When my little sister (well, youngest sister) at 38 with 4 year old son and 3 year old twin daughters was diagnosed with cancer and given 6 months to live, I quit my job and took turns with my mom to care for her at home until her death. The pain and horror of the cancer, not to mention the deep bedsores, will always haunt me. During her last 3 days, she was in pain so bad that with every breath she moaned so loud, despite being on maximum morphine drip. Our hospice nurse quietly, without any word, showed my other sister, a nurse, the port in the morphine machine. When my beautiful, loving little sister was in such pain and was nothing but skin and bones, was suffering so horribly, my sister withdrew the contents of the morphine pump and inserted it into the lower port, while all of us held it, together, and pushed. Her kids are in their 20’s now and they couldn’t be more loved. Anyone who has had a loved one suffer so horribly with no hope, and still deny that loved one relief and peace, is only considering their own mental state. I love you Patty, I miss you so much and will see you soon.
Ur beautiful sister sounded like she died around the same time as y mother I was 22 she was 57. I was obsessed with her care. The suffering cancer caused her and all of us was so traumatic it feel like it happened yesterday not almost 19 years ago. And her love and guidance is still with me: at the end her organs liquified and started to exit her body while she was awake and conscious. Only then did they put her in an induced coma. I don’t know how that’s care. May both our beautiful girls rip
When she celebrated her winning, my heart shattered. How absolutely heartbreaking to know that some people suffer so much that they are overjoyed with the thought of being able to end the suffering. She was an incredible lady! So very brave for all she's done.
That happiness was bigger than just her. She was celebrating for everyone. So that all of us had the right to end our suffering. She wasn't ecstatic about getting to die.

My mum was murdered in a hospital On a morphine pump & comatose, no food or water, just bonked out of her brain for 2weeks until she died. My mum was a strong woman. This all happened in 2005. I'm crying as I write. Mum would have liked to have had the opportunity to die with dignity, not suffer for two weeks When she died I was with her. You should have seen the size of the blisters on her tongue. I'm writing this in 2020 & it still upsets me. I love mum so much & hated to see her die like she did. The two weeks it took her to die wasn't palliative care, it was traumatic & mum was treated worse than an animal. At least animals can be put down. I love you mum ♥️
I am so sorry you and your darling Mum had to go through that . I too, day and night for 2 weeks watched my wonderful Dad be put through same in 2009, it was traumatic, I still have times of upset. I will never forget. :(
I am so very sorry your Mum and you had to go through that. There is a thing called medical trauma and it sounds like that's what you went through. My Dad was also tortured in a hospital - pharmaceutically incarcerated. He was pumped full of drugs for the last two months of his life until his spirit finally had enough and checked out. I hope you have had some healing from that pain
I'm terminally ill with esophageal cancer, and I have seriously considered assisted suicide once things get to the point that the pain is unbearable. I tend to think the doctor so vehemently against the right to die with dignity sees this as a threat to the continuing income the medical professionals derive from people who are dying. The longer the death drags on, the more money in some doctor's pocket. Frankly, it's none of the government's business if I decide to end my life to escape an agonizing death. Some states here in the USA apparently agree, as they've passed such provisions on their laws.
Dave Seavy , hello, I am in Canada and am up very late here as it is nearly 3 am where I am, but my chronic pain conditions and their effects are just slightly unbearable as far as sleeping goes so here I am, watching dear Gloria's video and have been crying off and on watching her. I watched a very good friend pass from a terminal illness in 1999, but it's like it was yesterday seeing him and what he went thru. I know we don't know each other, but when I saw your comment and that you posted not long ago(it says one hour currently) I wanted to reply to you, I just felt compelled to. I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis and I hope whether you ever see my reply or not that you will not suffer. That you have your needs and wants met and even love and friendship and anything to make the future of your life easier Not harder for you. I just wanted to tell you there's something about your words and comment....that boldly reached out to me and I think you are a level-minded kind man and I just want you to know I care and will not forget this very brief moment I shared across the country with you even if it's one sided.... I just care and hope you have and continue to have what you need to live in as little discomfort as possible and your next journey be one of peace and light and goodness. Dave I lost my Dad to the same thing. He got his from acid re-flux over many years. Didn't smoke, didn't drink and was just before the "purple pill" that I now take for the exact same condition he had before mine turns cancerous. I watched my Dad from beginning to end so I'm not just talking out of my behind when I say YOU are a strong guy, you are a human being who deserves the choice to decide when to go. I feel with that diagnosis you should be leaving the hospital with the beginning approvals needed to have that choice. What you are dealing with is no small battle and I understand that. I wish the very best wishes in your journey and I hope you get as much comfort care as they can provide.

I've had dogs for over 20 years. The worst problem when they get terminally sick is that they can't tell us when it's time. We have to guess, so we leave with feelings of remorse, guilt, some uncertainty that we made the right decision at the right time, not wanting to steal a single day from them, but not wanting to see them suffer for a day too long. What I'd give for them to tell me! So here we have *HUMAN BEINGS* in the same situation, able to communicate their pain, their wishes, their reasoning, and we ignore them???? I've talked with my veterinarian at length about this. He sees this part of his job as his least favorite, but he calls it "a GIFT to be able to at least do for animals what we won't even do for each other." I've looked my animal companions in the eyes as they pass, wanting to share their last moments. It's not easy, but it's the best I can give them in the worst of times; *they've EARNED the best death I can give them in return for a lifetime of friendship and love. Why can't we do this for each other??* I would want someone to do this for me. FYI: At a university animal hospital, I asked one of the student interns, *"how will I know when it's time?"* I knew already that they couldn't tell me specifically, but I've used his answer as a guide ever since. (Insert long pause) Paraphrasing, but exactly what I took away: "When he's no longer a dog. He won't be interested in his toys or even special treats. He won't care about rides or walks. If you wait 'too long' he won't even be able to care because the pain will be too much. He won't care who you are at that point, so don't expect him to raise his head when you call his name if he can't even eat. If nothing interests him, and he can't even bare to recall who you are, you waited 'too long,' so do it _before that_ is my best suggestion." *This isn't about murder; it's about mercy.*
Totally agree. I'm just sad that it seems that most people who oppose assisted death are not I'll or have never been chronically ill, or lived with someone with terminal illness. I'm hoping the more we film and talk about illnesses and mental health....the more they will understand and show empathy. I'm chronically I'll and bed ridden and deteriorating fast, and have already contacted dignitas in Switzerland. I too, want the option . After seeing my father being resuscitated and manipulated by doctors etc, when he suffered a terminal illness and was basically a vegetable at the end .......it made me wish he had an option. He suffered such a long miserable pain filled time facing the ceiling. He was blind and deaf as well...... he died 20 years ago. Being a nurse that has taken care of countless wonderful human beings in their last hours I can tell you most if they had a chance would have done exactly this and they came from all walks of life, I've been around it enough to know if I'm terminal I'm not going out like that I'll have what Gloria is having thank you very much❤❤
Thank you Sue and Gloria. My Mum was able to live her last 100 days of life with determination and happiness. Mum took M.A.I.D. in February 2021 after a short but debilitating diagnosis. She was able to love, renounce her mistakes and enjoy her favourite pastimes and meals. Her heart was lifted by the choices and determination she had until her last minutes. Although very difficult for me, I am forever grateful she had this choice.
What kind of BS did that Dr. refer to, "We can't give everything what everybody wants." Seriously? How dare this man have the audacity to say this. You cannot judge someone unless you have walked in the shoes of a person who is terminally ill, has pain, and is suffering. As human beings, it is a personal choice to be able to leave this earthly realm peacefully with dignity, and respect.

My grandmother had ALS. Awful & deteriorating disease. At first she started falling down, and then she started loosing all mobility. Then, she couldn't even speak anymore. I learned to read and write in russian ( i speak fluently, due to it being my familys first language) and would write with her. Before i moved she wrote to me 'I love you' and then lost her ability to even write. She became awfully moody (which i dont blame her) and the second she'd see me she'd start crying. She cried looking at just about anything. 1 year after, she passed. I will forever miss her, and would take walks around the park in brooklyn where we used to go and start crying. However, she's free and forever missed. I pray for those struggling with ALS and hope to find a cure soon. What a strong and beautiful woman. Rest in peace.
This awful disease strips you of everything, including your dignity. It is so sad, people are totally clear in the head while being totally locked in inside their body and mind. It must be so horrifying and scary.
I was with my dad when he died from cancer, and it was both a blessing to be by his side during his final moments but also incredibly distressing to see what he had to endure. His lungs filled up with tumors, as they spread, and fluid. He was on bi-pap to assist in his breathing, and when all of his kids were home and he knew we were there with him by his side, he asked to be taken off. He was given morphine via IV in both his hand and chest, and it caused him to feel extremely hot and then cold and he was so uncomfortable, until he eventually went into a coma. A nurse was supposed to see him every hour to ensure he was getting the IV doses to alleviate his pain, and that occurred most of the time over the course of 12+ hours. However, it was not always possible and he'd flinch and appeared to be in pain. He'd gurgle and make wincing sounds from time to time, and my mother eventually cried and told him it was okay to just let go and we would be okay. It was so heartbreaking, and he eventually passed on. No one should ever have to endure pain and suffering, and I'm sure those opposed to dying with dignity will have a very different point of view if faced with a terminal illness that causes extreme pain and suffering. We need to stop referring to it as "assisted suicide" and religious beliefs need to be kept out of politics altogether. If you believe it's immoral, don't do it. We should all have the right to be an active participant in our end of life care, including whether we want to put an end to our pain and suffering.
I was a caregiver for a gal with ALS. When I started she was able to walk and talk, they gave her a year or two at most. This gal survives for seven years. I was with her when they put in her feeding tube, then two years later when they put in her trachea/breathing tube. It was terrible watching this gal who was so vibrant and amazing go through everything she went through. It took seven years for her to finally go, but when she did she was just a shell of her former self. I full support Doctor assisted suicides, i believe that if you want to control it and go out with dignity on your own account, you should be able to.

I can't imagine being ready to die, where I am in life now. But the thought of losing all control while my mind worked perfectly well is terrifying. To think you lose control of your limbs, movement, even to the point of losing control of your bowels so someone is constantly cleaning up after you, while you lie in a bed with a fully functioning brain is just torture. There is no dignity in having people do all that for you! If I was in a court situation I would want to get them all to close their eyes and talk through all the loss they would have, get them to imagine that situation, if they still come out of that image saying it's a fine way to die, then there is something wrong with them!!!
it never ceases to amaze me that a human being cannot choose to die on their own you have to have a perfect stranger make that decision for you it's ridiculous if somebody is suffering they have a right to make that choice. it's the government trying to take control away from a human being. if somebody is suffering they should have the right to choose the way they go out instead of suffering to the very end.
When we, as a collective, stop referring to this as "suicide" and begin calling it what it is - death with dignity and part of our free will as a human being - we can start having rational discussions that aren't about semantics. We decide when a pet is in too much pain and we allow a veterinarian to actively administer a drug to let them go so they don't suffer. Our pets deserve more than our loved ones who are human? This makes no sense. It's okay to deny water and food so that inevitable death is both painful and drawn out, but it's not okay to administer a sedative that will allow a pain free, swift and peaceful death to a human person who would like to have that choice? The CHOICE is what they're fighting for. Once the option is there, the dying soul may be allowed to enjoy the last weeks, days, minutes, seconds of quality and love in this life without the fear. Do you not see how that can be so incredibly empowering, strengthening and valuable to someone with a terminal illness??

Well I can understand that some doctors might not feel comfortable assisting with even a peaceful death, ending a terrible and incurable disease. And they most certainly should not be required to do so. But there are doctors and nurses who feel otherwise, that would be available to assist. I feel part of the Dilemma lies in the fact that science and medicine has made such huge strides in Prolonging life that Quality of life has been lost in the Shuffle!!

If you're terminally ill and there is no cure, you're already dead. I don't like the term "assisted suicide" in my mind you're not committing suicide if you're already dead. My mother just died August 10th 2016, she had lung cancer, no cure. She only lived for 5 months after being diagnosed. I can't tell you how hard it was for me to go visit her in her last days and seeing her suffer. I wish she had this option, the doctors did their best to make her as comfortable as they could but it wasn't enough. She'd be sitting in bed in so much pain begging for someone to help her, help me, help me. You have to stand there trying to comfort her with words knowing there is nothing you can do. Why should anyone have to go through that if they don't want to? It's our own selfishness that doesn't want to let our dying loved one go but we're not the one suffering. If people want to die peacefully before their illness takes over I say that's their choice and they should have that right.
This doctor would rather allow someone to die of thirst instead of having a doctor help them die peacefully. I do not understand why more people aren't outraged by his statements.

Michelle Robinson he is so ridiculous! What he doesn't understand is that people deserve choice. Just because he doesn't feel comfortable with it doesn't mean he has to provide any of those end of life therapies. I would like to know what he would say if he was in this woman's shoes or god forbid worst. Starving or dehydrating someone to death is a most terrible way to pass away. It just seems like these doctors are more worried about their careers and possibly religious beliefs than they are worried about people.
I will be better when people STOP calling assisted dying as SUICIDE. It is NOT suicide. It is helping a hopelessly painfully terminal person, to avoid the final tortures and agony at the end. You don't even let you dog go through that, so we should all have the right to chose when we die in these circumstances.

Maria, we are animals also. I had to put my 16 year old companion(German Shepherd service dog) down because he was suffering.. I'll never get another and wish that suffering would give Drs the legal right to assist suicide since they (opiod crises) they are taking my medication that helps me function away. The pain becomes unbearable and there is nothing I can do but buy heroin off the street. Who knows, maybe I will die if I do a whole bunch of it. I can buy some every month till I have enough to overdose. Being in terrible chronic pain makes life impossible to enjoy at all.
@@mariannebradley6905 I hate that they did that to you. Please try Methadone. Have you ever thought or tried that route? It's super easy. I'm on Methadone and it's amazing. It helps me function day to day and makes life worth living. It's not expensive. 10 dollars a day. Sometimes they have specials if your new. You can find your local clinic and just call and find out when they are excepting new patients and go and you will get your first does that day. I get take homes as well. I only go in 2 weeks. But you have to have clean drug screens. It saddens me to think your going this way. Heroin is dangerous and I don't want to see you die. Just think about the Methadone, ok? It may help! I can’t imagine that people with terminal illness have had to struggle and battle. I’ve worked in nursing 15 years seeing people being forced alive by tube feeds they pull out so we restrain them and force feed them. Our system is broken. And these people need to be given the dignity and respect to choose when there done and tired of fighting and ready to exit this life. Why should it be okay, we nourish them with intravenous fluids and tube fed and prolonging the inevitable and making there suffering longer and more painful. Who are we to give these people no dignity at the end of there lives! 💯% I believe these people should have control at least In there leaving this earth in peace 🤍
Often you hear doctors that just have NO COMMON SENSE! The Dr. fighting against assisted suicide, I just don't understand his point? This is not giving Drs. the right to kill, it is giving Drs the right to ASSIST, and only if the person asks for it!
laws like that can morph all too quickly into "letting" others die that are in the way, it happens already, I've seen it. they just morphine patch them out when they want them gone. they may not be in pain, but morphine is a respiratory depressant so they give it to them. It's maddening to watch a family and a doctor collaborate on this.

I understand there are people out there that will "blur" the lines and possibly use it as a means to 'get rid of' certain people with ailments or of old age that they deem expendable. This should be a no brainer. If a mentally competent person has been diagnosed with a terminal condition and wants to end their life before things get too severe, thatbis nobody's business but theirs. The law should butt out. If someone is in constant pain and medication is not working, leave them alone to make that decision. I believe pharmaceutical companies don't want this law passed because they would lose big money because no one would need their drugs. Legislators are getting kickbacks to vote against making this legal. No government agency should have the right to participate in such a personal decision.

I knew Gloria 30 years ago. Her Harley was amazing. I was friends with her buddy. I was about 7 months pregnant. Gloria was President of AIM and there was an AIM dance in Kelowna, BC...I borrowed a pair of Black jeans from her to wear that night.. Party was great but days later I had washed them but wrong load...I put bleach in the water...OMG I was freakin". She was disappointed of course, I felt like crap. She was a wonderful lady.
Hi I just want to say, I think she died peacefully in the hospital because she believed in God and Jesus. So Jesus didn't let her go through with assisted suicide. I saw in other documentaries that the nurses who perform assisted suicide some of them wear pentagrams and they will give out a cocktail of poison (it's the way of the devil). Jesus saved her from that. I think she is with Jesus now. Don't ever choose assisted suicide. I think there is a difference in accepting a glass of poison and just asking for no care. Don't even accept a glass of medication to cause death (lots of countries are doing this now and it is evil). Choose Jesus Christ. God and Jesus love her very much, you can tell in her heart she chose them. Life can be painful especially in our end days, but never ever choose to take some kind of potion to die even if it's labled as care. Just choose Jesus and He will make your suffering light and you will have eternal life. God Bless :)

this hurt me watching this, I lost my mom to ALS last year, I watched her go down hill 3 years before she finally had enough and made them take the bi-pap off her that was keeping her alive, she lost the use of her legs, but could still eat and feed her self, was losing the strength in her hands, mom was in a wheelchair, but unlike this lady, my mom'd dr was no help, I wouldn't wish ALS on my worst enemy, after seeing what it does to somebody, I pray that some day they find a cure for this, my mom was only 65 when she died, family was no support either everybody stopped talking to me after she died, aunts, uncles, only my 2 brothers talk to me and very rarely...whoever has this, I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this, I pray that some day you find peace
I'm so sorry honey. I KNOW what it is like to be the ONLY one out of a large family to "carry the load" & then be rejected afterward. That's just how some people are. I've come to realize that every single person is actually "alone" in this world. That's "why" we need "faith" in something/someone greater than ourselves &/or another human. May all our moms RIP.

My grandmother had Parkinson's Disease. Like ALS, it is a no-cure degenerative disease that ultimately results in a loss of mobility, motor function, and basic tasks like eating and even breathing become very difficult and painful. My grandma ended her life by putting a plastic shopping bag over her head and suffocating herself. This was in the 1980's, before euthanasia began to become a hot button issue. I have very clear memories of her and even as a child I knew she was miserable. She should not have had to die this way. Two of my other grandparents wasted away and suffered way too much at the ends of their lives and respective health issues. Every person is on their own spiritual path in this life, death is a highly personal issue and if a rational person with a terminal illness decides they wish to peaceably end their own life, they should be allowed to do so without the government interfering or charging a willing doctor with a crime for helping a patent to pass from this life in a comfortable and dignified manner. What an amazing , awesome old biker lady Gloria was! She had an incredibly positive attitude despite her tremendous burdens. I hope I have the same attitude when I am old. My grandpa's older sister (she's almost 87) has Parkinson's as well, I don't visit her that much but everytime someone talks about her they tell me that she simply doesn't want to live anymore bc of her health issues... Everytime I watch or read something about assisted suicide I think about her, it would be a totally human and dignified passing for her And another thing: bc of Parkinson's and even bc of her age itself she needs care 24/7 which makes her VERY depressed since she always was very independent... Basically she's only suffering here Unfortunately this is not even discussed in Brazil, which makes me sad
My late husband died with Parkindons disease. He chose to live until he died. He died in ltc from the disease with me by his side. He also felt, like I do: God gave us life, we have no right to play God and take it away ourselves.
Im so sorry! I work in neurology for 30 years and we have many Parkinson's patients. Its terrible to watch them deteriorate over time. Even when they have the deep brain stimulation surgery - it does help for a while. It appears to be a miracle at first, but the disease ultimately gets you in the end. So sad. RIP Grandma. She is flying with the Angels now.
Starving someone to death is wrong giving them the means to die in dignity if you starve an animal you would be prosecuted but it's ok to stave people who are ill ?
Lesley Allinson They’re essentially starved and dehydrated while deeply sedated/comatose, not that that makes it any better. It’s considered letting nature take its course which is why nobody would be prosecuted. I agree it isn’t right. I believe and support assisted suicide one hundred percent.

I agree 100% to legalize assistant suicide. I think most people fear being a vegetable or in such severe pain you want to die, but not "able" to do so. As the one guy said it "we are more humane to our pets, than people". It will be legalized one day, I hope. Blessings to this lady, her family, and friends.

As a person with chronic, severe, uncontrolled pain who's been on mid-dose opioids for many years that now only offer nominal relief but b/c of the opioid crisis drs won't give me anything stronger. So, I've planned my own exit strategy for when the pain becomes so bad I can't take it anymore. I haven't told anyone about the specifics of my plan, but I have told family of my intentions.
my grandma had this and they gave her 3 to 5 years once she got diagnosed and she lived to her 3 year when she died... in the end is what hurts the most when they can't swallow or crippled up so bad she could not move... I miss her so much..she passed away on my birthday
In Switzerland we have Dignitas, they help people to die and people from allover the world are coming to Switzerland to end live in dignity. It should be possible in all countrys 😍
I totally believe that someone who is terminally ill and does not want to go through the pain and suffering should be able to end their life in a dignified way. No one should have to suffer because people think "it's wrong" to have assisted suicide. I always believed that Dr. Kevorkian was a compassionate doctor who believed in helping people who were ready to die due to their disease. I do, of course, believe this has to be set up legally so the person will die peacefully and their decision respected.
I just don't get why people would fight against this. They'd rather let someone suffer all the way to the end, than to let them pass in peace as comfortable as possible. It's THEIR life afterall
Ann Marie By that same logic, we should never go to the doctor or use modern medicine since God is the one who ordains life. God gave individuals the autonomy over their own lives. Yes, as a Christian it’s probably against God’s word for us to do that. But everyone is allowed to practice their own beliefs and live life on their own terms. That is the freedom Christ gave us. Not everyone is a Christian.

Cleft Sie ~ Yes, life is full of pain. I personally deal with chronic pain every day. At this point I can barely get out of bed. My husbands works, I am no longer able to. My husband does 90% of everything in the house, all the shopping and all the running of errands. At the end of my others lie, she had been 95% confined to her bed. Luckily, my mother died very peacefully in her own bed. I watched her take her last breath. I do know that her last months of life, she prayed to die. It's no life, laying in a bed day after day, the days running in to each other. In my case, I will probably die a horribly painful death after a very long illness. I've been checking in to assisted suicide, not taking it serious at this point, but just checking options. Something I never thought I would do. I just know my pain gets worse every few months. I live on narcotic pain medications at this point, I take them every day. A friend of mine is also thinking about assisted suicide because she is in unbearable pain every day and he Dr just took away one of her pain medication. It's very hard to,live this way. A burden to those around you, your family and friends. It's no picnic and I can fully understand those who want to die. ✌️❤️✌️

"Do no harm" oath that doctors take should be upheld by everyone in that position.....but doing no harm by starving and causing deadly dehydration. How is that NO harm?! Dying peacefully is A LOT better than being sedated and slowly DIE! Either way...she is dying. It should no doubt be HER choice, NOT some goon wearing a suit and tie. As someone with a chronic illness if I get to the point of dying I would never want to go through palliative care. My body, my choice, my death.
Why on earth we don't have the right to make this most personal decision, about our own lives is beyond me. Why do we let the government decide what is right for each of us individually? If I were in Gloria's state of health, I would want the choice to end my life before suffering.
It's not a problem with the government so much as it is a problem with religion, in my view. At least, this is the case in the US, where we have a secular constitution and a secular government, but many devoutly religious elected (and appointed) officials at all levels.

Watching poor Gloria's muscles twitch brought tears to my eyes... I knew someone who had ALS. Living in a state that allowed it, he did utilize assisted suicide and went out on his own terms.. he is sorely missed.
If you've lived with and cared for someone slowly dying and in constant pain, unable to do anything, and I mean anything, no matter how much morphine and other pain meds they give you, you would understand and support this amazing lady's decision. RIP momma❤️
My uncle was diagnosed with ALS within 6 months he passed he went from gardening fishing to not being able to do simple tasks it was a rough time once he passed still processing and accepting it but this women is so strong

i nursed my beautiful husband,through cancer.he also asked me to help end his life,he tried to do it himself but couldn't swollow his morphine.i called pallative care.he went in and still suffered horrifically all through.to see someone who I love so very dearly suffer was horrific and it took a great many years to get over the hurt he went through and I still remember it to this day. if someone is suffering from a terminal illness let them chose i pray to god it gets through parliament someday soon
RIP Gloria. I have been present at 2 deaths, was there the day before 1, within a week of 2 and on the phone just before 2 others died. I've seen loved ones end of life too many times and found my brother after suicide. So I think I can say that my mom, grandmom, and grandfather would have preferred to not end their lives that way - barely able to breathe, starving, doped up, and unable to clean yourself or know anything. The death rattle for 3 days, 1 week, & 2 weeks (slow decline) respectively were not dignity. Mom especially didn't want that. I spoke to my great aunt Doris the day before (one of the 2 on the phone) and was able to tell her how much I loved her but she had the foresight of making a legal DNR. She had almost died the year before and she wasn't going through that again nor did she want her son prosecuted if he didn't call 911. He was given a rough time but in the end it was okay. It's sad that it's okay to traumatize everyone around you by having them watch this end of life cycle. I don't know how I'd feel in her situation but, and this is unfortunate, until you actually go through it with a loved one you can't know how tough it is on them. (I'm adding this because it needs to be said - end of life care or the PC term palliative care is expensive very, very expensive. Wonder how much that plays into the actions of the people against an assisted suicide law?)

They also make a very good living keeping people alive giving medications that don’t even work & send so many into major debt. I have MS & Suffer so much & I have no way out, I cannot run away from my body to end my pain. All my words fall on deaf ears 😭

I don't understand why and how it's okay for a doctor to stop treatment on a patients request and to let patients starve to death and stop drinking when they can give fluid and food through tubes. But they won't help people already dying to die with dignity with medication. The crap about them having a doctor/patient connection is just that, crap. That connection should be the reason for them helping a human to end the relentless excruciating pain and torment.
Interesting to note , in my experience it is not the patient requesting to remove feeding or breathing tubes, it is in fact, a doctor and medical team who say ok ... you have this “option “ because nothing more can be done so you can starve to death.
Don't blame the doctors. It's against the law to assist patients to die. Blame your law makers. Remember what happened to Kevorkian? He was sent to prison for helping patients die. No doctor wants to spend 20 years in prison. Do you?
21:30 witholding fluids means a 3 day HORRENDOUS way to die. I've seen it MANY times as my aunt runs a adult care home, albeit she does her best to get them to drink, but when they refuse and there's nothing left that she can do, she just spends the entire three days at their side. Telling them it's OKAY to let go, which crazily enough if the fastest way for them to die as it'll change from a 3-5 day ordeal to a 18hr one as if they're begging for permission to stop fighting.
My father, who had lung and brain cancer had fluids withdrawn, and survived for 5 days in hideous agony. He was also on a syringe driver...Now, I would be overjoyed to be able to administer a self-suicidal overdose to end the pain and suffering....I am depressed and uncomfortable that when it comes my time to die, even then, no-one can help me to die with dignity...Frightening, in 2021 😔
One of my younger brothers, a high raking officer in the airforce, was taken by this horrible disease. It is a horrible thing for them to have to live through the trama and idignity of this monster. I have always been a firm believer in dying without pain and preserving what dignity that person still has. I have also been a nurse for the past 37 years and seen more than my fair share of death. People should be allowed to make these decisions and others need to learn to butt out and quit trying to do things that will only make themselves feel better. This includes certain religions that would think of this as murder. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS, you are not the one sufering.

I highly respect those countries where this procedure has been approved. Just gotta love all of those able bodied, pain free people trying to make decisions about our deaths for us. As someone who lives every single day of my life in pain, the fact that able bodied people making decisions about my right to die with dignity is absolutely abhorrent. If you’ve never walked a mile in the very same shoes that I can’t escape from, don’t you dare presume to tell me when I’m ready to hang those shoes up.
She's an amazing woman and when she said "if you cared about me you'd put me out of my misery" I cried because I understand the amount of pain she must be dealing with. I've been dealing with really bad stomach bleeding, and not being able to use the restroom unless I use tons of medications, and after countless hospital visits they still don't know what's wrong with me. And my parents don't know what to do, and they are kind at a point where they are too tired to try anything else, so I just stay at home dealing with the pain. And now the medicines have stopped working as of a few days ago and I don't know what I'm going to do. They said I might need a bag in my stomach and I'm only 19 years old, but I'm in so much physical pain everyday due to the side effects of the medicines and the constant discomfort. I don't want to live my life like this because I couldn't do the things I wanted to do in life, due to medical issues. I don't know what to do at this point..

Dying with Dignity should be legalised for terminally ill people worldwide, people should be given the choice of how they want to pass. There is nothing more heartbreaking then watching a loved one dying in pain and suffering. I know that should anything happen to me I would definitely be passing over my way and my time.

Simple, terminally ill patients do not want to die. Every moment is precious, but there is the issue of free will and the realization that death no mater how doped up you are, can be painful and degrading. Most well adjusted people who are given the option of being able to end their lives, usually choose to die of natural causes because any good day is not the day to end one's pain, even with the suicide kit in the bedside drawer.
It's a lot more complex than that. God gave us "dominion" over the animals, which means authority over them and responsibility for them. Not so with humans j- Thou shalt not kill (Hebrew word "murder"). Way different ball game there.
As a nurse I’m a firm believer that people have the right to die with dignity. If we are responsible for the quality of life we live then we should be allowed to have a quality death.
To the DR who refuses to help Gloria die with dignity : If it were YOU or someone YOU love lying in a bed and slowly dying, unable to eat,walk,talk,dress yourself, use the toilet,sit up or have any semblance of a life, you might be singing a different tune. Do you have no compassion whatsoever??Every competent human being on this earth has the right to die with dignity and to die on their own terms.

I agreed with Gloria, I too would rather have someone tell me "hey! you're going to die. That's OK, it's a natural process."(although it may involve a way to hasten that death). I support it because although my other died quietly, my uncle did not. He died alone. skin and bones, with half of his face gone. If I could give him the wish to die, I would do so. Even more than my uncle and my mother, was my grandfather. When my grandfather was in hospice he could not respond with words. I still remember how he looked skin and bones. I asked him, "Are you in pain grandpa?" and despite being drugged up, he nodded to me. I asked then "does it hurt that bad?" and he nodded again. Then I asked him "Is this the drugs talking? Are you really feeling pain?". This time he shook his head horizontal for the first, and up and down to the second, I told him that if I could I would take away that pain for him. If an individual is still experiencing such pain, that they experience it while they have been drugged up, then I fulling wish, no, I hope they get put out as soon as possible. While people may not like such an idea. I personally feel it is an extreme relief from such pain. The kind of pain that despite the medicine, you still FEEL it! For my grandfather, if I had the choice I would have killed him, because yes he was suffering, and he wanted to die! This is something that needs to be discussed, despite how much it may hurt to talk about. Death is the ultimate destiny of all life (even cells), these discussions need to be talked about. To me, my mother, uncles', and grandfathers death, is proof to me, that more options need to be explored.
I was a teenager in the '60s and I've been giving society the finger ever since. I always did exactly what I wanted to do and didn't ask anybody's permission. That's not going to change when it's my time to die. I'll take an overdose and be done with it if I'm in pain and suffering. Even if I wasn't suffering I should still be able to decide when I die. If I'm 104 and I've just had it with life that's the end of the story. I think we live many lives so we understand what experiencing is. Our souls go beyond the mere flesh of a lifetime.

Mark lyon I agree with you. I'm 76 yrs old & I can only hope this law passes so people can have the option of choosing when to die. I have been diagnosed with Lupus when the time comes I want to be able when to die. Lupus is an automune disease that eats your own muscles & etc. No cure, I want to be able to make that choice.

When my little sister (well, youngest sister) at 38 with 4 year old son and 3 year old twin daughters was diagnosed with cancer and given 6 months to live, I quit my job and took turns with my mom to care for her at home until her death. The pain and horror of the cancer, not to mention the deep bedsores, will always haunt me. During her last 3 days, she was in pain so bad that with every breath she moaned so loud, despite being on maximum morphine drip. Our hospice nurse quietly, without any word, showed my other sister, a nurse, the port in the morphine machine. When my beautiful, loving little sister was in such pain and was nothing but skin and bones, was suffering so horribly, my sister withdrew the contents of the morphine pump and inserted it into the lower port, while all of us held it, together, and pushed. Her kids are in their 20’s now and they couldn’t be more loved. Anyone who has had a loved one suffer so horribly with no hope, and still deny that loved one relief and peace, is only considering their own mental state. I love you Patty, I miss you so much and will see you soon.

Ur beautiful sister sounded like she died around the same time as y mother I was 22 she was 57. I was obsessed with her care. The suffering cancer caused her and all of us was so traumatic it feel like it happened yesterday not almost 19 years ago. And her love and guidance is still with me: at the end her organs liquified and started to exit her body while she was awake and conscious. Only then did they put her in an induced coma. I don’t know how that’s care. May both our beautiful girls rip

My mum was murdered in a hospital
On a morphine pump & comatose, no food or water, just bonked out of her brain for 2weeks until she died. My mum was a strong woman. This all happened in 2005. I'm crying as I write. Mum would have liked to have had the opportunity to die with dignity, not suffer for two weeks
When she died I was with her. You should have seen the size of the blisters on her tongue. I'm writing this in 2020 & it still upsets me. I love mum so much & hated to see her die like she did. The two weeks it took her to die wasn't palliative care, it was traumatic & mum was treated worse than an animal. At least animals can be put down.

I am so very sorry your Mum and you had to go through that. There is a thing called medical trauma and it sounds like that's what you went through. My Dad was also tortured in a hospital - pharmaceutically incarcerated. He was pumped full of drugs for the last two months of his life until his spirit finally had enough and checked out. I hope you have had some healing from that pain

I'm terminally ill with esophageal cancer, and I have seriously considered assisted suicide once things get to the point that the pain is unbearable. I tend to think the doctor so vehemently against the right to die with dignity sees this as a threat to the continuing income the medical professionals derive from people who are dying. The longer the death drags on, the more money in some doctor's pocket.
Frankly, it's none of the government's business if I decide to end my life to escape an agonizing death. Some states here in the USA apparently agree, as they've passed such provisions on their laws.
Dave Seavy , hello, I am in Canada and am up very late here as it is nearly 3 am where I am, but my chronic pain conditions and their effects are just slightly unbearable as far as sleeping goes so here I am, watching dear Gloria's video and have been crying off and on watching her. I watched a very good friend pass from a terminal illness in 1999, but it's like it was yesterday seeing him and what he went thru.
I know we don't know each other, but when I saw your comment and that you posted not long ago(it says one hour currently) I wanted to reply to you, I just felt compelled to.
I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis and I hope whether you ever see my reply or not that you will not suffer. That you have your needs and wants met and even love and friendship and anything to make the future of your life easier Not harder for you. I just wanted to tell you there's something about your words and comment....that boldly reached out to me and I think you are a level-minded kind man and I just want you to know I care and will not forget this very brief moment I shared across the country with you even if it's one sided.... Dave I lost my Dad to the same thing. He got his from acid re-flux over many years. Didn't smoke, didn't drink and was just before the "purple pill" that I now take for the exact same condition he had before mine turns cancerous. I watched my Dad from beginning to end so I'm not just talking out of my behind when I say YOU are a strong guy, you are a human being who deserves the choice to decide when to go. I feel with that diagnosis you should be leaving the hospital with the beginning approvals needed to have that choice. What you are dealing with is no small battle and I understand that. I wish the very best wishes in your journey and I hope you get as much comfort care as they can provide.

I've had dogs for over 20 years. The worst problem when they get terminally sick is that they can't tell us when it's time. We have to guess, so we leave with feelings of remorse, guilt, some uncertainty that we made the right decision at the right time, not wanting to steal a single day from them, but not wanting to see them suffer for a day too long. What I'd give for them to tell me! So here we have *HUMAN BEINGS* in the same situation, able to communicate their pain, their wishes, their reasoning, and we ignore them???? I've talked with my veterinarian at length about this. He sees this part of his job as his least favorite, but he calls it "a GIFT to be able to at least do for animals what we won't even do for each other." I've looked my animal companions in the eyes as they pass, wanting to share their last moments. It's not easy, but it's the best I can give them in the worst of times; *they've EARNED the best death I can give them in return for a lifetime of friendship and love. Why can't we do this for each other??* I would want someone to do this for me.
FYI: At a university animal hospital, I asked one of the student interns, *"how will I know when it's time?"* I knew already that they couldn't tell me specifically, but I've used his answer as a guide ever since. (Insert long pause) Paraphrasing, but exactly what I took away: "When he's no longer a dog. He won't be interested in his toys or even special treats. He won't care about rides or walks. If you wait 'too long' he won't even be able to care because the pain will be too much. He won't care who you are at that point, so don't expect him to raise his head when you call his name if he can't even eat. If nothing interests him, and he can't even bare to recall who you are, you waited 'too long,' so do it _before that_ is my best suggestion." *This isn't about murder; it's about mercy.*

Totally agree. I'm just sad that it seems that most people who oppose assisted death are not I'll or have never been chronically ill, or lived with someone with terminal illness. I'm hoping the more we film and talk about illnesses and mental health....the more they will understand and show empathy. I'm chronically I'll and bed ridden and deteriorating fast, and have already contacted dignitas in Switzerland. I too, want the option . After seeing my father being resuscitated and manipulated by doctors etc, when he suffered a terminal illness and was basically a vegetable at the end .......it made me wish he had an option. He suffered such a long miserable pain filled time facing the ceiling. He was blind and deaf as well...... he died 20 years ago.
Hopefully this video shows times have changed....and slowly everyone will realise it needs to be available for everyone.

Being a nurse that has taken care of countless wonderful human beings in their last hours I can tell you most if they had a chance would have done exactly this and they came from all walks of life, I've been around it enough to know if I'm terminal I'm not going out like that I'll have what Gloria is having thank you very much❤❤

Thank you Sue and Gloria. My Mum was able to live her last 100 days of life with determination and happiness. Mum took M.A.I.D. in February 2021 after a short but debilitating diagnosis. She was able to love, renounce her mistakes and enjoy her favourite pastimes and meals. Her heart was lifted by the choices and determination she had until her last minutes. Although very difficult for me, I am forever grateful she had this choice.
The granddaughter is such a cute little girl. The grandmother was a sweet person too. Rest in peace grandma.

My grandmother had ALS. Awful & deteriorating disease. At first she started falling down, and then she started loosing all mobility. Then, she couldn't even speak anymore. I learned to read and write in russian ( i speak fluently, due to it being my familys first language) and would write with her. Before i moved she wrote to me 'I love you' and then lost her ability to even write. She became awfully moody (which i dont blame her) and the second she'd see me she'd start crying. She cried looking at just about anything. 1 year after, she passed. I will forever miss her, and would take walks around the park in brooklyn where we used to go and start crying. However, she's free and forever missed. I pray for those struggling with ALS and hope to find a cure soon. What a strong and beautiful woman. Rest in peace.

I was with my dad when he died from cancer, and it was both a blessing to be by his side during his final moments but also incredibly distressing to see what he had to endure. His lungs filled up with tumors, as they spread, and fluid. He was on bi-pap to assist in his breathing, and when all of his kids were home and he knew we were there with him by his side, he asked to be taken off. He was given morphine via IV in both his hand and chest, and it caused him to feel extremely hot and then cold and he was so uncomfortable, until he eventually went into a coma. A nurse was supposed to see him every hour to ensure he was getting the IV doses to alleviate his pain, and that occurred most of the time over the course of 12+ hours. However, it was not always possible and he'd flinch and appeared to be in pain. He'd gurgle and make wincing sounds from time to time, and my mother eventually cried and told him it was okay to just let go and we would be okay. It was so heartbreaking, and he eventually passed on. No one should ever have to endure pain and suffering, and I'm sure those opposed to dying with dignity will have a very different point of view if faced with a terminal illness that causes extreme pain and suffering. We need to stop referring to it as "assisted suicide" and religious beliefs need to be kept out of politics altogether. If you believe it's immoral, don't do it. We should all have the right to be an active participant in our end of life care, including whether we want to put an end to our pain and suffering.

I was a caregiver for a gal with ALS. When I started she was able to walk and talk, they gave her a year or two at most. This gal survives for seven years. I was with her when they put in her feeding tube, then two years later when they put in her trachea/breathing tube. It was terrible watching this gal who was so vibrant and amazing go through everything she went through. It took seven years for her to finally go, but when she did she was just a shell of her former self. I full support Doctor assisted suicides, i believe that if you want to control it and go out with dignity on your own account, you should be able to.

I can't imagine being ready to die, where I am in life now. But the thought of losing all control while my mind worked perfectly well is terrifying. To think you lose control of your limbs, movement, even to the point of losing control of your bowels so someone is constantly cleaning up after you, while you lie in a bed with a fully functioning brain is just torture. There is no dignity in having people do all that for you! If I was in a court situation I would want to get them all to close their eyes and talk through all the loss they would have, get them to imagine that situation, if they still come out of that image saying it's a fine way to die, then there is something wrong with them!!!

When we, as a collective, stop referring to this as "suicide" and begin calling it what it is - death with dignity and part of our free will as a human being - we can start having rational discussions that aren't about semantics. We decide when a pet is in too much pain and we allow a veterinarian to actively administer a drug to let them go so they don't suffer. Our pets deserve more than our loved ones who are human? This makes no sense. It's okay to deny water and food so that inevitable death is both painful and drawn out, but it's not okay to administer a sedative that will allow a pain free, swift and peaceful death to a human person who would like to have that choice? The CHOICE is what they're fighting for. Once the option is there, the dying soul may be allowed to enjoy the last weeks, days, minutes, seconds of quality and love in this life without the fear. If you're terminally ill and there is no cure, you're already dead. I don't like the term "assisted suicide" in my mind you're not committing suicide if you're already dead. My mother just died August 10th 2016, she had lung cancer, no cure. She only lived for 5 months after being diagnosed. I can't tell you how hard it was for me to go visit her in her last days and seeing her suffer. I wish she had this option, the doctors did their best to make her as comfortable as they could but it wasn't enough. She'd be sitting in bed in so much pain begging for someone to help her, help me, help me. You have to stand there trying to comfort her with words knowing there is nothing you can do. Why should anyone have to go through that if they don't want to? It's our own selfishness that doesn't want to let our dying loved one go but we're not the one suffering. If people want to die peacefully before their illness takes over I say that's their choice and they should have that right.

Maria, we are animals also. I had to put my 16 year old companion(German Shepherd service dog) down because he was suffering.. I'll never get another and wish that suffering would give Drs the legal right to assist suicide since they (opiod crises) they are taking my medication that helps me function away. The pain becomes unbearable and there is nothing I can do but buy heroin off the street. Who knows, maybe I will die if I do a whole bunch of it. I can buy some every month till I have enough to overdose. Being in terrible chronic pain makes life impossible to enjoy at all.

It helps me function day to day and makes life worth living. It's not expensive. 10 dollars a day. Sometimes they have specials if your new. You can find your local clinic and just call and find out when they are excepting new patients and go and you will get your first does that day.
I get take homes as well.
I only go in 2 weeks.
But you have to have clean drug screens.

I can’t imagine that people with terminal illness have had to struggle and battle. I’ve worked in nursing 15 years seeing people being forced alive by tube feeds they pull out so we restrain them and force feed them. Our system is broken. And these people need to be given the dignity and respect to choose when there done and tired of fighting and ready to exit this life. Why should it be okay, we nourish them with intravenous fluids and tube fed and prolonging the inevitable and making there suffering longer and more painful. Who are we to give these people no dignity at the end of there lives! 💯% I believe these people should have control at least In there leaving this earth in peace 🤍

There is a fine line, but there is a fine line to a lot of things in life. Also, I feel the line is blatantly clear. I understand there are people out there that will "blur" the lines and possibly use it as a means to 'get rid of' certain people with ailments or of old age that they deem expendable. This should be a no brainer. If a mentally competent person has been diagnosed with a terminal condition and wants to end their life before things get too severe, thatbis nobody's business but theirs. The law should butt out. If someone is in constant pain and medication is not working, leave them alone to make that decision. I knew Gloria 30 years ago. Her Harley was amazing. I was friends with her buddy. I was about 7 months pregnant. Gloria was President of AIM and there was an AIM dance in Kelowna, BC...I borrowed a pair of Black jeans from her to wear that night.. Party was great but days later I had washed them but wrong load...I put bleach in the water...OMG I was freakin". She was disappointed of course, I felt like crap. She was a wonderful lady.
Hi I just want to say, I think she died peacefully in the hospital because she believed in God and Jesus. So Jesus didn't let her go through with assisted suicide. I saw in other documentaries that the nurses who perform assisted suicide some of them wear pentagrams and they will give out a cocktail of poison (it's the way of the devil).
Jesus saved her from that. I think she is with Jesus now. Don't ever choose assisted suicide. I think there is a difference in accepting a glass of poison and just asking for no care. Don't even accept a glass of medication to cause death (lots of countries are doing this now and it is evil). Choose Jesus Christ. God and Jesus love her very much, you can tell in her heart she chose them. Life can be painful especially in our end days, but never ever choose to take some kind of potion to die even if it's labled as care. Just choose Jesus and He will make your suffering light and you will have eternal life. God Bless :)

this hurt me watching this, I lost my mom to ALS last year, I watched her go down hill 3 years before she finally had enough and made them take the bi-pap off her that was keeping her alive, she lost the use of her legs, but could still eat and feed her self, was losing the strength in her hands, mom was in a wheelchair, but unlike this lady, my mom'd dr was no help, I wouldn't wish ALS on my worst enemy, after seeing what it does to somebody, I pray that some day they find a cure for this, my mom was only 65 when she died, family was no support either everybody stopped talking to me after she died, aunts, uncles, only my 2 brothers talk to me and very rarely...whoever has this, I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this, I pray that some day you find peace

My grandmother had Parkinson's Disease. Like ALS, it is a no-cure degenerative disease that ultimately results in a loss of mobility, motor function, and basic tasks like eating and even breathing become very difficult and painful. My grandma ended her life by putting a plastic shopping bag over her head and suffocating herself. This was in the 1980's, before euthanasia began to become a hot button issue. I have very clear memories of her and even as a child I knew she was miserable. She should not have had to die this way. Two of my other grandparents wasted away and suffered way too much at the ends of their lives and respective health issues. Every person is on their own spiritual path in this life, death is a highly personal issue and if a rational person with a terminal illness decides they wish to peaceably end their own life, they should be allowed to do so without the government interfering or charging a willing doctor with a crime for helping a patent to pass from this life in a comfortable and dignified manner. What an amazing , awesome old biker lady Gloria was! She had an incredibly positive attitude despite her tremendous burdens. I hope I have the same attitude when I am old. Rest in peace, grandma and Gloria.
My grandpa's older sister (she's almost 87) has Parkinson's as well, I don't visit her that much but everytime someone talks about her they tell me that she simply doesn't want to live anymore bc of her health issues... Everytime I watch or read something about assisted suicide I think about her, it would be a totally human and dignified passing for her
And another thing: bc of Parkinson's and even bc of her age itself she needs care 24/7 which makes her VERY depressed since she always was very independent... Basically she's only suffering here

My late husband died with Parkindons disease. He chose to live until he died. He died in ltc from the disease with me by his side. He also felt, like I do: God gave us life, we have no right to play God and take it away ourselves.
Im so sorry! I work in neurology for 30 years and we have many Parkinson's patients. Its terrible to watch them deteriorate over time. Even when they have the deep brain stimulation surgery - it does help for a while. It appears to be a miracle at first, but the disease ultimately gets you in the end. So sad. RIP Grandma. She is flying with the Angels now.

I agree 100% to legalize assistant suicide. I think most people fear being a vegetable or in such severe pain you want to die, but not "able" to do so. As a person with chronic, severe, uncontrolled pain who's been on mid-dose opioids for many years that now only offer nominal relief but b/c of the opioid crisis drs won't give me anything stronger.
So, I've planned my own exit strategy for when the pain becomes so bad I can't take it anymore.
I haven't told anyone about the specifics of my plan, but I have told family of my intentions.
my grandma had this and they gave her 3 to 5 years once she got diagnosed and she lived to her 3 year when she died... in the end is what hurts the most when they can't swallow or crippled up so bad she could not move... I miss her so much..she passed away on my birthday

I totally believe that someone who is terminally ill and does not want to go through the pain and suffering should be able to end their life in a dignified way. No one should have to suffer because people think "it's wrong" to have assisted suicide. I always believed that Dr. Kevorkian was a compassionate doctor who believed in helping people who were ready to die due to their disease. I do, of course, believe this has to be set up legally so the person will die peacefully and their decision respected.

Cleft Sie ~ Yes, life is full of pain. I personally deal with chronic pain every day. At this point I can barely get out of bed. My husbands works, I am no longer able to. My husband does 90% of everything in the house, all the shopping and all the running of errands. At the end of my others lie, she had been 95% confined to her bed. Luckily, my mother died very peacefully in her own bed. I watched her take her last breath. I do know that her last months of life, she prayed to die. It's no life, laying in a bed day after day, the days running in to each other. In my case, I will probably die a horribly painful death after a very long illness. I've been checking in to assisted suicide, not taking it serious at this point, but just checking options. Something I never thought I would do. I just know my pain gets worse every few months. I live on narcotic pain medications at this point, I take them every day. A friend of mine is also thinking about assisted suicide because she is in unbearable pain every day and he Dr just took away one of her pain medication. It's very hard to,live this way. A burden to those around you, your family and friends. It's no picnic and I can fully understand those who want to die. ✌️❤️✌️

It's not a problem with the government so much as it is a problem with religion, in my view. At least, this is the case in the US, where we have a secular constitution and a secular government, but many devoutly religious elected (and appointed) officials at all levels.

I knew someone who had ALS. Living in a state that allowed it, he did utilize assisted suicide and went out on his own terms.. he is sorely missed.
If you've lived with and cared for someone slowly dying and in constant pain, unable to do anything, and I mean anything, no matter how much morphine and other pain meds they give you, you would understand and support this amazing lady's decision.

My uncle was diagnosed with ALS within 6 months he passed he went from gardening fishing to not being able to do simple tasks it was a rough time once he passed still processing and accepting it but this women is so strong

i nursed my beautiful husband,through cancer.he also asked me to help end his life,he tried to do it himself but couldn't swollow his morphine.i called pallative care.he went in and still suffered horrifically all through.to see someone who I love so very dearly suffer was horrific and it took a great many years to get over the hurt he went through and I still remember it to this day. if someone is suffering from a terminal illness let them chose i pray to god it gets through parliament someday soon

I have been present at 2 deaths, was there the day before 1, within a week of 2 and on the phone just before 2 others died. I've seen loved ones end of life too many times and found my brother after suicide. So I think I can say that my mom, grandmom, and grandfather would have preferred to not end their lives that way - barely able to breathe, starving, doped up, and unable to clean yourself or know anything. The death rattle for 3 days, 1 week, & 2 weeks (slow decline) respectively were not dignity. Mom especially didn't want that. I spoke to my great aunt Doris the day before (one of the 2 on the phone) and was able to tell her how much I loved her but she had the foresight of making a legal DNR. She had almost died the year before and she wasn't going through that again nor did she want her son prosecuted if he didn't call 911. He was given a rough time but in the end it was okay.
It's sad that it's okay to traumatize everyone around you by having them watch this end of life cycle. I don't know how I'd feel in her situation but, and this is unfortunate, until you actually go through it with a loved one you can't know how tough it is on them.
(I'm adding this because it needs to be said - end of life care or the PC term palliative care is expensive very, very expensive. Wonder how much that plays into the actions of the people against an assisted suicide law?)

She passed away from dementia and full body cancer 3/1/2020. I signed a dnr for her as I knew I could not let her suffer. I have no regrets on doing that one last kind act on my mom's behalf. Sometimes I feel guild but that's me being selfish. Much love and hugs to you. Also all those who read and who are going through the pain. Xx

I don't understand why and how it's okay for a doctor to stop treatment on a patients request and to let patients starve to death and stop drinking when they can give fluid and food through tubes. But they won't help people already dying to die with dignity with medication. The crap about them having a doctor/patient connection is just that, crap. That connection should be the reason for them helping a human to end the relentless excruciating pain and torment.
Interesting to note , in my experience it is not the patient requesting to remove feeding or breathing tubes, it is in fact, a doctor and medical team who say ok ... you have this “option “ because nothing more can be done so you can starve to death.
Don't blame the doctors. It's against the law to assist patients to die. Blame your law makers. Remember what happened to Kevorkian? He was sent to prison for helping patients die. No doctor wants to spend 20 years in prison. Do you?

21:30 witholding fluids means a 3 day HORRENDOUS way to die. I've seen it MANY times as my aunt runs a adult care home, albeit she does her best to get them to drink, but when they refuse and there's nothing left that she can do, she just spends the entire three days at their side. Telling them it's OKAY to let go, which crazily enough if the fastest way for them to die as it'll change from a 3-5 day ordeal to a 18hr one as if they're begging for permission to stop fighting.
My father, who had lung and brain cancer had fluids withdrawn, and survived for 5 days in hideous agony. He was also on a syringe driver...Now, I would be overjoyed to be able to administer a self-suicidal overdose to end the pain and suffering....I am depressed and uncomfortable that when it comes my time to die, even then, no-one can help me to die with dignity...Frightening, in 2021 😔

One of my younger brothers, a high raking officer in the airforce, was taken by this horrible disease. It is a horrible thing for them to have to live through the trama and idignity of this monster. I have always been a firm believer in dying without pain and preserving what dignity that person still has. I have also been a nurse for the past 37 years and seen more than my fair share of death. People should be allowed to make these decisions and others need to learn to butt out and quit trying to do things that will only make themselves feel better. This includes certain religions that would think of this as murder. MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS, you are not the one sufering.

I highly respect those countries where this procedure has been approved. I am fortunate to live in such a country where assisted dying is allowed for those with terminal illness and, knowing that this method is available, gives comfort to those who are facing life threatening diseases. Just gotta love all of those able bodied, pain free people trying to make decisions about our deaths for us. As someone who lives every single day of my life in pain, the fact that able bodied people making decisions about my right to die with dignity is absolutely abhorrent. If you’ve never walked a mile in the very same shoes that I can’t escape from, don’t you dare presume to tell me when I’m ready to hang those shoes up.
She's an amazing woman and when she said "if you cared about me you'd put me out of my misery" I cried because I understand the amount of pain she must be dealing with. I've been dealing with really bad stomach bleeding, and not being able to use the restroom unless I use tons of medications, and after countless hospital visits they still don't know what's wrong with me. And my parents don't know what to do, and they are kind at a point where they are too tired to try anything else, so I just stay at home dealing with the pain. And now the medicines have stopped working as of a few days ago and I don't know what I'm going to do. They said I might need a bag in my stomach and I'm only 19 years old, but I'm in so much physical pain everyday due to the side effects of the medicines and the constant discomfort. I don't want to live my life like this because I couldn't do the things I wanted to do in life, due to medical issues. I don't know what to do at this point..

I was of course referring to mentally healthy persons. Read online about Dignitas, they say it all.
Simple, terminally ill patients do not want to die. Every moment is precious, but there is the issue of free will and the realization that death no mater how doped up you are, can be painful and degrading. Most well adjusted people who are given the option of being able to end their lives, usually choose to die of natural causes because any good day is not the day to end one's pain, even with the suicide kit in the bedside drawer.
It's a lot more complex than that. God gave us "dominion" over the animals, which means authority over them and responsibility for them. Not so with humans j- Thou shalt not kill (Hebrew word "murder"). Way different ball game there.

Lost a great family friend to this cruel disease, he was my dad best friend, he's health deteriorated so fast that 6 months after the diagnosis he decides to put an end to his suffering while he still can.

I agreed with Gloria, I too would rather have someone tell me "hey! you're going to die. That's OK, it's a natural process."(although it may involve a way to hasten that death). I support it because although my other died quietly, my uncle did not. He died alone. skin and bones, with half of his face gone. If I could give him the wish to die, I would do so. Even more than my uncle and my mother, was my grandfather.
When my grandfather was in hospice he could not respond with words. I still remember how he looked skin and bones. I asked him, "Are you in pain grandpa?" and despite being drugged up, he nodded to me. I asked then "does it hurt that bad?" and he nodded again. Then I asked him "Is this the drugs talking? Are you really feeling pain?". This time he shook his head horizontal for the first, and up and down to the second, I told him that if I could I would take away that pain for him.
If an individual is still experiencing such pain, that they experience it while they have been drugged up, then I fulling wish, no, I hope they get put out as soon as possible. While people may not like such an idea. I personally feel it is an extreme relief from such pain. The kind of pain that despite the medicine, you still FEEL it! For my grandfather, if I had the choice I would have killed him, because yes he was suffering, and he wanted to die!
This is something that needs to be discussed, despite how much it may hurt to talk about. Death is the ultimate destiny of all life (even cells), these discussions need to be talked about. To me, my mother, uncles', and grandfathers death, is proof to me, that more options need to be explored.

I was a teenager in the '60s and I've been giving society the finger ever since. I always did exactly what I wanted to do and didn't ask anybody's permission. That's not going to change when it's my time to die. I'll take an overdose and be done with it if I'm in pain and suffering. Even if I wasn't suffering I should still be able to decide when I die. If I'm 104 and I've just had it with life that's the end of the story. I think we live many lives so we understand what experiencing is. Our souls go beyond the mere flesh of a lifetime.
I think that with certain circumstances a person should be allowed to choose to end the suffering by self-termination

I'm 76 yrs old & I can only hope this law passes so people can have the option of choosing when to die. I have been diagnosed with Lupus when the time comes I want to be able when to die. Lupus is an automune disease that eats your own muscles & etc. No cure, I want to be able to make that choice.
