"The Bonnie Blue Flag" from "God's & Generals - Extended Director's Cut''

- In the late fall of 2001, the 2nd South Carolina String Band was honored and privileged to participate in the making of the Ted Turner/Warner Brothers film, “GODS and GENERALS”, the long-awaited sequel to the 1993 release, “Gettysburg”, about the famous battle. Joining us in this ‘adventure’ were two other well-known musicians, David Kincaid and John Whelan.
We would be portraying a camp band, typical of either army during the Civil War, especially during the winter months when marching and maneuvering over muddy roads was basically impossible. Our scene called for a show being offered for the entertainment of the troops, in this case featuring a popular singer/songwriter of the day, Harry McCarthy, and his soon-to-be wife, Lottie. They would be performing his recent and wildly popular song, “The Bonnie Blue Flag,” while we eight musicians would provide backup instrumentation.
Though the original script was barely a half-page long, the scene had evolved into a considerable production that took a full day and hundreds of actors and technicians to shoot. What follows is the full, extended Director’s Cut version of the scene, presented in its entirety. We are enormously proud to have been a part of it, and hope you enjoy it. We heartily encourage viewers of this video to buy, rent, or stream the entire amazing film.

I never realized all the times I have watched this incredible movie that it's the 2nd South Carolina String Band up there!! This is awesome!
Just returned home from a Civil War reenactors event in central Florida.
It was a good event, filled with love, appreciation of history and great commradery with my pards....
Company K 7th Florida Infantry.
Gods and generals really helped the band gain notoriety!
Excellent display of the many styles of CSA uniforms, I had been at the 135th Gettysburg ( 1998 ? ) BIG ! event and it was great !
CSA unit the 10th TN ( In WI )
Was that unbelievable, or what ? It was the only major reenactment where I went out 'in blue'. Having heard that we (the Rebs) had nearly the same numbers as Pickett did in '63, I wanted to see the attack from the Yankee side. I had some friends in blue and they let me join them behind the 'stonewall'. I was only about 30 yards to the right of Pickett's point of attack. It was AMAZING to watch !!! You should know, however, the only thing I 'shot' that day was 35mm Kodak ! BTW, did you go to the ball that Saturday nite ? Estimated 2000 IN the tent and another 3000 milling about outside ! Wild... That week was HUGE for our band.
@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand Hi, YES ! The Old Days 35mm Cameras, I carried one in my haversack all the time and got some great shots , YES ! The Ball, Many bands and food / drinks was excellent ! Myself and 2 other guys were out there on vacation, we were there 1 1/2 weeks before the event, one of the guys had a relative family farm 15 miles ? north of Gettysburg, Being so hot the event was a workout ! The one friend relative had a swimming pool and was great before the event and after the event, we stayed after the event for 4 days, WE had been to the Nashville event in 1994 and then the Chickamauga event in 2000 ? but both were not as much fun ETC as the Gettysburg event in 1998 ( 135th )
Yes, I remember so well. Too bad we never got the last installment. I've made a Marching Songs Playlist for the track. This is one of the songs you guys perform on my list.
Thanks again, James !
And previously unseen images ( for me ) of a cult film. Thank you so much
Greetings From Portland, Oregon! Just watched this movie for the first time yesterday!
Good for you.
Thank you very much for posting the full version of this performance! I was so delighted to see that the scene had been extended in this version of the movie, and am glad that I can now watch it on demand! Fantastic to see the band, and the guy that I know, playing in such a fantastic Civil War movie, and one of the last Civil War epics, I am afraid.
Literally the best rendition of the song. I only wish you guys could’ve sung all the verses
Thanks ! We have sung them all, in lots of other postings. I believe I have one more, in the "Candlelight Concert" series, which we'll be releasing in the future. Please subscribe, so you won't miss any new releases !
@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand I look forward to it!!!
I suppose one of these days some asshole collation will petition this song to be removed from our History. They seem so hell bent of changing and wiping out the history of the U.S. that doesn't fit with their views.
No matter what happens, the South will ALWAYS be the South! THANKS, Lads and May God Bless ALL Yall from your brother just over the line!

@@seamuswbiggerarmalite3379 Actually a more accurate description would be ULSTER \SCOT The very people who settled America along with our European brother's, and my own family fought for the south, you came later and don't forget it sunshine in the settling side of things😉....btw do you support a MARXIST terrorist organisation? For your thumbnail picture suggests you do....
Bravo! 👏 As an S.C.V. Member of the Gilmer Light Guards Camp#89 I congratulate you on your song! As long we live, breath and have hearts as gold as the heaven, we will continue to teach, remember, honor our hero's and veterans of the C.S.A. Our heritage and Southern spirit will never be taken away from us!

Man I love this song one of the best god bless Dixie and god bless the south!
Great to see you again greetings from Yorkshire England, stirring stuff
Love it God Bless the old South
I love South and CSA
You dont say
I can’t believe they made General Hood look so old. He was only in his mid 30s. Lee is also portrayed as much older than he was. He was dark headed with a mustache until 1862. By 1863 he had gone gray with a beard but he was still in his 50s and didn’t look anything like a fragile elderly man. On the contrary, most all reports say Lee was a upright physical specimen of a man incapable of fatigue. But oh well still a great movie 👍. It saddens me to know we will never get another one like this again
Likewise ! But if you're a reader and would like a GREAT Civil War book that's like a movie in your head, you need to treat yourself to this one for Christmas (he's a Mississippian, but...): www.amazon.com/Mississippi-Rebel-Army-Northern-Virginia/dp/0807119814/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3AGMQ49S4WBBP&keywords=a+mississippi+rebel+in+the+army&qid=1637277768&sprefix=A+mississippi+rebel+%2Cstripbooks%2C162&sr=8-1

While I may not like gods & generals, I love the work yall did on this movie. Excellent job!

0:50 when the girl raises her dress the super-religious stonewall jackson looks down and away to avoid temptation.
Yeah. That was a nice detail. Great actor and a real gentleman. Not the least stuck up like many of the others.
I noticed that stunning detail. There were few men ever like Stonewall.
I Love this song. And the movie! Just wish it was the whole song.

@@Bibleen "Rickrolling"... Haven't heard that one before. I think I get the general idea, but what - specifically - does the term mean ?

I should’ve recognized David Kincaid there… I saw his face and thought “hmmm, he looks familiar”
After I saw this video I had to buy the whole movie
Good for you, 'Beau' ! BTW, this clip plays best at 720p. Just sayin'.

Listen to "Hard Road to Richmond", by 2nd SC String Band too.

Ya'll was in gods in generals ? And I learning it now?
Yeah, well... What can I say. Not exactly a hit film, if you know what I mean. Better late than never ?
@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand exactly.
@@aksaraylicelali Welcome aboard !
Hurra Hurra for southern rights Hurra!!!
Great performance, but the one thing that irks me throughout this film is the portrayal of John Bell Hood. The man was in his 30s in 1862 and by the time he took command of the Army of Tennessee in 1864, he was noted for being the YOUNGEST of all the Confederate generals at the army command level.
what happen to the first south Carolina string band?
The last time I was this early commenting in a video, Atlanta hadn’t been burned yet.
LOL...

...seriously ? Please.
@@2ndSouthCarolinaStringBand Ah I was only joking. It was just a funny thought I had. I was actually thnking of buying a Somalian flag and using it as a Bonnie Blue flag. I'm in Ireland and the proper ones wouldn't be easy to get
I hate slavery and the CSA But damn this song slaps
Slavery never left, it just was transferred into the hands of democrats and megacorps.
Wonder who was that young lady singing the song?
You know the the place right under the video ? Where it says "SHOW MORE" ? Read that.

As much as am a civil war enthusiasts I am not a big fan of this movie
I am a hard corps blue belly, but those Southern girls, oh those Southern girls! 💝💖❤️ The way they walk, the way they talk, the way they look at you... (until they find out you are a damn Yankee that is). I am glad the South lost, because if they had won, America would have no Southern girls :(
Hmmm.. I wonder if the war wasn't over who got to keep the Southern girls and that it actually had nothing to do with States Rights?
This is the most propaganda
Angry they are people and not cartoon villains?
CSA lives on through us, only we can bring back the peace in Dixie
