  • Watch the steeple cab locomotive pass by with a load of dirt and some scrap ties on a flat car. The dirt will be used for a new project planned for 2020. Stay tuned!

I haven't seen this channel in years! A most adorable steeplecab, a very creative miniature line!
What sort of substation supplies power to this line? And what's the voltage?

It is 240V AC, line to ground. Common house power, just fed from a single ended transformer. More videos to come!

@@CNW4145 Ah, suppose that makes sense, since you're running much lighter stock than a full sized 600v DC line. Are the controllers the resistor bank-style ones too?
It's a very impressive interurban you folks have built!

Only 2 of the streetcars still have resistor banks. The rest I have converted to IGBT based power controls. I still use the same trolley throttle controllers with 6 or 7 points, but the throttle is interfaced to a notch decoder circuit which then translates it to an adjustable duty cycle value to control the speed of the motor. Much more efficient that using resistors, and a whole lot less space consumed!

@@CNW4145 A really great compromise, classical style movement but with more efficient electronics.
A neat idea I've recently had is making some kind of simple electric, rail mounted shovel - Where do you typically source these motors?

I used to get them from a local golf cart reseller but the guy passed away, so now I source them from electric carts I find in junkyards or on Ebay. If you search for a GE 5BC motor you will come up with quite a few choices. I use 24-36V motors of at least 2 HP and a shaft style I can use. $200-$300 is a decent price for them.

Wow! I was excited the moment that RUclips notified me a new video had come up, it's fantastic seeing 119 being put to good use hauling freight on the RRVT!!! It would appear that the hopper is a newer car, built from one of those ex-brickworks flatcars? Looking forwards to more news as things develop on the RRVT!!

The hopper car was built in 2016, it is made from a 500 gallon fuel tank. The other half of the tank is getting built into another hopper car this year, I am working on building trucks for it right now. The new hopper will have center and end dump capability, whereas the one in the video dumps to the outside of the track only. It was constructed primarily for rip-rap.
