Drawer Will Not Stay Closed: Fix Drawer Slides That Open by Themselves

  • Our kitchen cabinet drawers were not staying closed. The least vibration when walking on the floors would cause the drawers to open. When drawer slides are not closing all the way, sometimes the fix is simple. To fix the constantly open cabinet drawers, I first unlatched the drawer from its track. Then I removed a screw from the front edge of each track. Then by placing a shim under each of the tracks, I was able to raise the track just enough to keep the track from its downhill inclination. That's was all that was needed. A super simple fix for any DIY'er that will save you a bunch of cash by not having to hire the job out!

Seems much better than having to go out and buy magnets! I’m going to try this on my IKEA drawers that have been driving me crazy

How did you get the drawer out first? I have a trash pull out that I need to take off the track but don’t know how to release it. Thank you

      Hey Julie,
There should be a latch (? plastic ) in the track - something you can depress which allows you to pull the drawer and 1/2 the track out…
Since there are so many designs, it’s hard to say exactly.
Play detective , look up and down the track ( or ) if the drawer glides are underneath, then lay on the floor and see what things look like there.
Ask yourself what you could press to help release it . If the tracks are in 2 parts on either side, then pull the drawer out as far as it goes and see what is keeping the 2 halves from coming apart.
Be patient. The builder put them in- so they must come out… it can be a bit of a puzzle.
If the inside of your silverware draw has a makers mark (sticker, printing or brand burned into the wood ) you might then be able to search the internet for your specific cabinet maker.
      Hope that helps.
      Thx for watching!

Hi, what would I do if the tracks are more towards the middle rather than the bottom like on your drawer? Thanks

      Hey Holly,
Same principle would apply. Just try a slight adjustment on the rails like I did and you should get the same result.
