Thank you! This video was more informative than any Larson video! May I add that this door is identical to the higher-model Platinum except for these FAVORABLE differences: 1) the lever to hold the door open is on the bottom, not the top - so you can do it with your foot; plus, it will stay open in a few different positions (not just one) 2) you do not have to lift the door handle to lock it, as you do with the Platinum, and 3) the bottom-panel window replacements are available, should one break. Unfortunately, they are unavailable at this time with Platinum, and you’d have to re-buy the whole door. The ‘plus’ feature with Platinum is that it comes pre-assembled. Be aware that, unlike the Tradewinds, the Platinum version is installed on the surface of the brick mould and protrudes out instead of being recessed in. Some may not like that look. That said, they are both great models. We have a Savannah on our back porch and we love it! In my humble opinion, Larson doors do not disappoint.
Wow! Thank you for the great response! You're absolutely right on all accounts. Great observations about the Platinum vs. standard Tradewinds as well! I'll also add, since the Platinum is surface mounted, when the door sags (which all doors do over time) you cannot straighten it out. The door will have to be replaced. Also, the rubber door sweep weather stripping at the bottom of the Platinum model doors is physically attached to the door. When it wears out, you can't replace it, door must be replaced. Finally, the Platinum doors LOOK secure because of the big beefy 3-point locking mechanism. But it's a myth. Anyone with a square bit can open the screw covers, back out the square head screws, and just remove the entire Platinum door and frame to get access to your house. It takes less than 60-seconds. If anyone reads this and wants the Platinum door, I suggest buying 4-security screws and install them instead of the manufacturer screws at the top and bottom of both the latch and hinge rail sides of the frame. That way no one can just remove the door and beat your security.
I have only installed a couple of storm doors but the door sweep on the bottom of the door when you cut the rubber leave it at least a 1/4" longer than required. That allows the rubber to contract a little. If you cut it to fit as soon as you install it it will shrink and you will have a gap. Just something to be aware of.
The new glass retention latch has some issues. If the door begins to slam or close to quick or if the tensioner for the screen is weak, the latch can actually fail and allow the screen and glass insert to drop. The door is fantastic out side of that small change. Larson has been providing the older spring loaded latch as a warranty resolution. Ive had 5 or 6 of these doors do that to me in the last month or so.
Good point! I forgot to mention that. I too dont like the new latch thats moves left to right. Not enough surface area on the latch mechanism to hold the glass up properly.
Do you know the difference between the Larson’s Tradewind door you’re evaluating in this video vs. the Larson Lakeview door? They appear identical, but the latter only seems to be sold by Menards (for less money). There is also minimal info on the Lakeview found other than that published by Menards. Thanks!
Hi! I have this door but the closer is on the bottom. There is nothing connected at the top. I have a crooked gap at the bottom on the side that has the handle. It’s an inch wide or so and only at that area. Will the screw at the bottom trick work for this? Also, I wanted to install a wind chain but I’m afraid of ruining the screen. Have you been able to install one on this door?
The problem with all these retractable screen doors compared to the traditional replace the glass with the screen in summer is: You get only 1/2 the screen area, so you get much less air movement. You also have the glass doubled at the bottom, with all the natural dust/debris on what is now 4 sides of glass, it's a grimy view through the bottom half of the door. Nope, just get the full screen swap out version and keep it both simple and full opening.
@@TA-ch7ok maybe for you. This is more to protect a mahogany 36x96 door I have that is rarely used for airflow. If I want it, the half screen is great… and swapping out full glass on a 36x96 door is cumbersome and a pain to store. Just because full screen works for you doesn’t mean a half screen can’t work for someone else
I have a door very similar to this and I was wondering if there was anyway to get that access plate at the top off. I have the screws out but I’m still not having any luck removing it to replace the screen. Thanks in advance!
Yeah, that top plate tends to be really stuck on there. If you remove those two screws, that's all that's holding it on if it's this door. If you have a bracket that holds the door closed right on that panel too you'll have to remove those screws, but that's not typical. I would try rocking it back-and-forth to loosen it or take a rubber mallet and tap on it. Sometimes it just takes strength to get it to pop off.
Great question. Never been asked that before. I would recommend geat some great stuff expanding foam or similar. You could squeeze it in there and that should seal out things from getting in.
Hey-I have this exact door. After not even a year I came home to find that the glass that connects to the screen had completely separated from each other leaving the glass at the bottom and the screen itself fully retracted up. Have you experienced this with this door before? I’ve contacted Larson and they could not fully explain what happened however they are sending me replacement parts.
Yes, ive seen it happen. Usually its a defective screen. I call it a guilotine model brcause when the screen rips, the glass shoots down with a loud crash and the screen shoots up with a bang.
@@stormdoorguy haha i gotcha. Funny thing is-in this case, the screen is fully intact but just retracted all the way up. No rips or tears. Hopefully the replacement parts go in easy!!
No, the upper glas panel stays in the door and slides up and down with the screen attatched. The only time you remove the upper glass is in the event you have to change out a broken screen.
I have similar door and glass on sliding window got broken. Can't figure out how to remove this window. I need at least to remove all the stuck glass there.. can you give a tip?

If you're talking about having the door handles on the opposite side as the entry door, then the reason would be if there was a wall or railing next to the entry door. Then you'd want to swing it oposite so the storm door opens towards the wall or railing so you don't have to walk around the storm door to get in and out of your house. You don't want the storm door to be in the way of the flow of traffic.
On the inside of the door, at the top of the bottom window frame, on the left and right sides are 2 screws that hold to plast shims into place in the corners. Remove those screws and the shims, wigle the glass left and right and it will come out.
