      Wish you could tell me all about it! Based on her interviews, I've always felt that Montserrat Caballe was a gracious, friendly person. Is my assumption correct? Also, were you able to converse with other principles (Pav)freely, or did they sequester themselves?

      Caballe's singing is lovely but to my ears she sounds underpowered for the role; I never heard her live and really do not know how big her voice was. The play with dynamics is skillful but unwritten; when I heard the radio broadcast I thought it was a disguise to make her crescendos sound bigger than they actually were. All said I will take her performance over someone screaming out the role, which are many.

    • @mubaraksenju7521

      @@williammaddox3339 I bet her voice was very big and it projects very well. Too bad I didnt live in her era, as I'm only 24. Anyways, the dynamics are not vague, rather it was super clear. We can hear very well where she did her pianissimo, diminuendo or her fortissimo. Her climax at figlio del cielo proves her raw talent. What a voice. She's one of the few who can actually sing, and not scream. I agree that few of the pianissimo is unwritten and unnecessary, but I take that as her interpretation. It's boring if it was textbook. Her voice blends so perfectly with the orchestra be it sharp or tad flat, who knows. What a woman, what a talent.

      @Ihdc1 7 лет назад +13

      Kaufmann is NOT better than Pavarotti if that's what you're implying. Kaufmann's voice is loud but ugly. He essentially has the timbre and tone color of a baritone which sounds warm and rich in the lower register but lacks the ring and vibrance of Pavarotti in the upper register so sounds very harsh and grating when he gets to the high notes. The only tenor to surpass Pavarotti in "Nessun Dorma" was Franco Corelli who had the power and weight of Kaufmann (especially in the lower register) but the ring and vibrance of Pavarotti.

    Para todos estos sabios que dicen que Caballé no da la talla, recuerdo que fue Birgit Nilsson quien le dijo que debía cantar Turandot y no solo Liu. Una señora que sabía poco de este papel, al parecer. Caballé en escena a lo mejor no era tan convincente por razones obvias, pero su forma de cantar y su intensidad, a la que añade en ciertos momentos verdadera belleza, componen una principessa distinta, pero asombrosa. Mi Turandot también es la que quiero imaginar a la Callas en Buenos Aires, pero ni estuve allí ni se conserva, que yo sepa, grabación completa, aunque sí algunos fragmentos increíbles. Montsita canta con una pasión y una entrega, y con menos autocomplacencia que en otros papeles, que suplen con creces la falta de dramatismo, y sus fortísimos son mejores que los de muchas dramáticas, y están mucho más afinados. La capacidad que tenía para pasar del fffff al pppp, o de cantar piano, media voz, piano... aportan a su Turandot un valor añadido que no tiene, por ejemplo, Eva Marton, que lo canta todo igual. Las notas flotantes al final del segundo acto, justo antes de los fortísimos, acariciándonos, no están al alcance de sopranos más "adecuadas", pero que dan una versión mucho más plana. Ninguna otra canta con tantos colores y matices la escena de los enigmas. Quizá no sea "la mejor" Turandot, pero es de las mejores, y, sobre todo, es distinta.

    Much more interesting than the standard ice cold princess In questa reggia sounds if she is reviving it all in a transe like it should be but there is warmth under the surface freezing high notes.

    I have never been a big fan of Caballe. Not really sure why, just not in love with her voice. But, I really like her in this role. And of course, Pavarotti is amazing and Leona Mitchell probably the best Liu I have ever heard!! Wish I could have seen this. I love 1:09:40-1:14:28 love it

      See the video Paris Opera 1981 and see how she is really convincing.She has the power and the luscious sensuous voice to trap Calaf forever her bottom chest notes are a must too.And she really sings in questa regia as under a big trauma,which really is what this aria is about.

      Could she sing Brunnhilde, too? How about Elektra? I lke Caballe. In Verdi. And in Bellini. And in Donizetti. But in Turandot? Not a big enough voice. It takes a Nilsson or a Callas to sing Turandot.

    Je préfère la version de Paris avec Giacomoni de 1981... je sais que bcp de groupies vont hurler au crime de lése caballe mais elle a beau être extraordinaire et carrément exceptionnelle en 81 à Paris c'est le rôle qui tua sa voix... plus jamais après elle n'a pu se hisser à un tel niveau de chant et ce ne fut qune longue décadence ce qui me fait souvent dire qu'elle aurait du arrêter sa carrière en 81. Mais bon c'est comme sa norma d'orange de 74 c'est juste exceptionnel.

    This is THE definitive Turandot live, Pav's 1997 version at the Met coming in a very close second. It's a pity that up till now, neither this performance nor the Met one have been released on video. (Actually, there is a short video snippet of Pav hitting the high C in "No no principessa altera" from the Met performance, but that's all - it can be found here: ruclips.net/video/C61CKzWflFo/видео.html) It's been like more than 12 years since Pav passed away and neither SF opera nor the Met have released his Turandot on video...
    Speaking of the high C, the only versions on video are horrible, with Carreras copping out of the high C in the 1983 Vienna performance, and Domingo doing the same in his 1997 Met performance... please someone from SF or Met, release Pavarotti's COMPLETE Turandot performance on video soon!
