Thanks for sharing your personal memories I was 8 yrs old at this time...though in NY. It was a dream growing up then. I dont recognize the country anymore. I wish you and your family all the best.
Looking back at the old san Francisco was amazing and those glory days are gone for good now. I love the old san Francisco culture where everyone was happy and less crimes.
@@recoswell I was there too. I was a hippy and we mainly hung out in North Beach and the Haight. (Some in the Mission) I don't know if I'd call it the 'good ole days' but it was a 1,000 better than these times. (The rock & roll, sex and drugs were amazing!)
I am english and San Francisco always makes me think of the Steve Mcqueen movie Bullitt, Janis Joplin and the hippies and the tv shows Ironside and The Streets Of San Francisco. All long gone now. But this was a beautiful video of precious memories to you, thank you for uploading it.
This brought tears to my eyes......... I used to play on that train and at the golden gate park they used to have a big ship......and PlayLand at the beach!
I as born in SF and graduated from high school (Riordan) in 1969. I immediately recognized the train and cable car and Petrinis’s Plaza. I lived near West Portal, and as someone else commented, it is so crowded now. It as a time when my Mom would just tell us to get out of the house and be back before dark. Thanks for sharing. I’ll send the link to my (now grown) kids.
San Francisco is my hometown too and I miss it! My parents were living in a tiny house on Clearfield Drive when I was born, also in the Sunset district! Thank you for posting this.
I grew up in the bay area in the 50's and 60's. Born in Berkeley, raised in San Jose and Santa Clara. We went to San Francisco at least once a month. FISHERMAN'S WHARF, THE EMPORIUM, MARKET STREET, THE PLAYLAND, THE ZOO, THE JAPANESE GARDENS, THE CLIFF HOUSE. So many fond memories. I even studied music and voice in San Francisco. Bill Stoker was my vocal coach(Jonny Mathis's vocal coach). So many of those places are now gone, like the people connected to those memories. I sure love San Francisco ! I always will........💙
Wow,and now I am thinking about the good old days... we moved to San Francisco in the late '60s, from Michigan after the long hot summer of 1967.. beautiful city strange people, and some good people as well of course, and a beautiful place to explore and enjoy.. went to Everett Junior High School, Burbank Junior High School, Woodrow Wilson High School, and then we moved again, to Vallejo California.. those were the days! We used to love the Playland by the beach, and Golden Gate Park was clean and safe at that time.. parking was never a problem in the city, and rent was very reasonable.. my first apartment two bedrooms on second floor of an apartment building, and I paid $350 per month in the'70s.. those were the days
'77 found a one bedroom at 22nd and Clement, near the little movie theater and across from Yet Wah. $175 a month. I said it's nice but a little pricey for me so the sweet old Russian landlady threw in the garage space for no extra charge. Could you even find a garage for that now let alone an apartment? Walked a block up to California and got the 1X which got me to Montgomery in 20 minutes or so.
the federal minimum wage was raised to in 1969 $ 1.60 an hour, and remained at that rate until 1974. that works out to a bit over $177 a month before taxes. $350. a month was not cheap for those accomodations.
@@suppylarue220 He said 70s not 69 but even at 69 level one dollar is 8 today by Google. That makes 350 about 2800 today. Try finding a two bedroom in a decent neighborhood for anything like that today. Besides minimum wage was for teenagers who were not looking to rent 2 bedrooms all by themselves. My one-bedroom was 175 in 77. That's maybe 900 today which was affordable for middle class single then and wouldn't get you a room in a crack house (if those still exist) today let alone a one bedroom in the Richmond District with a garage space. There were cheaper places available for truly low income people. But let's not quibble, Happy New Year.
What a lovely old family film! I am a San Francisco native, born in 1950, who lived in the Sunset and North Beach neighborhoods mostly. Lowell class of Spring '68. That said, the sixties and early seventies were very tumultuous times, not all peaceful as some seem to think. The Viet Nam War, Civil Rights movement, and what was generally percieved then as a huge crime wave (due in part to the sheer number of male boomers coming of age) were but a few issues back then. Still, it was a wonderful time to be young in San Francisco.
Very sweet footage. Thank you for sharing. I couldn't help but think about what was going on only 1/2 mile or so away at that time in the Haight Ashbury. I was born at Kaiser Hospital in '68 after my parents moved from the Panhandle to northern Marin. My dad was still working in the City, commuting, and couldn't resist all the excitement going on in the Haight. He soon "tuned in, turned on, and dropped out." quitting his job and leaving my mom and me a bit stranded in the then boonies of Novato. I spent my childhood going back and forth between parents and between two very different worlds. Yours was the kind of neighborhood I used to drive by and wish I lived in--a sort of happy medium. Lucky you for having lived what looks to have been such a sweet childhood. Thanks again for sharing this wonderful footage.
Thank you for your kind comment, Capt Larry! My mom told me not to complain about people and always smile even when there are setbacks in life. It is still my guiding principle after she past away a long time ago...
My hometown was in Sacramento, I was 14 in 1969, we also lived in the south bay Sunnyvale, Newark, we would visit San Francisco, watch the planes take off, thank you for posting a simpler time…..
I enjoyed watching your video of such a beautiful city. Yes sadly your family has passed now, as has mine. I was only 19 the first time I ever went to San Francisco Aug 8, 1969. I was new in the Air Force and was travelling from the East Coast to Japan, by way of Travis AFB in Fairfield, CA . I planned the trip so I would have 2 days in San Francisco before travelling to Travis AFB, for my flight to Yokota AB, Japan. I stayed in a rather dingy hotel by the bus station and was terrified, Thankfully people were very nice to me. I think they thought I was younger than 19 as I looked 15 lol. One person gave me a ticket to a ballgame, and other people showed me where the sights of the city were. One even offered to drive me all the way to Travis, but I said, I already had a bus ticket for that trip. It was such a beautiful city back then. The hills and viewpoints, the Bridges and all the shops and restaurants. Though different than where I grew up in Boston, it reminded me a little of Boston. A compact city on the water with people from all over the world. It must have been exciting growing up there. I have always had very fond memories of my 2 days in San Francisco in 1969. Yes Thank you for Sharing this wonderful part of your life.
I drive by that place every day. There is a scene that shows the car going by a road sign that says Gilroy 9, sj 40, sf 84 … that is near the junction of Betabel Road and Y Rd., if I was to guess, they were probably coming home from Monterey
Watching videos like this is so nostalgic in a sense. It’s like even though this isn’t my generation or era. These times were so different compared to now. Where people were just enjoying life without cell phones and all the technology of now. It’s almost peaceful to watch.
Wonderful memories, I grew up in Redwood City during that time, I remember our school field trips were to the museums at Golden Gate Park. Unfortunately, that entire area has greatly deteriorated.
Very sweet. Growing up in the Sunset was a blessing. We bought my grandfather's house ( both Dad and G'pa were SFFD) which was only 6 months old when he bought it from Festus of the Addams Family. (35th between Lincoln and Irving.) My Sweetheart lived on 41st between Lawton and Moraga. It's just not the same, although our home looks lovely still. Not all of them fared well. It seems that below the Blvd, many of the houses are not maintained well. Sad.

Ohh my goodness, thank you so much for loading this ! I spent K - 8th grade in SF which was 1968 - 1976 , we lived the entire time at 1292 La Playa st. We shopped every week at Petrinis which I have not seen since - until I stumbled across this vid. We shopped usually on Sundays, I remember going in the door the meat counter to to the right side of the store. I am willing to bet I was within 10 feet of you once or twice if you shopped on Sundays. I went to Kittredge school during that time over off 25th avenue, rode the Muni by self from 2nd grade on. The scenes of your street and how automobile free are amazing. Google that same street today and it is choked with autos because of the housing costs and all the extra people that have to live there. I remember getting a hot dog a few times at that little walk up stand in the vid as well. Thank you again... :-)
Thanks for taking the time to comment on my video! Definitely, we shared the same time in the same town. Such a miracle! I miss the old days of San Francisco, too. I visited SF 3 years ago and was surprised to see the changes...
Wow so you lived on the 1200 block of LaPlaya. I grew up in the inner Sunset district and pretty much the outer sunset district my entire time living in San Francisco. Mid 1950's to 2001. Gosh you lived pretty close to Playland at the Beach. My dad lived on 48th and Fulton street and you could see Playland and some of the amusement rides and their lights from his back window. And I also remember Petrini's plaza on Masonic. Haven't seen it until this video. What a wonderful time it was growing in the City by the Bay back then. It's funny I'm looking at your username "MetalTeamster" in San Francisco I was in the Teamsters union for over 14 years driving a beer truck in the city. I just got my pension from the Teamsters union (took almost 7 months to get it 😱) Cheers 👍
I grew up in the Mission around the same time. In 1967 for the 4th-6th grade I was bussed to Robert Louis Stevenson school in the Sunset. Thanks for such beautiful memories.
Yes what a wonderful tribute to your family, your neighborhood, and your City By the Bay. A Ulloa grad (1961 I think) thanks for all the neighborhood memories. Boy those homes were pristine. BTW your mom was quite beautiful.
@@hideki.yamane Pretty unfortunate to hear about the death of your Mother. If your father is still alive, at least he is still with you. If he is not, Rest in Peace to him also.
Looks like a time of wonder and infinite possibilities. I live in UK so looking at the sunshine, clean streets and happy people makes me yearn to have lived in SF during that period, truly a paradise lost. Thank you for sharing the video, it will live forever now.
My dad was a longshorman in Stockton for 36 years but often him and groups of his colleagues were sent to SF, Willmington, Long Beach and other places to work. On his days off he would pack all his kids into the car and we would day-trip to SF and see the sights and the SF Port and ship loading docks. It was in the late 60's as in this video. Those days with dad were pure gold. Driving around, munching on hotdogs, cheese sandwiches, cucumbers with salt, watermelon 🍉. I remember that beautiful SF cool weather and incredible sunshine. Dad would do a double over the GG bridge just so we could see the pacific ocean below and large patches of fog. I think we had a green vw wagon. It was all so glorious. Simple pleasures. Miss you, dad....
Thanks for sharing your memory with your dad. This home video brings me tears and memories I had with my long-gone dad, mom, and grandma whenever I watch it.
This is so sad, it is like that Dali's melting clock painting. We just watch our time melt away and fade away. I lived on Riveria/42nd ave from 2007 to 2020. My child grew up in the hood and Ulloa Sunset Playground was our go-to playground. Unfortunately, Lowell high was not a desirable high school for my child. We moved out to Nevada for that famous gifted talent kid school. He went on to Stanford. It is so hard for me to move out of San Francisco. I was a chinatown kid then moved to Mission district, then Holloway by SFSU, then Sunset, for a total of 37 years!!!!
My favorite SF family video, it brought tears to my eyes. I recognize Ulloa School I attended tiny tots there and then to Parkside School and St. Gabriel.
Fantastic film! I'm from So Cal and I remember that train engine in Golden Gate Park. I was there at about the same time as the kid in this film, and at about he same age. The footage of the woman shopping in the Kimono is priceless. Thank you!
Oh to freeze time back then. People weren't staring into a cellphone. It was a rolling car show and we didn't even know it. People seemed happy with the little things in life.
Man....I lived at 2108 golden gate avenue at this time.....went to st. Cyprans Church and Anza elementary school this is going to be fun to watch THANKS!!!!! This is beautiful and very very nostalgic...I feel like i am here again WOW! You really look like your Mom.
Beautiful video. Every time you look at it your mom, dad and grandma are right there with you again. These long ago times must hold a lot of very happy memories for you.
What a beautiful video. I grew up in the inner Sunset district in the mid 50's. Lived pretty much my entire life in the Sunset district before moving to Miami FL in 2001. San Francisco was such a beautiful city back in the day. It will always remain close to my heart. You have a wonderful family, and I recognize many of those places in your video. Thank you so much for sharing your life with us. It truly was a different generation back then!!! 👍
@@writer46m72 My mother who unfortunately passed away in 1998 had some homemade movies of Playland at the Beach and also some videos of our trip down to Santa Cruz in 1959, but we have still yet to find them.
Very cool. Thanks for posting. I'm in my 40's and as someone who hasn't been born around that time yet, I always like to watch movies from that era to see how everyone dressed, the kind of cars they drove, and the type of houses build. But I love watching homemade videos even better because it's obviously more authentic.
Thank you so much for sharing this video, it is absolutely beautiful and really did bring a tear to my eye. This is the San Francisco that I once knew and loved, and you managed to bring back great memories.
Great home movies -- loved seeing some of my remembered places -- like Petrini Plaza off Masonic which had the best fresh fish and seafood in the outer districts, some of the beautiful Sunset/Lakeside area homes (on sunny days!) and Ulloa School. Looks like your family enjoyed times in Southern Marin as well.Thank you for sharing this beautiful, personal film. I wonder if you went on to High School in the city -- Lowell perhaps?
Thank you for taking the time to comment on my video. My dad loved to take us to the suburbs on weekends in his Buick car. I went just Ulloa kindergarten and moved to Tokyo, Japan when I was 5. Ever since I moved between the two countries.
This is a wonderful film. I was five years of age and remember going to Steinhardt aquarium regularly. I loved the city and still do. Thank you for a great little window into history.
When kids could ride around on their bikes and trikes and have Halloween costumes at school. I first visited as a kid about 65 when dad let me, mom and my brother tag along on a business trip. Stayed at the Sir Francis Drake (Beefeater doorman and the Starlight Room) and decided I was going to live there when I grew up. I didn't become an astronaut or a rock and roll star but I did move to America's most beautiful city after college in late 70s. Your Mom was a beauty and we can see the love in your family.

@@hideki.yamane you are more than welcome. Lots of changes. Change is constant and waits for no one.. 🙂
I went to petrinis it was a block away on fulton/masonic and went to anza.....remember Munck=hies hamburgers 12 cents each??
Beautiful, thank you so much for sharing this wonderful film, I love the music and how you put all the clips together, may hugs to you!!!
Yes what a wonderful tribute to your family, your neighborhood, and your City By the Bay. A Ulloa grad (1961 I think) thanks for all the neighborhood memories. Boy those homes were pristine. BTW your mom was quite beautiful.
Thanks for the compliments! My mom will be smiling in heaven. Thanks and e-hug!
@@hideki.yamane Pretty unfortunate to hear about the death of your Mother. If your father is still alive, at least he is still with you.
If he is not, Rest in Peace to him also.
Thank you. My dad also passed away long time ago. I thank him for leaving this treasure film.@@matthew-emerson-cadmer-7409
ahhh, petrini plaza as it used to be. thanks for the memories!
Thanks 8francesco!
You brought back lots of memories for me. Our family lived on 45th Ave. and Judah St. in the Sunset. Very nice video.
Thanks. Very close to where I lived!
Man, this was so amazing. Just beautiful. That was such a great era.
Thank you :)
Wow, just fabulous. A portrait of a happy family fifty years ago.
Wow!! Well done!! I, too, went to Ulloa School for kindergarten I believe in 1969-70. Good times.
Thanks Al. You were exactly the same age as me then. Yes, Good old times... I am becoming mid 50s this year...time flies.
I was born in 69. Amazing vídeo!!
From Brazil!!
It is amazing how much this video for 1969 reminds me of my own childhood 58 or 1959 era.
Beautiful family, wonderful times .
Thank you very much.
Thanks Peter!
Looks like a time of wonder and infinite possibilities. I live in UK so looking at the sunshine, clean streets and happy people makes me yearn to have lived in SF during that period, truly a paradise lost. Thank you for sharing the video, it will live forever now.
Awesome video! Very beautiful! Thanks for sharing! My parents still lives in the Sunset district
Wonderful film, it made me nostalgic for your family I was stationed there between 64 and 67 that's the San Francisco I knew
It was great
My dad was a longshorman in Stockton for 36 years but often him and groups of his colleagues were sent to SF, Willmington, Long Beach and other places to work.
Thanks for sharing your memories. It was a great time in a wonderful city. When I was a kid in Marin it was a big deal to go to "the city".
Awesome! We had all ethnic backgrounds of people in the Sunset district. I don't know now. Thanks for taking the time to comment on my video!
Thank you!
Thank you! I grew up in the West Portal area, same era. Brought back such lovely memories of our town. Thanks!
Thanks Monica!
Originally from the city, what a wonderful video, thank you for sharing!
A lovely home movie. So many of my childhood memories imbedded in these moments. Thank you!
Wonderful! I was about the same age then, grew up on 12th & Fulton right across the street from the park. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Michael. It looks like it. We spent the greatest time of the city.
realy enjoyable...I was 4 years old at that time
Thank you!
What stood out the most was how happy your mother looked.
And then I couldn't help it - I laughed when your bicycle fell over. Don't hurt me! 😁
Thanks. My mom will be smiling in heaven now. I am still clumsy cyclist lol
@@hideki.yamane My mother as well. Probably why I noticed. Thank you for sharing.
A wonderful trip down memory lane. Brought back a lot of memories from my childhood. Very nicely made and music was nice, too.
Incredible memories and footage - thank you.
Hideki, Another world, another era. There is so much nostalgia in this film.
Thank you, Tony. Whenever I watch this video, reminds me of time you, my dad and I went Arima-san's jazz concert in Asakusa...
That brought back so many great memories 😊
Beautiful video. Every time you look at it your mom, dad and grandma are right there with you again. These long ago times must hold a lot of very happy memories for you.
What a beautiful video. I grew up in the inner Sunset district in the mid 50's. Lived pretty much my entire life in the Sunset district before moving to Miami FL in 2001. San Francisco was such a beautiful city back in the day. It will always remain close to my heart. You have a wonderful family, and I recognize many of those places in your video. Thank you so much for sharing your life with us. It truly was a different generation back then!!! 👍
Would you have, by chance, or by luck, any homemade videos to share that was filmed through the 1950's?🙂
@@writer46m72 My mother who unfortunately passed away in 1998 had some homemade movies of Playland at the Beach and also some videos of our trip down to Santa Cruz in 1959, but we have still yet to find them.
Had me in tears, so beautiful
💕... Allie and family love San Francisco CA is like Lima Peru...
How fun to watch and what happy times! I love to see the old fashions and cars, too. Such a beautiful family.
Yes! I remember petrini Plaza, I think it was on Grove and Masonic... those were the days
Great stuff. Just beautiful.
Subscribed.
Thank you 😊
Very, very nice. I loved that. Thank you for posting.
jgrantsf, thanks! Thanks for watching.
I wonder what homes were going for back in 1969 in San Francisco. Nice vid thumbs up
This is a wonderful film. I was five years of age and remember going to Steinhardt aquarium regularly. I loved the city and still do. Thank you for a great little window into history.
Thank you for your comment.
Thank you very much for taking the time to comment on my video, Mike! Yes, my mom was a very kind person...
Wow! Is right!! I was 3 years old, I remember the train at the zoo.. etc. what a great treasure you have in this video.
Sweet video. Different time and place....Lived there 35 years.
Thank Mick! We share the same affection for the city by the bay.
