Skip to 0:30 if you don't want to watch my Blade Runner fan film. ALSO I just found out that there is a lens hood made specifically for this lens. It's square and vented! Check the description for a link.
I love your intro, i love the music and i love the fact that you add grain to your photos which honestly look so darn good. Every other youtuber is preaching on making the cleanest most crisp image while you, ma man you're on that real tip. Thanks for the content.
I just bought this lens to use on my X-T4! I absolutely loved your images. I was torn between this and the 27mm 2.8, but a 2.8 max aperture did not seem to be the best choice for me. So, I chose this. I am hoping that I will love it.
Totally digging the vibe! Combining my two favorite things; scifi and photography lol. And the content is great, highly, highly considering this lens especially since every other 28mm for an M8 is just as expensive or more expensive
The problem with recent Chinese lenses is that the elements are usually not fully coated, especially the ones inside, causing them to flare much more easily and most importantly, the actual light transmission is much lower than the F value, which is not much of a problem for digital users or people using for bokeh, but a huge deal for film shooters where we can't bump up the ISO and risk severe color shifts when underexposing. I didn't get to try this 28 1.4 yet, but the mitakon 50 0.95 has a t value of almost 1.4, whereas the Leica Noct. is at 0.98 and the f1 version is at 1.05, thats a huge deal for film shooting. Which I cannot blame them as the optical quality is usually great for the price and coating all the elements both sides will yield a much higher price, but it's something one should consider before buying, btw some modern Voigtlanders have similar problems
yea would love to know that information. I recommend just taking a shot at 1.4 with the 7 artisans and switching to a modern summilux whatever focal length and take some shots in between 1.4 - 2 with the exact same scene, preferably indoors at night. match the exposure level closest to Leica's f stop and add 0.05 or so, should be close enough to the t stop. I'd do it on digital though as scanners can have mandatory compensations on exposures.@@GxAce
Just got this lens. It looks and feels surprisingly a lot like a Leica lens. Image quality of course not the same but it's probably 80% there for way less cost.
I agree. Fantastic lens. Have it since december 2018. Really really good. I am glad to pay more.. i paid 640,- euro in the Netherlands. I haven’t try the 50mm f1.1, but that lens looks more toy-ish with the weird bokeh. Hope they make a superfast 35mm with this quality and with rangefinder coupling in future. The only small drawback is the lensglare if you have lightobjects in your frame like a lamp... but i can live with that
Thanks for the video. If I did not already have a 35mm f/1.4 and a 21mm f/1.4 for my Leica M6 and M10 rangefinders, I would be very interested in buying the 7Artisan's 28mm f/1.4 wide-angle lens.
I came to watch the video again since there's been a while since you posted last one. The intro, b roll and music impressed me as much as first time! You have a unique style, if you keep uploading videos Im sure you'll have a tone of subs eventually

I purchased a used 8 MP Pentax Optio E40 yesterday. I was blown away at the quality of photos it takes. Just saying. You don't have to spend big money to get good pictures.
The 7 Artisans is a surprisingly good lens for the price but wide open, especially at close distances it is not nearly as good as the 28 Summilux. Softer in the corners and more vignetting. At F2 it does not have the resolving power of my 28 ASPH Summicron-M, especially noticeable on my 41MP M10-R but on film, you would never notice the difference. The extra stop is particularly useful on film where unlike digital, you cannot suddenly jack up the ISO. The 7 Artisans is probably better screwed together than my 28 ASPH Summicron, which has gone off yet again for rectification of the notorious loose front section and I don't even use the big rectangular Leica lens shade, which is the usual reason for the front section coming loose. I have three fast Chinese M mount lenses, the 28/1.4, the 21/1.5 and the 75/1.25. The 28 is by some margin the best of these lenses, with the 21 second and the 75 a fair bit back. The latter is very soft wide open.
There is definitely a lot of variation between copies of the lenses in terms of sharpness. I would approach these lenses as if they were pre-computer manufacturing and you had to search to find the perfect copy.
@@GxAce Sadly that also applies to Leica lenses. I searched for 6 months for a really good 35mm/f1.4 ASPH Summilux. I only looked at chrome/brass ones, as they have a far better reputation than the black alloy versions. I eventually found one that had minimal aperture shift and have over the years, turned down offers of up to 4 times what I paid for it. I had one dreadful 50 Summicron V and one indifferent one. I now have one of the Special Edition chrome/LTM Summicron V's and it is very good. Two new Leica lenses, a 50/0.95 Noctilux and a 35/2 Summicron ASPH, had to go straight back to the factory for rectification.
Hi GxAce, love your voice. Perfect to listen to, relaxed but interesting. I would believe anything that you say (almost :) I purchased a China built lens for my OM-D E-M10 2 for some fun and I was made to look a fool. Pergerr 35mm f 1.16. It came with a lens hood and built like a T-34. Very sharp and also perfect for street photography. Love your work from NZ.
7Artisans are clearly a group of Leica geeks that are trying to make their own lenses to use on their cameras. That is the type of people I want making lenses ;)
GxAce Hi, superb video! M mount lens On your XT3? Could you let us know what adapter brand you use? (I hear Fuji has a dedicated M mount adapter...). Thanks.
Kirk McCormack I’m using the Haoge Macro Focus adapter. It lets you focus the lens closer than the minimum distance while still allowing infinity focus. I wish the Fuji adapter did that since that adapter has a button to bring up the focal length setting in the menu. I use these macro adapters on my A7s as well. They are the best adapter in my opinion because they make the lenses more versatile.
I thought you had at least 100,000 subs while I was watching your video. Very good production and informative content, I really hope that your channel will get more attention in the future because it certainly deserves it!
Since you are a Leica user I can understand your photo style... I wish to see more the 'sooc' type of thing, to have a feel how the character of lens really is... The photos are green-brownish, even on Fuji I wish to see more sharpness of the results... more daily photos with sunlights (less dark photos and post-pro) would tell more about the lens.... Your review is helpful, but I think it was too personal to your taste... Btw I use Sony and voigtlander.
This is very true! I will try to figure out a good balance between my style and a more unbiased look at the lens performance. I like to see what the lens is capable of producing and less of a baseline image, but I can see a benefit to that! thanks!
You have an awesome sci-fi cinematic feel to this video which I love. The intro was fantastic. I’ll have to check out your other videos. Fantastic review, I’m very interested. Thank you 👍
Love the review however I do wonder why you didn't also refer to Laowa when mentioning Chinese manufacturers that are NOT just trying to just put out cheap lenses. Living in China I've bought a few Laowa and also tried out the 7A 12/2.8 (APSC lens) on the full frame Sonys. You do have to crop it to remove the heavy vignetting (so more like a 15-16mm) but for around US$100 it's fun to play around with. However Laowa's FF 10-18 is an awesome lens with minimal vignetting that blows it away (big price difference of course). Some really really interesting lenses coming out from Laowa and 7A and all seem to be beautifully built.
I didn't refer to them only because it slipped my mind at the time! Laowa is great and definitely one of the Chinese brands that are pushing the envelope more than most US companies!
@@GxAce I actually sold the Laowa 10-18 and bought the Laowa 12/2.8, plus the Laowa Shift adapter, to convert it into a 17/4 shift lens. To my mind it's even better than the 10-18, more flexible (adding Shift for architecture) and sharper right to the edges/corners. Superb lens and by far most used on a one month European/Abu Dhabi trip I've just returned from. Love to see you review that one ;)
@@GxAce pretty good! NYC has been a wild adjustment from lansing lol but have gotten to work on some pretty cool projects here. Was playing with the XT-3 a little at B&H and Adorama here I just didn't like the feel of some of the focus-by-wire Fuji lenses I tried with it. Do you have any favorite lenses for it so far? I'll probably adapt my m42 glass to it, (finally got the Jupiter-9 to complete that set), just thinking of getting 1-2 actually modern and sharp lenses with it if I need to do client work with it.
Yes! B-roll video! Cant wait - drone one afterwards? Also, in your final talking to camera clip at the end you zoom out to reveal some super close foreground elements. Were all the talking shots in this set up? Either way loved that little bit, like most of the stuff on your channel normal things done very well but then with a final twist to really top it off and put you way ahead of the pack. Thanks for putting the time into making these videos.
I was thinking of making a drone video but not sure how to structure it. I got a decent amount of drone shots in China. I have the camera on a motorized slider and it pushes in at the beginning and slides out at the end. It’s going to turn even more sci-fi in the future for really no reason other than I like sci-fi hahahah. Thanks for watching!
@@GxAce For someone who is from the flat & boring part of Europe simple snaps of China are already interesting, but your Blade Runner edit just takes things to the next level.
On a rangefinder the lens is focused mechanically. Inside of the viewfinder on a range finder is a small box that moves when you move the focus on the lens.
@@GxAce I kinda understand now! thx for the reply! (btw the meike 25mm f1.8 seems cool as well, if you wanna make another video on cheap&good Chinese lenses, might be an interesting choice
Got one, put it on a GFX50R... love the look, like hell yeah, but that minimum focus at .8meters is sooooo frustrating... Doesn't want to carry around diopters for photos :(
@@GxAce Don't - this is a really neat motif for your channel. It literally looks like you live in a spaceship. Keep it that way. Especially, with the subtle blade runner references. No other photography u-tuber is dong this.
Lol I have 3 of their lenses now for different systems, all fun ones. This 28 M, the 35mm for Z and a Fisheye! Great performance for price and are a pleasure to use
Interesting. Why do you not mention the 28mm Summicron? It's a fabulous lens and a lot lighter/ cheaper than the 'Lux. But yes, 28mm is a fantastic focal length.
I know it’s just a small clip but 2:38-2:43 is 🔥👌🏼 Question, what adapter do you like when using this with your Sony? I would love to pick this up for my A7iii as a daily carry (I don’t mind the weight). Thanks and keep up the ace work!
Thanks!! I use the m-mount macro adapters. I don’t recall the brand mine is off the top of my head but if you search m-mount close focus adapter you should find it. It lets you use the lens normally but it also has a focusing helicoil that allows it to be focused closer. It’s pretty awesome and makes every m-mount lens better.
Jaja I love your blade runner fan film intro. I am looking for a 28mm for my zeiss ikon zm and this might be a good choice... Very good video and photos. 👍
Do you have any experience with the Mitakon 50mm 0.95? I absolutely love that lens and I’m looking for a good wide angle FF counterpart for it. This lens seems like a good option. I want something that has character but sharpness and vintage aesthetics.
I usually do a little correcton to film that I get back but I didn't actually do anything to these photos. I lowered the highlights on a couple of them but for the most part they are straight from the scanner at BlackBox in Ningbo, China. I do adjust the color on the shots taken with the Fuji and the Sony however.
Once again an amazing production video. Love the blade runner style theme a lot. Favourite shot at 0:15 and favourite photo at 9:01, beautiful composition. All the best from Germany! Btw, where did you get the music from?
Thanks a ton for the info. Btw. looking at your color grading I've been wondering whether you've tried shooting with the Cinestill 800T film. I had the pleasure of trying it out in Hongkong as part of bigheadtaco's shootout challenge and loved it especially because of the scifi vibes it adds... not to mention the red highlight halos. Highly recommend to give it a go. @@GxAce
@@ChannelRejss Actually the last time I was in China all I shot was CineStill! I actually bought some re-rolled Kodak Vision 3 500T while I was there this time. Its the same film as cinestill but doesnt give the red halos and needs to be developed in ECN2 process
@@GxAce Ah, great! I wouldn't shoot Cinestill on a regular basis because I find it too stylized for my liking and kinda boring for the scenery of where I live. In those huge asian alpha cities however it's actually fun to apply that style... a more illustrative approach.
For the drone footage at the beginning it’s just that the low light on the Mavic Air is terrible. For the photos that grain effect is called analog film ;). No filter applied just pure chemical reaction of silver halide crystals.
GxAce, you got my thumbs up for just the intro. I love how you did this review, and I'm totaly into the retrovibe so you got me as a follower just for the looks of the video. Second of all you did a great job offering more then just one camera sample, using Sony, Leica and Fuji makes me see you're a gearoholic, but in a good way I mean, because you use different cameras you're not stuck with just one brand. Thats why there is one thing that I want to ask you, because you said that size does matter, would you still recommand it for a small leica set-up, like a small messenger bag with 3 lenses, will you pick this one to take with you, next of a small 35mm 1.4 voigtlander and a 50mm summarit?
Hey, thanks a lot for the kind words and the sub! I'm glad you enjoy the style too! I have very specific needs for the weight of my camera/lens setup and prefer to have the smallest lightest possible. This 28mm lens is amazing but its a little too heavy for me to want to bring everywhere, but I think I prefer stuff that is smaller and lighter than most people would. I actually have a summarit and a 35 1.4 voigtlander and I dont think its too crazy of a weight to carry for a while (I was carrying a similar amount around China. But if I really want to feel free and just go with one lens, I'd just take the 35 1.4 or even my voigtlander 21mm f4. The lens isn't super huge, its just really dense.
Thats just what I wanted to know, thanks! I already own the 35mm, so I want all my lenses to be simmular or close in size to that one, and it made me looking for a 21mm instead. I also like to pick the smallest lens possible and was looking to close the gap between my 15mm and 35mm, and the 28mm Elmarit is too expensive for my "Fun" camera.
Finally watched blade runner 2049 and this was the next video I watched. Great production keep it up! Really interested in this lens, but I'm unsure with it blocking part of the viewfinder and I'll need an external 28mm viewfinder for my M3
Yeah, definitely would need an external viewfinder. But! If you are using an external finder, I’m sure it wouldn’t block any of that since the finder is so high up! Doesn’t matter in that case if it’s blocking the m3’s finder since you only need to use it for the focusing patch.
Hey, love the production quality! I have a few questions about the lens: Would it work with .85 M6? I see you have a photo shot by XT-3, would it work with the Fuji lens adapter? Thanks! P.S. Hope you like your trip to China
Thank you very much! This was my second time to China. I was in 宁波. It will work on a .85 m6 but that version does not have frames lines for 28mm so you would need a external viewfinder or just guess what the frame would be. I was shooting it on the XT3 with an m-mount adapter.
I love how extra your video style is. I wish I could get a 28mm equiv on aps-c at f/1.4. I ain’t ready to buy back into sony yet. Did you ever use the Voigtlander 40mm f/1.4 SC on full frame? It would hit the same range as this does on the X-T3. And what about the XF 18mm f/2 on the X-T3? I’ve heard bad things, but idk.
Thank you! Yeah that equiv focal length would be cool to have, especially with auto focus. I have heard mixed things about the 18mm. I picked up the 16mm recently and that lens is amazing. I have not tried the 40mm 1.4, but I have their 35.
GxAce I’m big on the Ghost in the Shell animated films, and your style is on point for that vibe. The music even has those Trent Reznor/Atticus Ross tones that make me want to front a revolution against corporate corruption in a dystopian neo-metropolis. Plus the 21:9-ish crops. I don’t know if that’s the reason why I want to get back into 28mm. Nice creative vision, my dude. 👌
のぢGrey hahah. That’s awesome. Ghost in the Shell is an awesome show/movie/manga. Definitely an inspiration. My channel is only going to get more cyberpunk so stick around. I’m in the process of building something really cool and extremely pointless but I think it will be fun hahaa
What lighting setup did you have for this? Getting my Fuji soon and will be getting the 18-55 for handheld video work, 23 f2 and the 56 1.2 for portraiture and detailed close-ups etc... What else would you recommend?
You can check out this video to see how I lit the shots for this video: ruclips.net/video/OKD2z31dYIc/видео.html I love the 16mm 1.4 because I love being able to get a wide shot that also has some shallow depth of field, similar to this 28mm on full frame.

It´s a wonderful shot. Mavic Air right? So the Drone had no issues cause it was so dark? Or did you darken in post?
These were darkened in post. The low light on the mavic air is pretty bad.

I love Laowa! I have never actually used one of their lenses but they are another awesome company that is pushing the envelope!
You have an awesome sci-fi cinematic feel to this video which I love. The intro was fantastic. I’ll have to check out your other videos. Fantastic review, I’m very interested. Thank you 👍
I’m glad you enjoy it! I love sci-fi and cant help but want to make things that look sci fi ;). My Instagram account has a lot of sci-fi-esque images.
Love to see you review that one ;)
amazing production, very unique. Great insights and a pleasure to watch!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video!! Thanks for the kind words :)
This is dope! The X-T3 footage looks incredible, so close to just pulling the trigger on one soon lol
Hey thanks dude!! The xt3 is seriously amazing. The video quality destroys the Sony cameras at the moment. How you been doing?
When you say Kodak Plus, is that Color Plus?
Yup! Color plus!
How did you manage to make this aerial footage look so good
China helps a lot. It already looks so cool ;)
@@GxAce Did you fly during night time though?
These shots were just after golden hour!
Should I get this over the Volgtlander Nokton classic 35f1.4 II MC for my FIRST Leica Lens?
It was my first Leica lens!
Holy fuck, that intro was insane! I immediately thought of _Blade Runner_ .
Thanks! Hahaha. China looks so cool. I couldn’t help myself.
Loved the intro 😤 Did you notice any decentering issues with this lens?
Thanks! No decentering issues here!
those drone shots are stunning!
Thank you so much! Its hard to make China not look cool! hahah
@@GxAce For someone who is from the flat & boring part of Europe simple snaps of China are already interesting, but your Blade Runner edit just takes things to the next level.
the intro it self convinced me to subscribe to you. great content
Thanks for the sub!!
Did you have to adjust any of the 7artisans lenses? It’s my only hold back from getting some of their lenses
I had to adjust both the 35 and 28 but it takes 2 seconds and requires you to loosen two screws! I believe in you! You can do it!
Dude! Your videos rock so hard! I am speechless!!
Awesome video. Great composition, perfect light and stunning music. And oh yes, the lens is interesting, too :-)
Hahahah. Thank you!! I get carried away with the production sometimes.
I’ve never used a rangefinder (but I have fuji x100s and x-pro2) but how do you focus this lens? I thought an EVF is necessary
Another great video - I looked at this lens but just thought it was too heavy - I got the Canon Ltm 28mm 2.8 instead - no where near as sharp but tiny
Thank you! Yeah, like I said in the video, this is really the only downside for me of this lens. Its fantastic, just a bit heavy.
Got one, put it on a GFX50R... love the look, like hell yeah, but that minimum focus at .8meters is sooooo frustrating... Doesn't want to carry around diopters for photos :(
Was wondering on the details of your background? it looks so sick!
It's embarrassingly low budget hahahah. I might make a video on it soon,
@@GxAce Don't - this is a really neat motif for your channel. It literally looks like you live in a spaceship. Keep it that way. Especially, with the subtle blade runner references. No other photography u-tuber is dong this.
Yesss most definitely would love to see more about it :o or even just a picture of it hahah its sooooo future-vibe and i dig it
Alanpods ______ it’s gonna get even more needlessly cyberpunk in the future hahah.
Lol I have 3 of their lenses now for different systems, all fun ones. This 28 M, the 35mm for Z and a Fisheye! Great performance for price and are a pleasure to use
What part of China did you travel to? It looks like you travel back in time to me..
I was in Ningbo! Yeah I do like to find the older parts of the city, it’s much more fun to explore :)
I keep saying it, stop showing off with those epic videography skills hahaha, lens seems pretty epic for that price man
Hahaha. Thanks my dude. It really did surprise me, I just wish it were a little lighter.
Super interesting. Kodak Plus? Is it Kodak Color Plus 200? Thanks and greetz
Indeed it is! Thanks for watching!
@@GxAce did you push the film or is this at 200 Asa?
terancepickles this was all shot at 200.
Epic outro can’t wait till the movie
Me neither ;)
Interesting. Why do you not mention the 28mm Summicron? It's a fabulous lens and a lot lighter/ cheaper than the 'Lux. But yes, 28mm is a fantastic focal length.
I wanted to try to mention the 1.4 alternatives but Voigtlander only has the f2.
GxAce Awsome, thanks!
The size makes me keep my 28mm Ultron. Good enough for me.
Fair enough!
Jaja I love your blade runner fan film intro. I am looking for a 28mm for my zeiss ikon zm and this might be a good choice... Very good video and photos. 👍
Thanks Hahahah. Wasn’t intentionally making a fan film but that’s basically what happened hahaha. It’s definitely a good choice!! Just a little heavy
That was very pleasing to watch
Thanks! This was very pleasing to read!
This review was awesome. Loved the Bladerunner vibe.
Thank you!!
Mindblowing Review!
Thanks man.
No questions left - except:
What music did you used??
M.
Thank you! I'll have to get back with you on the track. I honestly don't recall the name!
Would be great. I love it!
@@GxAce Would love to know the name of the track 😅
Do you have any experience with the Mitakon 50mm 0.95? I absolutely love that lens and I’m looking for a good wide angle FF counterpart for it. This lens seems like a good option. I want something that has character but sharpness and vintage aesthetics.
I loved the Blade Runner intro and outro 👍👍😎
nice x-pan style spread, but u do color adjust your film photos right?
I usually do a little correcton to film that I get back but I didn't actually do anything to these photos. I lowered the highlights on a couple of them but for the most part they are straight from the scanner at BlackBox in Ningbo, China. I do adjust the color on the shots taken with the Fuji and the Sony however.
Once again an amazing production video. Love the blade runner style theme a lot. Favourite shot at 0:15 and favourite photo at 9:01, beautiful composition.
All the best from Germany!
Btw, where did you get the music from?
Thank you! I'm a huge blade runner fan! All of the music is from MusicBed.com
In those huge asian alpha cities however it's actually fun to apply that style... a more illustrative approach.
love your work !
Thank you!
Jesus your video is better than a movie😱😱😱
hahaha. Thanks!
I can’t believe you have less than 4k subs, great video
I wish I had more! Hahahah. Thanks for watching!!
What do you use that your pictures have these graining effect? Is it a ND filter? Awesome Blade Runner Intro btw!!!
For the drone footage at the beginning it’s just that the low light on the Mavic Air is terrible. For the photos that grain effect is called analog film ;). No filter applied just pure chemical reaction of silver halide crystals.
@@GxAce haha ^^ not your Leica Samples i mean your sample pictures from your X-T3 they also have a nice look!
Hey man, nice review and shots. I have this lens too and use it on my M10 and M6. Does your M6 have 0.85 magnification?
My m6 has the .72 rangefinder. I don’t think the .85 has lines for 28mm
GxAce Yes exactly. I have 0.85 and just shoot away with 35mm framelines. I’m used to it now :)
Epic video and good information, thank you!
WHAT IS THIS INTRO?!?!?! :O THIS IS SICK!!!
@7:55 was that shot in Ningbo?
Yup! Basically everything in this video was shot in Ningbo ;)
Would you recommend adapting one for the Fuji X system?
Loved the intro. I've never used a 7Artisans lens before. Ill look into them.
Definitely worth the look, especially if you gave an m-mount camera!
Great review! Exactly what I am look for. Liked and subscribed.
Great informative video thanks 🙏🏻
Thanks for watching!
이제까지 봤던 렌즈 리뷰 영상중에 영상미 최고다 너무 잘 찍어서 중국제 렌즈로는 보이질 않네...
고맙습니다!
@@GxAce You speak Korean?!
Hey, love the production quality!
I have a few questions about the lens:
Would it work with .85 M6?
I see you have a photo shot by XT-3, would it work with the Fuji lens adapter?
Thanks!
P.S. Hope you like your trip to China
Thank you very much! This was my second time to China. I was in 宁波.
It will work on a .85 m6 but that version does not have frames lines for 28mm so you would need a external viewfinder or just guess what the frame would be. I was shooting it on the XT3 with an m-mount adapter.
I just found out your channel and I really love it. You have this unique style that I kind of like....kipidap dongibap
Cool video, great review 👍
@@GxAce I subbed. Sometimes the cool and pointless is a stepping stone to the awesome and poignant, so count me in.
Leica actually has 3 options for 28mm and you forgot that Zeiss makes a 28mm lens as well.
Whoops! Good call. Thanks!
