I watched a regular interview after watching a bunch of Sam's interviews, and it was immediate the disconnect of most interviewers just ready to ask a list of questions while having no connection with the person they are interviewing. Sam has such empathy, such connection, that he can have real, meaningful and deep conversations that we are lucky enough to be able to view and learn from.
"I desired longevity more than I desired fame" - love this quote and his approach, which to me seems like he is a longterm thinker. I wish you to catch good waves, Neil Patrick!
I think there are two more parts to the analogy: skill and luck. As in surfing, you need to develop your craft to be able to take advantage of the opportunities that come along. Also, you often need to be in the right place at the right time.
It's funny that so many actors either have much deeper or much higher voices in real life than the characters they portray. It's a mix is audio mixing and of course just playing the character
I think it's something about the way they mic them. There are other interview subjects who have an unnatural amount of bass. I think it sounds great, though.
I like how well-spoken he is. "I think the immediacy of fame, although it is an opiate, is certainly double-edged." There are not many who can formulate sentences like that on the spot, just having a conversation.
@Harry Baals Nah, I'm good, thanks. :-b Really, intelligence doesn't come into it that much. My point was more about reflection, the ability to take a step back from one's own situation and put it into simple, but effective words - that elusive thing that enables some people to do more than just formulating a sentence of more than seven words without an unhappy accident along the way. I work with extremely intelligent people every day, but many of them still struggle to bring their point across a lot of the time, if only because there's so much on their minds and nothing is really simple and clear-cut to them.
Yes, and his points have depth but are also succint. To me, Harris has always seemed like a master rhetorician. edit: I see you, too, appreciate Lindsey Ellis. Sending you a high five of solidarity from afar! ;D
I just realised I may have never heard NPH's "talking" voice? Like not the voice of his bubbly, entertaining persona on talk shows, but when he calmly talks about serious stuff. It's so deep! I think I wanna listen to it more :)
"The goal was to be patient enough to value that metaphor" is a beautiful way of putting it - it's not your approach that has to change (you can't beat the waves), but your character. You have to understand what the reality is, not the fantasy, and reconcile yourself to a different sort of beauty. Which applies to life in general.
TV movies tend to get imdb ratings of about 4.8 to 5.7 a lot; e.g., Pregnancy Pact starring Thora Birch has a 5.0 and Brave New World starring Peter Gallagher has a 5.3. The TV movies Neil was talking about have an average rating of 6.5: The Man In The Attic 5.8 Legacy of Sin 6.0 The Christmas Blessing 6.4 Not Our Son 6.5 A Family Torn Apart 6.6 My Antonia 6.6 Snowbound 6.7 The Wedding Dress 6.8 The Christmas Wish 7.0
I always love watching NPH...my favorite though is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog which isn't even a well-known show. Not everyone has the range to play a great, complex anti-hero. Plus he gets to showcase his singing ability too:) Also love the surfing analogy...when you're young and you miss a wave you think it's the end of the world. True, the exact same wave will never come again, but life always has opportunities if you're willing to get back up and keep trying.
Thank you for imparting such a pearl! I wish that everyone person struggling and questioning the value of life could hear This analogy. It is SO true 🙏🏻
I started watching because I saw an interview with The Edge from U2 and can't stop watching! - GREAT series. Really down to earth conversations. Thank You!
He's SO talented!!!! I hope to see NPH is in much more projects. I LOVE this series. I cannot wait to see the full interview. This interviewer is stellar...he is so talented in his own right that he delves into the interviews with so much knowledge and can relate in a wholee different way than other people who might do an interview series like this one...directing and what not really shows he is so much apart of the craft too. LOVE this! Starting watching the Matt Damon AND Robert Downey Jr. interviews thus far, many interviews to go...I'm VERY amped.
Just keep being yourself that is what all people really enjoy about you and your acting, I have caught myself watching crap I hate just because I found out you were on it.masked singer is a example, I hope you don't burn out, we all love you and support whatever you do.
This has to be true in believing for a new relationship to start. There has to be one more wave for me. There just has to be. This can’t be the end game. Great advice
What a brilliant metaphor for life in general. New respect for NPH, he has a great deal more intelligence & depth than I ever realised (& yes, I know, that wasn't HIS metaphor). 👍
This is really helpful actually.....holy crap. I'm hoping to get into the industry but I'm still working my skills and I'm not putting myself out there yet. I'm starting with practicing lines from My favorite shows and studying mannerisms while trying to put myself out there. It kinda sucks cause my parents are very much not letting me get out into the world which is nessacary for this kind of thing. But back to the metaphor I'm definitely going to use that ideology in my thinking now!😌 sorry for the long speech I'm done now
There are also sharks in the water. Sometimes a shark might eat your arm and send you to the ER. So you’ve gotta fly some shark spotter drones and then paddle back into the waves with your one good arm and maybe a little paddle strapped to your stump.
I swear Doogie Howser is never going to age. He looks like he's 30 I remember watching him as a little kid doctor back in like 1990. That's crazy how fast time flies but I swear he ain't never going to age. Between him and Kirk Cameron I don't think either one of them are ever going to age. LOL
He used to come in to the Hastings in ABQ and ask me about videos--he loved Fawlty Towers--anyone with that kind of taste as a little kid is going to turn out just fine.
Real people ... real talks 🙂 these people had lives before and they do now .... loving the connectivity and the sense of real. Have you guys done a talk with Tom Cruise yet? ..... he is real I don’t care what anyone says ... he .. is .. real.
He finished with the most metaphors I've ever heard in a single sentence: Fame is an opiate (drug), double-edged (a sword), and a shooting star, but I'd prefer a telescope and to wait for the next chapter (book). Well done Mr. Patrick Harris, that was impressive
I’d hate being an actor. The actual work isn’t glamorous like people think. It only is when they aren’t working and spending all their money. Just watch any behind the scenes
The interviewer is gold. He just let's them talk. Wish there were more like him.
I KNOW RIGHT!
BBC 1 movie critic and interviewer, Ari Plumb
Exactly. He asks them good questions about themselves and not about a role that they are promoting. He lets them talk, and he gets this great content.
Jimmy Fallon needs to learn how to listen to guests and be authentic like Sam
"I desired longevity more than I desired fame" - love this quote and his approach, which to me seems like he is a longterm thinker. I wish you to catch good waves, Neil Patrick!
This is the most truest no BS advice i have ever heard related with acting.
And everything else.
Agreed with almost everything that he said... but what about the ones who never 'catch a wave'?
I think there are two more parts to the analogy: skill and luck. As in surfing, you need to develop your craft to be able to take advantage of the opportunities that come along. Also, you often need to be in the right place at the right time.
Somehow I thought BS in your comment stands for Barney Stinson. I'll let myself out.
Then stop bitching and go to another beach and be patient for your goddam wave!
I've never heard his voice so deep.
It's all that @#@$ sucking
Brian Jenkins out of pocket
It's funny that so many actors either have much deeper or much higher voices in real life than the characters they portray. It's a mix is audio mixing and of course just playing the character
@@stevethomas5467 Based on your own experiences?
I think it's something about the way they mic them. There are other interview subjects who have an unnatural amount of bass. I think it sounds great, though.
man busted out like 4 different metaphors at the end there
ACE105 right??? lol
He’s a wise human.
Metaphorically he’s right😀
Gemini Sun, Sag Moon... that;s what you get!
I like how well-spoken he is. "I think the immediacy of fame, although it is an opiate, is certainly double-edged." There are not many who can formulate sentences like that on the spot, just having a conversation.

this is relevant to anyones life
I just realised I may have never heard NPH's "talking" voice? Like not the voice of his bubbly, entertaining persona on talk shows, but when he calmly talks about serious stuff. It's so deep! I think I wanna listen to it more :)
Absolutely priceless how affecting a few words from ‘elders’ in our youth (for better and for worse) can be throughout sometimes our entire Lives

You have to understand what the reality is, not the fantasy, and reconcile yourself to a different sort of beauty. Which applies to life in general.
I love the simplicity of two guys talking without any interviewer interruption. What great advice too
yup, PERFECT metaphor for the business, especially those of us starting out...it's a numbers game where patience truly is the virtue:)
Acting sounds like dating lol
Such a smart and insightful guy Neil is...So talented

He’s a really grounded, nice guy. He really surprised people nearly 25 years ago with the brilliant Starship Troopers.
Oh i totally forgot he was in that movie, the first ones classic.
That's nothing compared to his self-parody in the three Harold and Kumar movies.
Christopher C Yes indeed. He’s amazing in those.
Amardeep Grewal It is indeed. One of my favourite ever science fiction movies.
And 'Harold and Kumar Goes to White Castle'.😂😂
The wave/surfing analogy is amazing.
I love that surfing analogy so much. I think it can be applied to many different walks of life, so I think I'll start using it in my classroom!
Neil Patrick Harris: "I'm from New Mexico"
Steven Bochco: "I've got the perfect metaphor for you: surfing"
I hope to see more from How I Met Your Mother at some point. I don't want talents like Josh Radnor & Neil Patrick Harris to fade away 😟
:(
Josh Radnor is honestly one of the best actors I've ever seen.
@@utub1473 Agreed. I just watched a show called "Hunters" on Amazon Prime, where Josh Radnor is in the main cast. Brilliant performance 🙏

How can one not love what he said. It rings true for many professions.
very sensible outlook. good for him!
Thank you for imparting such a pearl! I wish that everyone person struggling and questioning the value of life could hear This analogy. It is SO true 🙏🏻
How nice to discover he can be so thoughtful.
I’m such a fan of NPH. Great actor with tremendous range.
he speaks with so much sense and poetry in it. awee.
"Well, at least you have range!"lol
Surfing..what a great metaphor for the acting profession
I started watching because I saw an interview with The Edge from U2 and can't stop watching! - GREAT series. Really down to earth conversations. Thank You!
He is the definition of humbleee
All the actors who you interview seem so comfortable with you. Like they've known you for years!
Never heard an actor express so much patience. Not just great advice but great assimilation.
One of the most fantastic stories ever, you are awesome man...
very reasonable perspective, and articulate presentation. nicely done
That was fantastic. Thanks NPH.
such a deep and profound man, and a side of him i didnt know, respect!
Great interviews. Really like how he lets them talk and it all flows naturally
"this industry is like a surfing" this is the advice .. be patient
Notice how metaphors are always a great way to influence & make things click in people's brains.
Amazing Advice! Thank You So Much!❤️💯
Everyone likes neil Patrick harris. I did as a kid in the 80s. Loved Doogie Howser.
One of my fav interviews with a celebrity ever neil is great
Love Steven Bochco and his work.
Excellent advice.
Steven Bochco is a sheer genius
neil patrick harris is the man. i honestly think there is NO acting role he wouldnt be great in. favorite actor
I love this. Neil Patrick Harris well said. Wonderful story.
Love the surfing analogy!
that advice was legen... wait for it....... DARY!!!!!
LMAO 'well at least you have range' great interview!
Wish there were more of his interviews available
Really enjoy your set of interviews sir

i love him on Hot Ones
He looks like he could either play Quentin Tarantino or a really down to earth Batman villain
He voiced dick grayson/nightwing on batman: under the red hood, i think
Oh yeah. It's Quinton.
very well-spoken
I like the surfing metaphor.
This has to be true in believing for a new relationship to start. There has to be one more wave for me. There just has to be. This can’t be the end game. Great advice

This guy is so talented!
Thumbs up! So you probably will still be seeing Neil on Broadway when he is 82 yrs old play Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman.
I love NPH. And woukd watch anything he's in.
such a smart guy
I’m hoping to make it in 10 years. I’ll be 65. Y’know, instead of retiring. 😊
It’s actually a super accurate description of surfing
"Paddle out..."
I've heard this advice more than once.
Patrick: Have Patience in Life. Your wave will come. 😎
Why are his eyes so sad in this video? I hope he is fine. Love NPH!
he is not fresh here probably plus interviews on this channels are not flashy, celebs are relaxed and more themselves here
Hunbbel Meer perhaps because he and his partner have two small children - he may just be tired from his “real” life 🤔
Great analogy!

It’s legendary...🤩
So he used a surfing metaphor on a kid from New Mexico. Counterintuitive. ;-)
Great life advice not just for actors
Real people ... real talks 🙂 these people had lives before and they do now .... loving the connectivity and the sense of real.
Have you guys done a talk with Tom Cruise yet? ..... he is real I don’t care what anyone says ... he .. is .. real.
Today I found out Steven Bochco has died.
This video is a great tribute to his legacy not only as television creator but as a human being.
His voice is actually deep
everybody shoud get note of this ; works perfect for you
Very good

Damn this might have just changed everything for me.
he meant A Family Torn Apart (also known as Sudden Fury)
true and not just for acting thank uu NPH

I couldn't be an actor either. What a terrible job. Redoing lines 30 plus times ick!!! I couldn't do it but I'm really glad someone can.
What great advice.
