    PATIENCE + PERSISTENCE:
Unlike Joe, Romana only gave the Flying Squirrel to a small handful of teachers because it is so dangerous. I was very honored when Romana told me I was ready to tackle this move five years after she certified me.
Romana first taught me the introductory version of the Flying Squirrel exercise on the Cadillac with the hands on the mat for the wave-like body motion. I had myself convinced that I would never be strong enough to do the full version with the hands on the Push Through Bar for the wave-like movement. I was also very afraid that I would hurt myself due to my very flexible spine and lack of gymnastics background. It took me 7 more years to strengthen my powerhouse enough to safely tackle the Flying Squirrel with the Push Through Bar on one spring, but I'm so glad I didn't give up.
While it is easier for the arms to move the Bar when it is set to one spring, the lighter setting provides much less support while suspended in the air, and that requires an extremely strong powerhouse!

I used to do gymnastics and this looks very similar to the contraptions I made in my mother's basement.
