When they're done, you need to send a deck to Chris Ramsey. He is a fellow youtuber, who is a magician and card collector. This could Definitely introduce you to a new audience and get him a sick deck of cards!
Shading all the way. I usually prefer flat, but the shading rocks. Like the black bg too. Can't wait to play with these :) Man illustrator is so awesome and this art would be perfect in that format, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Also just thanks for that little bit about the struggle, really appreciate you including that and I think we all can feel you on that one.
Stupid idea alert brought to you by lil ol me. You know I'd be Sicky sick if you did a Monopoly board. I want to use it for playing but I would have it set up to show off the art. And you could do some cool characters too like the dog could be Georgie in the game the car could be your car. And instead of go to jail maybe make it go to the art store and pick up more supplies lose a turn
Shading all the way. My daughter and I (rabid fans) agree, this is our order of preference: 1. white only, 2. black frame in frame, 3. black full bleed (Dude, your art is so sick, it doesn’t need black to make it pop).
As someone who has had cards produced, I'd like to advice against the black frame within the white frame. The printing sheet might become slightly misaligned compared to the diecut, which will make the white border thin on one side and thick on the other. Go full white my dude!
Was gonna say that I think the white backer suits the colour scheme better too because the whole thing is done in low saturation colours. The black frame would look great as an art print though.
As a graphic designer with nearly 3 decades of experience, I would agree with this statement. Instead of dumping the black background completely, one can choose to have a wavy or random styled edge. Print out a variety of edges with different left / right offsets to see what the best edge is. Maybe a radiating star pattern would work. You can experiment with the spikiness or alternate between spikes and waves. Or you can displace random shapes along the edge - like cutout displacements.
Black background makes the card harder to “read” when playing, but looks amazing 👌. I’d say go for the dark blue instead of black since it fits the color scheme, and Kickstarter all the way!
honestly the pep talk at 3 minutes on the facts that you struggle with the same stuff i do when making art gave me such a positive wave of inspiration. I did in fact think that people like you who are so talented could flick these kind of works out of their sleeve like it's nothing. thank you so much for clearing that up for me!! luv u tenhun
My boyfriend is a playing card nerd and he is saying that the more ink that's on the card (like the black background) they tend to show wear faster. They look dopeeee
They also tend to clump a bit quicker and feel a bit stiffer just due to the added ink. But i still love my Black Tiger Deck, arguably the deck that started it all.
Love it! But also, the whole point of the Btm Right “Q” is so the card can be easily read and understood upside down, so it has to be facing that direction. Maybe also send it to the foreground even if that means erasing a bit of the drawing?
Do the navy blue background with a gradient around the edges, it would look sick, and if there's any issue with chipping, it won't look as bad because it will be faded out towards white
I think you should collab with another youtuber that also deals a lot with playing cards. For instance, Chris Ramsay is a magician and playing card collector. He also designs his own playing cards. He may be able to add some insight into this project and expand your audience into playing card collectors/magicians.
To add on to that, Chris himself has created a super succesful deck with theory 11 by the name of "momento mori" and he has his own series of decks by the name of "1st" so he's kinda an expert on making playing cards. He can help tenhun with all the rules and stuff
Interesting idea, but I think it would make the composition a bit un balanced. Having all the brighter and catchier colours on one side can work out not very well sometimes.
Yep, as much as I love the art and hate to say it, playing cards designs should be symmetrical. Can you use the art you made, flip/reverse it, and put that on there? As for the design choices you suggested, I like shaded, navy background, with the border. I'd say black background if you're going with a different, coordinating colour scheme for each suit - that way the black stays consistent through out. Also gotta say that I'm excited to see the design for the card back - that's often what catches me and ultimately feels like the most important, as it sets the tone for the whole deck.
One of the many reasons I like your channel, amongst the many, is that you always consider putting on the captions for the hard of hearing community. You totally rock, just for that in addition to you doing what you do. That's great for some of my favourite people. Love your artworks including those lyrics and tunes. Cheers bro 😁😎
Right away, my initial thoughts is that the designs with shading is the way to go. However, playing cards should typically be symmetrical so that orientation of the card doesn't matter. I'm personally not much of fan of one-way designs.
We're gonna build you 2 boxes, 1 filled yay goodies, the other full of sad things lol. Like in The Office when michael Scott is figuring out if Holly is engaged 🤭
Shading definitely. When it comes to the Kickstarter vs your website. Any reason you couldn’t do it on both? Or limited addition black playing cards on your website and then the white ones on Kickstarter or the other way around? Love the idea and definitely going to try and grab a pack when they are available! I’m excited!!!
I thought the exact same thing about having it on both websites. Then again the whole reason to sell them on Kickstarter is to get a lot of traction (from his fans) over on Kickstarter, and from there get more popular and features on Kickstarters website. That way he can get more profit, not necessarily money-wise, but by getting more exposure to his art.
Thank you for being so open and sharing your own insecurities when it comes to your art, it's so relatable and it feels good to know that even people I look up to and admire so much have these feelings but still make such amazing art! That gives me hope
The flat looks like everyday bicycle cards. So if you wanna add some of that playing cards norm to it, go flat. But I feel like the shading just looks so awesome and just adds a little something.
Black BG, shaded is so sweet. The chipping is probably saying that the sides or edge of the card may be scraped away leaving the card core showing or having the ink on the sides be scraped away. I love love love the Kings glasses, those look so lit
Really loved throw video because of how you asked for feedback from your viewers and also shared your vulnerability and self doubt making the art. Your human side is probably why I watch all your vids. This card idea is awesome! Loving the shaded versions, and the navy background to the inner box line looks tres tidy. Finally, reckon you give the Kickstarter route a go - try something new, and it might open new doors. You already know how it goes with your online store. Carpe diem!!
I like the flat but the shaded is really nice. The black background is definitely very cool. I can't wait to see how you design the backs and the tuck box too.
These look amazing, definitely picking up a deck. Love the black background, but I think having the white frame takes away from the effect a bit. Might be worthwhile to do a test print of full black if you can and see how big of an issue chipping would actually be. Another idea I think could be cool is having a different colour scheme for each suit (but cohesive background colour).
I absolutely love this idea. I'll definitely be buying 2 decks, one to use and one to display!! Also, the black with white frame!!! These will be epic!
As someone who JUST pledged on Kickstarter for your campaign, I am thankful you put it on Kickstarter. I am one of those who would have never seen you otherwise. I would have never seen your website. I am not a follower of yours nor (And don't hate me) have I ever heard of you. I am not into the art world at all so your art is new to me but, as a collector of cards BECAUSE of their art, I LOVE YOUR ART and so I did purchase some. I can't wait to add your art to my exhaustive collection of playing cards!
Love all your videos. Love all your work. Thanks for always giving 1000% in all your videos. Super hard to decide the white or black background, sometimes you gotta just sleep on it 😂 Can’t wait for you to release these. Excited for your journey and thanks for bringing us along, super stoked to see this grow - always will support! PS. Your ad animations will always win 🔥
I noticed that you already figured out a lot of things, so I will be straight to the point: 1) in your case I would choose Kickstarter. It will be terrific! 2) I use to say to the designers that creating a deck of playing cards is 50% about the box, 50% about the back, and.... 50% about everything else (I know it sums up to 150% but... it's true, if you make a mess with one of the aforementioned items, you blow half of the project). The back must have a 180-degree symmetry, that's key, but the courts can be done as you did: in an artsy deck it is allowed and doesn't raise an eyebrow. Don't forget the box.. it's 50% of the project :) I offer my support for free :)
I dig the black background. I really dig the designs. Dig the shading. My only issue is that the king of hearts is usually the crazy king and has a sword to the dome. Other than that minor gripe, those face cards look great.
Love this project, Ten. I can’t wait to support it! Maybe think about getting feedback from other RUclipsrs that are card experts like Chris Ramsey. There are others but Chris comes to mind because I think you two would really vibe well. Also, shading is a must! Flat looks nice but no one gives shade like you do. Also also, think about how people would play with the cards. Think about making the card readable no matter the direction. Last thing I want for people to know I have a face card while playing spades. Lol
This man is a hidden gem. Editing in these videos are the best on the platform. And his voice is do relaxing and his artwork style is so unique and awesome! I love his music too. The amount of work going into these videos is insane man.
man. i really needed to hear that part at 2:30. I've been watching you for years, and always thought of you as a super uninhibited and carefree guy. comforting to know we all go through this shit
100% Kickstarter!! I've purchased 6 decks in the past year from KS just because of the cool factor. I've also run several campaigns and 50%+ of backers come directly from Kickstarter organic searches. Also, you could do multiple decks with different backgrounds. People will buy every variation. People will also buy uncut sheets and 12 deck packs.
I really loved the insight you gave on your thought process! You read my mind - I think as a perfectionist I am always comparing myself and beating myself up if I can't keep up with artists I look up to. Thank you for taking some of that pressure away 🌻
Thank you for saying that you also struggle and don’t always crank things out easily. I’ve always thought that and it’s pretty nice to hear that you have issues in the process as we.
Agree, the art is fantastic but would look messy in your hand when playing with them, unless you spend the time flipping each card so it is the right way up.
@@celaya-s4e151 i think they mean having one character upsides down on the other side. This means the card would look the same if it was upside down! I agree with this idea! It would make using the cards for games and practical use easier!
Shading looks amazing, I really like the black background, I think the "chipping" problem will happen with any colour that goes right to the edge, not necessarily just the black. Black or White looks better than the Black White Split (In my opinion). Great stuff. I'll be getting a pack/brick for sure.
I’m so happy you acknowledge the ugly anxiety phase of art! I think both the shading and flat look good. Personal I would prefer the shaded one though.
Please have the Jokers be the same art, magicians love when there are two cards that are the same for tricks. Also, you could add a gimmick card for fun.
these designs are amazing, I love the colour palette you used! And I definitely love the shading, tho the more simple style would work well too for readability in the cards.(also in the ace card, the heart in the top is slightly too far to the left as compared to the other cards and its driving me crazy)
I know you’ve already read this from another comment but cards typically have a white boarder all the way around the front and the back making it harder to tell which card it is from the side, making it easier to do magic tricks, and making it look cleaner (in my opinion) A way you could do this is by making the black background a little smaller and then cropping the character to where the edge of the black background is right now to create that white boarder while still giving the card that depth. You could also just crop the character to where the black is (without making the black smaller) and create some boarder to separate the white from the art. Also others have been talking about the symmetry of the face cards. Personally I don’t care about the face cards being symmetrical. However, the back of the card should 100% be symmetrical so you can’t flip a card upside down and mark where it is if that makes sense. Hope this helps at least a little. Thanks for all the hard work that goes into your video. Cant wait to get my hands on some of these!!
Thank you @tenhundred for being so humble. Knowing that you also struggle through the process, inspires me even more. I am now back in the US, can't wait to get one of your prints... sad to know you are very booked and wont be able to send you my snowboard to paint! Will continue to support you, chelsea, doggy and baby lol
I like the white background 🤍 I think it looks really clean and easy on the eyes and people who accustomed to playing with regular white cards would prefer it Great Job ❤️🔥 can’t wait to see more! Would love to get these to play with my Granny.
I always thought the "Suicide Kings" were a concept that could be played with. it would be interesting to see a different take on them. Just my humble opinion. I could see them drinking a fountain pop/soda concoction ... a"suicide".
The cards are officially launched on Kickstarter! www.kickstarter.com/projects/tenhundred/vivid-kingdoms-playing-cards/rewards Watch Part 2 here: ruclips.net/video/eX5GXxYjPBY/видео.html
don't do a border where its white and black. What can happen during production as it is not 100% always centered due to print and cut tolerances so when there is a border it can look off centered. If you want a white border make it more than .125" as it wont look as off centered. FYI I am a graphics manager at a print shop :) Other than that they look cool
Either way you decide to sell them, PLEASE make enough for everyone. I hate not being able to buy something because I missed the release by a couple minutes.
This video makes me want to make my own cards, and the flat colors look so sick but I did a little gasp when I saw the shading. It’s so dope. Thank you for facing the intimidating project and inspiring the rest of us.
now first of all, I'm STOKED. This project is so cool!!!! Playing cards is kind of a family tradition and the deck that I'm using is probably over ten years old and completely faded...I'll definitely get a deck of yours. tbh I'm liking the white background a bit more. Maybe cause it's what I'm used to, but it just gives a friendlier vibe and is easier on the eyes while playing I think
Bahahaha. I just came back to rewatch this (research for the Reddit contest 😁) and hearing this quote from TenHun has me dying 🤣🤣… 12:31-“Option TWO is Kickstarter… now if I do Kickstarter they will take a cut of the sales… so it could potentially mean a little less profit.” He goes on to say maybe if he does Kickstarter, his fans MIGHT back the project enough to get some traction. Ten Hun!!! It is so effing sweet how humble you are in this video and it has me crying and laughing. I am from Seattle and watching your journey kept me motivated through the pandemic. I am so happy for your success. You have worked your ass off for years making incredible, innovative artwork and you deserve this big win ♥️♥️
The shading all the way! These are seriously sick! The navy blue background is the winner here, I don't think that the black fits into the colour scheme.
Love this idea! As an avid card collector I am so pumped to add a Ten Hun deck to my collection! As for Kickstarter, I know I have added some decks to my collection from there that I otherwise wouldn’t have seen.
When they're done, you need to send a deck to Chris Ramsey. He is a fellow youtuber, who is a magician and card collector. This could Definitely introduce you to a new audience and get him a sick deck of cards!
Great idea!
And probably Peter McKinnon too, since he collects cards as well.
I recommend getting a cardistry finish on the cards (smooth af) and sending them to some magicians and cardists on youtube.
I was gonna say to try and get in touch with him about getting them manufactured as well his 1st company is really high quality
On god he did it aaaaahhhh
Chris Ramsay is in part 2 of this Custom Playing Cards series.
Shading all the way. I usually prefer flat, but the shading rocks. Like the black bg too. Honestly the black is kind of out of nowhere
As someone who has had cards produced, I'd like to advice against the black frame within the white frame. The printing sheet might become slightly misaligned compared to the diecut, which will make the white border thin on one side and thick on the other. Go full white my dude!

USPCC is notorious for crooked borders and misaligned printing.
@@TripleBarrel06 As a fellow former graphic designer Im with you, things shift and that black can look WAY off center.

Correct. If players are flipping cards in their hand then it lets others know they have a face card.
This!
I really appreciated the "don't get tricked by my editing" section. I needed that.
Same 🌱
Yes!!
Do the navy blue background with a gradient around the edges, it would look sick, and if there's any issue with chipping, it won't look as bad because it will be faded out towards white

I love the black blacking. Really makes the art pop and I like the unique look it gives the cards.
Ask Chris Ramsay!
These cards look epic, loving the shading and the black background with the white border. Can you use your website and kickstarter?
Agree! Adding Chris Ramsay to the equation to ask about the ‘rules’ of card faces can actually be an epic episode. I can’t wait to see ♥️♥️♥️

All I'm saying is your "Watchers" would make a really good ace of diamonds
I love the shading. I think, though, that it would “pop” more if the light source came from the same angle as your diagonal stripe in the background!
Interesting idea, but I think it would make the composition a bit un balanced. Having all the brighter and catchier colours on one side can work out not very well sometimes.
I like the dark blue background best. It works well with the design but still makes it pop.
I WANT THESE CARDS! I think the shading adds so much depth to the drawing. I like the black background as well, but white also looks good too.
Yep, as much as I love the art and hate to say it, playing cards designs should be symmetrical. Can you use the art you made, flip/reverse it, and put that on there?

Totally digging the black frame! It makes the art pop off the card and it’s not your typical color I love these 💕 will totally be purchasing them!
Thank you for saying that you also struggle and don’t always crank things out easily. I’ve always thought that and it’s pretty nice to hear that you have issues in the process as we.
I feel like the character cards should be mirrored.
yeah I agree with ya :D
What do you mean by that?
Agree, the art is fantastic but would look messy in your hand when playing with them, unless you spend the time flipping each card so it is the right way up.
@@celaya-s4e151 i think they mean having one character upsides down on the other side. This means the card would look the same if it was upside down! I agree with this idea! It would make using the cards for games and practical use easier!
This!
Shading looks amazing, I really like the black background, I think the "chipping" problem will happen with any colour that goes right to the edge, not necessarily just the black.
Black or White looks better than the Black White Split (In my opinion).
Great stuff. I'll be getting a pack/brick for sure.
Playing cards and tarot cards are huge on Kickstarter so I'd definitely recommend that route! :)
BLUE background and shading 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I’m so happy you acknowledge the ugly anxiety phase of art! I think both the shading and flat look good. Personal I would prefer the shaded one though.
Please have the Jokers be the same art, magicians love when there are two cards that are the same for tricks. Also, you could add a gimmick card for fun.
these designs are amazing, I love the colour palette you used! And I definitely love the shading, tho the more simple style would work well too for readability in the cards.(also in the ace card, the heart in the top is slightly too far to the left as compared to the other cards and its driving me crazy)
I know you’ve already read this from another comment but cards typically have a white boarder all the way around the front and the back making it harder to tell which card it is from the side, making it easier to do magic tricks, and making it look cleaner (in my opinion)
A way you could do this is by making the black background a little smaller and then cropping the character to where the edge of the black background is right now to create that white boarder while still giving the card that depth.
Cant wait to get my hands on some of these!!
yeah, any bleed will show from the side, however minute
Thank you @tenhundred for being so humble. Knowing that you also struggle through the process, inspires me even more. I am now back in the US, can't wait to get one of your prints... sad to know you are very booked and wont be able to send you my snowboard to paint! Will continue to support you, chelsea, doggy and baby lol
I like the white background 🤍 I think it looks really clean and easy on the eyes and people who accustomed to playing with regular white cards would prefer it
Great Job ❤️🔥 can’t wait to see more! Would love to get these to play with my Granny.
Honestly I love the flat look way more then the depth.
I always thought the "Suicide Kings" were a concept that could be played with. it would be interesting to see a different take on them. Just my humble opinion. I could see them drinking a fountain pop/soda concoction ... a"suicide".
The cards are officially launched on Kickstarter! www.kickstarter.com/projects/tenhundred/vivid-kingdoms-playing-cards/rewards

don't do a border where its white and black. What can happen during production as it is not 100% always centered due to print and cut tolerances so when there is a border it can look off centered. If you want a white border make it more than .125" as it wont look as off centered. FYI I am a graphics manager at a print shop :)
Other than that they look cool
Yes, black with white frame! PLus, LOVE the heart!
Omg I'm so so so happy i'm not the only one having so much self doubt about my art in process... thank you so much for telling us this...
Either way you decide to sell them, PLEASE make enough for everyone. I hate not being able to buy something because I missed the release by a couple minutes.
Shading with black background, should definitely include an old school “hard hat” diver! Also, Tarot cards next???
Shading yassss and why not navy blue background. Oh darn, as I am writing this you just thought of navy blue loll. I vote navy blue with shading!
1000% Love the shading. It doesn't look complete without it
Navy blue!!!! OMG That looked sooooo good.
Oh, and baby. Where’s the baby? We need to see mama and baby. I miss Chelsea being in videos.
U probably don’t wanna hear at this point but fun fact: the king of hearts is the only king without a mustache!
Yo hook up with Chris Ramsay and his 1st brand. He's a card enthusiast and magician and RUclipsr. Great brand crossover!
Maybe cause it's what I'm used to, but it just gives a friendlier vibe and is easier on the eyes while playing I think
ooouuuuu hard decision… i would go without shading, and black background… without chipping, hahahah
The frame within the frame looks awesome! To die for
Bahahaha. I just came back to rewatch this (research for the Reddit contest 😁) and hearing this quote from TenHun has me dying 🤣🤣…
12:31-“Option TWO is Kickstarter… now if I do Kickstarter they will take a cut of the sales… so it could potentially mean a little less profit.”
He goes on to say maybe if he does Kickstarter, his fans MIGHT back the project enough to get some traction.
Thank you for being open and honest about your art process.
Black. Shading. Kickstarter. Looks great.
I like the shading for sure!!! Love it! Plus the black with the white boarder really pops ❤️✨
Shading and black, they look bloody awesome!
shading all the way! So cool. can't wait to see the finish the deck!
Love this idea! As an avid card collector I am so pumped to add a Ten Hun deck to my collection! As for Kickstarter, I know I have added some decks to my collection from there that I otherwise wouldn’t have seen.
