You've hit the nail on the head there mate! Bad habits taught from day one. The fanboys would be well served watching Ted Woodford's channel. They'll soon see a true professional with an eye for detail that actually knows what he is doing. The differences are like chalk and cheese.
@@brettwilloughby2981 Ted is fantastic but that skill level takes years of practice and I'm sure lots of mess ups along the way. The Internet is a strange place and I watch Jerry most of the time cringing at what he does to people's instruments and actually documents it on video. He's a skillful builder ill give him that but as a repair person he's not very good at all! That poor Gibson acoustic was awful that he re finished and I had comments removed that didn't criticise just giving an opinion on how something might work better. I've been repairing guitars for over 25 years and I don't even come close to Ted's skills but I'm more a setup man now and only do big repairs now and then. My advice to Caleb is to find another good Luther and even work for free a couple of days a week to get more experienced and he will be a good Luther in the end.
Why didn’t you check the neck angle to the bridge first? Spacing has nothing to do with the action height. Did you measure the height of the previous nut at the first fret? Guitars have specs for spacing, it seems that your half assing and guessing at things. Watch more RUclips videos and acquire the knowledge you need to work on guitars. Guessing as you go, makes for poor repairs and unhappy customers! Comments saying great job don’t have a clue what’s going on. Sorry.
I'm sorry that it was obvious the saddle height was the problem, and I saw no reason to discuss the neck angle. The neck angle is fine, it was checked when the customer dropped off the instrument. You're right spacing does have noting to do with string height, heaven forbid more than one thing can be wrong with a setup. I'm sure there are standards for spacing on standard nut widths, unfortunately there are not standards for custom built one off instruments. I'd hardly call measuring to the thousandth of an inch guessing. Thanks for watching
Guitar seems to be well built. Sounds great. I have one negative thing to say about it, It's ugly, and I do not like the finish. The rosette is horrible. Otherwise great guitar.

Did you check the intonation ? If you did i missed it
Is it from a kit or made from scratch? Good setup as usual Caleb
Excellent content Caleb. Nice sounding guitar. Thanks

Nice guitar. Good work. Lotsa good info, IMO.
When changing strings, just push down on the string and pull out the pin with your fingers. Cheers
