- Christopher Doyle discusses his cinematography philosophies and life lessons.
Christopher Doyle is one of the world's most recognizable cinematographers, whose work in Hong Kong with directors such as Edward Yang, Patrick Tam, Stanley Kwan and especially Wong Kar-wai gave him international renown. He has since worked extensively in Chinese cinema, including Peter Chan, Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou, while also working with Western directors Gus Van Sant, Jim Jarmusch, M. Night Shyamalan, Phillip Noyce and more.
Christopher was in Toronto for TIFF's A Century of Chinese Cinema program, which included his installation, Away With Words. It was our pleasure to invite him to Sex Laser for a few rounds of drinks and talk about life lessons, art philosophy, and deliberately misleading his mother about the start-time of a Happy Together screening.

He might be the Bukowski of our days.... btw this is the best interview I've ever seen. The waitress joining the conversation, the microphone not working, the two of them getting drunk.... This is pure reality! good work
I prefer the interviews in which he is coherent. His focus here is his effort to seduce the waitress.
And Bukowski is a bore, except perhaps for fellow drunkards.
i felt the same way!! In fact this is one of my favourite films.
@@jnagarya519 yes!!!!! Natural and so interesting!!!!!
I began to find Bukowski a bit too self-indulgent compared to similar writers in early high school - but you’re still pretty correct. That comment about how he was trying this entire time to win the waitress is so true- then again the waitress is really down to get him drunker. Anyway yeah, this heavily reminds me of something written by Bukowski, Miller, or Tanazaki..
Doyle is nothing like Bukowski.
Hands down, this is that best Interview that Doyle has ever done. I’ve seen this plenty of times and I just love the dialogue between those two.
Whew, like his work, but it reminds me why I don’t hang out in bars anymore.
This is the greatest interview I've seen recently, probably I should rewatch it appropriately drunk.
The greatest living cinematographer today!
Amazing guy, the girl tho... "When you are in the 20s, you think your are look for the answer, when you are older, you realise you are looking for questions." well said,
So true❤️❤️❤️
20 cameras, 1 shit microphone.
I wish y'all would do more video interviews!!! This is fantastic.

In Chris's head " I..I sense that I went too far.....hm..gotta re-direct"
Such a raw fascinating interview.
Amazing ☕️ camera can’t keep focus mic is fucked up and still best interview I’ve heard in a while. Thanks 🙏
i cannot decide whether this is the worst thing ever or if it is interesting, the comments are equally conflicting, and i agree with all
Doyle has so much personality
One of those human beings, who inspire you just to be, not to achieve anything
To be is just something so important, that you(we) should recognize yourself first.❤️❤️❤️
He's drunk. That's a way to avoid "just being".
@@jnagarya519 somehow yes
Haha Chris doyle making the cameraguys working harder doing 3-way dialogue scene out of nowhere
thx much for upload/share...enjoy his films and enjoy hearing his words of being...
absolutely beautiful, and yes "about time" you moved the camera :P . This is probably one of the best interviews I have seen. Literally waiting for the crew to pass out and Chris to walk away with the girl who cares.
probably the best interview I've ever seen :-)
She really Cares :) , He's a great Cinematographer, and message sis clear, Keep it simple, make film you love, communicate in the way you do
He's drunk, and distracted by trying to seduce the very young waitress.
alcohol is a tough chemical on human bodyminds
omg, shes beautiful and she really cares
jeremy AU and we care... because she cares
And she's beautiful because she cares
Incredible conversation, incredible engagement... Look at you
“If you ask me what’s my best film I say my next film”
What a good interview, very genuine
This is a beautiful man
What? He's a notorious drunk.
What's the intro track called and who's the artist??
This is a great interview.
This is amazing...
Thank you Chris!
how come no one talks about his film with Patrick tam My heart is an Eternal rose
3:10 lol don't get yourself in trouble Mr Doyle.
I am about to check to see if he has any, or hopefully many novels published.. if not, jipped. He is speaking a lot of what I mean to say.
A true artist. Keep astonishing us Chris.
What a pisser! Just love him.
Christopher is my cousin
what is the name of the opening song?
Spor Uten Navn! its my song! thanks for asking!
@@grfnklgrfnklI was wondering the same thing and bang saw the question answered right here. Congrats, this is such a beautiful and cinematic song. Just curious, what language are the lyrics and what are they about??? Cheers mate
Great interview.
Any new projects coming up or is this channel officially dead? Your work is very exciting.
So intelligent and artful but such a sad base and condescending view of women from how he treats the waittress
yeah ive seen similar shit from other interviews, it made the interview pretty hard to watch tbh
He drinks a lot, perhaps. Looks like some kind of trauma he has, or the art is overwhelming
Cause he drunkly flirts badly with a woman? 😂 Grow up.
... He’s 72 and he’s pretty drunk here - I’m not saying he’s a saint otherwise either, but you’re boxing him in to this characteristic a lil much, defining him as “sad” is a bit ridiculous, a drunk curbside blurting the war’s going on are fake is a sad base drunk, Doyle was like Alan Watts in the sense that his drunkenness never debased him in his creative work ethic, which sets him apart from many- he drank, loved the ladies, and was from another generation wherein flirtatiousness was a lot more otg (or at less insane) than today- i mean idk his reasons - i’m js the guy isn’t this sap being interviewed after being kicked out of a club lmao, maybe on some days, nobody is perfect - he deserves more credit than you give nevertheless
This is like watching a video of someone wired after a surgery and saying “wow, they slur like an idiot with no consideration”
Plus women today are way tf more sexually open as men begin to be scared away dating entirely which is sad to see afh, I’m nottttttt calling Doyle a model citizen god no, but I mean, he’s certainly still an excellent film maker and cinematographer before any of the abovementioned traits- compared to today, Lightened up as it were>a bit cringe but
Hey can someone tell me the opening song? I'm losing my mind here
it's an original song made for the video. Spor Uten Navn by Adam Gurfinkel.
Same here
“You share with the audience how people feel about people”
The jerking camera is sincere but also gives me a headache. Points for bringing up That Day on the Beach.
whats the name of the intro song ?
14:48 LMAOOOO
Are you high? Doyle
"I give a shit about what's happening between us now"
He was drunk before the interview started…. I think he forgot he was in an interview lol 😂.
Love his work but man I felt uncomfortable for the waitress
Haha legend
батя набухался опять и толкает речь о жизни
When the interviewee is so amazing the wanky camera and dog shite sound cant even kill the intensity . 😂😂😂
great interview, terrible sound.
This interview is more interesting then most of Hong Sang-Soo's movies!
That was personal 💀💀
But not all
hhh il est très intéressé par la fille, les yeux du chasseur
Absolutely love this mans work but wow sexual needs really overpower everything "I dont give a shit about my films all I care about is what's happening between me and this waitress isn't that astonishing?" This guy is just trying to talk about his work and all chris wants to do is go home with her smh
I hope he got laid .
I thought this interview was very interesting in the beginning but around 50 minuets It started to go off the rails lol
The waitress should stand up and leave.
After a while she's engaged in the conversation and having a good time, why be a police telling people what they should or shouldn't do, or a judge about the guy being a "creep", if the girl doesn't mind him hitting on her...
@@jonjohnson4981 abuse is kept in silence for ages because lots of people believe in such explanations like yours.
@@zuzannasymonowicz1752 Wow, you're really equating this to abuse? Stop being such a snowflake, will you?
@@zuzannasymonowicz1752 what abuse? you're insane
I’ve always loved his work- but was unaware he was as well-spoken and engaging about art and cinema as Werner Herzog for example, or Henry Miller.. Plus he’s pretty wasted here.
"Citizen Kane" is hugely overrated.
"beautiful women giving us whisky"
#lookism
:(
"your job is to be a beautiful woman..." I admire his work, but this really disappointed me..
Omg when he hits on the waitress I lost 80% of my respect for him
Oh, come on, that was so tame and harmless.
I think one of the life lessons here is that the man's an alcoholic and a jerk, among other things.
He's coming off as vacuous as burned-out Keith Richards.
Nah. Keith seems to be more happy
Edward Yang has nothing to do with Hong Kong
Chris did shoot a film for him
Jin Hien Lau No, but Christopher Doyle first film as a DP was ‘That Day on the Beach’ by Edward Yang which was Yang first solo work.
A visual Bukowski
