  • On December 12th 2020 just before Christmas and what was about to become the second Corona variation hit to the UK, a close friend of mine by the name of James invited me to join him in Kenya, where he has been residing for the past two years for work. I thought it would be a good chance to learn more about Africa and finally get out of my house, so I accepted his invitation. During the trip, i plucked up the courage to tell my friends that I would be extending my trip and joining them on their hike up Mount Kenya. So with no experience, equipment and honestly no real idea of what I was getting myself into, I agreed to climb Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa.
This is my story as a non-experienced mountaineer, listening to his gut and seeing if could take on 2nd the high-test mountain in Africa. Mount Kenya - This is the journey of - Me Vs The Mountain
Let me know in the comments if you have climbed this mountain before or have plans to do it.

nice video! We climbed Mount Kenya in 2011 - we were not prepared, too. My friend just read a book about the mountain and prisoners in WWII who escaped to climb the mountain and at that time in 2011 we stayed in Nanyuki so we took the way they used in the book. Crazy but amazing. We were young back then. Now we thought about hiking again and use the Chogoria Route which you used. But before we need to train! Best regards from Germany!

Great video. I felt like I was there with you. What is your next mountain? I found your video after reading the book "No Picnic on Mount Kenya by Felice Benuzzi". It is a great book about Italian POWs in WWII that escaped from a POW camp and climbed Mt. Keyna and then went back to the camp to be POWs. They traveled the same route as you. You should check it out.

Hi, great video, a nice insight into what to expect. I am planning to climb mount Kenya in March and wanted some advice on what you think would help in training for it, also regarding the clothes you had, what type of jackets etc do you advise to wear/take with you as I noticed you mentioned quite a lot how cold you were feeling. Any other tips etc, if you were to do it again? Thanks a lot! Once again really informative video with some lovely visuals.

Thanks ADot! I would advise starting some interval training in your workouts. It will help during the high altitude on day 3! Otherwise, I would suggest keeping the vision of the top at the forefront of your mind :) You'll enjoy it!

the real summit is acutally a pretty hard technical climb.

Thats's because the team never climbed Mt. Kenya. They walked up to Lenana Point. It is over 200 meters lower than the actual summit and is not technical at all. Still a good experience it would appear.

Lenana would still be quite the accomplishment for someone who has hardly done anything in the outdoors.

Beautifully and sensitively made video on the finest Mountain in Africa. I have climbed the main summits of Batian and Nelion 4 times and Lenana 3 times in the 1980s. I did the Chogoria route to Lenana with a group of students in 1989. Of the 7 teachers and 16 students who set off at Urumandi, only 3 teachers and 5 students made it to the top so you did very well. Excellent effort to fight off the altitude sickness at Austrian and make it to the summit. Your advice on how to climb the mountain is superb and I would advise anyone to climb to Lennana over a similar timescale.
