      @@billba respectfully ,This is what inspired an era in HipHop when it was truly an art form! Poetical geniuses and producers were influenced by Bob James, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Freddy Hubbard ect! This so called rap music /culture of today has nothing to do with that time!

    Hearing about the passing of Dave Sanborn brought me here. This was the first I had heard of Dave & was a fan from that point on.
    Thank you Bob for having Dave play an amazing solo. RIP Dave Sanborn

    Night Crawler by Bob James is a BAD JAM after all these years & will be for many more years too! With David Sanborn on Sax & the late great Eric Gale on Guitar. Still a MONSTER track!

    I was 19 years old when I heard this record in 77, I wore the grooves off of it. It was the first BJ record I learned to play, I thought it was such a beautiful mix of a groove. I am a Chicago kid but this has the NYC thing on it. I can not say enough about the composition and arranging of the Professor BJ aka Mr. Bob James. My fave musician in the whole wide world, bar none! Smooth jazz my ass, this man goes hard! And David Sanborn and Eric Gale...they worked this joint. Oh and I think Stevie Gadd kept that pocket tight and right.

    My dad had this record. Post counting and farm yard animal sounds stuff and themes from westerns, this song was among my first musical memories. I bought him 'Straight Up' when I was 15 or 16 as a bit of a thank you.

    I remember hearing this on WJZZ in Detroit in the 70 s ...and just one of Bob James mellow cuts to chill folks out...its still a bossing cut and its 2021..

      You ain't said but a word. And I don't think you left anybody out of that lineup except possibly Donald Byrd. I was all over these musicians chillin with wall to wall stereo equipment, receivers, amps, turntables, pre-amps, fisher speakers, reel to reel with sound on sound and the best quervo money could buy. Lord I miss those days.

    Con razón, me pareció muy familiar y nostálgico este hermoso sonido: es de 1977.
    Se utilizó mucho en las llamadas tandas publicitarias, de finales de los 70 y hasta mediados de los 80 en los diversos canales de televisión acá en Chile.
    Las tandas publicitarias, fueron breves anuncios de no más de 20 segundos, acompañadas de hermosas notas musicales de trabajos clásicos de Bob James, Herbie Hanckock, Pat Metheny, Jean Luc-Ponty, Chic Corea...

      Night Crawler has a bad bass line horn section is good too.
      Nautilus has a tough bass line as well

    I owned a copy of this magnificent release by Mr. Bob James when it first came out and listened to it endlessly. The musical lineup including Eric Gale speaks volumes. Outstanding performances by all the musicians involved.

    Of course, everyone recognizes and acknowledges the contributions of *Bob James.* People will always remember how "Nautilus" was highly sampled by Hip Hop. Unfortunately, very few people acknowledge or even remember the incredible bass lines in that song and many other Bob James tunes (this one included). *Gary King* is the *Tyrion Lannister* of jazz bass performers.
