If Im not mistaken, they shoot dye into the mussel and it automatically builds the pearl to enclose the foreign dye color and make the mussel grow to make a protective area so that it does not become irritated or infected from the dye or any foreign object or matter.

Look tell the truth take us on a walk show us the different kind of clams, oysters, crawfish things you find near your home dont lie. Surface clams the pearls are mostly light pastel colors you have to go deep to get the richer tones i do believe. I have acwhite off white, peach, and a pink but like i said they are light colors, My brother brings one from his fishing trips if they find one and thats off shore fishing, diving, netting for shrimp all came from OBX

The dull brown is most likely because the water has drained through peat bogs, and the minerals have stained it. The other colours, I don't have a clue I'm afraid.
