He was heavily criticized for his voice, a lot of people saying his vocals wasn't stable and his voice breaks often, but honestly he's improved tremendously over these few years and I'm so proud of him
To the people insulting this performance: I’d like to see you do this song live. Because of the arrangement of the notes, it is extremely difficult to do, especially live with an audience like that. So, maybe Bebe didn’t sound the best, Louis had a couple rough spots but overall I think he did great. They are HUMAN and it’s a hard song, just because they don’t sound 100% like the studio version doesn’t mean they can’t sing, in fact they both have beautiful and unique voices. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

He lost a lot of confidence over the years, though, which is sad, but he seems to be regaining it back, now, and hopefully the more he does on his own, the more confident he becomes again. He used to belt his lungs out without a second's pause, and it's kind of heartbreaking to realise what changed along the way.
