- Edward Hopper's New York (NGA)
The National Gallery of Art has released a new video about the artist and his work and influence. In the podcast, which features more than 50 of Hopper's paintings and watercolors, Senior Curator Franklin Kelly discusses New York City, New England, and the cinema as Hopper saw and portrayed them-and as we view them today through his work. The filming of the pod cast was made possible by Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. Music composed and performed by Scott Silbert of the US Navy Band. Music engineered by David Morse of the US Navy Band.
A very informative presentation delivered in a most pleasant style. Thank you.
I wish the narrator had pointed out that although the streets are empty in paintings such
as “Early Sunday Morning,” above the storefronts and beyond the windows, and likewise,
the windows and walls of NewYork City brownstones and New England mansions, there
are people living their lives, waking, sleeping, loving, fighting and, yes, some are no doubt
sitting alone, experiencing alienation, and perhaps even staring out of the windows at us.
thank you for posting this..and thank you Booz Allen Hamilton Inc. for putting up the big bucks...and most of all thank you Senior Curator Franklin Kelly for your time, knowledge and your obvious love of Hopper's work.
Brilliant assessment of Hopper's work - thanks for posting!
A very informative delivery on Hopper's art, which I am currently being inspired by. Nighthawks was the first painting I viewed during college, and one I never forgot.
Excellent lecture. Thank you.
Absolutely amazing!
Hopper was a genius! The painter of feeling alone even in N.Y.C
Man, i dig this guys work.
We are proud to say he's our.. an AMERICAN painter!!!
His paintings send a profound message. It isn't loneliness or emptiness. Life can be full n satisfying without many things or luxury. So different from the world today, that's what i see.
I love Edward hopper ❤️♥️❤️
I love my wife.
@@pedrocuervobarrera7985I do too. 😜
Nighthawks is a tremendously influential source of blues music to me. One thing I've often wondered about it is, what is that little green rectangle shaped thing the woman seems to be eating? If that's a green cracker, it's past it's prime.
Hopper's find a calm, even amidst the busy city, a retreat into the beautiful aesthetic of contemporary life, censored from stark modernism, muted from the noise- a quiet angelic view of souls and the creative effect of souls, frozen, each in the everyday but also in their minds that open up new possibilities, their soul's passions, will, intellect, memories. Every scene is bigger than the frame.
Hopper is not a modern artist. He is classical, in a modern setting.
His paintings are very expressive, a fusion of dark & light. As an artist it has visual appeal. It’s not my style, I prefer painting landscapes.
Evoque une certaine solitude , tristesse ,difficile a définir ,mais très attachante peinture qui ne me laisse pas indemne . jaclo31
I just love Hopper stuff. That one "chop suey".....the womans face looks like a porcelain china doll. Man I'd love to be sitting in that restaurant
AS MY PAINTINGS ARE OFTEN COMPARED TO EDWARD HOPPER'S, YOU MIGHT ENJOY SEEING THEM. MAX FERGUSON
Show us some Max.
super 1
H reminds me of Britain's Jack Vetriano

I feel Jeffrey Smart's work often has a similar feel, too. I love Hopper's work.
Sooo New York... where is Nighthawks these days? Chicago. What he lit, hopefully not accidentally was our weird sence of voyeurism.
Looking into the mind of Hopper and finding loneliness is projection of our own mind.
Such arrogance calls for the investigation of our own mind. Psychotherapy is one way to understand why we project such attitudes.
At any rate, such behavior be it by a Senior Curator or young student, shows a complete lack of respect for the artist.
the modern world is just so ugly just too many cars.
