The first flight on the video was the best I ever got out of it. It has been a consistent flyer, but not usually as well as that! Thanks for looking in. I found your channel very inspiring.
It's hard not to, but when you have a HLG that flies like this don't become too attached. Better, build another right now. You can launch a HLG much higher by attaching a hook some distance forward of the CG and using 1/4" rubber and fishing line as a high start. If you do this be prepared to part with it. Thanks for the fun!
thats exactly what i do My 64 year old arms can not throw very hard any more and also i love to see it go up on a mini high start 1/8 rubber followed by 60 feet of very thin line
@@larzhillbot1443 I use a small hi-start with my KK Dolphin...I might have to try it on a towline/hi start. It's trimmed for catapult now, so I think you might need a little incidence in the wing for a hi-start. Currently set at 0-0.
@@kenkingsflyingmachines2382 i thought about that , you are right ill make another one just for a small high start , i made a Airflow glider just for kicks and it has a ton of incidence lol ....The Polaris most likely needs an 1/8 or so of it at the LE
I seem to remember a Polaris being by far the most successful glider I ever built. I'm sure I never got impressive flights like this but as a 9/10/11 year old I was more than happy. I could never get tissue cover models built without warps and twists, even with my dad's help. I even built a second one after I lost the first. That was in the late 1960's. I've no idea what happened to it.
Awesome best Polaris i have ever seen fly Huge thumbs up i see you lengthened the tail boom did you keep the same wing cord and span ? i will have to build one very close to yours and use a mini high start
Impressive. Now I need to build one of those myself. It's great you have such great flying grounds. How do yo do the launch? With a stick and rubber catapult, or by hand?
Sorry, I've been out of circulation for a few weeks! They are all catapult launch gliders. 2-9" loops of 1/8" rubber on a 6" handle. OK, I "cheat". My handle is more like 9" long. Thanks for watching!
Hi, Paul. I lengthened the tailboom and made the tail feathers about 75% original size. Also I tried to get the wing and stab as close to 0 angular difference (decalage) as I could. What little I wrote about the build and design changes are here: www.hippocketaeronautics.com/hpa_forum/index.php?topic=25633.0 Thanks for watching!
i started building one today the more i look at yours Man How Long is that tail boom ?? i extended my fuselage by 2.5 inches but still looks short compaired to yours i intend to use a mini high start
Hello! I am happy to share the design data I recorded. I have the tail moment arm recorded as 9", the stab area is 9.42 square inches. I did some experimenting with smaller tails on longer booms, and I think the tail feathers are now about 2/3 original size. I also did some undocumented playing around with the size of the rudder. I am discovering the relationship between rudder height, dihedral, and tendency to loop on launch. I think I have a reasonable compromise now. I am sure you have your own airfoil ideas, but this one has the high-point 33% back from the leading edge. Given the elliptical nature of the wing, that high point makes a straight line from tip to tip. I think the high point should be closer to 25% of the chord, yielding a curved line. Good luck and share your results!
@@kenkingsflyingmachines2382 Thanks so much for your response/ info i hope to get a test flight late this evening if the wind quiets down ill take my go pro along Huge thank you
@@larzhillbot1443 I'm using 2-9" loops of 1/8" tan rubber on a sawed off wooden spoon handle with an eye screw in the end. I'm sure it's not contest-legal, but it works well. My different gliders need different angles and tension, etc for successful launching. The Polaris needs what I consider a "big" launch, about 45° up. I don't have video of the transition...( I need to work on that)...it does a dramatic smooth roll at the top if I get it just right.
@@kenkingsflyingmachines2382 thanks so much again i did get a few flights on mine catapult style but only 20 to 30 second flights so far but i will keep working at it i am building a second one to have as a back up when i finally get some dialed in flights i post a video cheers
Hi, Pualo. It's catapult launched. I use 2-9" loops of 1/8" tan rubber on a cut-off wooden spoon handle. The horizontal stab hits my hand a lot on launch and knocks it off, which is a problem.
Hello Mr. King! Thank you for your answer! You see, I was wondering how do you manage to launch that glider so high and It didn't seem it was with an Hi-Start because if it was like that, we probably would notice it on the video. Now, I know! More, It has to be a joy to achive that high and then watch the bird coming down gliding that slooooow! It is awesome! Mainly because it's a solid balsa plane (I know that in the video, you say 21grs., it's not a stick & tissue craft and the air conditions seem quite nice but, even so!...)! In Portugal we have this saying: "The simpler, the better" (I believe you have it, too) and, there you have it! Congratulations on a very nice well built plane and top flights! Keep them coming, please! Cumpliments! Paulo Duarte
Wonderful flights...............
What a change not to see a free flight model ,converted to rc and electric motor ! 😻
Congrats on building a glider with such a wonderful glide 👍
Very nice. Beautiful flights.
Now that's what I call a free flight glider , excellent model
Hmm… I was thinking about trying some old-schools gliders. This is a nice one! 👍😊

Very good flight and off course the model. A question? It's HLG or Catapult... thanks and grettings from Chile
Hello! The original design was for a HLG but I use a catapult with the standard 2- 9" loops of 1/8" rubber. So simple, yet challenging.

Nice flat glide. Dog and cat seem unimpressed.
The animals bring as much joy as the airplanes! The first flight was the longest timed flight I've ever had. Thank you for watching.
