      Thanks for the kind words! I didn't show the nymph because it was a basic black and silver bead head zebra midge. s20. Hit up Steve Fletcher of Fletcher Flies. He is in the middle of a move so his shop is down at the moment but if you contact him and mention that you talked to me he will take your order. He will set you up with whatever you want and need. fletchersflies77@gmail.com
      I personally use the Clinch Knot. Which according to strength test by Orvis is actually stronger than the Improved Clinch Knot. Here is some good info on knots as well what and when to use them. Also check the "Orvis Animated Knot Series" link under the pic for details on how to tie certain knots.

    I fist with a zebra midge today after listening to the orvis podcast and watching this video, i tied it myself on a 16 scud hook....i had 9 fish on with it. i used it with a 7x after my main nymph or sunk under a caddis, it was super effective. At one point a fish threw my hook, and after i finished sighing and picked up my line, one hit me on the drag. Thank you.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  9 лет назад +1

      John Rock - That's awesome! Congrats! Yeah the duo set up is definitely one of my favorite. I most always use a double dropper and a lot of the time use the dry dropper as well. Unless there is a specific hatch that I am fishing.
      No point sighing over a fish that spit your fly. Happens all the time! It happened to me 3x this past weekend. Sometimes the hook just doesn't connect well and the fish shakes it off.
      What do you mean "hit me on the drag?"

    • @johnrock5384
      @johnrock5384 9 лет назад

      In that instance i mean i was just holding my rod and the line was in the water directly down stream of me just dragging in the water.
      The term drag just means when your line/ indicator causes the fly to move faster or slower and look unnatural. It literally looks like your line is dragging along the water.
      However i also find it very effective to purposely drag my emerger / wet fly/ nymph. i lift the rod 3 inches or so up out of the water then let it drop back down, almost like a mico-jig. This mimics the nymph rising as an emerger and triggers fish to hit often as the emerging state of the fly is when its most vulnerable.
      www.tenkarausa.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Screen-Shot-2014-02-05-at-7.52.30-PM.png
      that illustrates it pretty well. But it becomes doubly deadly with a multi fly rig as the larger fly gains extra attention with the drag.
      Hope that clears it up, fly fishing expressions vary so much everyone has their own dialect.
      Happy Fishing.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  9 лет назад

      John Rock - Tenkara methods are completely different. Like pulsing.
      Are you fishing stockies?
      I feel that fishing emergers will be just as effective without lifting. I am aware of the methods but think that most fish are more sensitive to drag than attracted to it. That's great its working for you in that stream. I just would rely on it on every stream.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  9 лет назад

      Thanks Tommy! Haha... although apparently not that clear, because this video was suppose to show my go to fly in the fall is the Zebra Midge. :-D
      Besides the Zebra Midge (or other midge patterns) Some other good flies are the Sow Bug (Cress Bug), Scud, BWO, Griffith Gnat, Soft Hackle and Trico (Early Fall). Important thing is the size... I would stick with s18 - s24

      Those are actually out of production Simms gloves. They just recently updated their gloves line. Much better in my opinion. I have since this video purchased the Simms Exstream Flex Glove
      www.simmsfishing.com/shop/socks-gloves/exstream-flex-glove.html
      Simms makes some of the best gloves. Another reason I support Simms is because of all the research they do on making the gloves as safe as possible for the fish. The glove is something that comes in direct contact with the fish and could possibly be harmful to the fish. Check out how some of their ideas and research that went with making their products.

    This is answering Dustan's question. You seem to have your 'reply to comments' disabled so I couldn't answer your question directly. Here is my opinion, which I also sent to you in a PM.
    You seem to have your reply to comment disabled so I wasn't able to answer your question directly through the comment.
    Of course for the best result in fishing particular water is to find out what's in that stream. You can do this by finding hatch charts online, asking the local fly shop or prospect the stream yourself by doing some rock turning or using a seine.
    To answer your question some must have nymphs would be the classics. For instance the Hares Ear, Pheasant Tail, Prince and Copper John. Then I would also definitely have Zebra Midge, Scuds and Sow Bug. For my personal wild cards I would have the Higa's SOS, Super Pupa and Soft Hackle.
    It's all about trying out a couple different flies and finding your own confidence fly or go to fly.
    I know you said nymphs but don't forget about the emerger! Very important fly! Most of the time when you see fish rising it's to the emerger and not the fly on the surface. For that you're gonna have to find out the bug in your stream to best tie the right emerger. Although you definitely can't go wrong with the Rabbits Foot Emerger.

    Hey bud, just wondering if you fish any of the small western Pa streams with any luck with the zebra midge. Just got into fly fishing and tying and tied a few at size 14 - 18 am I still a little on the large end of the zebra midge?

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  9 лет назад

      I haven't tried any Zebra Midges in W.PA yet. Only because when I was fishing there it was still summer and there were plenty of hatches and other things I could throw at the time. Although the Zebra Midge will basically work anywhere. The Midge is known for being in all types of water at any time of year. I most throw the Midge pattern in late Fall and Winter but it can be thrown anytime. Midges tend to be fairly small. I would fish s18 - s22. The magic number for me recently has been s20.

  • @gabrielliss7877
    @gabrielliss7877 9 лет назад +1

    are midges effective all year? I haven't really fished them that much. also do you have trouble getting the kinks out of the leader when fishing indicators or does it not bother you?

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  9 лет назад

      +Gabriel Liss - They are for me. Although I don't use them as much from spring - summer. Actually I am editing a new video right now that features me using the zebra midge. Personally I like using them from late summer - early spring. Practically the only thing I use in the winter being that in most places thats the only thing around at that time. During the spring - summer months there are plenty of hatches going on to match. Although during the late summer - early spring when the hatches are far and few between I go to the Midge. That's the only thing that does hatch year round.
      I tend to use the stick on indicators as much as I can to prevent kinks. Also think they are a bit more sensitive to takes. The only thing bad about them is that your can't fish too much weight with them. That's when I will slap on a thingamabobber. When I do take it off I always stretch out the leader and work the kink out as best as possible. If you stretch it enough and heat the line up a bit with friction from pulling on the line with your hands you can work the kink out fairly well. (be careful not to cut yourself!)

      @Wish4Fish  7 лет назад +2

      Sorry for this super late response! Not sure how I didn't see this post.
      You really can't go wrong with the classic patterns. They are classic for a reason. Like the Elk Hair Caddis, Adams, Pheasant Tail, Hares Ear. I bet I can fish an entire season with only those 4 flies and do really well!

    • @yoursweatersux
      @yoursweatersux 7 лет назад

      It's weird that I've never had success with an Adams (I fish in northwest NJ, so not too far from PA and the places you fish at all). It seems like if fish in my area are willing to take a fly on the surface, they'd rather go for an Elk Hair Caddis. Will you only fish an Adams during a hatch, or some other specific circumstances, or does it pretty much work at any time for you? I can't quite seem to figure it out if I'm using it at the wrong time or what

    • @andrewschell5071

    Do u use split shot on your rigs to get those small flues down

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  8 лет назад +1

      +ThelifeofDers Brown - In this case I did not use shot. I try not to unless I have to. When I do use shot I will also use a drop shot set up.
      This video I was using a duo nymph rig with my weight above the top fly 12in - 18in. In some of the shallow spots I would not use any weight at all. Just using a weighted fly above the midge. When I did use weight I was using Orvis Heavy Metal Extra Sink Putty. I think it's much better than the Loon putty. I would tie 12in tippet and then add the fly to the end of that. I would use the tippet knot as a stopper. Best thing to do is smash the putty around the knot in a oval shape. That way it won't catch of stuff that easy and the knot will prevent the weight from sliding.

  • @ontheflyoutdoors735

    I just bought my first fly rod a 7'6" 4 wt for small creeks around me, and just had a couple questions. Do you use a fluoro leader for nymphs or just tippet, and is it a standard tapered leader or is there something special and if I'm using mostly 4 and 5 x tippet should I be using a 3x leader ? Your videos are great, sorry about all the questions.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  7 лет назад +1

      Welcome to the wonderful world of fly fishing! Feel free to ask any questions that you want.
      I would stick with a regular nylon leader. Fluorocarbon leaders are too pricey and not necessary. Just add the Fluoro tippet for nymph rigs.
      As for leader choice. That is preference. Personally I use tapered leaders. I ALWAYS use Rio Powerflex Plus. You can also use the Orvis Superstrong Plus. Both were upgrade to their original leaders. Basically both 20% stronger with the same diameter.
      Since you're first starting out as well as on smaller streams I would stick with a 7.5ft leader. I would also skip the tippet for now and just tie straight onto the leader. So for example I would get the 7.5ft 6x leader and tie the fly directly to that. I fished like that for a entire season and caught plenty of fish. Then tie your tippet to the hook bend and add a dropper fly.
      If you're on small creeks you can easily get away with using 6x leader with 6x tippet.

    my fly line ravels up before the fly hits the water and I am left with a lot of slack!. what am I doing wrong? is it in my cast? HELP!!! PLEASE!.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  8 лет назад

      +LEONIDAS GUYEGGOS - Sound to me that you have some cheaper fly line. Did that line come with you outfit? Old?
      I think people don't put enough emphasis on the importance of fly line. I think it's one of the most important things. There are a lot of things a better fly line can do for you. Cast longer, smoother, mend easier, manage line better, pick up off the water easier and much more. Not only that but certain lines are very specific for ones needs. For instance I use the Rio In-Touch Streamer Tip Line with 6ips for just streamers. For dries and nymphing I use the Rio Gold.
      I started off with a Clearwater outfit and fished the free line that the outfit came with a an entire season. A blessing in disguise for me was that I cracked the line and the head and the tip was starting to sink.
      When I bought a new fly line I switched over to the Rio Gold. Which is a $80 fly line. Made a world of difference! You can really feel the jump from cheaper fly line to a pricer one in your cast.
      Out of curiosity, where is the fly line raveling up? How is it "raveling?" Where is this slack? When you say ravel you mean the line is curling up and you're left with a bunch of rings from line memory?
      Something that might be able to help you if you don't want to spend the cash on some new line is stretching the line. You should do this every time if you're line sits for a long period of time. You can just pull the line with both hands and work out the kinks.

      I have a bunch of Spring Creek video on here so you might wanna check them all out. I have several tips on those videos. It's hard to give specifics... The best tip I can give you is to take some time and observe whats going on in and off the water before you jump in. See if there are any hatches going on or what nymphs are in the water at that time.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  9 лет назад +2

      Luke Pinard - Thanks Luke.
      I was using the Lightning Strike stick on indicators. I personally think they stick better than the Orvis Stick-On Ovals. Although I do use both depending on which one I get my hands on first.
      Tying a dropper is simple. You can drop a 2nd fly from a Dry or Nymph. All I do is use a standard clinch knot to the the curved part of the hook of the top fly. You can use anywhere from 1ft to several foot of tippet depending on your situation and then just tie a fly on the end with another clinch knot.

  • @jderifaj
    @jderifaj 8 лет назад +1

    Ever drop that phone? :)
    Ken, so you use a pinch on strike indicator, with a BH nymph, then the zebra midge? is the zebra midge BH as well?

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  8 лет назад

      +Jason Derifaj - Actually I had the Lifeproof phone case on at the time so I was good to go even if I did. Currently I have a iPhone 6s with no case but it can withstand being under water for over 30min so I just toss the dice! Although to answer you question.... I have never dropped my phone (knock on wood)
      That is correct. I use the oval stick-on tab indicators with most likely a Pheasant Tail Nymph on top and a Zebra Midge on the bottom. I hardly ever use non-beadhead flies. If I do it will be a English Pheasant Tail or a Soft Hackle. When I switched to heavier weight I did use a Thingamabobber because the tab are not heavy weight friendly.

      Haha... don't take my word for it! Even Apple didn't want to release that feature publicly. Although they did take a lot of water proofing measures on the 6s. You can see videos of it on RUclips.

    What strike indicators do you use? I've been trying to find some good indicators, but I cant seem to find some. And any tips on how deep you set your indicator would be nice too. Thanks and nice video as always!

      @Wish4Fish  7 лет назад

      I'm sorry for the late response! Not sure how I didn't see this post. Personally I like using the oval stick on tab indicators by "Lighting Strike." I think they are a bit more stickier than the other stick on tab indicators on the market. When it comes to heavy weight I go with the Airlock Indicators.

      NICE! Thanks for watching! I am glad you enjoyed them... please do subscribe because I am uploading new footage all the time.
      You can use iMovie on your iPad. Great editing program. Although it would be difficult to get the raw footage onto your iPad.

    do you have any tips for me where to fish when the h2o is extremly low

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  9 лет назад

      Hmmm.. That all depends on the situation. Trout stream? Lake? River? Also the reason? Late summer? No rain?

    • @danielelwick3806
      @danielelwick3806 9 лет назад

      lake and there was a drought there is a little bit of water but i will see in dad can take me to the dam across the lake there is much more water over there

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  9 лет назад

      I was going to suggest fishing below a damn controlled river. Although if it's because of a drought then there is really not much you can do. They most likely restrict the flows because of the low water levels.

    Back in your Honey Hole at 4:29 I see. I was totally unaware that Spring Creek had any rainbows. It must be an escapee from Benner Springs hatchery as it is very unlikely that it is wild.

      I'm still amazed at how many trout you caught in that little slot under that bridge. It seems like you caught close to a dozen. I'm figuring you must live pretty close to your job so a trip to either Spring Creek or the Beaverkill must be pretty close to the same distance? I guess the BK is a little farther. I went there three times in 2014 and don't think I saw more than three rises in all three trips. I just can't stay until dark as I wouldn't get home until after 11:00 p.m.
      My success and high numbers of big fish is directly related to how many times I have going to MT and how I spend most of my time on the WB, EB, and main stem of the Delaware. Back when I was spending the summer in MT for those four years I was literally camping on Armstrong Spring Creek. It was free back them and I had permission form the owner of the ranch to park my VW bus on the property right by the river. I was catching a dozen, or more, 15" - 18" wild trout every day and I fished it day after day for months on end.

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  9 лет назад

      Yeah... That's just the trout that I had on film. Must of caught a dozen more. The video would of been entirely too long so I cut half out.
      Spring and BK are both about 4hrs from my house. It's a long haul but well worth it.
      MT is an amazing place! I would love to have a 2nd home there one day. Spending four summers there on a stream sounds awesome! I got to camp just 8 days there and it changed my life! Dying to go back!

    Ken, another great video and helpful tips. On most of your trips such as Spring Creek and Beaverkill. Do you usually take day trips most of the time or over night. Also, do you mostly travel by yourself? Thanks!

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  8 лет назад

      +Outdoorscout - Yes and yes... I mostly only do day trips. Leave at 1 or 2am to get there at first light. Fish till sun down and drive home by myself.

    you dont tie ur own flies?

    • @Wish4Fish
      @Wish4Fish  9 лет назад

      No I don't. I have been thinking about getting into it but I know that's opening up another HUGE can of worms. It's hard enough finding time off work and going fishing and then coming home and editing video and keeping up with all the social media.
      My sponsor Fletcher's Flies supplies most of my flies. Except emergencies when I run out....

      Ken, very sorry to hear about your buddy's passing. When we have four legged friends for any length of time they become parts of our lives. I never owned a dog but I have had cats.

      WOW! Almost 20? Your cat has lived a good life.
      Yeah, Miles was getting that way as well. Could hardly see, hear or smell. Barely walk. It was rough.
      I don’t think I will ever get another dog. It was too hard for my liking. Besides I don’t think I would ever be so lucky to get a dog anywhere close to Miles.

      Since your business is really taking off having a dog might not be a good idea since you wouldn't be able to spend much time with him/her. I just finished watching the Icelandic char video and the dry fly brown trout in Iceland. Both stellar videos. I want to look into your hosted Iceland trip.

      Just looked at your web site - does the listed fee for the Iceland trip include air fare? I can't do 2019 because I'm already booked for two weeks in MT.
