Hi Everyone. I hope you have had a good week. Don't forget to subscribe as next week its a look into my night time routine. Do you have any questions? Or anything I should include in it? Gem
There's something that I thought was FANTASTIC ABOUT THIS is that you shared so many easy and relatively INEXPENSIVE tips in this. So refreshing as the minute we talk about accessibility and disability aids extra zeros... A LOT of extra zeros are added on the end so this was fantastic! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'll be using some of your ideas and showing them to any of my friends too. I can see how much effort and editing would have gone into this video
I loved this!! So down to earth and really informative! Yours and your husbands relationship seems amazing too because he’s clearly so supportive of you - helping you film and you just being so relaxed and funny around him. Just lovely!
Your husband is so supporting and funny! Your dog made my day just hopping on the trampoline! Thank you so much for Taking time out of your life to make amazing videos for us that we all appreciate so much!
Seeing your video is just how i have to do all those thins you do. I am only tiny so everything is out of my reach. I am lucky enough to have a electric wheelchair for downstairs and an ordinary one upstairs. I really need one that rises up so I can get to worktops and make a cup of tea. I find life a struggle but you have it so under control. Stay safe lov xxxx
This is my first video i have watched of yours and its very interesting perspective. Not only as to see how your house is accessible but also since its a European house and i have never seen one before. I had three strokes and had to get several spinal taps which has messed up my back quite a bit. One of those beds would be amazing. I also love the openness but coziness of your house!
I slept in an adjustable bed that was my friends grandmother's. Even able bodied it is so nice to change the position and put head and knees up. Everyone should know the joy!
Y’know, I gotta thank you. Earlier this year I was given my first wheelchair and I have been having trouble adjusting, but seeing this just makes me feel better knowing people are willing to change things for you :)
Thanks for this video post! And thanks for letting the dog provide some comic relief on the trampoline. I really like your upbeat attitude. I try to be upbeat too. I have a number of health issues, including 2 bad knees and scoliosis in my back. Some years ago I had to start using a couple of canes when I reached the point of grabbing onto walls, counters, and tables when maneuvering around my home. Almost 4 years ago I was able to move from that home into a handicap accessible apartment. It has no stairs, a large step-in shower, grab bars in the shower and by the toilet, and room under the sinks to pull up a wheelchair or, in my case, a wheeled office chair. Some years before I moved here the owners renovated the complex. The halls in the handicapped apartments are a big space in the center of the apartment. Because of this the owners even had these halls set up with more outlets, a phone jack, and a cable port for a TV or computer. That's where I set up my home office. The doorway from the hall to the living room was just an open archway when I moved in, but I had a relative set up a shower curtain on a shower rod in the doorway. I made sure to pick one with a picture on it that doesn't look like it belongs in a bathroom. It allows for some privacy from the living room windows, and also let's me have a different temperature in the hall than is in the kitchen and living room. The flip down shower seat isn't comfortable, so I use it to hold my shower stuff, and I sit in the tub chair that I brought with me when I moved in. The shower controls in the shower are set up to be used by disabled people, so most of my time in there is spent sitting down. A while after moving here I upgraded from 2 canes to a nice rolling walker, which is more helpful than the canes. In tight spaces the canes are still useful, but the rest of the time I use the rolling walker, as it's more comfortable to walk with it. Like most other rolling walker models, mine has a fold down seat with storage underneath. Having a seat when you need it is a big help. Had to go vote recently, and I was able to use my rolling walker on their ramp both going and coming back. Got there about 11am, and the line was already a little way out of the entry door. Everytime the line stopped moving I was able to sit and rest on my walker seat. I really needed that seat feature that day, and I'm so glad that I have such a useful mobility aid. I'd prefer to be in perfect health, so that I wouldn't need such help, but the reality is that I, and many other people, including you, aren't in mint condition, and do need mobility aids. Canes, walkers, mobility scooters, and wheelchairs are a great help to those of us who need them. Anyway, thanks again for your video. I'm sure the methods you are using to make your life more ergonomic will help lots of people. Keeping the dishware in the lower cabinets is an idea that will help me. I've been keeping most of my dishware on my very long kitchen counter, so that I can reach them while sitting down. This does crowd the counter though. Anything still left in the overhead cupboards I usually only get down when I am coming into or leaving the kitchen, as I am standing then, and can hold onto my walker if I need to. Thanks for your tips. Now I'm going to add rearranging the lower cabinets to my chore list, so that I can put at least some of the dishware down there. Keep making these videos. They are helping people. 🤗
Love your helpful video! I had a spinal fusion 3 yrs ago and cannot bend or twist and walk with a cane and walker. I use my grabber (claw) a lot. I have one in my car and two in my home. Love the idea of a laundry bag in the dirty clothes hamper! Yes, baskets are especially helpful!
I recently been put in a wheelchair due to an accident. I would like to know some specifics: 1. How do you carry things? For example, the laundry bag - how do you transfer it from downstairs to the actual washing machine? But also in general, 2 hands are needed to move the chair, I find it almost impossible to carry anything with me! 2. How do you get ready before and after a shower? How do you take several items with you (clothes, a hair brush, deodorant, cotton tips etc) from where they are? 3. How far can you roll with the chair outside before you get tired? I am young and (relatively) healthy and need to rest every 15 meters or so. 4. The baskets are a great idea! Do you put them in your lap when moving around the house? 5. How do prepare a cup of tea / coffee and transfer is anywhere from the kitchen counter? 6. Do you do the dishes? Chores around the house? I have to say that I've been in a state if depression (and admit that I may have been a lilte grumpy and frustrated) for the past month ever since I'm in the chair, and seeing you and your positive energy is really helping me to get out of the self pity mode and to try and adopt a new perspective on things, one step at a time (haha no pun intended) Thanks for this video!
TheSummerOf86, first of all I want to empathize with you about your sudden life change. I will say I am able bodied and up until recently volunteered in the rehabilitation centre affiliated with the major hospital in my city. I only left there because the program I was involved in was temporarily closed, I am still with the main hospital though. You underwent a major life change - not just physically, but, mentally as well. It also didn’t happen in a way you had time to get used to. Understandably, you will be depressed, you will also mourn the passing of the life you had, just know that while your new life will be different, the journey through it will be tough going at times and laughter filled, loving most timesin fact I can see your emotions jumping all over the place for a while. You have so much you are going to have to learn, some of which maybe most was already second nature. But you are strong, you have this. You know how I know without knowing you personally, because, you survived the initial accident and I’m sure that wasn’t easy. You have the support of the hospital, your family, your friends and just as importantly your fellow patients, some of whom may develop into deep friendships. Do not push them away, they are invaluable at this time in your life. You will learn the answers to all your questions over time with help from your team that will include your doctors, nurses, occupational therapist, physical therapist, social workers, psychologist or psychiatrist and when you are fully released you will probably need some home care. All of the people I just listed will have your back. When you have had a chance to catch your breath, get used to your new situation and learn all the things you have to, you will start to look into what is available for you depending on your interests and remaining abilities. For instance there are hand peddled trikes or bikes with lower centres of gravity, sledge hockey for both guys and gals and other things. I would certainly wait until your team says you are ready physically for some of the more active. I have faith in you, I send you virtual, tender, caring, positive hugs.
carrying things: lavrge canvas or shopping bags and bungee cords on both sides of my arm rests. Cheap; inexpensive; available in hardware stores; adjustable by knotting one end to temporarily shorten one; simplicity itself to attach and remove. I also bring one with me , open in my lap, while shopping....fill it up, check out, refill it after paying, remove when I get back to the car...so I cn always put the heavy items on or neat the bottom and bread on top. Tie the straps together so nothing falls out. One lift into the car does it, and no tipped over plastic bags and produce rolling all over the trunk.
I’m moving currently and getting a fixer upper home to make it accessible! I loved watching this video and absolutely adored the dog on the trampoline!
Laundry bags have been hugely helpful. Ever since I figured out how to kick one down the stairs (my issues are balance and dyskinesia), I have been able to consistently get my stuff down independently for washing. Getting it back up is another story but on days I'm able, the bags with the backpack straps help a lot so my arms can focus on keeping me safe. Other times I have to ask for help.
Nice video, it's always interesting to see how other wheelchair users adapt their homes 😀 Enjoyed the foot pedal bin dig - it always amazes us how many disabled toilets and accessible hotel rooms have them! We've been tempted to make a video just about bins and accessibility since they seem to get overlooked so often!
Thank you. Sure you should make a video. Have you see this one and my #letitdangle campaign? ruclips.net/video/C1R5i3mrsfw/видео.html It would be a good follow on from that maybe?
@@Wheelsnoheelsthis is the first we've heard of it actually. Just watched your video, it's definitely a good awareness raiser - not something we've ever really paid attention to in the past but we'll be more conscious of checking whether their tied up or free now! What sort of response have you had since you released the video? Have you noticed any improvement at all?
Funny - my husband doesn't smile nearly that much when he cleans! Must be a British thing lol - And tell Daisy she has good taste! I'm a Cher fan as well ;)
I wish that I had a home like that ! I am a amputee in a wheelchair now at 59 ,I lost my leg at 18,and I was fine until I fell and blow my knee cap out ,but we can't afford stuff like this, we don't even have a handicap vehicle, I think it is wonderful that she has nice things like this !! have a wonderful day
Donna Couch, check into the government (state/provincial and federal), War Amps, your Insurance, your prosthetics supplier, social worker, health care team and anyone else you can think of in that area. Also, think outside the box in that it and a handicap car do not have to be new as long as they meet whatever the current standards are in your area. You will find that most likely both will be significantly less expensive and just as suitable used. Also check with your income tax department for whatever programs are available.
I'm also in a wheelchair, I have a condition called MED (multiple epiphyseal dysplasia) I'm not in a wheelchair all the time but most of the time I am. I'm really insucure about being in a wheelchair bcz im always getting bullied by people at school, and I hate it. But you have inspired me to love who I am and ignore the bullies!
Excuse me darling but f*** all of them! Nobody knows what it's like to be you. What come easy for most is harder for us and we overcome a lot more obstacles each day than the rest of these a**holes that make you feel down! This makes me so angry. Kids are so mean. I don't usually use bad language, but in this case I'll allow myself;) Give them a huuuggee big FU right to their faces!
This is really useful to see. I have a purpose built wheelchair accessible house, I'm not paralysed I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome but I do use a wheelchair. I always wonder how other people manage using a wheelchair so Thankyou for sharing, I'd love to show you our house one day. We're just extending the kitchen atm, one of my fave buys is my extending dining table. It is the size of a small desk most of the time, but extends to about 3.5m when needed. Also f you ever change mattresses again, check out dormeo, I suffer with alot of pain and the octaspring range is super comfy, the topper is insane! Literally makes my bed a marshmallow. It's a 2 storey house here but I can't get upstairs, it's the kids domain! Agree with alot of the things you've said in the video tip wise though, gonna go check out what other videos u have. But you will probably see me pop up and comment again 😊
We put in a Rev-a-Shelf in each cabinet one month at a time. The cabinets come out as drawers. Even the Ikea recycling bucket can make a difference if you want to put bottles of things. It costs half of what a Rev-A-Shelf costs and is plastic on a metal frame. This is what we put in all the bathrooms to save money and still be accessible to all the things in the cabinet. If you want more ideas, Stone Cottage Adventures has newer ideas from this year for someone with wheelchair use. I really liked your video. Happy New Year!
I'm getting one of those beds soon, I can't wait! How do you manage grass in your chair? I managed to get stuck (wheels sunk, it wasn't even muddy though) when retrieving my dog from his visit to Mr hedgehog at the bottom of the garden, I live alone, so it was pure luck that I had my phone on me, otherwise I would have been stuck for god knows how long... and now I'm scared to go on grass again.
Wow that sound scary! I'm also by myself and only been in a chair for a month. Haven't left the apartment much, and now come spring so I'll probably spend more time outside - I'll definitely remember this tip!
I been in a wheelchair for 3 months now when my yard is not wet it's easy to go in the grass but if it rains then unable to cause will get stuck I have my yard cut regularly cause more easy with the chair on cut grass if grass is lil high n thick makes it harder I'm in the process of having a walkway put in from my porch to the driveway the way my porch is built cause of the door my ramp goes off toward back of my house which is a trailer so having a walkway built from end of my ramp to my car parking pad that way don't have to reschedule things around the rain
I myself need an accessible housing! I use a walker and it is a challenge to climb up and down the stairs of my apartment. I have the very same I coffee maker as you
I have a claw for when my kitties flick their toys under the furniture. And whenever something falls behind the dryer. I'm pretty short, so the claw is my fave. If only it was socially acceptable to take it shopping!
@@yvonnejohnson1004 My mom, at her tallest, was 4 foot eleven inches. When she first saw grabbers, she had ro have one for each rooms downstairs. They are amazingly useful for most people,
Yay! I love house tours. Also love all the hacks you've thrown in! I really really want a stair lift like yours, but my insurance won't cover one and it's 10k to put in :( :( Oh well, maybe someday!
Becky Baker I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I’m sorry to hear that you can’t get a lift in. I don’t think they are as much over here. Well depending what kind of one you need I guess. X
Very nice. The accessibility has to make it easy for you. I need to do the same eventually. Nice the way your wheelchair fits everywhere. The kitchen door off makes it easy. Good idea. Like the kitchen setup. Haha the claw is an awesome tool too. Crazy that it's two Stories but you got it. Your husband lol. Love the pets, I have a boxer too.
Go Gem! Fantastic video and fun to watch. Seriously impressed with how you get about. You forgot to show your “sliding down the bannister in the morning routine” Haha only joking! 😆 x
Oh yeah i too used the claw . i was in rehab ( in 2015 ) i fractured my R leg tibia. As i was on the mend :) my therapist gave a that to get my short on . fond times. Lol
Not sure if you are aware but you can get wheelchair carpet which makes wheelchairs movement eaiser. We had it for my bother as he had a special buggy and it's very handy! Even more handy when my.mum broke her leg and was on a wheelchair too xx
New to your channel, great to see an insight on how you live. The editing was spot on, only if i had a live in chef too that would be great! All the best to you and your family
I've just started watching your videos after one came up on my recommended and for the longest time I swear I thought your channel name was 'wheelsONheels'... I was so confused for the longest time haha.
I wonder about a few things: Would it be easier with the fancy fridge/freezer drawers? Would it be easier with the oven a bit higher so the door is over your lap?
I open those trash cans with my caster when I come across them, I don't know if it'll work with manual chairs though. 😆 Shawn... stopit, you aren't THAT tall. 🤣

Also, think outside the box in that it and a handicap car do not have to be new as long as they meet whatever the current standards are in your area. You will find that most likely both will be significantly less expensive and just as suitable used. Also check with your income tax department for whatever programs are available.
Sorry to hear this. Can you draw on superannuation or pension because of disability. Also what other poster just said. Best wishes
Great house tour, appreciate how much effort you & Shaun put into filming, have a stairlift & a 2nd wheelchair too as our house is two storey also
I'm also in a wheelchair, I have a condition called MED (multiple epiphyseal dysplasia) I'm not in a wheelchair all the time but most of the time I am.
I don't usually use bad language, but in this case I'll allow myself;)
Give them a huuuggee big FU right to their faces!
; )
Good for you. Ignore the morons, they are pathetic inhumans. Adopt Gems positive problem solving approach and try to figure out what you want / can do
I am a paraplegic out of the US. I will have to say this is one of the better Vlogs. You are very funny.
I love your videos! It is good to see how others deal with with different thing like we do.
Crumpets and toast in a chilly day!!! Yummy!
You are looking beautiful! I love your pink shirt!
Jerryskeeper O thank you. It’s from primark x
Was the house open plan when you moved in or did you convert it to make it more accessible?
Dungeonfreak we bought it off a lady who was in a wheelchair. She did a lot of “opening it up.” We took the door off the kitchen.
I enjoyed that bit as well. He needs to learn backflips
Love your energy♥️♥️
Lo que más me ha gustado es EL ASCENSOR.
I love when the dog was jumping on the trampoline and her daughter pretending to be Miranda Sings
Every video a delight...inspiring and instructing the world....love you Gem...always great work!
I have the very same I coffee maker as you
Hello, Congratulations 👍👊🙌🙌🙌🙌❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. God Bless You All ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This was wonderful! Gave me ideas...
Jessie Lopez half it gave you a bit of inspo x
Me to.. bye bye kitchen door! 🙌
Loving these vids they are really helpful, informative and fun to watch. Thank you xxx
You are so optimistic about everything!
I love how you have fun doing all this i saw in the video! :D
I have those baskets for my hair stuff I love how smiley u are :)
I have a claw for when my kitties flick their toys under the furniture. And whenever something falls behind the dryer. I'm pretty short, so the claw is my fave. If only it was socially acceptable to take it shopping!
We’ve got a grabber in every room....they are great.....
@@yvonnejohnson1004 My mom, at her tallest, was 4 foot eleven inches. When she first saw grabbers, she had ro have one for each rooms downstairs. They are amazingly useful for most people,
7:40 the dog on the trampoline 😂😍
I love your house and I love your cat and Dog?
Well you are so blessed do you have all of that!
Is your stair lift curved? My straight stair lift was only £1000.
@@ecologist_to_be It would be curved, we have a long stairwell. I'm also in the US, so the pricing is a bit different
Becky Baker look into government programs. Or if you gave insurance ask about adaptive technology.
I'm in the US and for our 13 step staircase (straight) the quotes I've been given area US$3-5K -- EACH!
My nephew who's 3 calls our claw thing the grabber getter. I think it's a good name and it's stuck!
love your dog Boxer he smart. Cute
Omg when your dog went full cpr on the trampoline it made my day
You and your family is Beautiful
The one thing that made a difference for me is the bathroom door it’s gonna and we have a curtain it works for us
My family does the same thing with brushing our teeth. Because sometimes we are in a rush
Go Gem! Fantastic video and fun to watch. Seriously impressed with how you get about. You forgot to show your “sliding down the bannister in the morning routine” Haha only joking! 😆 x
☀️ Sunny Days ☀️ hahaha that’s hilarious!! 😂
Adorable home
I adore how your daughter was imitating @miranda sings!
"Another thing that is handy is THE CLLAAWWWW hehehehe"
I need to get one of those claw things!
Oh yeah i too used the claw . i was in rehab ( in 2015 ) i fractured my R leg tibia. As i was on the mend :) my therapist gave a that to get my short on . fond times. Lol
New sub here I’ve been watching you for a long time think your great 👍
You can do this girl
Not sure if you are aware but you can get wheelchair carpet which makes wheelchairs movement eaiser. We had it for my bother as he had a special buggy and it's very handy! Even more handy when my.mum broke her leg and was on a wheelchair too xx
Shannon's World really??? That’s so cool?? Where from??
@@Wheelsnoheels not too sure as I was only five at the time. Maybe worth doing a Google? It's tougher than normal carpet c
@@Wheelsnoheels i dunno if it wheelchair carpet they mean. I have carpet that is more suited to wheelchairs as it glued down etc and thinner
Carpet stores recommend commercial grade low pile carpet.
I thought her she was in a parking lot at first not her driveway. Never seen a driveway like that.
It’s parking space outside her home
My mum has a drive way like that bcz means my mum are both in my wheelchair so it makes it easier for both of us.
Its becuae3 they live in conjoined houses so there is multi parking out front
I think it may be a UK parking setup. Conjoined terraces in Australia just have plain parking. Or could've because of disability parking.
New to your channel, great to see an insight on how you live.
The editing was spot on, only if i had a live in chef too that would be great! All the best to you and your family
I bought an automatic touchless trashcan. Perfect, no touching nasty flaps.
L-o-V-e Wheelchair Thanks You 😊🌹
Not using a wheelchair but I found using boxes in my higher cupboards worked great to use the space(however I know that might not work for everyone)
OOH A LOWERD CURB!! Wow.
JK this is really sweet and inspiring! Good good lady. 🙂👍
Hi you are so creative😆 how come I didn't think of that 🤔
I open those trash cans with my caster when I come across them, I don't know if it'll work with manual chairs though. 😆
Shawn... stopit, you aren't THAT tall. 🤣
I loved it ❤
Great video gem! When the house is all sorted I shall film a house tour too 😊
