A significantly large amount of money is spent by us buying and consuming excessive amount of alcohol on a weekly basis instead of using that money to collectively fund these initiatives. S/O to you Pen for reinforcing value and leadership in our minds for our children's sake.

You are so on point. My son is 5 heading to grade one next year, I haven't applied for any school as yet because I'm scared he will be bored and he had already said it about creche: "school is boring, we don't build anything". The guy already knows how a combustion engine works, knows about submarines, aerodynamics just to mention a few. To nurture his curiosity (for lack of a better word) I do stuff like servicing the car with him, changing light bulbs and just this week he showed his mother and sister how to start the generator during loadshedding - for home the house was powered up. I'm in the process of getting model cars for him to build and when he starts reading I want to get a real car and let him strip it and rebuild it again and see drive it. One thing I know with our education system heel be branded as being hyper active and suffering from ADHD.
Also been searching for alternative education but to no avail for his age as engineering schools are for teens. Radford in Northcliff send like the only school available to try get him in but the costs and logistics if he were to be admitted are closer to impossible mainly on where we leave, cost I may chance.
If he happens to lose interest in his curiosity later, I'll nurture the next curiosity he takes and so on.

I bet if you could compare profession by by profession, individuals with university degrees will always trump those without.

Households with parents who have university degrees outperform those without in every metric.

I am an architectural technologist but I know how to wire a plug, install a tap, lay sewer pipes, install a door, paint and more. Things I was not taught at university, I taught myself.
If they'd add that to the curriculum it'd be five or six years instead of three and cost even more. Something people like you and Pen don't factor into your fancy ideas.
The course I did mainly focused on design, costing, contract administration and site visits. It's structured similar to others in the built environment across learning institutions.

This Education system is old and outdated. It used to take months to move from one continent to another l, now we so it under 24hr. We can't be studying for a profession for 3 or 4 years it need to be less. If the years we study is reduced even the cost of educating ourselves would be less. Covid should us a lot bout online learning. It was more easy and convenient. The only cost was data. If the whole nation of going to school was removed and everything was online it would be way cheaper. Look at Tymebank compared to other banks, Tymebank is a digital bank and it's cheap.

Great advice Pen. Purpose in life and self respect will flow from this which is a firm foundation. A certain level of maths and English is key to progressing technical skills beyond a point. Dont believe that social credit is replacing jobs; it is utterly unaffordable never mind moronic. If the ANC left growth and administration to the private sector, unhindered by BEE, EE etc, the investment would flow in, and the joblessness will drop to single digits (as it used to be way back). The latter will provide the biggest black growth in jobs, skills and empowerment than the job killing, spirit crushing ANC.

International investors do not invest in countries where the majority of tertiary students enroll for the "easy peasy" degrees. The amount of useless bachelors in political science, religious dogma, sociology, psychology, etc leaves alot to be desired when competing against Asian countries where mathematics/science is mandatory for everyone until they leave school. We have more than enough world-class tech and science study programs, but seemingly mostly the previously advantaged's children seems to enroll for those "difficult" programs and then end-up with the current high paying in-demand jobs. Which explains why they remain advantaged. I was also a financial management student and whilst I sh*t hard, most of my peers had no problem with their Faculty of Arts degrees. Once we graduated, I never had a problem finding work in currently relevant sectors whilst my former student peers work as retail cashiers. On the day of course enrollment for first year students, I've witnessed how the majority of especially previously disadvantaged students ask the student enrollment officers which courses are the "easiest" because they don't want to struggle and that's why at EVERY tertiary institution the amount of students studying rubbish Faculty of Arts degrees vs technology are heavily skewed. The jobs will be created when the workforce has studied courses that's relevant for today's economic sectors. Someone commented that folks should study law. Wrong! That's also a very easy degree and that's why there's an oversupply of law bachelors in the market. Those law graduates end up competing for call centre jobs because there's just too many law graduates for the available article internships. Why don't Azania have a problem with too many actuaries? Too many chartered accountants? Too many physicists? Too many technology developers? Whenever a Faculty of Arts graduate complains to me about how hard it is to find a job, my response is always to ask why they studied worthless bullsh*t in the first place and not something where they know there's a demand for the particular skillset. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy, so let's be honest that the majority of Azania's students lack work ethic and actively avoid the difficult degree programs that matter!!!

I would encourage citizens to spend their efforts in voting for a new government. One that has proven to be capable. And participate in passing of new legislation by sending their comments ir boycotting said laws or policies.
Currently the same people you're speaking to and probably a majority of them are non-voters and part of the problem. They are registered i would imagine, but they expect someone else to do the hatd work for them.
Additionally no policy or law gets passed in the country without the citizens being invited to comment. Unfortunately only a few participate in this process and the majority cries when laws get passed and pretend as though they were outsmarted by the state.
Is government not by the people and for the people?

School isn't the only problem. Most people don't seem understand how value works hence they find themselves in the long unemployment line. The first trick is to study for fields which have a shortage of skills. Then second trick is to study the needs of different stakeholders in the economy and try to satisfy them.

There's huge demand for doctors everywhere. People are willing to stand in queues for hours just to have access to doctors. The only thing preventing those unemployed doctors, that you speak of, from working for themselves is government policy prohibiting them from opening their own practices. We were not talking about graduate unemployment in the 90s and early 2000s because the economy was growing at about 5%. Things began falling apart during the Zuma days.
