Hate to say it, but despite his threat and ominous presence, he would not gotten as nearly as far in that tournament without the god cards or the shadow games. Reading through the manga, Odion's field spell apparently lets HIM place 2 trap cards down at once. So apparently a rule in Battle City is only putting down a single set card at a time. His temple is also a continuous spell card, not a field spell card.
On his first turn, he summons Gearfried, Panther Warrior...and Landstar. Geez.
It is fully stated, even written on the visible card shown, that the Apophis Trap Monsters are summonable after an attack.
Fisherman is a 4 star monster in the manga, and because Joey didn't take Insect Queen, he has Jinzo and Fisherman on the field when Odion draws the fake Ra. So instead, he puts down Baby Dragon.
Yeah, Selket doesn't ever have its defense displayed in the manga, since it is unnecessary. Oh, and Joey did have a monster in his hand in the manga, but didn't play it due to Selket being too strong. But Odion also gives Joey his respect, which is why Joey calls him out on not being Marik. So Marik orders Odion to prove otherwise by summoning Ra. Yugi already had suspicions that Odion isn't Marik, which he reveals after Joey calls Odion out, and showing a card in the midst of the duel would probably be illegal. So the only way to prove it would be to summon Ra, which Yugi suspected was sealed in the temple. And yeah, Marik says that sealing a card in the temple would protect him from both attacks and magic.
So yes, shenanigans at the end, but for Marik, it was entirely justifiable. Only by summoning Ra would Odion dash away any claims that he isn't Marik, and showing the card may reveal it to be a fake, or even illegal during a duel.

In the manga, Battle City rules state that each player may only set 1 Spell and 1 Trap face down per turn, and Temple of the Kings allows the user to set 2 Traps per turn instead, that could be why Odion is only setting 2 of his cards per turn instead of flooding his backrow on his first turn. I’ll always find Joey’s Foolish Burial + Graverobber = Jinzo play iconic. I will say that I do find it frustating that Joey was dead to rights and had no outs to escape Odion’s direct attack. At least if he did have a way out, I would respect him in this duel more, but Marik really almost destroyed himself by forcing Odion to play fake Ra.
I think it could’ve been interesting if Joey had a card that would win him the duel during the last turn, so when Marik commands Odion to play fake Ra, he has a 2nd reason as Ra wouldn’t have been affected by the set card. In this scenario, Odion would be gambling on what the set card is, but as we see, he really didn’t want to play fake Ra.
As we see in later Battle City, a similar scenario occurs in Joey vs Marik with plot armor saving Marik there, as it does save Joey here.

Shadow Games demonstrated what they can do and thus, did what they were supposed to do: be dangerous for people without Millennium Items.
So, shadow games were an already established story mechanic at this moment. It's fair to use, as far as I'm concerned.
In terms of story, Joey’s fate was deserved.
This duel was far more egregious though, because as you stated, Odion had no reason to play Ra. He could have literally just shown he had the fake Egyptian God card after he won the duel.

I'm starting to notice how bad the quarterfinals were in the Battle City Tournament.
Yugi vs. Bakura was riddled with misplays and alternate plays that could've ended the duel earlier. The only saving grace was Yugi summoning Silfer the Sky Dragon.
Joey vs. Odion was one of the biggest robs, as Odion could've won if he didn't follow Marik's orders.
Marik vs. Mai was arguably the best of the four main duels, (Yami Marik vs. Yami Bakura was more or less a bonus duel,) but Mai lost her chance when attempted to use the Winged Dragon of Ra.
Kaiba vs. Ishizu was another duel where the opponent was robbed. If Ishizu didn't rely on her Millennium Necklace that predicted a predestined duel, and the Millennium Rod not intervening to help Kaiba win, Ishizu would've.
And Yami Marik vs. Yami Bakura was a joke. Bakura got absolutely bodied by Yami Marik. Even with the spirit of Marik helping Bakura defeat his eviler counterpart, he still lost. In fact, with the sole exception of Yami Marik using the effects of the Winged Dragon of Ra, Marik didn't lose any life points during this duel.

The Game Boy Advance title Yu-Gi-Oh! The Sacred Cards honestly makes the Battle City tournament a lot better in my eyes since there aren't any duels that have giant asterisks near them (Joey winning by standing up, Mai not going for game with the Harpie Lady Sisters, Kaiba winning because he saw something in a dream).
Yugi still beats Bakura, but your player character duels Odion (you take Ishizu's place) and wins, still freeing Yami Marik as a result. Joey then loses and almost dies to Marik, and Kaiba beats Mai. In the semis, your character beats Yugi and Kaiba loses to Marik, and in the finals, you obviously beat Marik. Sure, it can't be canon for obvious reasons, but at least the duels are believable.

I think it does need reminding that joey is meant to be an underdog character who never really got his hands on good cards. His only good cards came from his wins vs. other duelists and even then their power level is questionable as really the only good one is Jinzo. He is using a deck of reject cards and shows their potential with cards that people consider not useful, showing that even the meek can be mighty in the right circumstances, effectively mimicing the style Yugi uses throughout the series who uses a combination of cards and boosts and tricks to evade and overpower far stronger monsters. The difference is that Joey likes his cards, he plays what he enjoys. He manages to do well in Duelist Kingdom but Battle City once more trips him up with new rules and he never truly thinks about improving his deck because ironically his luck wins him duels which leads to him being lazy about his deck.
By all accounts, he is akin to Yusei from 5Ds. He uses "trash" cards that many don't think are good and he shows people their potential when you let them shine. Gearfried and Flame swordsman both represent joey in a sense in that one is one held back by restraints placed by themselves (in this case his restrain is literally himself, not acknowledging his reliance on luck) and Flame Swordsman the card he wants to be. Later down the line, Joey I feel would develop well and if we got to see him more and see where he would of gone, I feel his deck would revolve around Warrior Toolbox strategies with a small touch of luck thrown in via the Dice cards and keeping Fairy Box in.
He isn't a bad duelist. Just a bad deck builder.

Orion was honestly a far better duelist than Marik.
Marik mostly depended of using the Shadow Games so his opponents would die before the combat ended, so his decks mostly consisted of torture tool. Good for making the opponents "Give Up", but not the best at actually winning.
And this almost costed him the victory multiple times.
On the other side, Orion was simply STRONG and had a VERY solid strategy on his deck, and countermeasures against the countermeasures that could be used against it.
It's funny to think what would have happened if we changed the games a bit, so Joey fought against Marik instead of Orion, and won (Because we all know he won that duel, but was robbed of it the same way Orion was robbed of winning this one).
That could have led to Joey fighting Orion later on, but this time owning the Winged Dragon of Ra, which may have been enough to defeat the Mystical Beast of Serket.
And if he lost there, that would mean that Orion, now the true owner of the Winged Dragon of Ra, would ahve fought against Yugi at the end.
I know this couldn't happen because story reasons, but taht Orion vs Yugi would ahve been an amazing duel XD.

What happens with the Embodiment of Apophis problem is something that is very common in these early duels that are adapted from the manga. In this case, what happens is that Embodiment of Apophis can only be activated when you are attacked, its manga effect is: "Activated when an opponent's monster attacks! This card becomes the Trap Monster blablabla" (Thats why anime Odion mentions it). The problem is that the card in the anime does not have that restriction written, so tecnically Odion could simply win in that part of the duel. The duel analysis is completely correct, but for those who are confused about about this type of plays I would recommend taking a look at its manga counterparts since there you can find the reasons for many of the characters weird plays/decisions. Another example of this weird decisions of that (because of the Battle City manga rules) you can only set 1 Trap Card per turn so Temple of the Kings allow Odion to set 2 traps per turn and thats why he only sets 2 in anime as well.

A bit odd since while you can't see the text in full, in a few freeze frames of the Japanese version you can see "battle phase" and while part of it is obscured, there isn't enough space in the part that can't be seen for it to specify that an attack is declared as an activation requirement. At best it might say "Activate only during a Battle Phase. This card is treated as a Normal Monster Card (Reptile-Type/EARTH/Level 4/ATK 1600/DEF 1800), and is Special Summoned to your Monster Card Zone. (This card is also still treated as a Trap Card.)"

Yo Yuma vs Nasch is one of my favorite duels in all of Yu-gi-oh! It's the culmination of all the emotional and dueling build up between the two. And the action was amazing, Barian Hope was a ridiculous boss monster having access to SEVEN effects, and the summoning of Utopia Beyond in the Japanese is one of the most epic summonings I've ever seen in Yu-Gi-Oh.
Oh and to address your pont about Nasch's attack with Aero shark and Lancer, he actually couldn't have attacked with Aero Shark since Utopia still had 2000 attack points. It was when Nasch used Aero shark to try and finish off Yuma that Yuma had to activate his trap to negate the damage, but unfortuantely it also lower Uotpia's attack points by the amount negated, so Utopia only had 1600.
Course that trap then became an overlap unit, so Yuma was able to negate Lancer's attack and survive with just 50 life points. Fun fact, I'm pretty sure nasch would've won the turn he summoned Barian Hope, cause he couuld've just used the effect of Dark Knight that it gained to absorb Utopia, and then even if Yuma survives the attack, without Utopia he's got no way to win since the rest of his hand was spells and traps revolved around helping Utopia or surviving damage.
It could be that in the anime, Silent Honor Dark has other conditions that it needs to meet to absorb a monster, but I don't think it was ever stated in the Japanese sub so, yeah, Nasch screwed up. Still, no regrets about the duel, especially the ending where Yuma's strength of character shined through the most and Nasch's reveal that he knew what Yuma was going to play and his goodbye were beautifully done

Fun fact: There are similar patterns between this duel and the one against Yami Marik, in terms of traps and being close to victory
But one moment to highlight, against Yami Marik, Joey in the sub hopes to draw his “giant trunade” (hurricane) card to clear Marik’s field to win
But he fails to draw it and it’s a very rare moment to hear a character wish for a card we know is in their deck but fail to draw it, that I wish happened a bit more often

  • @ron2millionare972

Joey would have won if he didn't summon Hayabusa Knight before using Giant Trunade. It can attack twice, so if he could have used it instead of Battle Warrior, he would have dealt 2400 + 1000x2+ 500 = 4900 damage. Hell, he wouldn't have needed Swordsman of Landstar because he could have dealt 4400 damage.

If he attacked with Aero Shark first and then Black Ray Lancer, Yuma with only 350 LP left and Utopia with 1600 ATK, Nasch would’ve dealt 500 damage to Yuma and won.

So if Odion's Serket can be tributed that way to summon Ra, then it's anime card description probably includes something like "After this card destroys a monster by battle, equip that monster to this card. This card can be treated as the number of tributes equal to the number of equipped monsters for a tribute summon."

  • @UnexSpecter
    @UnexSpecter 14 дней назад

I have the answer to your Serket question
Unless the monster’s effect is negated, a ??? stat is adopted as the current base stat. So that stat is carried over with Shield And Sword
I used a setup with Tyranno Infinity equipped with Bashing Shield (which boosts ATK by 1000), and Shield And Sword. Tyrrano Infinity’s effect ATK became its DEF, so its DEF became banished cards times 1000. However the boosted ATK via Bashing Shield carried over to its changed ATK. Since its original DEF was 0, its new ATK became 0 + 1000 due to Bashing shield.
To summarize: the altered base stat (white numbers) becomes the new DEF
That being said, Serket’s stats would depend on whether its ATK and DEF are being boosted or being changed.
If the base stats are being changed (which is usually followed by the word “becomes”), then the 5825 ATK would swap with whatever its DEF number currently is.
If its effect was boosting its stats (Which is usually followed by the word “gains”), then Serket would basically just lose 2500 ATK since its original ATK and DEF swap, but the 3325 it gained would stay on its new ATK.

Gearfried the Lightning- would be ironic given it was very close to winning him the duel against Marik, but at the same time he couldn't have played it.

Side feedback too from your previous "what modern deck DM characters uses", Odion "indirectly" got support for Continuous trap decks with Qardan and Pharaonic Advent, so I'd say he would play trap monster + floodgate deck, with ace monster of Egyptian God Slime.

  • @magalypolleunis7589

If you look at it from the Manga perspective, the way Odion explains the Temple's Effects, one can deduce that attacking/burning him directly means aiming it at the sealed monster card: Râ. Anime versions of gods are immune to effects (no magics on him then)* and, by imagining the monster would instantly be summoned in case of an attack, Odion could use Râ's effects to handle Joey's monsters.
*That, or everyeffecting destinedto Odion could be seen as targeting, thus countered by the real immunity of gods to targeted effects.
This is how I understood that "protection part" of the temple, but it's only my interpretation
