I've lately been devouring videos of stuff from up North. Every time I watch one it helps to motivate me to get things done so I can get back home. I've been in Brissie way too long now. I actually lived and worked at Bloomfield for a while.
In the early 80s I watch two LandCruisers come down your first hill using chains. They rolled from the top with the clutch engaged it in reverse gear. Every time the car started to slide sideways the let the clutch out and the car dragged itself straight again. Most amazing piece of driving I've seen.
I'm a third in and when you said, "I hope there's no more like this..." I laughed. I walked the CREB in the early 80s when the Cairns Regional Electricity board still maintained the lines that ran up there and as a clear example of how harsh it is, the Electricity Board had a WW1 tank about half a km past the Daintree crossing that they used to access it when it was wet. There were also very high catwalks going over a creek crossing and a couple of old fibro building campsites for when they had to stay in there. I was also a passenger in a short wheelbase Landcruiser after some rain around the same time. We spent four hours at one of the last big hills trying to get up it, but ended up turning around and going the long way. I'm heading back up to walk it again in the next couple of years, but I'll pick a dry time. Those hills are just grease in the wet. Thanks, mate. Your video is bringing back some cool memories of my hippy days. EDIT: Back in those days, there were stories of short wheel base 4WDs flipping over backwards when attempting the last big hill after slipping a little.
@@bears2604 Yeah, mate. The huts were basically made of steel, concrete and fibro, the only stuff that could handle the wet and humidity. Fibro pamels were an asbestos mix.
Great video. Man, your 4wd skills, video skills, sound quality, the whole package really is improving exponentially not to mention the fantastic aerial drone work. Your content is as good as any 4wd channel at this stage and I reckon it will surpass most in not too short a time. Thanks for all the hard work. We appreciate it.
Bloody awesome mate, had a smile on my face for the whole video. I think because I could see how much you were enjoying it. You must be so happy with the truck, looks so solid. Can't wait for the rest of the series, great job.
the real locals carry mud chains for both front and rear tyres, with these you are able to drive the track no matter how wet it gets. Swimming hole at the end was the beach area on the Roaring Meg. Average rainfall here on the CREB is 3.5-4 meters/ year
Yeah except for big red thats a scary one even with the chains my pop louie on top of gold hill in the 80s used to have to be in reverse going down big red some wetseasons just so you werent sliding to fast 🤣
Beautiful country but bloody tough going. A credit to you, Steve and MalaKAI for capturing the adventure on cameras. It was more enjoyable because you didn’t cover up the sounds of your cars with senseless music and allowed the engine noises to bring out the suspense of the muddy hill climbs. Cheers guys. 👍🏻🙏🏽😷🦘
You can't beat wheel chains for traction in slippery conditions. Sixty odd years ago my father drove every where in the bush in a 1950s FC Holden panel van, at times with heavy wheel chains fitted to the rear wheels. He drove this vehicle up hill and down hill over unbroken ground that would scare most of today's 4x4 drivers. That Holden was driven to remote locations from FNQ to Victoria to SA on deer hunting trips. The worst thing to happen to the Holden was broken engine mounts which gave him a twenty six mile hike over steep terrain to a station telephone to arrange help. As a young boy I used to rest my feet on a piece of wood about six inches in diameter that had pierced and broken off in the vehicle's passenger seat floor. That wood was jamed so tight it stayed there until the Holden was retired. Cheers
We drove that track in 1991 in an old 2A land rover. No winching, just drove it. It was dry and nowhere near as rutted as this video shows, so much easier than now. Good video.
Wow! Thank you (both) for your tenacity! That is (most likely) the only way that people like me will ever see a track like that. Thanks for sharing Cheers
As a local, snowchains and workboots. I don't do the track without bulk recovery gear wet or dry. Service the winch. Spares for the winch, ie spare solenoid spare rope, even a spare motor if possible. In the dry it's a half day run. In the wet multiple days. Take food and a swag if it's been drizzling to rain.
That was hectic!! Great fun doing it in the dry…that looks next level insanity in the wet! 😲 I think seeing Bob’s Hill again has given my Mrs PTSD. Mud-skating looks like a new Olympic sport. Nice cameo from True North Adventures 👍
We love your vids Tyler, your candour & honesty is a rare thing to see. A lot of people would want to paint a picture of everything going perfect, you & the young bloke give it to us warts & all. The quality of your content is super good. You can be proud of what you're giving us all. ✌
MAAAAATE so appreciate your massive effort to show us that track. holy heck we were riveted and cheering when ya made it to the top. love ya work . Cheers from 2 west aussies in Saudi
I did the creb track on trail bikes 15 years ago. It was wet and it took us more than ten hours to get through . We couldn't even stand up on some of the hills it was that slippery. Crazy trip
i grew up in the Daintree area, on a farm, been up the CREB many times, 4x4 and dirtbikes, and i tell you something, never again will i but a 4x4 with a Manual, i'll go an auto box any day, the moden 6 speed sports shift auto, massive difference. when you need a gear, with no loss of momentum.
My favourite episode of your videos yet! Felt all your fear and excitement the whole way, that was awesome mate. Fantastic camerawork too, some of those aerial shots are incredible, particularly when you made it right to the top of the monster hill. Keen for the rest of the series.
Great driving! You're a legend taking your son on such a great adventure. The Creb track is definitely on my bucket list, on the other hand it scares me to death. My blood got pumping just watching your amazing video! Thanks for sharing it
Some day I will be as experiencedas you Tyler.... bloody ripper being with you on your entire youtube journey mate.. you are teaching alot of us things to do mate legend
That was a ripper episode!!! The Nav is working bloody well:D Good to see one of the fellas from Far North Adv as well. Thanks heaps for all the hard work Tyler.
Bloody awesome Ep Tyler, great skill and editing mate, well done. Such an awesome experience for Kai, geez he has grown up and looks like he is loving time with Dad. Great helper with all your footage. The cruiser sounds awesome in the forest. Good decision to go fulltime with RUclips mate. Look forward to the rest of the series, cheers
chains are the go for there in the wet and if you only have one set then put them on the front so they pull you up, if they are on the rear it will push you across the treck and you may roll the vehicle. Have seen it a few times up there
Better tyres on the Nav? The Cruiser's tyres looked a little worn, the tyres on the Nav looked nearly new. Of course most of the time all tyres were full of mud so it's a bit hard to be sure.
Fast becoming the best channel on YT. Epic video mate. You can see how hard you work in getting great shots and editing is mint. Can’t wait for the next part 🍻
the creb in the dry is a glorified dirt road,, WHOLE different ball game in the wet ;) i did it towing a camper and it pissed down as we did that first hill, was heaps of fun only just made it up big red,, 3 fully kitted patrols/cruisers in a convoy mustve started it the same morning and they ended up stuck and had to walk away and leave their vehicles there for 3-4days untill it was dry enough to recover them
Thanks for the video. I am not sure when the track was constructed however as a boy, either in the late sixties or early seventies I remember experiencing the big hill. The circumstances were a grader operators who had worked on the track, drove my father and I over the CREB. It was better maintained at the time. I remember the experience vividly as as I holding on in the back of a canvas covered short wheel base land rover.
31:20 The scary thing is, if someone got stuck, or worse, broke down and were at the bottom at a creek, when it rains upstream, mountains of water can end up roaring down into those low spots. They rise and fall very fast and could easily drag a vehicle downstream.
Hi Tyler, thanks for the video. Really enjoyed watching it, I would think that you all had a great nights sleep after working so hard getting through the creb track. Looking forward to the next one. Cheers
Great video! We got caught in there with 15 cars about 6 weeks ago. Had to turn around at big red started pouring down rain, doesn’t look like it’s dried out much though even though it’s supposed to be the dry season
I live in Cairns and done the Creb a thousand times its best on a trail bike you haven't done it properly if you haven't had to swim the Daintree like we had to one year in during the wet season.
if you did drop the tire pressure to 10psi you would have remover the tires from the rims with all the steering movements you had to do.10 psi works good on sand but definitely not on rutted muddy tracks. been there done that and had to wait and camp. we where stuck for four days before we got out. even the ranger got stuck bring back the tires and rims i could not get back on. when stuck even the flat area that we camped in was really slick and slippery, was an adventure just to get to the toilet and shower block and by the time you got back to camp site you had mud half way up to knees. but had a great time anyway.
At 11:45 you said that you never saw something that slippery in your life. Actually it is quite comon in the world. You'll find such roads very often throughout South America, Central Africa and South East Asia and if not in red, then in yellow. I find those roads and ways fun to drive as well as those roads and ways are hard work to drive and even dangerous if you think about areas in the world where you have ongoing road traffic in both of the possible directions. The easiest way to take them would be to go with the Norwegian type of snow chains with spikes built in/on to them.
I've lately been devouring videos of stuff from up North. Every time I watch one it helps to motivate me to get things done so I can get back home. I've been in Brissie way too long now. I actually lived and worked at Bloomfield for a while.

Love to hear ol stories like this particularly from the 80s, I'm obsessed with the 80's. Fibro was that another word for asbestos in the 80s, 🤔

I love the combined look of excitement and terror on your face when hammering up that track. Absolute gold. Cant wait for the rest of this series!

Cheers for an awesome day mate! Can’t wait to see the rest of the series 👍

Footy boots would do the trick!
Done it twice in the rain. Got myself a Raptor twin locked with 35's and a good winch. Took me (by myself) about 7hrs to do. Absolute fun.
Far out thats no joke hey. The guy in the cruiser is a legend. A few cases went his way im sure.

the old army bar treads were much better than these road pattern you use
