This situation feels like the beginnings of MLB's equivalent to the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes. It's going to drag on potentially for decades. Whatever building they finally settle for in Vegas won't be good enough in 10 years, especially once the NBA expands to Vegas and the A's find themselves 4th in the market with dwindling crowds and a small TV market. Then rinse and repeat the whole "We need a better building"/relocation drama again.

The Big 4 major leagues seem to be overestimating the potential of the Vegas market. Vegas is far from your typical city and metropolitan area; it's primarily composed of transplants who work in various service-related industries. Additionally, it's a relatively small TV market that saw its peak growth about six years ago.
There is, however, one exception: the NHL. The NHL made a wise move by being the first to enter the market, establishing a team early on and fostering organic growth. The NHL's approach is smart as they don't hinder the development of expansion franchises, ensuring they become competitive as quickly as possible. The city has fully embraced the team as its own.
In contrast, the NFL appears to have miscalculated Vegas; it may just end up being a quick pit-stop for visiting fans. Once the initial excitement of the new stadium wears off, filling seats could prove to be a challenge. Also, locals have not embraced the Raiders as they view as a 'garbage dump' via Cali and not a local home-grown entity.
Now, both the NBA and MLB are expressing interest in entering the market, despite indicators suggesting a limited appetite for professional sports. Baseball might be the biggest loser in this scenario, as it's hard to imagine fans wanting to spend their time indoors watching 80 MLB games per year. And when it comes to TV viewership, apart from games featuring teams like the Dodgers, interest may be limited.

yeah las vegas as the 40th biggest media market in the country are going to get 4 major sports teams in what a 10-15 year span ... you really think all 4 teams are going to thrive in that city, a city that like you mentioned has a lot of transplants ... and that doesn't include all the entertainment options that many would choose over sitting in a sports venue for 2, 3, 4 hours ... i think at least one & maybe even two teams are going to be left behind in the long run
imo baseball is the least likely to thrive .. vegas is an "event" city and baseball is the least "event" sporting experience out of all the 4 major leagues of the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB ... it has the least amount of on surface action during the game itself and probably more importantly twice as many home games with 81 compared to 41 for NBA/NHL and 8 or 9 for the NFL
and unlike the NBA and especially the NFL imo you're not going to consistent draw opposing teams' fans to a road games in vegas ... i mean are royals, twins, tigers, rays, and many other teams fans on the central or east coast of the USA going to travel to vegas for a monday, tuesday, wednesday 3 game road series in vegas in april, may, june ... good luck with that
imagine the money needed for the 2 way plane tickets, 3 or 4 nights at a vegas hotel/motel, and then tickets for 2, 3, or 4 games for the game itself which will be expensive ... that's thousands of dollars every year for maybe 1 or 2 road trips to vegas ... it's easier for the NBA and NFL fans because it's one or two trips at the most on the road and you can get in and out that same day where you don't need to pay for at least a couple of nights of hotels & etc
this relocation process and the future of the a's in vegas has disaster written all over it

You people seem to think Las Vegas operates by the same rules that every other city does. Having lived here 50 years, I can tell you that it does not. Every casino in town will run junkets from all the the major league cities. They will buy 10,000 or more season tickets. Las Vegas gets nearly 40M visitors a year . . . a lot those are families driving over from Southern California in the Summer. I guarantee that plenty of them will enjoy a game in a climate controlled ballpark. Traditional "TV" is yesterday's news. MLB has already announced that they're moving to their own streaming package. TV revenue will be a very different model in five to ten years. And to think that the Raiders aren't successful is lunacy . . . they are now the third most valuable football team in America ($6.2B), behind Dallas & New England, and seventh most valuable North American sports franchise overall. Keep in mind, Nevada has no state income tax which will lure plenty of veteran free agents to the Athletics . . . when the team becomes more successful, their games will be much more attractive to fans.

Good point on the TV deal. Who will have TV rights when they move to Las Vegas?

    • @scotttild
      @scotttild 4 месяца назад

The TV rights in Vegas will go to the A's and the A's only. Other teams ie the dodgers and angels can broadcast local games in Vegas now because there is no team. Once the A's move to Las Vegas they will get a local TV deal with local broadcasters which will be a lot more then what they are getting in Oakland. The Angels and Dodgers will blacked out in that area. MLB has a national TV deal for national broadcast games, then the teams have local deals. The local deals are not shared equally and that's the main issue with baseball. Teams like the Dodgers, Yankees and Cubs get monster local tv deals and only a fraction of that is shared with the visiting teams. So a team like the A's that say is a road team in NY gets a part of that local deal but only when they are playing the Yankees. I hope that makes sense.

Add in the bulk of their TV contract, and the A's should have revenue north of 130 million, without even attempting to put a fan in the ballpark. Why are they allowed to spend so little? Can open it up to Vegas residents, have a contest, whatever....Give the franchise a Vegas name. Then - Oakland can get an A's - reboot under a different owner (Lacob?)
It makes the most sense for win-win-win - for Fisher, for Oakland, for MLB, for Vegas.

This has definitely been brought up and recommended by quite a few of us in the Bay Area (not exactly playing rent free but perhaps keeping their measly $1M annual rent). @@stu4313 Yeah, to be fair, I get why weasel Kaval and Mr. Burns, I mean Fisher would want to come in fresh into town (LV) with the A's brand - for 1 - it's cheaper than needing to secure copyright fees and all the things associated with a whole new team design & logo.
Not saying I like it, but I can understand (still don't agree it's the best thing to do).
It seems to be the only way all sides can achieve something resembling a win.
But you're right Oakland wouldn't let him use the facility rent free (although if he agreed to leave team name & heritage here, he won't, but if he did, that would be a fair trade)

IMO, an MLB team is Las Vegas is a stupid idea. 1. nobody wants to watch baseball in a dome which it would have to be 2. Las Vegas is not large enough to support 80 baseball games a year in a large stadium. Also, it's surprising that they are not considering the extreme heat waves that Las Vegas experiences in the summer. It's similar to the hot summers in Phoenix, so it doesn't make sense to not build a retractable roof just like the Diamondbacks have done. They have it for a reason it gets over 100 degrees in the summer, which is no different in Vegas. It's absolutely ridiculous to expect fans to sit in the open sun and watch a game.
