    Nice video short and to the point. Quick question, can the solenoid be intermittent? Or is that a sign of a short. I have brake lights. Thanks for any info.

    • @ryry7886
      @ryry7886 Год назад +2

      It could be intermittent but its usually a matter of it going out(losing strength) and then the solenoid not having enough power to push through the transmisions resistance. Transmission resistance depends how strong your parking break is applied and if you are parked on an incline or decline, tgen the car rolls after you shut it off. if you dont push a (properly adjusted) parking brake all the way down, your car will roll after turning it off and it binds up the trnsmission into park. You dont ever want your car to roll after turning it off and you let your foot off the brake. he more your car rolls after putting it in park, the harder it is to pop it out of park so sometimes a bad solenoid will be strong enough, sometimes it wont. If you are having issues, try not to park on an incline, park sideways if you can so the tilt is side to side instead of front to back and always push the parking brake down almost as hard as you can before you put it into park. This should help until you can get it fixed.
      So to answer your question another way. The solenoid itself is not intermittent but it will lose strength when it starts going out. The amount of grip you give your parking brake affects the amount of pressure your transmission torques up after turning your car off. This is intermittent and will cause your solenoid to work intermittently. Its a bit of a tricky question so i tried giving a couple different resposes for the same answer.
      Shorts usually dont happen in never cars unless it was in an accident or something crazy happened. A lot of people dont set the parking brake and just force it out of park. This wears down the solenoid quickly and can cause you to have to pony up for a new transmission prematurely.

      2005 Aviator here. I think the last owner bypassed the solenoid because the truck never goes fully into park and has a push to start button. So it will start in any gear which is dangerous.
      And now it won't go into park at all.
      After taking off the shift cover it appears the shifter can't move forward any further due to it hitting the metal bracket.
      Been working on cars my entire life and never dealt with this.
      This is why I stick to Chevys. LOL
      Any idea why or could the BSI cause this to happen.?

      @@ryry7886You described me and my problem very succinctly. I always park on a hill and never used the parking brake, so my car always rolls into park. So now I think that binds my transmission into the park, So I can no longer shift my car out of the park position, unless I manually press down on the shift lock. Which probably means my shift lock solenoid has gone bad or my transmission has binded into park so badly that my shift lock solenoid is no longer strong enough to lift it out of park. I'm replacing my shift lock solenoid this week, hoping that fixes the problem, but I suspect it might not. Because when I manually shift the solenoid out of park, my transmission bangs hard and jerks, which could be an indicator of how badly they are bound into park. I might need a new tranny. What do you think? My car won't shift out of park now without manually holding down the shift lock, and it bangs loudly when I shift into reverse

      @@vincentdisisto8251 I've been told it could be a faulty "brake light switch", below the brake pedal (cheapest option), or the shifter cable (expensive). I ordered the OEM switch today.

      Probably bad linkage from shift lever. Oftentimes this happens due to a small plastic piece failing.
      I fixed mine by setting it back in place in the steering column and then wrapping the part in rubber tape.

    Why would my shift interlock solenoid be getting boiling hot while idling in "P" (park)?

  • @loumason6120

    I just bought a 2015 PPV Charger and haven't even put 150 miles on it and the brake light, ABS and Traction control lights came on for about 50 miles..we cleared the lights and it's now stuck in park..had to tow it from an intersection because i didn't know about the pink unlock button so i could get it home.. Every mechanic had a different story so i took it to a guy that says it has to be the ABS module.. i'm pissed because this won't be cheap! the part was five bill$.. Haven't got it back yet, i think it's the solenoid. Those police cars can look nice but they have hard miles on most of them.

    • @ryry7886
      @ryry7886 Год назад +1

      If you think about it. Cops always just throw the car in park and run after suspects. They dont usually put the parking break on so its probably a common issue for those cars. Hopefully you got it cheap and the transmission is ok.
      A shift interlock solenoid shouldnt be that expensive but the ABS and trac control light tells me its something else going on, maybe on top of the solenoid

      @@ryry7886 just got it back...The guy that fixed it use to run a service dept at a Dodge dealership 12 years ago and CLAIMED it was the ABS module so he puts it on and THEN said i need both front wheel speed sensors for everything to work together!. $1200 parts/labor! ...and the first guy that looked at it said it was the wheel speed sensors but i didn't want to use their shop. I think i got ripped! it was probably a $300 fix. I'll never know now

      Your shift cable that pulls the gear lever could be broken, or it's bolt is rusted under the hood so it no longer pulls. First inspect its connection to the gear shifter by opening up the gear console. If that's good, then look under the hood to inspect the cable and the shift position metal bracket to see if they are rusted, if so, apply penetrating oil to loosen them

    I'm hoping someone here can help me. I have a 2018 honda hrs. the problem I'm having is that on one occasion my car works fine, but like today, I press press the button to start my car, all the lights come onto my dash, I press the button a third time with my foot on the brake, and the car shuts down like I never pressed the brake pedal. I also notice that when I press the brake pedal, I don't hear the usual "click" to indicate that the shift lever has been released. Additionally, my brake lights don't come on. I leave my car for a few minutes, or hours, and miraculously, it works ,and I can start my car.
    Is it possible that it's also my shift interlock solenoid? I also changed my brake position switch, so I don't think that's the problem.
