  • www.tm.org Suffering and Evolution is discussed by the two great scientists - Dr Ilya Prigogine and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
Prigogine: I feel that there is a deep convergence in the views expressed by Maharishi and some of the aims towards unity which is expressed in recent tendencies in science... There was one statement made by Maharishi which I am not exactly understanding. It is a very optimistic statement and I would like to see if I have not understood it. It is a statement that "Suffering is related to violation of laws of nature." Now this is of course an extremely optimistic statement in the sense that if we could learn how not violate the laws of nature then suffering would in a sense stop. How to combine life with the absence of suffering?...
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi: One very beautiful thing that is contained in Dr Prigogine's remarks is a very basic principle of evolution. Evolution proceeds on differences, counter distinction, opposition and that is between activity and rest - cycles there is activity and there is rest. All the cycles of days and nights, activity and rest, sleep and waking, activity and rest. This is how evolution proceeds.
Now, suffering is because of the drag that creative intelligence feels to itself. The evolutionary process of this cycle of rest and action, of rest and action is because of the creative nature of life. Life must create newer values, higher values, bigger horizons - it must create through the cycles rest and activity.
Maharishi began teaching Transcendental Meditation to world in the 1950's to help all people overcome suffering and to increase the speed of evolution.
We can't think suffering is a part of life - always evolution, always evolutionary...
Conference of Evolutionary Models in Nature - December 21-22, 1975 in Vitznau, Switzerland.

Such a charming analogy to explain why suffering is optional.

I had an experience of disolution of ego once and I realized that all the time I was obstructing the flow of the universe and that's where the suffering came from, now I understood that one must simply surrender to the flow of the universe. This is also where our problems come from in society, we are all insane and we are lacking in love because we are disconnected so we find all sorts of crazy ways to fill that gap, some with drugs some with buying and many more nuanced ways.

I didnt understand this... he says both Rest and Activity are part of the creative intelligence which is the core of the evolutionary process... But he says If the creative intelligence finds obstruction of free and full expression, it becomes uncomfortable which is pain and suffering (the question asked : "How can there be life without suffering as suffering is reason behind the evolutionary process".... So the suffering that we face is in relation to the obstruction to our freedom to full express our creative intelligence... how does connecting oneself to the Base of all the Laws of Nature help solve this "Suffering"
