Thanks! I always thought those who render clothes in insane detail is crazily badass because they need to do the cloth simulation manually. I never thought it is so easy in 3ds max. Thanks for the video, i am very grateful :)
This was happening to me too. But,I totally(also manually deleted hidden files after uninstallation) uninstalled and reinstalled 3ds max.And now again I can do that.Good luck.
mcloth is supposed to just be altered version of the cloth modifier, but now supports and can interacts with all of mass fx rigid and soft body objects
a small tip for you, see those hard edges that eppeared after u simulated it as if the sheet is cut through by the table edges ? after you make simulation and u are done with modifier cloth, do shell gives thickness ;) i hope i helped
Nice tutorial, but i like more to use a spline and do garment maker modifier and does a random internal structure that look more natural in my opinion when simulating clothing. cheers.
you increase the Subsample in the Simulation Parameters. and increase the thickness in the Object Properties, thickness setting will calculate how thick your fabric is.
Yes, what you could do is simulate with your character instead of the table. Let it go on for some time, then stop it. Then go through the frames and look for the frame you prefer, and delete all other frames. That would effectively give you what you want :) PM me if I misunderstood you.
Awesome tutorial man!!! I just finished a key board and monitor in this program, I could use the cloth technique to create a scene unveiling the computer Monitor I created!!! ps you should do a video on modeling an avengers character other than iron man like capt America, or even better like a capt America shield with dents and bullet holes in it!!! that would be sick!!! :)
That's new... What does it do when clicked? Did you add the cloth and table to the respective groups (Collision Object/Cloth). Try creating a new scene and see if the same happens..
I haven't done characters AT ALL but you could try animating it, and making the character a Collision Object and Simulating. Should work, theoretically
i have a idea for no cut of edages first make a box and go to shapes selete rectangle and go to modify and selete Garment marker and selete cloth and add box set the box to colin object and the rectangle to cloth /silk and simulate it done sorry for my bad english
It's not free for everyone. If you are a student, you can go to the Autodesk student site to download. You'll have to register first. This also applies to Maya.
Well for now Maya and XSI has been bought by Autodesk... I agree that Houdini is quite a wonder, specially for particles, but it's more about personnal preferences and number of core than main software possibilities nowadays.
in a node system you have an overview of all the connections made by you. Search about it, you will find it interesting and useful for more complex and realistic projects.
hey man i just watched ur cloth stimulation video on the iron man head it was awasome oh my name is harsh can u give me more tips so that i can do my projects well
If you directly hit render without checking the 'save file' box in the render setup dialog, then 3ds Max does not save the file. It stays in the frame buffer (or the 'rendered frame window') till a new render is done. You can save it manually by clicking the save button on the top of the window.
I mean if you really want a rectangular shape table with sharp edges that the cloth falls into, is there anyway we can do that instead of changing the shape of the table into something else?
I have one big question, I think it does concern clothing: Sure you make the simulation... But if you want to make a cloth that has different colors on each side? Will I have to add shell modiffier and pray for it to do not crash?
Hi, thanks for this. Sadly i have a problem, when I simulate it does not look like your cloth at all, more like its some hard leather or something, no cloth detail. I set the Silk preset, same thing.
Hello mate, it´s very nice your method. I have a problem when I simulate the process. The point is that when i simulate, the cloth do not touch the objetc when it starts bending...as if there would be a invisible object...any idea of this problem? Thank You
Just like I used a table for the cloth to fall on, you can try to model a hanger and make the shirt hang on it, it will make the natural creases you want :) Hope that helps!
Thanks for the Tut.. :) can U make a video based on how to perfectly attach separately created 2 polygon objects. I have attached them using 'Attach' option but the vertices of both d poly's r separate n not getting weld at all.. Please help on this topic..
instead of selecting only the vertices that join both polygons, select all the vertices aftr attaching both polygons and press weld button ,now u see ,they r weld
When I click the simulation button, The tab thing your video showed didn't load. It won't load, Do I need a better video card? Or do I have to wait a few hours or 30 minutes.
Excuse me , if it possible to did the Cloth Simulation with the cube object. Cause in the video you have to smooth the object first before did the simulation , thank you :)
Hi Can I simulate a plastic gear rotating on a zipper tape using this software? I would like to see the deformation on the zipper tape when a couple of rotating plastic gear rotating & sink on both sides of the zipper tape? Thank you.
sir can you please help with an advice .. what is the best program for animating, fantasy and video game kind of stuff (like final fantasy VIII) :) ? thanx a lot !
You understood me right, thats what I wanted! Thanks for reply, man. Reallly simple explanation. I hope, then I'll be able to import it back into Zbrush for further detailing ^_^
nice work...now, how can i apply 2 different material in this plane, (or the same thing in a paper simulation) one art or text in one side and the other side just white....can you help me please ??? i think it have to be make with edit mesh modifier, but i dont know how....
Change from standard material to a multi/sub-object material and assign it to the plane, assign different material IDs for each side using the editable poly's polygon selection rollout for example, and then make the materials you want go in their respective slots in the multi/sub-object material.
ff you by 2x and you sounded like you're rapping but you still could be understood lol. thanks. now i understood why i couldnt do my simulation. i clicked my objects as inactive lol.
If you need the cloth to fall onto a rectangular shaped table, why wouldn't you change the shape of the table? According to what I get, what you should do is, simulate the cloth to fall onto whatever shape you want it to fall onto, then delete and replace the table. Since it will save it as keyframes, instead of references, it should work..
I got a question. I am planning to make a Mirror's Edge animation and I would like to make physics for Faith's hair. Any tips on how to make thick, cloth like objects?
I tried to apply cloth over a skinned character but not animated, and what happens is the cloth goes half the way in the middle of the mesh and then it starts to hang and simulate ! help pleas
I tried to do this. but once I click on simulate butten, cloth is just falling down and disappearing from the scene. any simulation isn't happening. ?? I don't know what mistake I have made.
Hi, thanks for sharing, that was a nice tutorial but i´m looking for something a bit more complicated i guess, maybe not, hope you can help me, i need to do something like lets say cover a metal structure with a semi translucent or semi-transparent cloth, like that of a stocking maybe and i need it to look tightly wrapped around it so the cloth takes all the shapes, to later put some lights in it to create a fading effect, don't know if i'm clear enough explainig this, maybe i can send you a p.m with a sample image and see if you can help me. Thanks in advance.
im working on a project i m using your techniques for cloth sim. i have used the silk preset bt it is showing some error (cloth has become over streched ) tell me what to do !!
I can agree with that. I've seen Houdini and Maya in action, I even used them for a while and they are great in comparison to 3DS Max. Better than that probably C4D only. Blender is kinda shitty for a newbie but once you get the hang of it you are unstoppable in the kind of results you get and on the speed to make anything. Make a big city on 3DS Max under 20 minutes, I dare you CoreYaeX C4D and Blender
What else can you do if you want the cloth to fall onto a box with edges? I want to make a sheet on a bed but the cloth cuts through like in the video. I tried using a chamferbox as a "mattress" and it helps a litte since it's not as square, but still doesn't work like I want it to. Any suggestions?
Update: Using a chamferbox and increasing the fillet-settings helps A LOT when creating a bedsheet! Works great for me, the edges of the mattress needs to be pretty round though but it looks really nice!
Oh, that's not a PNG problem :D You need to change the output frames (the first option in the render setup dialog). It will be set to Single by default. Change it to Range, and input the range of frames you want to render, ex. from 1 to 100 :)
If your vocals are going to be -22db, PLEASE turn your music down to the same volume as the AVERAGE volume of your speaking. PLEASE.
thank you
Thanks!
I always thought those who render clothes in insane detail is crazily badass because they need to do the cloth simulation manually.

This was happening to me too. But,I totally(also manually deleted hidden files after uninstallation) uninstalled and reinstalled 3ds max.And now again I can do that.Good luck.
the reason why your box is clipping is because there's not enough geometry in it. increase the segments like your cloth.
mcloth is supposed to just be altered version of the cloth modifier, but now supports and can interacts with all of mass fx rigid and soft body objects
You're awesome. I have watched so many videos and tried so many times.
The plane always have no action! It finally works!
Thanks for the tutorial~ being brand new to Max, this gave me a good first impression on just how powerful this software is!
a small tip for you, see those hard edges that eppeared after u simulated it as if the sheet is cut through by the table edges ? after you make simulation and u are done with modifier cloth, do shell gives thickness ;) i hope i helped
THANK YOU. I needed this for my assignment. My teacher is terrible at instructions.
the island was a great intro music choice... best song ever
Thank you so much, this video really helped me in designing props for some projects I'm working on.
Thanks for the tutorial it really helped me with my major project.
I'm not too sure of that, but chamfering the hard edges and then Turbosmoothing them might help!
Nice tutorial, but i like more to use a spline and do garment maker modifier and does a random internal structure that look more natural in my opinion when simulating clothing. cheers.
Great Tutorial! This really helped me out a lot! Keep up the good work!
you increase the Subsample in the Simulation Parameters. and increase the thickness in the Object Properties, thickness setting will calculate how thick your fabric is.
Thanks buddy.
It was really nice and easy to understand
Nice tut.....but if I have a model with t-shirt & want want to simulate it while the model walking.....what should I do for that ?
hey for edge problem in cloth modifier try changing the offset value .cloth=5.0 and
object =3.0
Nice refresher video. Thanks man!
Yes :) Try adding a Wind Force. I've never tried it, but I'm sure it'll work!
It is, but the cloth simulator does not treat sharp surfaces well. The cloth will not act like it is supposed to.
Yes, what you could do is simulate with your character instead of the table. Let it go on for some time, then stop it. Then go through the frames and look for the frame you prefer, and delete all other frames. That would effectively give you what you want :) PM me if I misunderstood you.

I've never tried putting a cloth on an animated object, but I'm pretty sure it should work..
That's new... What does it do when clicked? Did you add the cloth and table to the respective groups (Collision Object/Cloth). Try creating a new scene and see if the same happens..
Hey ur shows are AWESOME
I haven't done characters AT ALL but you could try animating it, and making the character a Collision Object and Simulating. Should work, theoretically
Excellent. Minor point though, the bottom menus (e.g. Time Configuration) are "clipped" from the video.
I loved this tutorial, Keep making these
i have a idea for no cut of edages first make a box and go to shapes selete rectangle and go to modify and selete Garment marker
and selete cloth and add box set the box to colin object and the rectangle to cloth /silk and simulate it done
sorry for my bad english
And yeah, I am a 3dsmax user myself. But had a chance to compare to multiple different softwares.
It's not free for everyone. If you are a student, you can go to the Autodesk student site to download. You'll have to register first. This also applies to Maya.

great tutorial bro . but how can i simulate hanging clothes, like a pair of jeans hanging from one point ?
You can add wind force.
nice one. Great help, thanks!
I think you can animate the Collision object, and it should work out just fine.
@tushar tanwar I think there's something terribly wrong. Try deleting the cloth plane and start again.
really thanks for the tutorial it is totally out of the box
i dont have materials in cloths
Thanks for the tutorial it really helped me with my major project.

Awesome tutorial! Thank you very much!
I mean if you really want a rectangular shape table with sharp edges that the cloth falls into, is there anyway we can do that instead of changing the shape of the table into something else?
and did you do the iron man helmet using blue prints ? thanks for the video ..
Could u make a tutorial for a parachute cloth simulation please!
thanks for the vidoes
Thanks for your tutorial. I've refereshed practuically all about "Clothes" 3DSMAX tool. ;)
I have one big question, I think it does concern clothing: Sure you make the simulation... But if you want to make a cloth that has different colors on each side? Will I have to add shell modiffier and pray for it to do not crash?

@TheTeeeenager Just increase the length and breadth segments.
You can find them in the right pane.
cant we make the cloth move right or left instead of up and down ? it will look more realistic when you reveal the object ...
Thank you so much for very good tutorial!
I think I will! Thanks for the compliments :)
Great video man, thanks.
Thanks for the Tut.. :) can U make a video based on how to perfectly attach separately created 2 polygon objects. I have attached them using 'Attach' option but the vertices of both d poly's r separate n not getting weld at all.. Please help on this topic..

Cool. And you can make this now
Yeah....
Excuse me , if it possible to did the Cloth Simulation with the cube object.
Cause in the video you have to smooth the object first before did the simulation , thank you :)
Thanks bro major help!
Well, try re-making the scene if it is not too complex. Otherwise, on your table too hard on edges?
Thanks really useful!
Hi
Can I simulate a plastic gear rotating on a zipper tape using this software? I would like to see the deformation on the zipper tape when a couple of rotating plastic gear rotating & sink on both sides of the zipper tape?
Thank you.
Well, I don't know.. Try restarting 3ds Max? And your computer maybe?
OW thanx ^^ thats all i needed to hear ! :D
Oh right! Why didn't I think of that? ;) Thanks dude!
sir can you please help with an advice .. what is the best program for animating, fantasy and video game kind of stuff (like final fantasy VIII) :) ? thanx a lot !
You understood me right, thats what I wanted! Thanks for reply, man. Reallly simple explanation. I hope, then I'll be able to import it back into Zbrush for further detailing ^_^
or we could've made the cloth thicker to solve the problem instead of smoothing the table. Right?
After the simulation is complete, you can collapse it to a keyframed animation, then you can choose your preferred "look" from one of the keyframes.
heya ... After the Simulation done the resulting object should be my 3D Model ... What Should I do for that
Try moving the cloth up then :) And to remove intersections, you could try scaling the cloth up just a bit!
nice work...now, how can i apply 2 different material in this plane, (or the same thing in a paper simulation) one art or text in one side and the other side just white....can you help me please ??? i think it have to be make with edit mesh modifier, but i dont know how....

hey how did you increase the detail level triagles/quads whatever of the cloth? im new to 3ds infact brand new
I got a question. I am planning to make a Mirror's Edge animation and I would like to make physics for Faith's hair. Any tips on how to make thick, cloth like objects?
sure will
Well, I'm not sure why this is happening.. Are you sure you added the 'table' to the collision object and set it up like I did?

Hahahaha "What the hell is this?!" totally made me LOL.
Thanks a bunch for the tutorial. Worked to a 100% for me. :)
Thank you for doing this

@Ron619productions The song right? Yep :D
what about using it on moving objects?
What song is in your intro? I've heard it before but the name won't come up in my mind. xD
Oh, that's not a PNG problem :D
You need to change the output frames (the first option in the render setup dialog). It will be set to Single by default. Change it to Range, and input the range of frames you want to render, ex. from 1 to 100 :)
thanks,..very usefull !
Thank you for teaching! :)
