My great grandfather died on the Alpine front in 1915. I love Sabaton and I'm really glad that you dedicated a song to those who fought in these dreadful conditions.
In 2014, the remains of two Austrian soldiers were found in the Alps of northern Italy. The following year, an Italian, thought to have died in 1915, was found. While their names are unknown, there are efforts to identify them. While they don't have names as of yet, they are going home.
This song got me emotional. I lost a dear friend of mine who loved you guys and got me in to your music. He left one cold November morning for work and never came home due to a truck driver that wasn’t watching where he was going. When I saw the end of the official video with the grave I got really emotional. He would have loved this song.
If not for Sabaton, there would be so many stories from history I would never have heard of. And that's what makes Sabaton so amazing: They don't just spread great music, they spread knowledge and tell stories!
I guess you can say that they do a better job of being history teachers them selvs compared to a normal boring history teacher if schools wanna teach kids about history perhaps do it through music as music is extremly popular in it self and can be used as a learing tool wich baisicly what sabaton has proven i lever listen to my history teacher back in school because the normal way was just so boring but untill i discoverd sabaton i now became more intrested in history more than ever and thats all thanks to them
@@nexorider17 I've had pretty good history teachers that have been willing and able to make things engaging for students (like me) who are actively interested in it, but Sabaton has a uniquely wide reach and broad topical base.
The reason people don't hear the stories is because teachers stopped teaching about them. We have to have little Johnny wearing a dress shoved down our throats instead.
INTRESTING FACT: The austrian chief of staff decided to send many hungarian soliders to the italian front (Isonzo, and the alpine) The hungarian battalions mostly camed from the Hungarian Great plains, like the city of Debrecen and the country side, I read a memory book from a solider who remember that back home the highest point he ever saw was the 1-2 meter tall dirt wall which the rail track was on..... Then they sended them to the 2500+ meter high mountains
what was also very interesting about the alpine front is that the first soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian empire who got there had to go up the mountains to the frontline by day and return down under the cover of night and that over and over again till further reinforcements arrived to make italian spies believe way more soldiers where stationed there then where actually there. The forces that also helped to a great amount where the "Tiroler Standschützen" an armed militia from Tirol that still exists today. the hungarian battailions where sent there because they where available and sadly the specialised alpine troops where stuck on the russian frontline at the beginning.
Yeah... my great grandpa actually fought on the Italian front. He was from the Alföld region, wich is pretty flat. Here is a fact: at the Battle of the Alpines the most KIA men were hungarian. Their graves are in Fiume.
You are the best band of the World! As a Pole I would like to thank you, for singing about Polish history in yours songs! It means a lot to me. You have a lots of important songs about War, about Poland(not only), and about history another countries 👍👍. 🇵🇱🇸🇪
I am from Italy, one of mine great grandfather survived Caporetto battle covering with bodies; tryng to return home, people didn't help him, they were afraid because worms spreaded from his uniform. Another one, wounded and going home, stabbed a comrade in panic in the leg to make him go home with him. Thanks a lot Sabaton, with your songs you make these mine relativaes who fought WWI immortal. You make agreat job, disclosing history with great music. Keep it up!
My great uncle did something similar. He escaped a Nazi POW camp by pretending to be dead under a pile of bodies. They threw him in the rail car and then on their stop, they threw him out. He ran to an embassy, if I remember correctly. I never got to hear the story firsthand. Little did he know, his cousin would've liberated him in three days if he would've stayed.
I'm guessing it's based on the old saying: "only the dead have seen the end of war." The frozen dead in the Alpine ice watched the war for years after it ended for them, keeping silent vigil over the killing they were no longer part of.
Look. At. That. Sabatons music isn’t just absolute music gold, it’s educational too! I didn’t know about white Friday until I heard this song, and I got details from this song and after finishing it I did research on white Friday, thanks sabaton for telling us the tales that our attention couldn’t be further from in the classroom, in a heavy and metallic way.
Lets just hope they make a mini animated video, that tells the history of this song. As judging by their playlists they only have 3 songs, with an educational animation video.
It was on these battlefields that my great-grandfathers and their brothers died. In total, 7 of my immediate family died. Although they were Czechs, they kept their oath to the Emperor, for that I respect them immensely, a good man should always keep his word. Thank you for a powerful song.
My grandmother's older brother died a week before Armistice. Before she was even born. I still have his picture. His name was Otto. A man from a German-Czech town in the US. Even as they were being persecuted due to being from the lands of "The Hun" they still did their duty.
@@NodDisciple1 He must have had a difficult time with these roots, but it is amazing that he served his country despite the way he was treated. A true man.
I remember an article, in the newspaper, a few years ago : in the Alps, a group of tourists had found two bodies, frozen to death, a man and a woman. The autorities thought they were tourists, that were recently gone missing. Yet, when they found their ID papers, it happened that these two were... a German soldier from WW2, and his lover. The military confirmed this private went missing during a permission, and was never seen eversince. The autorities, then, were able to find his grand-grand-nephews and nieces, and told them their great-great uncle have been found.
Likewise. The music, the vocals and the lyrics, they all just flow so... elegantly. Perhaps even uniquely so for a Sabaton song. Definitely one of the greats.
Well, I know, with being 53 years old, I am surely a metal-fossil - but Sabaton is givin' me sooo much positive vibes. Though I know, that their war-themes are not easy for everyone for sure - but they do so much intense lyrics with historical correctness and they know how to combining coool metal-rhythms with power ... it's just incredible for me :-) So, all the best wishes to the band and the crew - keep goin' your way - it is such a great pleasure to listen and to watch! All the best from germany, :-) I just pre-ordered the album today, and I am am really excited about it :-)
Well..Im 56 so we can form a senior battallion.... :). Ive always been a hardrocker but kind of lost interest in music for a few years (kids and all that). Then my son re-introduced me to metal through Sabaton and Nightwish and its really been a life changer. Rock on \m/ :)
Wanna know something sad. When they say they will be immortally bound to the mountain, they mean it, as the bodies of those soldiers that died on those mountains are still there perfectly preserved as the height and ice keeps them from decomposing.
@@mikoto7693 It’s just hard to imagine 7,000 (I think) men. They were sons, brothers, husbands, fathers, uncles, and friends. Many of them couldn’t even be confirmed dead, and were written down as missing or presumed dead. I can only imagine what it was like for the families waiting back home for a soldier that would never return.
Sabaton has such an incredible ability to create songs that are musically upbeat and a joy to listen to, yet at the same time incredibly somber and sad in their lyrical content. Head banging while tears stream down my cheeks is something no other band can make me do.
It's yet another beautiful song all the same. Just like the rest of Sabaton's songs. They all have the ability to stir up a barrage of emotions.....from sadness to anger to pure love and respect at the freedoms those brave men and women gave their lives to pass on. I remember tracing one of my family tree back to my great grandad. He took a bullet to the throat, all while dragging his wounded comrade back to the trenches. Both lives were saved, although my great grandad was quite funny when he wanted to tell my dad off. He had his voice box removed, so he could only whisper to people when he was angry with them. If you can imagine a man with the usual angry facial expressions and just as you think he's about to yell at you, out comes a pathetic little whisper LOL. BTW my great grandad was the inspiration for me to carry on as normal until I absolutely have to be carried out to the A&E unit (which is our county 10-30 mile-from here local, but is going to be shut down, so anyone with an emergency case will have to go 50 mile down the road.......by which time they may well be dead by then). It's f**king stupid. In Wales, our equivalent to your Commonwealth (so Canada, NZ, Australia etc) PM is our First Minister Mark Drakeford.......so your FM would be Scott Morrison, then there would be the MP's for the different regions. Where you would have Dan Slick-Back-No-Balls for the state of Victoria etc, We'd have Stephen Crabb (MP for Preseli-Pembrokeshire, in the UK). A good looking face, but totally of no substance when it comes to working for the people. Substance is the key. If I was an MP, I'd only be taking my expenses......not my salary, and definitely not the amount it would take to have me in the HoC (House of Commons). As you can gather, the HoL would mean the House of Lords. There's only a very elite few I would consider as worthy as holding the position of the title.
That is absolutely how I feel. This song takes me from the absolute heights of emotion to the depths of emotion. I want to cry for the loss and celebrate for the eternal glory they achieved.
@@robertbruce601 I understand that. A part of me is sad that they died up there and can never be brought home for a proper sendoff. And yet another part of me feels there is a sort of poetic honour for the soldiers that were loyal and tough enough to travel somewhere so remote and inhospitable for their country now rest beyond the reach of the living.
I always come back to this song, theres so much humanity in the lyrics. One mans thoughts before his death far from home, I hope he found peace at the end.
As a descendant of a soldier who fought in the front through the alps, thank you for singing about this. The conditions are still fresh in our minds(my ancestor fought on the Austro-Hungarian side as we're from Slovenia). The conditions were impossible and the artillery strikes commonly triggered snow avalanches which covered many soldiers from both sides. It was so terrible that if I remember correctly they seized fighting just so no one would be lost in them. Digging trences into hard rock was hard work.
“To be truly immortal is not to live forever, but to always be present within the thoughts of men” - Heinrich Himmler, 1927 I’m honestly surprised a man so… evil could utter a quote so majestic. Shows how many were before the rise of Hitler.
Same with "death of a individual is tragedy, death of a milion is a statistic" quote by Stalin. Who and when said it is important, but actuall meaning behind the words is what give them staying power.
I hate that I never knew about White Friday until this song, but then again, Sabaton also taught me about White Death, Castle Itter, Carolus Rex and gave my a deeper appreciation for the Christmas Truce
I hope my headphones aren't going to get bored of this song anytime soon.. been playing at least 20 times in the last 2 days XD the lyrics, the Melody , and the Message within the song is just amazing :)
Thank you Sabaton. Cannot describe how much this means to me. I live in the Dolomites in a town that is just at the bottom of the valley between mt. Marmolada (where White friday happened) and mt. Col di Lana ( The Mountain of Blood) and I grew up listening my greatgrandfathers stories about this war, this place is heaven as much as it could be hell. "Fun fact" some years after the war the Mountain of Blood was found with a cross shaped cloud on it, you can look the photo online.
5/10 This sounds like any Sabaton song.. Nothing new! i was excited but nope... Its true! If you heard one song! You literally heard all. I mean Any band can make this song

Im a 20 year old proud Italian American and I most definitely am not the first one to share this detail, but my great great grandfather served on the alpine front, never met him, but I know what he did. Thank you

Not wanting to share what he was forced to see and do .. he took the secrets to his grave ... War is terrible ...
I like this song because it doesn't choose any side it just shows of the tragedy to all troops that died in the ruthless alpine winter during one of the greatest wars in human history to date
Hi, guys! This song made me cry! Especially when you realize that the poor bastards who died on the Alps have never been completely recovered & will be trapped there for practically ETERNITY! THANKS AGAIN, SABATON, FOR THIS WONDERFUL SONG! If you're up for requests, then may I request you make a song about the 10th Battalion Combat Team of the Philippine Expeditionary Force TO Korea (PEFTOK) & their participation in the Battle of Yultong during the 1950-1953 Korean War? If you look it up on RUclips, I'm pretty sure you'll find lots of INTERESTING material for your next song! I mean, you guys did 2 songs about Japan, right? Why not the Philippines next? Anyway, I'll leave it up to you guys because I honor & respect your choices & skills A LOT! SABATON & METAL FOREVER! LOVE FROM THE PHILIPPINES!
How about the peace in mindanao to occur today... Its better to promote peace in that region of Philippines... Especially that Filipino are fond of music and love to sing in a karaoke
I truly hope Sabaton does a song about the 100th Battalion/442nd Infantry division, an all Japanese-American segregated unit. The 100th was composed almost entirely of Nisei, 2nd generation Japanese-Americans from Hawaii who jumped at the opportunity to prove their loyalty, with one of their official mottos being "Remember Pearl Harbor". I mention them here because, due to suspicion of their loyalties, they were deployed primarily in the European theater, (mainly the mountains of Italy) with one of their most famous exploits being their capture of Monte Cassino after being ordered on what was effectively a suicide mission, then the rescue of the Texan "Lost Battalion" where they lost several men for each man they ultimately rescued. Last I checked, the 100th remains the most decorated unit in US military history, largely due to so many purple hearts being issued to men used as cannon fodder.
Sabaton was my introduction to metal and I have no regrets because now I have come across some great bands like Nightwish, Amaranthe, Beast in Black. Sabaton still stands as the best in my book though.
The war in the alps was exceptionally brutal when it’s freezing cold ad at any time a shell could start an avalanche, plus the rocks would splinter from gunfire causing more shrapnel being flung in the air. To this day there are men still frozen from the avalanches up in those mountains. This is a really great song also love the retro sound they were going for, great job as always Sabaton!!!
War Causes Pain pain knows no borders Heroes and Vets all side bring it home those left in the snow will haunt eternity until the final journey beckons and the light welcomes one home
The alpine Front was bloody, literal mountains were reduced to ashes, 9 battles over Isonzo with little to no advance... My family has italian origins. VIVA ITALIA
While based on a specific event, without context, it seems a song about those soldiers from all nations and country who perished, or never returned home. War is a cruel thing, and, with little exception, those who died fighting them did not deserve their lives divorced from the earth. Let all those who have fought with honor and dignity find a measure of harmony in their rest forevermore, and their spirits make peace among all others who have passed in the line of duty, regardless of the banners and borders that once divided them in the life that came before.
Greetings from distant Bulgaria. And in the new 2022, again you guys are at the highest level! We can't wait to hear the song dedicated to Bulgaria. Bulgaria carries you in its heart.
Beautiful song And message as always, I respect much you and your music and as an Italian I thank you for have spoken of all those heroes who fought in the Alps and could not even receive a burial, of all nations
@@twilightparanormalresearch186 well, they weren't just Austrians. Slovenes, Hungarians, Croats and more were present! My ancestor who was part of the Slovene troops sent to the front was there. For Slovenes it was different than just being sent to fight for a land who didn't even belong to him. The front with the Italians was directly aiming for Slovenia and so our troops were extremely bloodthirsty and desperate. Seriously I'm glad both Slovenia and Italy are EU members together now. We can leave behind a feud which some people still insist to continue over the city of Trieste and things that happend decades ago.

It's believed that over 10,000 people (mostly Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers) died from avalanches in the Alps in the month of December 1916, with 2,000 deaths on White Friday alone. Sabaton brings so many forgotten stories and the soldiers involved back into the light where they belong. This is a fantastic tribute to soldiers who endured the closest thing possible to a frozen hell.
for some reason this gives me more immortal vibes than Unkillable Soldier probably because of the lines about seeing it all and being frozen in time but yeah this gives me the image of an immortal man who has been around for centuries or millennia and has been through many a war
Im italian and I go to the alps every year, they are absolutely BEAUTIFUL, so I appreciate the sacrifices that my ancestors made to gain those mountains. Its a shame most of my people have forgotten them.
Thank you for the songs that you produce. When we forget those who have fought on either side of a conflict, we do ourselves a disservice as well as cheapening the ideals that good men and women have laid down their lives for. War should always be a last resort. After it is necessary, however, then we shame ourselves if we forget those who stood the line.
Great song on a little known topic. On the topic of last stands, I'd love a song on the battle of Saragarhi. 21 Sikhs held back 10,000 Afghans and killed 600 before being killed, in a defiant last stand that bought time for the nearby forts to reinforce and prepare for the attack. The only battle in history where every combatant on one side received the highest possible commendation for valour, the Indian Order of Merit.
The crazy thing is that the alps have such a rich history of combat that this song doesn’t only tell the tale of a soldier from WWI. Perhaps it can even be thought of as a story from the view from one of Hannibal’s soldiers who made the dangerous journey over 2,000 years ago…still entombed high up in the ice
I love how when I listen to almost any of Sabaton songs, I get this strange awe inspiring feeling, mixed with both hope and fear… like my bottom lip goes numb, as if I’m about to cry, but I also can’t help but smile for some reason. Especially if I read or know the lyrics. This is very concerning, cause I must listen to them again and again to get that feeling ❤
When I first was introduced to Sabaton the first song I was exposed to was this song, The Soldier of Heaven, and I can’t even get enough of this song, also every Memorial Day I salute and honor the heroes of the Alpine Warfront who never came home to their loved ones.
Without a doubt, you guys are the bards of the 21st century. Singing tales of great heroes from ages past and telling stories that need to be remembered... And judging by some of the wild, amazing, and tragic stories you already dug up... I look forward to seeing if you give WWI as many albums and songs as you gave WWII. So many stories to tell that just get glossed over...
Another badass song! I love your style of basically giving a history lesson on battles through music. My late grandfather was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in ww2 because when he and his men were approaching Luxembourg and disarming land mines (he was a combat engineer), the mounds of what they thought was just ground turned out to be nazi bunkers. Nazis opened up on him and his men and they all took cover but he knew they had to move so he ran towards the bunkers and tossed his grenades in and killed the nazis. He told my mom he isn’t worth of the Distinguished Service Cross because he lost a 3rd of his Platoon that day. He was a First Lieutenant in the 135th combat battalion.
I am a history enthusiast, anything related to both world wars excites me, but finding music dedicated to those brave souls lost while protecting their country and ideas, telling stories that were unknown for me; it’s the best feeling ever!! thanks to Sabaton for not letting their legacy be forgotten by history and being the coolest history teacher ever!

Absolutely phenomenal, never did i think a song could bring me to tears❤
I remember an article, in the newspaper, a few years ago : in the Alps, a group of tourists had found two bodies, frozen to death, a man and a woman. The autorities thought they were tourists, that were recently gone missing. Yet, when they found their ID papers, it happened that these two were... a German soldier from WW2, and his lover. The military confirmed this private went missing during a permission, and was never seen eversince. The autorities, then, were able to find his grand-grand-nephews and nieces, and told them their great-great uncle have been found.
This is quickly becoming one of my favourite sabaton songs
Mine too!
Likewise. The music, the vocals and the lyrics, they all just flow so... elegantly. Perhaps even uniquely so for a Sabaton song. Definitely one of the greats.

The line, "I saw the end of war," always sends chills up my spine. Only the dead have seen the end of war.
@@Sabaton Wouldnt a song about Emerentia Krakow be really awesome?.. :)
Wanna know something sad.
When they say they will be immortally bound to the mountain, they mean it, as the bodies of those soldiers that died on those mountains are still there perfectly preserved as the height and ice keeps them from decomposing.
And it’s almost impossible to even reach them, let alone try to recover them. They stand as silent guardians on the mountain, forever at their post.
Forever bound to keep watch for an enemy that no longer exists.
Sabaton has such an incredible ability to create songs that are musically upbeat and a joy to listen to, yet at the same time incredibly somber and sad in their lyrical content. Head banging while tears stream down my cheeks is something no other band can make me do.
We appreciate this very much, thank you for sharing it
It's yet another beautiful song all the same.
Yeah, especially songs like "Cliffs of Galipolli" or "A Lifetime of War" (especially in Swedish).
“To be truly immortal is not to live forever, but to always be present within the thoughts of men” - Heinrich Himmler, 1927
I’m honestly surprised a man so… evil could utter a quote so majestic. Shows how many were before the rise of Hitler.
You shouldn't be surprised. This is a sentiment that has existed and been expressed for thousands of years.
Same with "death of a individual is tragedy, death of a milion is a statistic" quote by Stalin. Who and when said it is important, but actuall meaning behind the words is what give them staying power.
Well, he himself DID remain present within the thoughts of men, and for the worse possible fucking reasons...

Sabaton get better the more I listen to them age like a fine wine. You guys are badass
It's our pleasure to have you Leland
The war in the alps was exceptionally brutal when it’s freezing cold ad at any time a shell could start an avalanche, plus the rocks would splinter from gunfire causing more shrapnel being flung in the air.

It's believed that over 10,000 people (mostly Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers) died from avalanches in the Alps in the month of December 1916, with 2,000 deaths on White Friday alone.
