This list is not a genuine attempt to rank The Beatles' songs in order of quality. Even I, a self-confessed Beatles agnostic, can see that it's ridiculous. Even with the most sincere intent, why attempt such a folly? Ranking a bunch of albums is one thing, even a catalogue of 20+. But 214 songs? Nuts. No, this list exists to fulfil humanity's current greatest need: scrolling through stuff. That's what we do now. We scroll. And occasionally click. Those of us too feeble to do our own scrolling rely on the likes of TLM to do our scrolling for us. This is known as wet-nurse scrolling. So, thanks, Joe and Jason. Just when I thought I couldn't expect anything more of you, you restore my faith in humanity once more.

I used to love “best of” lists when it came to anything; movies, music, tv shows, sports, books, artist, and so on. It helped my scatterbrain organize large bodies of work, and is a reason I enjoy this channel. I owe much of my love of classic cinema to an AFI 100 greatest movies list from 1998, and I well remember VH1’s countdowns of greatest artists/albums, and ESPNs “sports century” lists, among others. Sadly, lists are just troll jobs now. People make up awful lists just to get people clicking on them or talking about them, like this. Rolling Stone comes out with new lists all the time, each worse than the last. ESPN does this too in the sports world. This list looked like the writer hit shuffle on an iPod and listed the songs. This list, and so many others list it, are mere clickbait and should not be taken seriously.

It's very hard for me to see Now and Then, Free as a Bird and Real Love as Beatles' songs. Those are Lennon's songs/demos, written in the late 70s, and a reunion was never in his agenda, I guess. If Lennon's family wanted to finish and release these songs they should have done it under his own name. And, yes, they could even have invited other Beatles to participate - no harm in that. But releasing those songs as Beatles songs is abusive. Of course using the Beatles as a flagship is much more profitable, but unlike what they say I don't think Lennon would have wanted this.

I generally eschew ranking anyway, as apart from maybe one or two supreme examples of a certain category that do deserve top rank, I think such exercises become arbitrary to the point of illogic. For example, what sense does it make to state that Paul Klee, say, was the sixteenth greatest artist of the twentieth century? I do think relative ranking is more defensible, so that Amedeo Modigliani (to again grapple with the pantheon of twentieth-century artists) could be said to rank below Piet Mondrian in importance, who in turn could plausibly be argued to rank below Henri Matisse, and one could assign numbers to those ranks just for the sake of convenience, but otherwise such numerical rankings strike me as silly.
As I've posted before, I think calling "Now and Then" a Beatles song is dubious for a variety of reasons, so its inclusion in the new list further complicates the list for me. I will say that "Penny Lane" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" deserve a high ranking in assessing the Beatles' legacy, and "A Day in the Life" is a defensible top pick, so the Vulture list seems pretty secure in those top three rankings.

I originally gave up reading this list around the #200 mark because I could tell it was just going to annoy and frustrate me and I had already recently seen their foolish Stones list so I expected a similar type of thing. Glancing through it as you were scrolling I saw they had some songs I really love just way too low like The Fool on the Hill, I've Just Seen a Face and Happiness is a Warm Gun. I am glad that Revolution #9 wasn't #1 though, that would have been a real 👨‍🎨 move. The top didn't end up being quite a crazy as I initially expected at least. I agree there should be a balance of classic picks with a few surprises - although it's best if those surprises make you go "hmm yeah that is a good pick" and not "wtf are you thinking".
I'd have Now and Then pretty darn close to the bottom, I wouldn't feel good about having it even outside the bottom 3-5 probably.

"Rain" had the potential to be one of the coolest recordings ever, if the lads had nailed that Indian harmony part in the chorus, but they didn't quite get it, John doesn't get the intonation right on one note, which imo needed that Indian quarter tone thing, the whole track would have been beyond epic, if he got that right, even Joe would have loved it, perhaps even Kramzer ;-)

I was 12 year’s old when the Beatles broke up big fan then and now. If you were following them post-Beatles, the vitriol Lennon and Paul had was so painful to watch considering how much of their music was about love. I rank Now and Then much higher as a result feel it’s John coming to terms with his anger and feelings. Without that experience or context can see people liking it less.

Well I opened the list and the first thing it said was that Good Day Sunshine was the worst Beatles song. Already I'm pissed off, and I've been reading this list for two seconds. Now and Then isn't a masterpiece, but it's a really pretty ballad. It doesn't deserve this treatment. She's Leaving Home at 204? You're telling me that Wild Honey Pie deserves to be 25 songs higher than She's Leaving Home? Oh Darling at 178, Mother Nature's Son at 169... I'm noticing a trend here. I think this quote says it all: "it’s disconcerting to think that McCartney was spending so much time on fluff when he could have been looking for mature follow-ups to Penny Lane or Lovely Rita." Listen, I used to feel the exact same way. I used to think that McCartney's light and goofy songs were annoying. I also used to be a cynical jerkpants. McCartney is delightful, his fun and breezy music is among his most vital, and whoever wrote this doesn't deserve it.

You're missing the point by simply agreeing or disagreeing with his placings. It is so overtly bad one has to wonder why and suspect a trick to provoke listeners reactions. And it succeeds.
One major flaw is the need to base aesthetic judgement on biography or shitty notions on what should be Lennon's or McCartney's personnality. Worst is the overestimating of lyrics, especially when the journalist doesn't get the specific use of words in songs. It's like he expects everytime some piece of bad literature : literal meaning, true to the composer's biography. It's a poor misconception of songwriting, and art in general.
