  • The United Nations biodiversity summit in Montreal is seeking a new agreement to protect endangered plants and animals.
It comes as researchers warn of the threat to polar bears in the Canadian arctic, where dwindling sea ice is putting their survival at risk.
The bears hunt and fish in Hudson Bay around the town of Churchill.
Mishal Husain presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Victoria Gill.

They have heaps of really interesting adaptations to the cold. For example, their black skin helps keep them warm. And their hairs are hollow inside to trap air and insulate them. Sometimes you get polar-grizzly hybrids and their traits are in-between (e.g. some of them have hollows in their hairs but they are smaller or shaped differently). They expect polar-grizzly hybrids are becoming more common as brown/grizzly bears expand their range north due to warming temperatures and polar bears begin to venture to new areas in search of food. In fact the two bear species only diverged a few hundred thousand years ago so they have been interbreeding here and there for their entire evolutionary history and share a lot of DNA.

@@JamesSmith-qs4hx Yes, I think it would be bad for the brown bears. The brown* bears would die probably as they can't survive in the harshest arctic conditions nor can they hunt on sea ice. But probably in the long term I suppose it wouldn't have a massive impact on the polar bears or the rest of the northernmost arctic as the brown/grizzlies would die so quickly.
But in any case brown (grizzly*) bears' range already overlaps with the much of the range of polar bears. They can be found in the subarctic and lower latitudes of the Arctic. They don't stay in the more northern parts over winter though since they can't hunt on the sea ice and are not so well adapted for the cold.

@@JamesSmith-qs4hx No, it does not say a pollutant is a substance essential for life. Do you have the intellectual courage to look up what the word pollution means?
Let me give you an example that is not CO2:
Nitrates are common components of fertilizers. They are essential to multicelular life on earth. Plants can't grow without nitrogen in the soils.
Yet, if you put to much of it in the soils it burns plants roots and kills wildlife. Suddenly the same substances that are not only "natural"but vital for life become toxic due to the excessive quantities.
Because that is what a pollutant is: A pollutant is a substance that is present in concentrations that may harm organisms (humans, plants and animals) or exceed an environmental quality standard. The term is frequently used synonymously with contaminant.
So anything can be a pollutant in the right circumstances. I understood that when i was 13 yo. But apparently there are a lot of adults who can't grasp simple highschool science concepts.

Propaganda. As regards the melting of Arctic Ice, the records nearly always seem to start in 1979. Strange that, considering it was a year of record extent for Arctic Ice. Even so, data from NOAA (2022) show winter (March) ice coverage has hardly changed since '79, and that the summer (September) coverage trend had stopped declining since 2007. How inconvenient! Didn't someone predict in 2007 Arctic ice free by 2010, or 2015, or 2013, or in 5 years? Or was it in 2008 the Arctic ice sheet would melt away. Also predicted in 2008 North Pole ice free in ... 2008 ... or in 10 years. 2009 prediction: Arctic ice free in 2014. 2012 prediction: snow will be gone by 2020. And 2013 star prediction: Methane catastrophe in 2 years because of ice free Arctic. 2018 prediction: zero chance of permanent ice in Arctic by 2022. It's still there, and it's stopped shrinking.
If you consider global sea ice cover, it was basically flat from 1981 to 2008, rose until 2010, stayed level until 2015, dropped until 2018, and then rebounded almost all the way back to the 1990-2000 average. Nobody predicted theses changes, nor can they explain them. The changes have no relationship to the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere.
    The climate crisis/emergency/apocalypse is make-believe.

What is your work on a day to day basis, what about hour to hour? and where do you get your salary from? The government? Thus the people? Why don't you change profession and start working for sustainable companies instead to do practical work? No need to spend more than the time you already spent measuring it, you have the results, move on

Suggestion I know it and I might not be a good one. But I know that it would work. Why couldn't you make docs for them to hunt off of so the seals can get on there and all the sea creatures can feel comfortable on these huge platforms or docs man-made you can paint them white or the wood could be white it's not wood use so that wood plastic so it doesn't rot or whatever you know if you make a huge dock they could have a chance to eat something at least. It's not very big but it's enough if you make a whole bunch spread out everywhere. Make sure to paint them white or the material that you use is white. So it can reflect the sun.

I've been suggesting that for the last 5 years.... Making large floating docks that are anchored in the ARTIC circle where the ice used to be also gives the seals a place to haul out for rest.. If we don't start protecting our world's Natural wild life ... Soon there will be nothing to save.. What a Sad day that will be...
We need to stop hunting whales as they are another carbon sink helping remove parts of what's causing our climate changes around the globe.. Your not doing scientific research harvesting a whole whale when a small tissue sample is all you need for your tests.. Japan.. And your school children don't want to eat WGAT ever it is your calling the whale meat to try to fool the kids .. They know the truth too.
