Hey guys have thought about getting a Special Air Force Reconnaissance member on the show from Ones Ready podcast maybe do a collaboration I think it would be different but informative!!!
The reason it was such a mine dense area is likely because it was a dry creek. Those mines were left overs from the Soviet invasion in the 1980s. In the decades following, the rains would wash them down into valleys and creeks where they would be concentrated in an area and just get buried in the mud.
One thing I'd just like to point out is these soldiers aren't basic infantry guys, they're part of the British Parachute Regiment as signified by the wings on their shoulders. The Parachute Regiment isn't like the 82nd or 101st, they're more on par with the 75th RR or other SOF units and they're a big feeder for the SAS.
The GPMG mounted on the Landrover can only be loaded from the left side. The empty cases fall out the bottom and the link goes out the right side. Also the scene where he was digging with the knife was the old way of searching for IED's and mines before the Valen mine detectors and op barma came into TTP's. Yes I am a 12 year British military vet, but remember this movie took place way back in the early days of Afghanistan and the British deployed with the most basic equipment.
This was during Herrick 4 in 2006. I was on the tour and heard about it almost in real time. There were only about 3000 British troops in the whole country, and only a third of us were out on the ground. We were spread around like a mad womans shite, trying to hold ground in little platoon and company strength patrol bases, with bugger all kit and learning on the fly. Looking back it was a joke.
@@FNGACADEMY I watch it and all the time you two was in front of my eyes. Can't wait to see your comments. I watch all season just to see how much stupidity I can't take and how far stupidity can go.
It's hilarious when Buck says "this was excellent, i loved it" then proceeds to rip it apart😂😂 Buck's accent was awesome even if it was more Scottish than British👍👍
I think they must have some shots in revervse. The General Perpose Machine Gun (GPMG) which you saw mounted on the land rovers passenger side is belt felt left to right. Brass comes out the ejection port, right side, and link is ejected from the underside port. Fantastic weapon that would easily rival the m249 and its been in service since the 60S
I was thinking the same thing. My guess is that they didn't have right hand drive vehicles to their disposal so they reversed some of the footage to make the vehicles look British.
As a Brit, I'm laughing out loud literally at your British accents. That front mounted gun is called a "Gimpy" General Purpose Machine Gun 7.62mm not .50 cal. It does seem odd if they're driving Land Rovers, they'd usually be right hand drive.
Love the GPMG, it’s weird they keep calling it a 50, we used it for a bit as an individual weapon in the gun section. Well depends where you were posted to it was either apart of the normal section or was in weapons platoon. Was heavy but it was a nice addition, never got to use one outside of training though.
Yes, finally. I asked you guys a couple of times to react to this movie in the comments. Maybe it's because I'm from the Netherlands but the movie was released under the name Kajaki over here so I never knew it was called Kilo Two Bravo.
It was Kajaki in the UK too, its only the US that they renamed it for ...I guess because it sounded like a foreign language movie (Which it is to Buck apparently) .
18:28 so i was a Marine combat engineer. they taught us how to do that stuff, except we wouldnt use knifes or anything, we used our fingers. straight finger fucking the dirt/sand to find the mines. but we were only told to do that as an absolute last option, if we had 0 equipement and we needed to clear the area. just part of the job. find it, mark it, keep moving forward
I always thought the conventional way to detect mines was just batshit nuts. A sudden slip, too much pressure and boom goes your hand. I recently saw a clip from Ukraine where they were testing out mine detection equipment mounted on drones. Incredible. I don't know if they're the first to do it but if it works, it's a great invention. Release a dozen of those, map out the minefield, then call in artillery.
I'm half Australian and half English. I have a relative with such a strong Yorkshire accent that I can't understand a word he says. When I was around 10 I asked my Mum (Mom to you Sepos) why he talks to me in that language when I only speak English. She laughed and said he IS speaking English!
6:25 from what i remember, atleast with the 240, i think its the same with the 50. you have to flip the (im gonna make this sound wierd) you have to flip the top of the bolt to the other side. if i remember right it looks like this...l\l....and you just flip it and make it look like this.....l/l..... or vise versa. then thats when you can swap the feed tray and that
We all know EOD dudes are just a little bit bananas. "Go ahead and shoot one at it. Lets see what it does..." OIF III Recon by scope over the truck hood.
If you guys are looking to do another Vietnam era movie, I highly recommend Rescue Dawn. Watched it with my dad who did three tours and he thought it was excellent. Lots of small details that they got right.
I might switch to a different branch just to be a ranger because I want to learn the things you guys learn and be a instructor someday. You guys have something no amount of training can get you. It’s like everybody has a plan until you get punched in the face type thing. I really think you guys are awesome and really am expired by you.
A lot of the mines laid in this area weren't even from enemy activity but actually from the 1980 Soviet invasion. The actual layout maps for this particular area were not even made known to the British intelligent services by both outside and Russian official channels till around 10yrs after this incident
For the .50 you have to change the bar and feed slide in the top plate, change the track and extractor arm on the bolt, and the feed and ejection trays. Easy transition, but uncommon for ground stuff. The Afghan MD-530's were set up with a L and R gun.
I wish the reactions of wwii vets to wwii movies had been captured like this for posterity. For all that everyone complains about the age we live in, it does have some cool aspects.
You should watch Land of Mine. It’s about post WW2 Netherlands, and how they used German teenagers who were force into the German Army to clear minefields by hand. They used German boys to clear beaches that had previously been mined by the Germans. It’s a really good film.
The film is also known as "Kajaki" as that's where it happened. Kajaki was an RnR location during the Soviet invasion, so it had lots of legacy minefields surrounding it. Remember that this was shot on a shoestring budget, and investors had a producer credit. So don't expect mass Marvel-level CGI. When we deployed in the early days, we were basically crashed out from the UK to Afghanistan, so we had next to no actual war-fighting equipment as we did later on. We also didn't have the numbers like the US to go out and patrol; we basically holed up in 'Alamos' and prevented TB flags from flying over the District Centres.
When I was first in the military I (from Long Island NY) was paired up with a black guy from the deep woods of Mississippi… I literally couldn’t understand anything he said to me for like two weeks.
The mine field wasn’t placed in the wadi. They were soviet mines placed in the 80s. Over time with weather ect they shifted and slipped down into the wadi.
I think they mounted the ammo cradle on the wrong side because that's a left hand feed tray on the L7 GPMG(FN MAG/ M240). I'm not sure if the left hand versions will accept a right hand feed tray, feed pawl, or top cover. Interesting side note, the M240 C feeds from the right.
9:01 you sound like you’re from Londyyyyaaaaannn!!!!!! That’s exactly how they sound to. We worked with them when we were deployed. Great fighters weird ass accent……….
