your not just teaching whittleing you also teach kind of a philosophy. It´s okay when its not perfect. Today I tried a Fox free Hand and the Tail was Waaaay to short. much much sharper. I usually get my pocket knives just as sharp as my whittling knives (sometimes I use them for whittling too) but some other factors that make them slice wood off easily are a thin blade and a much narrower cutting edge angle. The combination of all 3 on a properly hardened blade (typically harder steel than a tritonal pocket knife) lets it glide right through the wood.
Do you have any other social medias I could send you a picture of the bear like this one I made? I"ve been using your design except for the hands I make the bear holding a heart. I also woodburn them afterwards and they turn out really well.

I like your approach to teaching. I like that you have reference with your videos. Everyone else just starts hacking away at wood and just expect you to follow along.
I was trying it with pine but it’s extremely hard I see how easy your knife slides through this basswood So I just ordered some I almost sliced my finger if it wasn’t for the gloves and the mesh you recommended I’d be at the hospital right now ! Thank you for your walk through I ordered the beaver wood kit from Amazon Followed your leather honing tutorial but I do feel like this pine may have just dulled my knives I stopped at the for head it was too damn hard is basswood softer ? Certainly looks like it
Most basswood from beavercraft is a good softness. But definitely work on that knife a bit. When in doubt, take smaller, shalower cuts. I use a special basswood thats super soft (sometimes too soft) and a wicked sharp and thin knife so I make it look easy lol.
Where do you get 1x1x2? I’m having a hard time finding them. They’re all larger and I’m not sure I could cut them down and have them sized correctly (I’m new) Is it easy to cure down larger blocks? Amazon didn’t have 1x1x2 and they have everything, lol
Daaaaang… just got my first bad cut on my thumb… to the bone and half way through my nail… 👀 word to the wise…. Do not have any distractions while whittling
So I love this and I think your instruction is simple and easy to follow, but I wonder if I could ask you to do a variant of either a bear or some other animal on the end of a wooden dowel or a stick. I make wands by hand and whilst I can do spirals and grooves and the like, I want to get into doing more intricate carving for the pommels and I thought some form of animal carving might work. I'm going to see if I can adapt this to working with an 18mm dowel though my design would be the end 3 inches of a 12 inch long piece of wood and whilst I don't mind if I muck it up as I've got plenty of spare wood, I'd love to see how you'd adapt such designs. Certainly I know it's possible as some people carve amazing things for walking sticks and whilst I'm not making walking sticks I am still using a circular piece of wood and so would love to see a more experienced carver (I've only been at this for 2 months or so now) take on and show off such a challenge and break it down for beginners if possible. Either way I'm definitely going to keep watching your videos on carving as they are good starting points.
Idk if my knives aren’t sharp enough or what. I bought a kit off Amazon and my first initial cuts it goes through like butter but the deeper I go it’s hard as hell to cut and get a clean cut at the very least. I’m using basswood so it must be the knives. It seems almost dangerous to continue without getting them sharpened even though they seem fine at first. I’d prefer to try dremel carving but it’s an expensive tool to buy to simply try it
Many of the cheap kits on amazon are "sharp" but nowhere near my level of sharpness. Also, the blades are a little thicker which does make it harder to slice through the wood than a thinner knife like I use. Side note, lots of the basswood you buy online have been sitting in a warehouse for a long time and just continue to get more dry and harder over time. Its kinda like the perfect storm for a meh experience.
